In a family’s vegetable garden, there was a big rock that people often tripped over (绊倒) and got hurt. One day, the son asked, “Dad, why don’t we dig out that annoying stone?” The father replied, “That rock has been there since your grandfather’s time. It’s huge, and I have no idea how long it would take to dig it out. Instead of wasting time trying to remove (移开) it, it’s better to just be careful around it and let it teach you to think smarter.”
Years later, the boy grew up, got married and became a father himself. One day, his daughter complained (抱怨), “Dad, I really hate that big rock in the vegetable garden. Let’s move it someday.” The father said, “No way! That rock is really heavy. If it could be moved, it would have been gone when I was a kid.”
The daughter was upset because she had tripped over it many times. So she decided to solve the problem. One morning, she got up early and went into the garden with a hoe (锄头) in her hand. First, she poured water around the rock to soften the soil and waited for 10 minutes. Then, she used the hoe to dig the soil. She thought it would take all day to dig it out, but to her surprise, it only took a few minutes. The rock wasn’t as big as they had thought. They had all been fooled by how big it seemed.
This shows that the things we think are holding us back are often made bigger by our own worries. Sometimes, it is the “stubborn stones (顽石)” in our minds that stop us from discovering new solutions and chances.

Have you ever felt sick or had a headache while riding in a car? That’s carsickness, a common problem. It happens because your brain is in such a situation: you’re sitting still, but your inner ear sends movement (移动) signals (信号) to the brain.
When carsickness hits, what do you usually do? Some people take medicine, while others try sitting at the front of the car to look ahead or keep the window open for fresh air. Those methods can work, but Chinese scientists have found a new, easier solution — listening to music! They studied how to help people feel better from carsickness and discovered that different kinds of music have different effects on reducing it.
The study results were quite interesting. Joyful music worked the best, reducing carsickness by 57.3%. Soft music was almost as good, cutting down carsickness by 56.7%. Passionate music helped a little, with a 48.3% reduction. However, sad music didn’t help at all. In fact, it was even worse than doing nothing. The control group just had a rest to reduce carsickness. They reported a reduction in carsickness of 43.3% after their rest, while those who listened to sad music reported a reduction of just 40%.
Researchers think that soft music helps you relax, while joyful music keeps your mind busy and help you feel good. But sad music could have the opposite effect. It might make you feel worse by bringing up negative (悲观的) feelings.
So, next time you start to feel carsick during a car ride, listen to some joyful or soft music! It could make your trip more enjoyable and help you feel better.

Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human? Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Since August, driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
Why do we develop self-driving cars? Self-driving cars have many advantages. They use computers with many cameras which can sense all the objects close to the car and give the computers another route (路线). Then the car can take people to the place where they want to go. For disabled or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily.
According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 1.35 million people are killed on roads around the world. It’s reported that self-driving cars could reduce road accidents by 90 percent. The main cause of car accidents is human error (错误). By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose attention like humans do.
But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react as fast as a human driver can. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars wouldn’t see the lines on the road easily. It might lead to an accident. The car’s computer system would be broken by someone, causing it to crash (碰撞) or change its direction.
It’s clear that there is a lot of work to do to make self-driving cars common and safe on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen.

In Xuancheng, Anhui Province, there lives a special yellow dog. People call him “Huang Zhanzhang”, meaning “Station Master Huang”. Why is he called that? Because he often stays at the taxi stand like a station master. His yellow color makes the name easy to remember.
Every morning, Huang Zhanzhang begins his “duty”. He walks around the station, watches the taxis and greets drivers with a happy wagging (来回摇摆) tail. The taxi drivers have a close relationship with him. They share their breakfast with him. In return, he stays near their cars and makes them laugh. The drivers say he is their little “angel” (天使).
