A
The global population is aging as life expectancy rises and the fertility rate declines. A primary concern over an aging population is how it affects the working-age population ratio (比例), the portion of the population in the 15-64 age range. In developed economies, the working-age population ratio reached a plateau of around 67% from 1985 to the early 2000s but has since dropped to 63% and is projected to fall to 57% by 2075.
How much longer do people need to work to offset (抵消) the effects of population aging? For developed economies, offsetting the peak-to-trough decline in the working-age population ratio would require a 15% increase in the average effective working life between 2000 and 2075.
The good news is that this transition is already well underway. The researchers find that since 2000, average working lives of developed markets have already increased by about 12%. The result is that, despite longer life expectancy and declining working-age population ratios, the average share of life spent actively participating in the labor market has actually risen, from about 44% to about 47%.
Several factors have contributed to this increase, including a shift away from manual jobs — where early retirement is more common — and rising female participation in the workforce after childbirth.
“While raising official retirement ages can help address the financial challenges of government pensions in an era of growing life expectancy, it doesn’t seem to be an essential requirement for people to extend their working lives,” said Kevin Daly at Goldman Sachs Research.
21. What is the main concern mentioned in the text?
A. The increase in population. B. The early retirement of workers.
C. The influence of population aging. D. The downturn in developed economies.
22. What was the duration of working life in 2022?
A. About 36 years. B. About 37 years. C. About 38 years. D. About 39 years.
23. Why do the governments raise the official retirement ages?
A. To increase the income of the elderly. B. To deal with the financial challenges.
C. To eliminate the concerns about aging. D. To improve seniors’ sense of achievement.

Long before Rafael Contreras opened the Beau Ideal interior-design showroom in Westfield, he hosted pop-up sales out of a re-imagined Pepperidge Farm bakery truck.
Contreras, who lives in Metuchen, also spent a short time as a soap and candle sales representative, cruising the Tri-State Area and picking up vintage (复古的) finds along the way. Several years later, he began searching for a traditional storage area for all the treasures he had collected. Soon, his artful vision caught the attention of interior designers, and the search for a space began. It took two years to discover the perfect showroom, just two blocks from Westfield’s downtown. With natural light and white walls, the space offered a blank canvas ready for Contreras to add his distinctive style.
Contreras chose the name “Beau Ideal”, which is from the French expression for “the ideal beauty”, to inspire people to bring style and personality into living spaces through vintage and antique items that are as functional as they are appealing. “My shop exhibits storied vintage finds, crafted with intention, quality and design in mind,” Contreras says.
When sourcing irresistibly stylish objects, Contreras is always on the lookout for items that turn heads. “There’s no place I won’t go to acquire rare finds, and I love bringing them home to be cleaned, polished and, sometimes, renovated,” he says.
Walking into the shop, people will find everything from 1960s abstract expressionist artwork to a 1970s Italian Murano chandelier (吊灯) to furniture that echoes Hollywood’s Golden Age. “I especially look for standout pieces with sculptural details and clean lines,” he says. “They’re like jewelry for your space. I believe that a home should reveal emotion and reflect the owner’s personality.”
Contreras, whose family moved from Colombia to Sayreville when he was a child, once dreamed of becoming a doctor. But over time, that path gave way to a different calling. “My business and my collecting are my deepest passions now,” he says.
24. What did Contreras gain from his past job?
A. Artistic taste. B. Financial awareness.
C. Interest in designing. D. New sales techniques.
25. Why did Contreras name his showroom “Beau Ideal”?
A. To appreciate French art. B. To appeal for more donations.
C. To share his vision of beauty. D. To highlight the functions of the exhibits.
26. What will people experience in the shop?
A. A sense of purpose. B. The richness of history.
C. A warm family atmosphere. D. An outlook on modern life.
27. What does Contreras’s story indicate?
A. Art is the science of living. B. Never think you are above your work.
C. Passion is the driving force behind success. D. Childhood dreams often lead to future careers.

If you’re a parent or guardian, you must have heard about the importance of respecting your child’s feelings. Teaching our kids this can help them work through the negative emotions they experience as they grow up.
But what about your feelings as a parent? Hilary Jacobs Hendel, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, and Dr Juli Fraga, a psychologist and parenting educator, flip the script in their new book, Parents Have Feelings, Too. Together, they teach parents how to face and move through their own emotions so they can raise emotionally healthy children.
“Emotions affect us every day and often get us into trouble, and they have huge repercussions for how we understand emotions of future generations,” Hendel said.
A lot of people have never considered their feelings, and they don’t even acknowledge they have emotions, believing that emotions are under their conscious control, if they are tough enough. But we have emotions to help us survive. They are rapid-action programs for movement. Think about it: If a lion were to burst into the room where you are right now, you’d run before your thinking brain could say, “Oh, here comes a lion. Run!” The purpose of an emotion is to make us move in adaptive ways.
As a parent, understanding how to navigate your emotions can change the whole direction of an interaction with your child. It can open your heart to a greater connection with them because you better understand how emotions work in their body. Understanding your child’s emotional state better also helps you be less triggered (触发) by the defense they might use, like rolling their eyes or being rude.
You need to keep establishing these open doors for connection and secure attachment so your kids will come talk to you as a parent and know you are a safe haven. We have to understand how to avoid unintentionally shaming our kids and causing anxiety. The ability to work through our emotions is one of the best things we can do for our kids. Think of it as the bread and butter of wellness. When we can navigate our own emotions, we raise kids who can do the same.
28. In what aspect do Hendel and Fraga instruct parents in their new book?
A. Tips on reading psychological books. B. Strategies to raise intelligent children.
C. Methods of handling children’s emotions. D. Approaches to managing parents’ own emotions.
29. What does the underlined word “repercussions” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Emotional values. B. Immediate responses.
C. Social benefits. D. Lasting consequences.
30. How does the author prove our unconscious emotions?
A. By giving an example. B. By defining a concept.
C. By providing statistics. D. By making a comparison.
31. What is implied in the text?
A. Emotions promote kids’ growth. B. Bread and butter ensures happiness.
C. Parents model emotional regulation. D. Kids shouldn’t hide feelings from parents.

The fur and scales of the animal kingdom are far from boring and full of wild colors and patterns. But how do animals get their spots, stripes (条纹), and everything in between?
In 1952, British mathematician Alan Turing proposed that as tissue develops, it generates chemical substances that move about, similar to how white milk spreads when it is poured into black coffee. In Turing’s theory, chemicals interact with pigment (色素) cells to form spots and the blank spaces in between them. However, computer simulations based on Turing’s idea created spots that were less distinct than those found in nature.
In 2023, University of Colorado Boulder chemical engineer Ankur Gupta and his collaborators improved upon Turing’s theory by adding another mechanism called diffusiophoresis. This is a process where diffusing (扩散) particles pull other particles along with them.
Gupta turned to the purple-and-black hexagon (六边形) pattern seen on a boxfish, a bright species found off the coast of Australia, as a test. He found that diffusiophoresis could generate patterns with sharper outlines than Turing’s original model, but these results were just too perfect. All of the hexagons were the same size and shape. In nature, no pattern is perfect. For example, a zebra’s black stripes vary in thickness. So Gupta’s team sought out to refine their theory.
In a new study, Gupta’s team detailed how they were able to recreate the imperfect patterns and texture. After giving individual cells defined sizes and then modelling how each one moved through tissue, the simulations began to make less uniform patterns. It’s similar to how balls of different sizes would move through a tube. The larger ones like a basketball or bowling ball would create thicker outlines than golf balls or ping-pong balls. It’s the same with cells — when bigger cells gather, they make broader patterns. If the same balls traveling in a tube bump into one another and block it, a continuous line of flow will break up. When cells experience that same traffic jam, the result is the breaks in the stripes.
Understanding how pattern-making cells assemble could help engineers develop materials that can change colors based on their environment. It may also help create more effective approaches to delivering medicine to a specific part of the body.
32. How were the computer simulations based on Turing’s idea?
A. They failed to present sharp and clear spots. B. They could create distinct natural spots.
C. They hardly formed hexagonal patterns. D. They could generate perfect patterns.
33. Why did Gupta’s team decide to improve their theory?
A. To generate more hexagons. B. To recreate imperfect patterns.
C. To remove the breaks in between the stripes. D. To assist engineers to develop new materials.
34. What is a potential use of the findings of Gupta’s team?
A. To recognize animals. B. To help cure diseases.
C. To design original patterns. D. To deal with traffic jams.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Whose theory on animals is better? B. How do animals change their colors?
C. Why do animals have spots and stripes? D. What is imperfect about animals’ spots and stripes?

Why Do We Love Fall So Much?
The autumn equinox (秋分) marks the first official day of fall. Some parts of the country are welcoming the most striking symbols of the season: colorful leaves, sweater weather, and pumpkin spice in everything.
Fall stimulates our senses. Every season has its own positive associations, but fall happens to be an especially rich sensory experience — think golden sunlight hitting the maple leaves, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, or even the scents of damp soil in the air. “____36____ They make us feel cozy, calm, and nostalgic (怀旧的),” says Dr Albers, a Cleveland Clinic psychologist.
Fall is short. Because fall is a transitional time between summer and winter, we also view it as more transitory. Thanks to the “rarity effect”, we tend to place higher value on things we can’t have all the time. ____37____
Fall provides stability and routine. For families with children, returning to school in the fall also provides a sense of predictability and routine. Dr Albers says that during the fall, kids tend to return to their set schedules. ____38____
Fall weather makes it easier to get outdoors. A blazing summer sun may keep people indoors. ____39____ “The outdoor activity raises the oxygen level in our brains, which helps us to think clearer and feel calmer,” Dr Albers says.
____40____ Cooler temperatures and an earlier sunset may promote a more comfortable room and a more reliable bedtime routine — increasing our odds of getting the seven to nine hours of sleep we need.
A. Fall also helps us sleep better.
B. That may make us feel even more attached to it.
C. Fall also provides suitable environment for planting.
D. We can buy more seasonal products during this period.
E. These sights and sounds help the brain release dopamine.
F. And all of us tend to grow better with a little extra structure in our lives.
G. But fall’s milder temperatures lend themselves to spending time outside.

Emma loved singing, but she was very shy. She often sang only when she was alone in her room. John, her best friend, believed in her and often said, “Your voice is wonderful. Don’t hide it.” When the school announced a talent show, John pushed her to join. Emma shook her head many times, but in the end, she signed up for the talent show.
For the next two weeks, Emma practiced every night. She stood in front of the mirror, holding a hairbrush as if it were a microphone. At first, her voice was soft and unsteady, but little by little it grew clearer. Still, every time she thought about standing in front of a large crowd, her hands began to sweat and her stomach felt tight.
Finally, the day of the show arrived. The school hall was full of students, teachers, and parents. The air was filled with noise and excitement. Backstage, Emma’s heart beat so fast that she thought others could hear it. She held the microphone tightly, her knees shaking. When her name was called, she walked out into the bright lights, which were so strong that she could hardly see the audience.
The music started, but then something went wrong. The sound system suddenly failed, and the hall became completely silent. A murmur spread through the crowd. Emma froze, her throat dry, her hands cold. Her first thought was to turn and run away.
Then she saw her best friend John in the front row. Her friend was smiling and mouthing the words, “You can do it.” Emma’s fear battled with her wish to sing. She knew that if she walked away now, she would regret it in the future. The hall was waiting. All eyes were on her. Emma knew the moment of decision had come. Emma opened her mouth and began to sing.

A
The global population is aging as life expectancy rises and the fertility rate declines.
C 22. C 23. B

C
D 29. D 30. A 31. C
根据第二段最后一句“Together, they teach parents how to face and move through their own emotions so they can raise emotionally healthy children. (她们一同告诉家长如何面对并疏导自身的情绪,从而养育出情绪健康的孩子。)”可知,两位作者在书中指导父母应对、处理自身的情绪,对应选项D“Approaches to managing parents’ own emotions. (管理父母自身情绪的方法。)”。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“‘Emotions affect us every day and often get us into trouble, and they have huge repercussions for how we understand emotions of future generations,’ Hendel said. (亨德尔说:‘情绪每天都在影响我们,常常给我们带来麻烦,并且会对我们如何理解后代的情绪有着巨大的repercussions。’)”可知,情绪每天都在影响我们,常常给我们带来麻烦,并且后文提到对下一代的影响,说明情绪的影响是长期的、深远的,由此可推知repercussions表示“持久的影响、后果”。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“A lot of people have never considered their feelings, and they don’t even acknowledge they have emotions, believing that emotions are under their conscious control, if they are tough enough. But we have emotions to help us survive. They are rapid-action programs for movement. Think about it: If a lion were to burst into the room where you are right now, you’d run before your thinking brain could say, “Oh, here comes a lion. Run!” The purpose of an emotion is to make us move in adaptive ways.
根据文章最后一句“When we can navigate our own emotions, we raise kids who can do the same. (当我们能够处理好自己的情绪,我们培养出来的孩子也同样可以做到。)”可知,父母先学会调节自身情绪,孩子也会习得同样的能力,也就是父母会成为孩子情绪管理的榜样。
D
A 33. B 34. B 35. C

E 37. B 38. F 39. G 40. A
上文“think golden sunlight hitting the maple leaves, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, or even the scents of damp soil in the air.(想想金色阳光洒在枫叶上、脚下落叶沙沙作响,甚至空气中湿润泥土的气息)”列举了秋日的光影、声响与气味等感官景象。E选项“These sights and sounds help the brain release dopamine.(这些景象与声音能促使大脑分泌多巴胺)”中“These sights and sounds”承接上文所列举的秋日视觉、听觉等感官体验,且与下文“They make us feel cozy, calm, and nostalgic (怀旧的)(它们让我们感到舒适、平静又怀旧)”衔接自然。
上文“Thanks to the “rarity effect”, we tend to place higher value on things we can’t have all the time.(由于“稀缺效应”,我们往往会更珍视那些无法一直拥有的事物)”说明稀缺事物更受重视。
上文“Dr Albers says that during the fall, kids tend to return to their set schedules.(阿尔伯斯博士说,在秋天,孩子们往往会回归固定的作息安排)”点明秋季让孩子恢复规律日程。F选项“And all of us tend to grow better with a little extra structure in our lives.(而且我们所有人在生活多一点条理规划时,都会成长得更好)”承接上文,由孩子的固定作息延伸到所有人都能从规律有序的生活中获益,句中“structure”与上文“set schedules”相呼应。
上文“A blazing summer sun may keep people indoors.(盛夏的烈日可能会让人们待在室内)”说明炎热天气阻碍人们外出。G选项“But fall’s milder temperatures lend themselves to spending time outside.(但秋天更为温和的气温适合人们待在户外)”与上文形成转折,引出秋日适宜户外活动的内容,引出下文“The outdoor activity raises the oxygen level in our brains...(户外活动会提升我们大脑中的氧气含量……)”。
下文“Cooler temperatures and an earlier sunset may promote a more comfortable room and a more reliable bedtime routine — increasing our odds of getting the seven to nine hours of sleep we need.(更凉爽的气温和更早的日落能营造更舒适的室内环境、更固定的就寝作息——提升我们获得所需7至9小时睡眠的概率)”主要讲述秋季环境有助于提升睡眠质量。A选项“Fall also helps us sleep better.(秋天也有助于我们睡得更好)”概括本段主旨,适合作为小标题。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

One possible version:
At first, her voice was low and shaking. She could still feel her hands trembling slightly despite her efforts to calm down. A few students whispered, but she closed her eyes and focused. Slowly, her courage grew. Her voice rose, clear and pure, filling the hall. The silence of the audience only made her stronger. Every note carried her heart, and the fear melted away. By the time she reached the final line, she had sung with a voice of astonishing power and breathtaking beauty.
When she finished, the hall was still silent. Her mind went blank for a moment as she waited anxiously for the audience’s response. Emma’s stomach twisted. Had she failed? Then the audience erupted into applause, louder than she had ever imagined. Teachers nodded with pride, and her classmates jumped to their feet. John waved wildly, shouting her name. Emma bowed, her cheeks red but her eyes shining. She realized the real victory was not the applause, but the courage she had found within herself.
