A
Hundreds of years ago, ideas like flying to another city through the air sounded like dreams. Yet now scientific study has made them real. Could other fairy tales come true someday?
Sleeping Beauty
Could anyone sleep for 100 years? Probably not. The daily cycle of sleep and waking is set in your body. But animals like bears can hibernate through the winter until it warms.
If scientists can work out how animals hibernate, maybe one day people could hibernate too. It would be great for astronauts to sleep through the long space journey. But hibernating animals still grow older, so a future Sleeping Beauty might wake up as a Sleeping Grandma.
Talk to Animals
Talking to animals isn’t quite easy. But scientists are trying. Tiny cameras and microphones have collected thousands of hours of animal conversations. Powerful computer programs study animal sounds and match them with possible meanings. Soon they may let us talk back.
But there are still challenges. Many animals communicate with smells, body language, and sounds that humans can’t hear. And animals don’t think like people. So, when we think they’re giving directions to the castle, they’re more likely to be saying “This is my tree!”
Let Down Your Hair
Rapunzel lowers her long hair to let visitors in. But could hair really hold up a prince?
Surprisingly, yes! A scientific study has found out that a single hair can hold 3 ounces, the weight of a small tomato. And a common head has about 100,000 hairs. All those together could hold up a couple of elephants. A prince? No problem.
However, Rapunzel would also need a shorter tower. Human hair only grows a few feet long. The longest hair ever recorded is about 18 feet long—pretty short for a tower.
26. If astronauts could hibernate, they would ________.
A. stop growing completely B. sleep through space travel
C. need more food and water D. communicate with animals
27. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Animals think like people in giving directions.
B. Scientists have succeeded in talking back to animals.
C. A common person’s hair could hold up a giant panda.
D. Rapunzel in the fairy tale has the longest hair in history.
28. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To discuss new inventions for space travel.
B. To tell us how scientists influence fairy tales.
C. To compare different animals’ talking habits.
D. To show scientific possibilities behind fairy tales.
B
Taking notes is an important part of learning. Students listen to the teacher. They write down the important things. Or they use a computer. These days, many students take a computer to class to type their notes.
Some people think that using a computer is better. People type faster than they write. That means they can write more. If you can type fast, you can type every word the teacher says.
Computers are becoming very common in classrooms. Almost every student in university has a computer small enough to take to class in order to type notes. Fewer students write things down. So there is a trend in schools now to spend less time on teaching kids how to write. Schools are moving away from teaching younger students how to write by hand. Many people see no need for writing by hand.
However, studies advise that it is good to write things down. When people can’t write every word, they have to think about it more. They have to pick out what is important. And the act of writing seems to help them to remember. Studies show that people who write down their notes remember the information better. A new study, done by Princeton University and University of California, found that students who took notes by hand learned more than those who used a computer. In the study, 65 university students listened to the teacher and took notes with pens or computers. Then they did tests about how well they remembered and understood the lesson. Results show that pen users do better than those who take notes with their computers.
29. People think it’s better to use a computer to take notes because they can ________.
A. get more useful information
B. find everything on computer
C. type faster than they write
D. get every word the teacher says
30. If we say something is a “trend”, we may mean it is “becoming ________”.
A. possible B. simple C. common D. important
31. The writer tells us it is good to write things down by ________.
A. telling us an interesting story
B. asking and answering questions
C. giving us a piece of advice
D. showing the results of a study
32. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Schools won’t teach students how to write by hand.
B. Writing the things down can help us to remember.
C. Students need to take a computer to class in university.
D. It’s important for students to learn how to take notes.
C
Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things? If you want to grow and get better, you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, “Don’t bother trying something new.” Even when these thoughts aren’t reasonable, our anxiety can still win. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about “What if something goes wrong?”
Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, “The more scared I feel, the riskier it is.” But feelings aren’t always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we’d know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel scary at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills.
Whether you’re afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take “good risks” can improve your life. Here are good ways to help.
Balance feelings with facts.
Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that’s not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself, “What’s the real risk here?”
Take steps to succeed.
You can do many small things to lower risks. If you’re nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day—this helps you feel more prepared. It’s okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger. Each time you try something scary, you will learn to deal with uncertainty and anxiety. You’ll also get new skills and grow from mistakes. If you try out for a dance team and don’t make it, you can ask for the reason and then practise more. With practice, you’ll get better at facing risks, and your chances of success will rise.
33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first two paragraphs?
A. Avoiding risks is a smart way to stay happy.
B. Taking risks requires us to trust our feelings.
C. Our brain often tells us to face challenges bravely.
D. Our feelings often influence us to make decisions.
34. What does the underlined phrase “build your mental muscle” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Develop strength in your mind.
B. Exercise your body to stay healthy.
C. Think mainly about cheerful things.
D. Avoid situations that make you afraid.
35. What is the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2...)
A. ①②-③④⑤ B. ①②③-④⑤
C. ①②-③-④⑤ D. ①-②③-④⑤
36. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Taking smart risks can push us forward.
B. Trying many small things can reduce risks.
C. Learning clearly about real risks can help a lot.
D. Practising more can help deal with risks better.
D
“Click, click, click...” The drummer hit the drumsticks against each other to give a beat, and the band started to play. Kai played a guqin solo, and for most of the show, he played along with the rhythm of the drums. The band played faster and faster. Kai’s classmates jumped to their feet, clapping and screaming. When the music ended, there was an awkward silence. They all looked at the teachers.
Mr Li asked, “What were you trying to express?”
Kai murmured, “I wanted to do something different...to modernize the guqin’s sound.”
“Well, it’s a good try. But you know it has over 3,000 years of history. I don’t think you’ve presented the characteristics well,” said Mr Li. “The music was...We could hardly hear the guqin,” added Miss Zhou. “I’m afraid I can’t give you high marks.”
“Please, can I have another chance?” begged Kai.
They finally agreed.
Alone in the hall later, Kai sat in his chair, feeling a little sad. “I understand what you were trying to do,” Kai looked up and saw Miss Zhou by his side. “But before you can break the rules, you have to master them.”
Kai was puzzled. What did she mean?
“The guqin is connected to nature. The bottom board represents the ground, and the rounded top board represents the sky. A wonderful guqin performance shows the harmony between people and nature.”
“Miss Zhou, is it fine to play the guqin with other instruments?”
“Because it is so quiet,” replied Miss Zhou, “it’s usually played alone. Sometimes, it can be played with the dizi or another guqin. Every note matters. And you know, there’s Chinese philosophy behind every form of art. That’s what makes Chinese art special. We should try hard to keep the value of traditions and connect them with modern life.”
“Is it true that Confucius played the guqin?”
“Exactly. Confucius believed that music was necessary for a well-rounded education. It could help a person develop his inner self.”
“Can I make it modern?” Kai was wondering if he had asked a stupid question.
“Ancient musicians followed traditions to show respect. To modernize it, try to find the right way to keep the value. How will you change your piece?”
“I’m not sure yet,” said Kai. “But I’m going to do something different again.”
That night, Kai kept thinking about the next show. “How can I present the guqin and balance the traditional spirit with a modern touch?” he wondered.
Then, he had an idea...

Simple songs play an important role in kids’ life. They can change a kid’s life forever. Think about it, you may still remember some songs from when you were little. The same thing happens today. Songs can help kids learn faster and remember new things better in daily life.
Music and speaking both have rhythms. When kids sing, they can feel the rhythms. In talking, we use stops and stress on syllables or words to show feelings and important points. Songs and rhymes can help us remember different kinds of things. Music goes to many parts of the brain, and gets stored in different memory places. When kids store memories in more places, they can remember things better.
Kids learn languages faster by singing than by listening to long talks. Singing helps kids learn new words and expressions quickly. If your kid is young, singing is a good way to teach him new words and expressions. Singing more times helps turn what they learn into long-term memory. Small differences in spoken language can influence young kids’ reading. Consonants such as “b” and “p” are hard for kids to tell apart on paper, but they can learn from songs. This can help them know the difference when reading.
Also, songs can improve kids’ creativity. When kids listen to songs, they often imagine different pictures and stories in their minds, which helps with their creative thinking. What’s more, singing songs together with friends or family can make kids more confident and help them have better social skills. They can share happiness through music and learn how to work together with others.

A
Hundreds of years ago, ideas like flying to another city through the air sounded like dreams.
B 27. C 28. D
根据Sleeping Beauty部分中“It would be great for astronauts to sleep through the long space journey.”
根据Let Down Your Hair部分中“And a common head has about 100,000 hairs. All those together could hold up a couple of elephants.”
C 30. C 31. D 32. B
根据第二段“Some people think that using a computer is better. People type faster than they write.”
根据前文“Computers are becoming very common in classrooms... Fewer students write things down. So there is a trend in schools now to spend less time on teaching kids how to write.”
根据第三段“However, studies advise that it is good to write things down... A new study, done by Princeton University and University of California, found that students who took notes by hand learned more than those who used a computer.”
根据第三段“And the act of writing seems to help them to remember. Studies show that people who write down their notes remember the information better.”
D 34. A 35. A 36. A
根据第二段“The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts.”
“build your mental muscle”和“develop strength in your mind”表意一致,故选A。

根据周老师的话“But before you can break the rules, you have to master them.”以及“To modernize it, try to find the right way to keep the value.”

Dear all,
It’s my great honor to share my experience about English learning here.
First of all, I keep reading English texts aloud every morning to improve my pronunciation. I also spend half an hour listening to English songs every day, which helps me get used to the language.
I used to be weak in spoken English and was afraid to speak in public. To solve this, I joined the English club and practiced talking with my classmates as much as possible.
I think learning is a lifelong journey. As long as we keep trying and never fall behind, we will make progress. In the future, I plan to read more English novels and improve my writing skills.
Thank you for listening!
