The holidays are the best time to ask the elders in your family for advice. For most people, the approaching holiday season includes more time with the extended family, including the elder generation.
Unfortunately, older adults are often unseen in the popular media. Yet there's a big body of evidence that shows the benefits of older adults' wisdom and the value of developing communication across generations.
First, over the course of human history, older people have played very important roles as advice-givers. Anthropological (人类学) research shows that survival in pre-literate societies was dependent on the knowledge of the oldest members.
In recent times, most of the researches about intergenerational communication occur within formal programs, such as ones including older adults in public schools or having youth visit assisted living facilities. Also, you can apply many of the lessons of the researches to your own family gatherings.
There is clear evidence that it is good for young people to spend time with older adults. The youth who participated in intergenerational programs showed more respect toward older adults, less anxiety, and higher self-esteem. Research also shows that interacting with younger people is good for older adults. A systematic review found that older adults who participated in intergenerational programs were likely to experience more satisfaction with their lives, higher self-esteem and fewer symptoms of depression. Interactions during intergenerational programs can be positive even when an older adult is experiencing memory or cognitive problems.
Having children teach computer or video games to the older generations can be a fun way to spend time together. A study found that intergenerational games can help family members to bond. Another idea is to encourage the youth to ask older family members for their advice about life.
The youth can ask older adults specific questions about the lessons they learned from their life experiences.
The take-home message is that time with older relatives is one of the true gifts of the holiday season. Make the most of it by spending time with the older generation!
41. Which of the following statements would the author most probably agree with?
A. The popular media attaches great importance to the old.
B. Holidays are the perfect time to stay with old people.
C. Today's people like turning to the elderly for advice.
D. Old people become unwise due to their aging.
42. Why did the author mention the anthropological research in the third paragraph?

While learning the science lessons, I used to get a doubt — why ear, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat heavy food. Isn’t it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch (强度) does change after a heavy meal.
We usually give credit of the taste to our tongue, but do you know that unless saliva (唾液) dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten. Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue. Try to dry off your tongue and mouth with tissue paper and then taste something.
Women are much better smellers than men. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly pinpoint the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50,000 different scents (气味), which are strongly tied to the memories.
Pupils (瞳孔) do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a much delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment. Even a small noise can dilate (扩大) their pupils, change the focus and blur (使模糊) their vision. If you do not wear glasses or contact lens due to having a 6/6 vision, you are just among the one third of the human population. It is now statistically proved that only one third of the population has perfect vision, the rest all are either wearing glasses or are trying to read with a compromised vision.
Each and every one of us has a particular or individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except for the identical twins. This smell is very subtle (微妙的) yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. Many of us can pinpoint the smell of our significant friends and colleagues. A significant part of this phenomenon is guided by genetics but it is also modified by the environment, diet and personal hygiene. This all together creates the unique chemistry that is individualistic for each person.
46. We can learn from paragraph 1 that ______.
A. our hearing is as good as before we have a full meal
B. all sensory organs are connected and can be exchanged
C. sensory organs’ functions can never be changed for their particular character
D. we feel and learn about the world around us through our sensory organs
47. What may happen after you have had a rich lunch?
A. Your eyes become dim.
B. You may feel energetic and fresh.
C. Your hearing pitch may decrease.
D. Your tongue may lose the function of taste.
48. What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A. Our tongue can’t be dried while eating something.
B. If your tongue is dried without any saliva on it, it will not work.
C. Tissue paper is the only thing that can be used to dry out tongues.
D. If your tongue is dried with tissue paper, it may work as well as before.
49. What makes each person different from anyone else except twins?

A. The functions of sensory organs.
B. The connectivity of sensory organs.

Many years ago, I bumped into an old friend of mine. He had devoted his life to acting but had never been quite successful. In his middle age, he seemed defeated and sad.
I thought of his dogged (顽强的) perseverance. Was it smart or foolish? What could he have achieved? Had he quit his dream of acting and moved on? Our culture does not look kindly upon quitting. Failure is perfectly acceptable as long as it eventually results in success.
We chant (反复喊着) “Winners never quit” and “If at first you don’t succeed, try again. ” We lap up (欣然接受) stories of persistence, of the author who submitted stories for years before her novels were published or of the athlete who trained since childhood to win gold at the Olympics.
Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published. For every Olympic athlete, there are innumerable (无数的) others who trained every day of their lives and never made the cut.
We all agree that doing the same things and expecting a different result is unwise. So why do we believe that persevering through failure after failure is a good idea? We consider quitting in the face of failure to be weak. We believe that perseverance is the key to success. Perseverance is only one part of success. You need talent or skill, as well as passion and drive. Luck and timing are also key to any great success.
Our society believes that anything is possible, as long as you “believe”. But not everyone can make it. Quitting when you’ re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing to do. Obviously, if you enjoy a pursuit, regardless of its outcome, you should continue. If you knew your novel would never be published, would you want to write? If you could never be a champion swimmer, would you still train? Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else.
Failure is not always the path to success. Sometimes, failure is the door to something new.
51. What do we know about the author’s old friend?
A. He was dissatisfied with his acting performance.
B. He switched his dream of acting to something else.
C. He failed in acting because of a lack of persistence.
D. He failed in all attempts to become a successful actor.
52. The author mentioned JK Rowling mainly to ______.
A. explain how she achieved success in writing
B. show that success doesn’t happen to everyone
C. prove that success favors those who are perseverant
D. encourage readers to hold onto their dream until they succeed

A. Made out of their dreams.
B. Met the required standard.
C. Improved their performances.
D. Promised to be good players.

D. Ask friends or family members for help.
55. What is the author’s attitude toward perseverance?
A. It makes anything possible.
B. It is not necessary for success.
C. It is not the only part of success.
D. It works well regards of outcome.
D 52. B 53. B 54. A 55. C
根据第一段的“He had devoted his life to acting but had never been quite successful.(他把一生都献给了表演,但从未获得过成功)”可知,作者的老朋友想成为一名成功的演员的一切努力都失败了。
根据第四段的“Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published.(坚持会得到成功的回报,但这并不会回报每一个人。对于每一个JK罗琳来说,都有成千上万的有抱负的作家永远无法出版自己的作品。)”可知,作者提到JK罗琳主要是表明成功是不会发生在每个人身上的,故选B。
【53题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段的“Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person.(坚持会得到成功的回报,但这并不会回报每一个人。)”
根据倒数第二段的“Quitting when you’ re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing to do.(当你没有领先的时候放弃有时候是最聪明的做法。)”和“Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else.(有时候,把你的精力放在其他事情上是明智的。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第三段的“Perseverance is only one part of success. You need talent or skill, as well as passion and drive. Luck and timing are also key to any great success.(坚持不懈只是成功的一部分。你需要天赋或技能,以及激情和动力。运气和时机也是任何伟大成功的关键。)”可知,作者认为坚持不懈不是成功的唯一部分,还需要天赋或技能,激情和动力以及运气和时机,故选C。
V.阅读表达(共5个小题,每题2分,共10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
For years, I played around with writing. I wrote when I felt like it. Then one day, a friend asked what my dream was. When I said it was to be a writer, he said these words that changed my life, “You don’t have to want to be a writer. You are a writer; you just need to write.” So I started calling myself a writer. Everywhere I went, I introduced myself as “Jeff Goins, Writer,” and even put it in email signatures and on my Facebook page. And you know what? I started acting like it. Eventually, I even began to believe it. It turns out that sometimes you do have to fake it before you make it.
The lesson here is simple: If you wait for someone to give you permission to start pursuing your dream, you’ll be waiting for a long time. You have to begin before you think you’re ready.
After I decided to pursue my dream, I still had to find the time to do it. Working a full-time job and having a wife and other things to do, I didn’t have unlimited free time. I had to find time to write. For me, that meant getting up early. Like, 5:00 a. m. early. Every morning, I would wake up, get my coffee, and write for two hours. At first, this was difficult;I had to force myself out of bed and downstairs before the sun rose. But eventually, it became habitual. I did it without even thinking about it. And soon, what started as a discipline became a daily joy.
By doing this, I learned the excuse I had given myself — “I don’t have enough time” — wasn’t true. I did have enough time; it was just hiding in “inconvenient” places.
These days, most people I meet are talking about their dreams. For example, they want to bravely pursue a successful career. However, they’re doing it all wrong. They think they need to take a huge leap out into the unknown when, in fact, the opposite is true. So if you have a dream, just take action. And don’t say you don’t have time for it.
56. How did the friend’s words change his attitude towards writing? (no more than 10 words)
57. What does the underlined word “fake” mean in the first paragraph? (no more than 1 word)
58. How did the author find time for writing? (no more than 15 words)
59. What does the author advise us to do to pursue a successful career? (no more than 10 words)
60. Suppose you’re crazy about playing basketball, but you have no time for it. How will you deal with it?
56. He started calling himself a writer.
57. Pretend
58. By reducing his sleeping time.
59. If you have a dream, just take action.
60. I will make time to play basketball, for example, make good use of half an hour after school.
根据第一段“When I said it was to be a writer, he said these words that changed my life, “You don’t have to want to be a writer. You are a writer; you just need to write.” So I started calling myself a writer.(当我说我想成为一名作家时,他说的这句话改变了我的生活:“你不必非得成为一名作家。 你是一个作家;你只需要写下来。” 所以我开始称自己为作家 )”可知朋友的话让作者开始称自己为作家。故答案为He started calling himself a writer.
根据第一段“I started acting like it. Eventually, I even began to believe it. It turns out that sometimes you do have to fake it before you make it. (我开始表现得像。 最后,我甚至开始相信了。事实证明,有时候你必须在成功之前fake成功 )”可推知“fake”意思是“假装”,与pretend同意。故答案为Pretend.
【58题详解】
考查推理判断。根据第三段“For me, that meant getting up early. Like, 5:00 a. m. early. Every morning, I would wake up, get my coffee, and write for two hours.(对我来说,这意味着早起。 大概凌晨5点吧。 每天早上,我醒来,喝杯咖啡,然后写作两个小时)”可推知作者通过减少他的睡眠时间,挤出时间写作。故答案为By reducing his sleeping time.
If you have a dream, just take action.
I will make time to play basketball, for example, make good use of half an hour after school.

I’m writing this letter to extend my sincere gratitude for the copy of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea you sent me. I’ve always been fascinated by Jules Verne’s sci-fi imagination, so your gift really made my day. I can’t wait to dive into the underwater adventure Captain Nemo leads.
Since you’re taking the elective course on Chinese literature in your university, I’d like to recommend Tao Te Ching to you. This short but profound book covers the core ideas of traditional Chinese philosophy, and its language is simple enough for foreign learners to grasp the basic thoughts.

A. The number of sensory organs. B. The sensitivity of sensory organs.
C. The particular smell of a person. D. The style of one’s behavior.
50. What’s the text mainly about?

53. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph 4?
A. Made out of their dreams.
B. Met the required standard.
C. Improved their performances.

54. What does the author advise us to do if we’ve failed many times?
A. Make an effort to try new things.
B. Stick to your goal until we succeed.

55. What is the author’s attitude toward perseverance?
