In January, 2021, Abrielle’s world fell apart. Her mother unexpectedly passed away. As anyone who has experienced this knows, the journey isn’t a straight one. It flows with some days being significantly harder than others.
It was during a “particularly hard week” when Abrielle, 24, decided to go to a second-hand store to be away from the emotions. She used to do that with her mom, and no one loved a good deal more than she did. “I can get a purse,” Abrielle thought.
Abrielle did end up finding “the cutest purse”. However, she got more than a purse. Inside the purse was a handwritten note, “When you read this you will be far from me in miles but not in my heart. I’m here. I love you.”
She immediately took it as a sign from her beloved mom. “I knew it was from her,” she said. “I always check the inside of the bag before I buy it to make sure it’s in good condition. When I stuck my hand in it, I felt the piece of paper and when I took it out and found the note, I read it out loud. It just confirmed that she was with us,” she added. “She’s always with us.”
To Abrielle, the note is a beautiful reminder that the love she shared with her mom lives on.
And whether you believe in fate (命运) or not, you have to admit the universe has its way of showing up just when she needs it to. After all, what are the odds that a stranger penned a note with the exact words she needed to hear, placed it in the exact bag she was looking for, and that bag ended up in the exact second-hand store she was shopping in? Pretty astronomical.
And yet, here we are. Life is full of magical moments that bring us the comfort and connection we need most, reminding us that love is never truly lost.
4. What’s the main reason that Abrielle went to a second-hand store?
A. She followed her mom’s advice.
B. She used it as a way to reduce sorrow.
C. She was badly in need of a purse.
D. She wanted to get some bargains.
5. Who probably wrote the note?
A. Abrielle’s friend. B. Mother of Abrielle.
C. Boss of the store. D. The purse’s original owner.
6. Why did Abrielle check the inside of the bag?
A. To get out the money. B. To find the note.
C. To ensure its quality. D. To feel its size.
7. What does the author want to tell us through the story?
A. Love never truly dies. B. The purse is a reminder of love.
C. Life is full of uncertainties. D. Losing a family member hurts.

The Rubik’s Cube (魔方) was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik. It rapidly became a popular puzzle worldwide. At first, people just wanted to solve the puzzle. But soon, one group of users had a new goal—to solve the cube as quickly as possible. These people are known as “speedcubers”.
The fastest human speedcubers can solve a cube in about 3.05 seconds. In 2020, a group of students at MIT set a record with a robot that solved the cube in 0.380 seconds. That made an impression on Matthew Patrohay, who was in high school at the time. Now Mr. Patrohay is a student of Purdue University. He and three other students have built a robot that can solve a Rubik’s Cube far faster. Their “Purdubik’s Cube” robot can solve a cube in 0.103 seconds.
The team built the robot as part of a senior project. The students met through a program that helps students get real-world work experience. They use cameras to rapidly detect the colors of each of the cube’s squares. The robot’s computer program uses special strategies to solve the puzzle quickly. And its motions are very precisely controlled.
To work so quickly, the project uses a special cube that sits in the middle of the robot’s “arms”. These arms allow the robot to turn the sides of the cube. But at such high speeds, an ordinary cube will fall apart, so the students had to create a stronger cube that would hold together. Mr. Patrohay says the robot is so fast that “before you even realize it’s moving, we’ve solved it.”
The students won a school design contest last December with Purdubik’s Cube, and they continued to improve the robot after that. Now they’re excited to have broken the world record.
One of the students’ professors says he’s not surprised. “Take brilliant students, give them the tools and opportunities,” he says, “and they’ll blow your mind.”
8. What inspired Matthew Patrohay to build a faster robot?
A. A high school science project.
B. A robot record in solving the cube.
C. His professor’s encouragement.
D. His passion for Rubik’s Cube.
9. Why did the students have to design a stronger cube?
A. To match the high speed.
B. To fit the robot’s arms.
C. To use it on a very frequent basis.
D. To improve motion precision.
10. What does the professor feel about his students?
A. Shocked and pleased. B. Regretful but understanding.
C. Proud and satisfied. D. Optimistic but doubtful.
11. What can be the best title of this text?
A. MIT Students and Their Fast Robot
B. New Record for Robot Cube Solving
C. A Robot That Solves a Cube Instantly
D. The Fascinating History of the Rubik’s Cube

China’s security authorities have recently alerted the public to potential risks in certain overseas-developed online games. While these digital entertainment products may appear innocent, some contain negative content that poses risks to both social values and national security. Citizens, particularly adolescents, are urged to heighten their awareness and maintain a critical perspective when engaging with such online platforms.
Of particular concern is the presence of damaging stereotypes. Some games deliberately design characters infused with Chinese cultural symbols, portraying them as violent lawbreakers. Such misrepresentations not only offend the Chinese people but also spread cross-cultural bias. More alarmingly, some games intentionally twist China’s territorial boundaries — for instance, by inaccurately depicting border regions or presenting Taiwan as a separate country from the mainland. These actions cross a red line, challenging the nation’s core interests and territorial integrity, which must be defended at all costs.
Beyond cultural misstatement, a more severe threat has emerged: foreign intelligence agencies are reportedly using games as an underhand means of intelligence gathering. They employ tricky strategies to bypass official checks and reach potential targets. In one documented case, a game rewarded players with in-game items for watching advertisements. However, these ads were actually disguised messages aimed at recruiting spies. Posing as “job opportunities” or “collaboration offers,” they tempted players with high pay, promising them a chance to make money from their knowledge, a classic method of targeted hunting.
To protect themselves and the nation, players are advised to take specific precautions. It is crucial to download games only from official app stores or other legal sources to avoid unsafe software. More importantly, everyone must learn to identify these hidden traps. When encountering suspicious offers that seem too good to be true, one should recognize their true intent. The public is urged to stay vigilant online and report any potential threats to national security through official channels like the 12339 hotline and the official reporting website, thereby contributing to the collective safety of everyone.
12. What does the underlined word “stereotypes” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. deeply-rooted biased beliefs B. dishonest fictional characters
C. recognizable cultural symbols D. intentionally twisted boundaries
13. Which of the following can best illustrate a “targeted hunting” in paragraph 3?
A. A hidden trap to obtain players’ expertise.
B. A risky opportunity to earn high payment.
C. A disguised advertisement for tricky rewards.
D. A purposeful attempt to avoid official monitoring.
14. What is the main approach mentioned to ensure security online?
A. Downloading games from official sources only.
B. Learning to spot hidden traps and stay alerted.
C. Avoiding all suspicious online offers completely.
D. Using the 12339 hotline to report threats timely.
15. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Safety Strategies of Digital Exposure B. The Increasing Concern of Online Platforms
C. The Hidden Dangers of Foreign Online Games D. The Cultural Risks of Overseas Digital Products

Sophie Williams had always loved drawing. Ever since she was little, she would spend hours sketching (素描) anything that came to mind — animals, landscapes, and even imaginary creatures. When her art teacher, Mrs Reynolds, announced that the school was hosting an art competition, Sophie felt both excited and nervous. It was her chance to show everyone what she could do, but the thought of competing against other students made her anxious. “What if my drawing isn’t good enough?” she wondered aloud one evening while working on her sketch.
Her elder brother, Daniel, overheard her and gave her some advice. “You don’t need to worry about the result,” he said. “Just focus on doing your best. Remember, art is about expressing yourself, not about being perfect.” His words made Sophie feel a little better, but as the competition deadline approached, she still felt unsure. She spent days working on her drawing, trying to make every detail just right. She chose to draw a large oak tree in a field, with the sun setting behind it. The colors were vibrant (鲜艳的), and she added delicate details to the leaves and grass.
When Sophie brought her finished drawing to school, she saw other students’ work displayed on the walls. There were paintings, collages (拼贴画), and digital art — all of them impressive. She shook with tension as she placed her drawing alongside the others. “Maybe mine isn’t good enough after all,” she thought, feeling small compared to the talent around her. Mrs Reynolds noticed her hesitation and smiled, “Your work is beautiful, Sophie. Remember, it’s not about comparing yourself to others — it’s about doing what you love.”
The next day, the school’s lecture hall was packed with students, teachers, and parents for the awards ceremony. Sophie’s heart raced as the judge began to announce the winners. She wasn’t expecting her name to be called, but deep down, she hoped for a small chance.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 个左右;
With every passing second, Sophie sat nervously in her seat.

Walking off the stage, Sophie was greeted with a big hug from Mrs Reynolds.

B 5. D 6. C 7. A

A 13. A 14. B 15. C
画线单词下文的句子提到“Some games deliberately design characters infused with Chinese cultural symbols, portraying them as violent lawbreakers. (一些游戏故意将带有中国文化符号的角色设计成暴力违法者)”,紧接着提到这种“misrepresentations (歪曲/错误呈现)”会传播“cross-cultural bias (跨文化偏见)”。由此可知,“stereotypes”在这里指的是对某一群体根深蒂固的、带有偏见的刻板印象。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的句子“In one documented case, a game rewarded players with in-game items for watching advertisements. However, these ads were actually disguised messages aimed at recruiting spies. Posing as ‘job opportunities’ or ‘collaboration offers,’ they tempted players with high pay, promising them a chance to make money from their knowledge, a classic method of targeted hunting.
根据最后一段的句子“To protect themselves and the nation, players are advised to take specific precautions.
根据第一段“China’s security authorities have recently alerted the public to potential risks in certain overseas-developed online games. While these digital entertainment products may appear innocent, some contain negative content that poses risks to both social values and national security. Citizens, particularly adolescents, are urged to heighten their awareness and maintain a critical perspective when engaging with such online platforms.(我国公安网信安全部门近日提醒民众警惕部分境外网游潜藏的各类风险。

With every passing second, Sophie sat nervously in her seat. She stared at her shoes, too afraid to listen closely to the names being read out. Several first and second prizes went to students whose art she had admired greatly. Just as Sophie prepared to accept that she would win nothing, the judge mentioned a special creativity award. “This piece captures warm peace of nature with sincere feelings — the winner is Sophie Williams!” Shocked, Sophie froze for a second before walking up to the stage unsteadily. She held the prize tightly, her eyes shining with joyful tears.
Walking off the stage, Sophie was greeted with a big hug from Mrs Reynolds. Her brother Daniel also waved wildly from the crowd with a wide smile. Sophie realized her brother and teacher were right. Art was never a competition against others. What mattered most was pouring her true feelings into every line and color. Later, she kept her award on the desk beside her sketchbook. From then on, she drew without anxiety, simply enjoying the pleasure of expressing herself through art every single day.
