Enric Sala is a former university professor, and left the academic field to become a full-time marine
explorer and researcher. In 2008,he founded Pristine Seas,a project that combines exploration,
research, public policy and media to inspire the creation of ocean protection areas. It aims to protect at
least 30%of the ocean by 2030 for the benefit of nature and humanity.Less than 8%is currently
protected.
To date, the project has helped to create 29 of the largest ocean reserves on the planet, covering an
area of over 6.9 million square kilometers, which is twice the size of India. The achievements are the
result of Enric's 36 trips across the globe, from the Southern Line Islands to Greenland and Alaska.
The ongoing ocean protection efforts reflect Enric's lifelong passion. He says he admires a famous
French filmmaker and undersea explorer.Growing up in Catalonia in the 1970s,he would sit in front of
the TV watching his hero every Sunday. He was fascinated by the amazing places, the brave underwater
explorers and the wonderful creatures. That was all he wanted to do in his life.
Enric writes that in the last century alone, humans have removed over 90%of the ocean's large fish,
yet less than 8%of the ocean is under protection. It is possible to make the ocean continuously beneficial
to people and the planet. All humans must do is to rewild the sea.In his book,The Nature of Nature:
Why We Need the Wild, published in 2020,Enric writes that preserving the planet's wild places,on land
and in the ocean,is essential for our continued existence and financial well-being.The process of
rewilding,or recovering and protecting natural processes, allows nature to do the hard work for us.
Mentioning the successes of wildlife recovery in Yellowstone National Park,Mozambique National
Parks, and the Southern Line Islands,Enric adds that our natural world can be a lasting and strong
engine of regeneration, and that we just need to give it some space.
24.What can we learn about the Pristine Seas project's achievements?
A.It protected over 90%of large fish.
B.It helped create 29 ocean reserves.
C.It doubled the size of wild habitats.
D.It completed 36 trips to Africa safely.
25.What inspired Enric Sala's career choice as a child?
A.A TV hero exploring the ocean.
B.A film about undersea creatures.
C.A book by a French filmmaker.
D.A trip to the Southern Line Islands.
26.Why is rewilding the ocean important according to Enric?
A.It supports further ocean exploration work
B.It draws more people to protect marine life
C.It matters to human survival and economy.
D.It enlarges the area of current ocean reserves.
高二英语期末试题(XC)-4-(共10页)
27.What does Enric mainly stress in the last paragraph?
A.Nature can renew itself if given enough space.
B.We should learn from past protection projects.
C.Wildlife recovery can't be completely achieved.
D.Many national parks have achieved great success.

Many people know that helping others feels good. But now,a new US study shows it might actually
be good for your brain,too.
Researchers followed over 30,000 adults for 20 years, studying how thinking skills changed over
time and comparing this with helping frequency. Those who regularly gave their time to help others had
brains that aged more slowly.Their thinking ability declined 15 to 20 percent less than that of those who
helped others less frequently.
The help did not have to be formal volunteering. Both formal and informal support worked.Formal
helping included volunteering for a charity or community group.Informal helping meant simple acts like
giving a neighbor a ride to the doctor's or babysitting for a friend.Regular small actions brought great
merits, with the best results at two to four hours of helping per week.
The study also used data from the Health and Retirement Study, tracking Americans over age 51.
What made the study stand out was that researchers considered other interfering()factors affecting
brain health, such as education, income, and physical and mental health.Even after adjusting for these
influences, the link between helping others and slower thinking decline remained strong.People who
stopped helping others completely had poorer brain function.
This research adds to growing evidence that helping others is not just good for communities, but also
for the people doing it.It may reduce stress, make people happier, and give them a sense of purpose.
In fact, the same research team recently found that helping others also lowers stress-related inflammation
()in the body.Inflammation is linked to many health problems, including memory loss and diseases
like Alzheimer's.
As people get older and face risks of feeling lonely or isolated, this study shows the importance of
keeping them involved in meaningful ways."Many older adults can still give a lot to the people around
them,"said lead researcher Sae Hwang Han."And they may also be the ones who receive the greatest
rewards from continuing to help."
28.What did the new study in the USA find about helping others?
A.It lowers physical health risks.
B.It makes people feel anxious daily.
C.It slows down brain aging.
D.It helps communities grow faster.
29.Which of the following can replace the underlined word "merits"in paragraph 3?
A.Difficulties.
B.Advantages.
C.Reputations.
D.Mistakes.
30.What can be concluded about the research design?
A.It studied only memory-loss patients.
B.It ignored people's mental health
C.It removed various interfering elements.
D.It surveyed people of various ages.
高二英语期末试题(XC)-5-(共10页)
31.Why does the author include Han's words in the last paragraph?
A.To question the study's conclusion.
B.To call on young people to volunteer more.
C.To criticize society's view on aging.
D.To suggest a solution for seniors'loneliness.

Domestic service robots once existed only in science fiction, but this dream is gradually becoming a
reality. Many tech developers are now racing to create humanoid robots that can handle daily housework
such as folding laundry, washing dishes,or even pushing kids on a swing.A growing number of research
groups have joined in this trend over recent years.Although affordable household humanoid robots are still
years away from reaching ordinary families, the whole industry is pouring plenty of effort into related
research.
Since a classic cartoon introduced the image of a robot maid in the 1960s,creating intelligent service
robots has become a shared dream worldwide. This brand-new industry has great market potential with no
clear leader yet.Nevertheless, developing fully functional humanoid robots is full of challenges. The tech
industry has witnessed large-scale projects end in failure due to various difficulties. That's why some
experts suggest developers focus on more realistic Al applications first, such as robot taxis or robot
vacuums(真空吸尘器).
Creating a humanoid robot that can cook dinner and clean toilets is far more difficult. It requires
breakthroughs in hardware, not software.Accurately imitating human muscle movements and
distinguishing objects through touch is extremely costly and technically demanding.Even a revolution in
artificial intelligence alone cannot overcome these physical obstacles.
But AI will play a key role.Tech developers have used up most of the world's easily accessible data
for training models. What's left is data grounded in reality-from robots that learn, like children do,how
to act in the physical world.Building human-like robots that can interact with humans produces more data
for AI learning, which leads to better AI that improves the robots so they can take on more jobs.
Currently, many research teams are committed to humanoid robot technology and are making steady
progress.Major economies have recognized that the competition to build robotic servants may be the most
critical technological race of the next decade.
32.What can we know about household robots at present?
A.They are serving more ordinary families.
B.They face no major technical problems.
C.They are attracting growing research interest.
D.They have become a highly profitable industry.
33.What makes humanoid robots harder to develop than robot vacuums?
A.They require more advanced hardware.
B.They need more training data to learn.
C.They completely depend on AI software.
D.They cost too much in mass production.
34.How does AI contribute to humanoid robot development?
A.By removing all physical obstacles.
B.By collecting easily accessible data.
C.By copying human muscle movements.
D.By learning from real-world actions.

We were packing for a trip to the Galapagos Islands."Wait! You almost forgot your snorkeling
)equipment,my father said as he handed it to me."Yeah, how could I forget something so
important?"I replied,without enthusiasm."Don't worry,I'll be right by your side the entire time,"he
said.
I liked swimming in the pool but I feared swimming in the ocean.I felt helpless and out of control in
open waters.Since I recently had knee surgery, trusting my knee was going to be a challenge. My father
loved snorkeling. On past vacations,he had spent hours swimming in the water, while I had tried for a
few minutes and then returned to the beach.
Snorkeling in the Galapagos was supposed to be amazing, with various sea creatures to observe
closely thanks to the lack of dangerous sharks.I didn't want to disappoint him,but I also didn't want to
have a vacation colored by anxiety.
Hesitantly,I placed the snorkeling equipment in my suitcase.Hours later,we reached the island and
the adventure began. We walked and observed rare species. It was incredible.
On the second day,we went on a hike, and then there was a snorkeling option afterward. So,I put
on my snorkeling equipment, and we chose to start from the shore, rather than the boat,to help ease me
into the depths.
We started walking into the water, together with a group of people we had gotten to know. The sand
was shifting under our feet as the waves rolled in.I could feel my knee being pulled this way and that,
and I started panicking.I looked at my father, shaking my head.
"I don't think I can do this! It's hurting my knee.I don't even know if I can swim with it very well.
You go;I'll hang out on the beach,"I said, nearly in tears.

第二节(满分20分)
参考范文:
Just when I turned to leave,my father reached for my hand, saying,"You'll make it!""Based on
my experience,you'll succeed.Besides,we'll watch you,"he added.Motivated,I then continued
walking until we could float and begin swimming. He stayed ahead of me and constantly checked on me.
All the others stayed close to me,which gave me more confidence and a sense of security. At first, all we
could see was the murky water.I kept swimming. The water got colder, and the whole process of putting
my face in the water while breathing was unnatural.Though nervous,I persevered, trying to adapt to the
experience.
Then came all the beauty. There were schools of fish, which had beautiful colors and shapes. And
there were rocks covered with red starfish.I felt amazed and joyful. While swimming,we saw more
amazing creatures, such as sea lions twirling and turtles gracefully gliding beneath us.We even saw
various seafloor plants. The entire snorkeling was breathtaking.Had I remained on the beach,I would
have missed this wonder.Now I don't fear the sea.And I know,when I'm doing something new,I just
need to try.
