I packed my family into our old car and set off on a 3,000 km trip from Sydney to the outback(),hoping to
create lasting memories for the kids.My plan seemed ambitious covering such distances with two young kids in
the back might sound crazy to a sensible person.
For most of the journey,we often felt annoyed, arguing about the remaining distance and the discomfort in the
car.I'd had outback road trip memories as a kid and wanted my city-raised children to see the vast open spaces.
At a bird-hide near Forbes,we watched a swamp with bright green water and dead trees.Eager to share
Australian folk stories,I confidently told the kids that a mysterious creature lived there but stumbled when they
asked me follow-up questions.Their enthusiasm for the smallest joy knocked me for six.At a roadside motel that
looked like a movie set,the kids loved being woken by the night trains, cheering each time.
After three days,we reached Broken Hill a town dominated by a big slag heap, just as remarkable as I
remembered.Surrounded by kilometers of mineral-rich land, its streets imply its mining roots.I feared the mineral
museum would bore the kids, but they yelled with joy, thinking it was real-life Minecraft.
The trip wasn't fantastic I even complained about hard mattresses on the bed and small towels. But on Easter
morning, the kids went wild for a simple egg hunt in our cheap motel room, thrilled to search every corner.I set
out to teach the kids about the far reaches of our state, when in fact the kids were the best perspective I could ask
for all along.
24.What does the phrase"knocked me for six"(paragraph 3)suggest about the author?
A.He was physically hit by the kids.
B.He was surprised and affected by their joy
C.He felt annoyed by their endless questions.
D.He failed to answer their folk story questions.
25.The kids'reaction to the mineral museum implies that
A.they had learned about mining at school
B.they preferred video games to real history
C.they were bored but pretended to be happy
D.they connected the exhibits to their own experience
26.What can we learn about the trip from the text?
第3页共8页
A.It made the kids tired of long journeys.B.It changed the kids'attitude to nature.
C.It was smooth and pleasant all the way.D.It brought unexpected gains to the author.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Precious Childhood Memories
B.Kids'Unique Travel Experience
C.A Challenging Journey to Sydney
D.An Outback Trip Beyond Expectation

That satisfying feeling after doomscrolling through endless TikTok videos or impulsively shopping online
resembles the relief of scratching an itch. This is dopamine at work,a brain chemical responsible for feelings of
reward and accomplishment.Whether engaging in viral videos or new hobbies, dopamine creates a sense of
achievement that keeps us coming back for more.
However, reliance on these dopamine hits can lead to lasting brain changes, particularly in teenagers and young
adults. This is what my team and I at London Southbank University study. We investigated which brain regions
and connections change due to increased social media engagement or"dopa-mining",as we call it.
Using social media lights up the same parts of your brain as other addictions, such as drugs, alcohol and
gambling.Scientists have found that every time you get a "like",or even watch a video you enjoy, your brain's
reward system gets activated. This is the same system that makes people feel pleasure when they win money or
eat their favorite snack.
But here's the catch:the more you use social media, the harder it can be for your brain to resist it.It's like
training your brain to long for those dopamine hits just like an addiction.
Ever wonder why social media feels so addictive? It's because your brain starts trimming neurons,a bit like
cutting away extra branches on a tree,to make the"reward pathway"faster.
This sounds efficient, but it's not great. The shorter pathway means your brain can"feel"rewards faster, but we
know from research that it can also make you more excited and less able to stop yourself from scrolling.Over
time, this trimming can cut down the size of certain brain areas, which are key for controlling emotions and
making decisions.
28.The word"dopa-mining"(paragraph 2)is used to describe
A.the chemical process of making dopamine
B.the mining industry's effect on brain health
C.the act of seeking dopamine through social media
D.the brain's natural production of reward chemicals
29.What is the function of dopamine according to the text?
A.It speeds up brain growth.
B.It produces feelings ofreward.
C.It adjusts people's emotional state.
D.It cures people's bad habits effectively
30.How does the brain's"trimming"process affect social media users?
A.It slows down the reward pathway.
B.It makes them less excited about life.
C.It weakens their self-control over scrolling.
D.It increases their ability to make decisions.
31.What is the author's attitude towards"dopamining"?
A.Supportive.B.Tolerant.
C.Concerned.
D.Unclear

Have you ever wondered why certain songs or paintings feel deeply satisfying?Language expert Jay Keyser's
research finds that repetition makes art speak to us.
Artists like jazz musician Duke Ellington and painter Andy Warhol purposefully use repetition not simply as
第4页共8页
copying,but as a clever "same,but different"skill.In Ellington's Satin Doll,for example,the rhythm repeats
while the notes stay high or low,and the song's words mirror this pattern.Warhol's soup cans appear alike at first
sight, yet each design changes a little. This skill called "same/except"by Jay Keyser in his book Play it again,Sam
makes art feel richer and more pleasant to our brains.
Interestingly, discovering repetition brings much more.Consider a photograph of the US city of Albuquerque
that is often discussed for its meaning.Look closer, and you may find that a dog sits in the center with a street sign
shadow to its right copying its shape.Recognizing this hidden pattern,as Keyser suggests, repays us with
unexpected pleasure and more.Training our eyes to notice such patterns whether in poetry, paintings or songs
unlocks new meaning.
Why does repetition create such a connection?According to Keyser, science offers an answer:the mere
exposure effect.Just as a baby grows fond of a mother's face through repeated sights,we naturally develop a
liking for familiar patterns.Advertisers use this by repeating product names to build trust.Artists harness it too
Warhol's repeated cans or a song's repeated catchy parts make us feel comforted and connected.
Keyser shows great art works with the brain's makeup. When artists repeat certain parts with changes, the art is
in line with how our minds seek order, expect patterns, and gain joy from"finding"connections though we are not
aware of it.By studying how artists skillfully apply the "same/except"skill across mediums, and by connecting
these choices with science,we gain the key to admiring creativity's universal magic. This makes everyday
experiences with music, paintings, and words much richer.
32.What do Ellington and Warhol's works have in common?
A.They reflect unique jazz culture.B.They focus on simple daily materials.
C.They create totally repeated patterns.D.They adopt the"same but different"skill.
33.What benefit does finding hidden artistic patterns bring?
A.It makes art works more popular.
B.It helps master artistic creation skills
C.It improves people's aesthetic level rapidly.
D.It brings people unexpected joy and new meaning.
34.What is the core reason for repetition's aesthetic effect?
A.The diversity of artistic mediums.
B.Artists'unique creative imagination.
C.The simplicity of repeated artistic forms.D.People's preference for familiar patterns.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Great art ignores people's brain rules.
B.Art creation is independent of science
C.The "same/except"skill fits human brain features.
D.Ordinary people cannot appreciate artistic patterns.

The Power of Small Steps
In a world that often celebrates big achievements and overnight success,it's easy to overlook the power of small,
consistent steps. Many of us set grand goals, only to feel discouraged when progress is slow or invisible, failing to
realize that lasting success is rarely built in a flash.36.
Small steps are the building blocks of great things.37It doesn't happen in a day.It changes quietly and
steadily underground.Every day,it absorbs sunlight and water, pushing its roots deeper into the soil, until one day,
it stands tall and strong,a proof of patience and persistence. Our goals are like that seed they need time and daily
care.
Small steps help form good habits. For example,if your goal is to improve your English, reading a short passage
第5页共8页
every day is better than trying to finish a thick book in one weekend.38.Consistency is key,and small
steps make consistency possible by keeping the task manageable.
Another advantage of small steps is that they reduce anxiety. When you take on a huge task,it's natural to feel
nervous. We may even give up before starting.39.You'll feel a sense of accomplishment with each small
win, which will motivate you to keep going. This positive cycle can turn even the most difficult goal into
something manageable.
Small steps teach a growth lesson. They remind us that progress, not perfection,is what matters. So,the next
time you're faced with a big goal, don't be afraid to start small 40.
A.However, breaking it into small steps helps.
B.Instead,it grows through consistent efforts.
C.Think about how a seed grows into a tall tree.
D.But small steps have the power to change this.
E.Remember, every great journey begins with a single step.
F.The former builds a habit;the latter often leads to bumout.
G.Gradual learning sticks longer and saves you from occasional hard work.

When my family moved from Beijing to a small town in England for my father's research fellowship,I
thought the hardest part would be the language.I had studied English for years and scored well on exams,so I felt
confident. But on my first day at the local high school,I realized that speaking fluent English and understanding
British teenage culture were two entirely different things.
The first challenge came at lunchtime.Students gathered in the dining hall, forming small groups with ease.I
stood alone with my tray, searching for a familiar face. Then a girl named Emma waved at me."Come sit with
us!"she called out.Relieved,I joined her table. But soon I found myself lost in their conversation. They laughed
at jokes I didn't understand and talked about TV shows I had never watched. When Emma asked,"What do you
usually do for fun back in China?"I replied,"I practice calligraphy and play the guzheng."The table went silent
for a moment,and someone whispered,"That's so cool...and so ancient."
Later that week, our history teacher assigned a group project on"Cultural Exchange in the Modem World."I
was grouped with Emma,Tom,and Jack.During our first discussion,I suggested we focus on the Silk Road.Tom
frowned and said,"That's too historical.We need something recent,like pop culture."Jack added,"Yeah,like
K-pop or Hollywood movies."I felt frustrated. They seemed to think that Chinese culture was only about the past,
while Western culture was modern and relevant.I wanted to show them that China was not just ancient history,
but a vibrant, contemporary culture with so much to offer.
That night at home,my mother played a piece on the guzheng-a modern adaptation of a classical melody
An idea suddenly struck me.I spent the next few days working secretly on a presentation, determined to bridge
the gap between their expectations and my reality.

Dear Tom,
How is everything going?I'm writing to share with you my new life as a freshman in senior
high school.
The campus impresses me greatly-modern buildings,a big library, and a lovely
playground.Teachers and classmates are kind, making me feel welcome. But high school is
tougher than junior high.Subjects are harder and there's more homework.I need better time
management and study habits. For the next three years,I plan to set clear goals and join a club
to relax.I hope to grow both academically and personally.I hope everything is going well with
you.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Paragraph 1:
The presentation day finally arrived.I walked to the front of the classroom with my laptop and
a small guzheng borrowed from the local Chinese community center.Heart pounding,I played
a modern pop melody on the guzheng, then showed photos of Chinese teens in Hanfu dancing
to hip-hop and an AI animation of classical poetry."China creates today, not just preserves
yesterday,"I declared. My classmates leaned forward, their earlier doubts replaced by genuine
fascination.Tom nodded thoughtfully,as if seeing China for the first time.
Paragraph 2:
After our presentation,Emma ad Jack came to me."That was eye-opening!We only knew
the ancient part,"Emma admitted.Jack apologized for his "too historical"comment and asked
to try the guzheng. From then on,we exchanged more than schoolwork-they taught me
British slang;I shared modern Chinese films.By term's end,our project won the class prize,
but what mattered more was the bridge we had built. That experience taught me that genuine
cultural exchange does not depend on proving ourselves, but on the humble willingness to
listen,learn,and embrace the unfamiliar.

M:Hey,Sarah! Are you planning to take the Digital Marketing course next semester?
W:I'm considering it.Given the current job market,it seems much more useful than the history

your career path,I'm often asked,"What should I major in to avoid being replaced by robots?"
It's a valid fear.Al is already outperforming humans in data analysis and even basic
programming. However, don't panic.Al is great at logic, but it lacks "the human touch".In the
future job market, the most valued skill won't be your ability to memorize facts or calculate
numbers.Instead,it will be your emotional intelligence-the ability to under stand, manage, and
influence emotions. While AI can process information,it cannot truly empathize with a client
or resolve a conflict between teammates with genuine feelings. My advice to you is not to
compete with machines in areas where they are stronger.Instead, hug technology and use AI as
a tool to free yourself from repetitive tasks. This will allow you to focus on more creative and
interpersonal work.Remember, the world will always need people who can think critically and
connect with others at a deep level. Finally,in this fast-changing era, your most powerful
weapon is lifelong learning.Never stop being a student, even after you graduate.
