The high tension and unforgiving demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an extremely strict physics lab. My teacher’s claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was multiplied at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a celebrated university.
The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my hopes fade away, and I broke like a rubber band (橡皮筋) stretched beyond its limit.
I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed (牺牲) her own career and life for my opportunities and poured out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. “This is your time,” she began, “eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurricular activities.” She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.”
“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued, “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier flipping burgers, so be it.”
Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.
Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power, I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms.
24. Why does the author mention her experiences in Paragraph 1?
A. To prove the difficulty of IB programs.
B. To highlight her great academic pressure.?
C. To show the necessity of a good university.
D. To complain about her strict teacher and father.
25. What does the underlined word “catalyst” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Cause. B. Symbol. C. Solution. D. Foundation.
26. What can we infer from the author’s rubber band metaphor?
A. Flexibility is her most valued quality.
B. Timely relaxation is essential to avoid breaking.
C. Constant stretching leads to better performance.
D. Success requires working under extreme pressure.
27. What gives the author the courage to “reach for the moon” without fear?
A. Her mastery of effective learning methods.
B. Her final acceptance of her academic talent.
C. Her mother’s unconditional love and support.
D. Her realization of the importance of a flexible schedule.

At any bus stop or in a queue, most people couldn’t help keeping their heads down, scrolling (滚屏) on their phones. But studies suggest that if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead, you may gain some surprising benefits.
We seem to do anything to avoid being alone with our thoughts. Social psychology professor Erin Westgate compares the common mindless scrolling to “brain candy” which offers temporary pleasure, yet is of little meaning. She adds that what is of real meaning is high-order thinking leading to human achievements.
Many people fear boredom, but this fear is often overstated. In a 2022 study conducted by Murayama, university students were asked to sit alone for 20 minutes with nothing to do but think. Though they had expected the wait to be unbearable, most ended up enjoying it far more than predicted — finding the empty time just as pleasant as scrolling on a phone would have made it. We badly underestimate how rewarding it can be to simply follow our own thoughts.
Mind-wandering is a distinct human gift that boosts learning. In one study, Vékony and her colleagues (2023) found that when learners’ minds wandered, their brains slipped into brief, sleep-like “offline” moments. In these quiet pauses, freshly learned material was strengthened and allowed to take root.
Mind-wandering is also key to problem-solving. People often find solutions better after unfocused thinking than intentional effort alone, especially during routine tasks like driving or showering. Even when people are not actively thinking, their brains remain active in a so-called default mode (默认模式), allowing ideas to connect in new ways. It’s especially helpful for complex problems.
Daydreaming boosts social and emotional connections too. A study found that imagining pleasant interactions with loved ones made people feel closer. Social daydreaming allows individuals to practice conversations, reflect on past interactions, and prepare for future social situations.
Murayama says he now tries to resist checking his phone during short waits and lets his thoughts wander. He finds that simply entertaining oneself mentally can be both satisfying and meaningful.
28. Why is mindless phone scrolling compared to “brain candy”?
A. It replaces higher-order thinking.
B. It does harm to the brain over time.
C. It pleases us instantly but lacks meaning.
D. It tastes sweet but is extremely hard to give up.
29. Why does the author mention the 2022 study?
A. To reveal the pleasure of daydreaming.
B. To show people fear boredom too much.
C. To highlight the limits of mindless scrolling.
D. To state that the fear of boredom is common.
30. What does Paragraph 5 imply about the “default mode”?
A. Unfocused thinking produces ideas. B. Intentional effort brings new ideas.
C. Complex tasks require active minds. D. Routines involve little brain activity.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Stay Focused in the Age of Smartphones.
B. Rediscover the Joy of Being Truly Alone.
C. Unlock the Power of Your Wandering Mind.
D. Uncover the Hidden Benefits of Social Daydreaming.

Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen (氧气). But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate (草酸钙). Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
32. What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A. They help turn CO2 into solids. B. They can absorb more CO2.
C. They can release oxygen quickly. D. They live in harmony with bacteria.
33. Why is the accurate data on CO2 transformation of the trees important?
A. To grow more trees in Kenya quickly.
B. To carry out more cooperative researches.
C. To keep the ecological balance and increase biodiversity.
D. To evaluate the global impact of the CO2 transformation.
34. What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A. The method of green development.
B. The role of nature in climate solutions.
C. The prospect of scientific approaches.
D. The seriousness of global climate change.
35. What does the passage tell us?
A. Kenyan trees are a natural carbon lock.
B. A defensive strategy in nature is found.
C. Tree planting is a key to ecological balance.
D. A recent advance in CO2 storage technology is achieved.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The Happy Person’s Retreat (退让) Principle
Many people regard giving in to conflicts as weakness or surrender. Yet psychologists put forward a meaningful concept: the Happy Person’s Retreat Principle. 36 It is a wise, rational and intelligent choice rather than timidity (怯懦).
The core logic behind this principle is easy to understand. People living stable, fulfilling lives have precious things to cherish: warm families, healthy bodies, steady careers and inner peace. 37 In contrast, those trapped in negative lives have little to lose, so they tend to argue fiercely over trivial things and risk everything to win a fight.
38 Imagine you encounter rude fight on the road. If you choose to fight back angrily, you may get caught in a fierce argument or even physical conflict. The momentary sense of victory will cost you your good mood, precious time and even personal safety. However, stepping back calmly helps you skip unnecessary trouble immediately.
This principle never means blind tolerance for all unfair treatment. 39 When your basic rights, personal safety or moral bottom line are seriously violated, you have every reason to defend yourself firmly. Retreat only works when the conflict is meaningless and brings no positive value to your life.
Learning to apply this psychological rule brings lasting benefits. It saves you from endless emotional consumption and keeps your inner world peaceful. 40 True happiness lies in guarding your own happy life instead of winning every meaningless dispute.
A. Here is a typical daily example to illustrate this principle clearly.
B. It finally allows you to focus energy on what truly matters to you.
C. Many people misunderstand the real meaning of personal happiness.
D. We should never give up our principles to avoid temporary conflicts.
E. Blind giving-in will only encourage others to treat you improperly.
F. It explains why happy people prefer to retreat from pointless conflicts.
G. Getting involved in quarrels will make them lose more valuable happiness.

I hated my father, who was very terrible to me, either for the money or his love. He was also the same even when I got into middle school. I had to walk home every day after school. The school is about two kilometers from home, but he never came to drive me home, not even in bad weather. If I moaned, he would say in his father-like voice, “That’s what your legs are for! Stop moaning and don’t be such a lazy kid!” I was always frightened to walk along the highway in the dark, feeling vulnerable and alone. It was a constant reminder of my father’s indifference towards me and it made me doubt whether he loved me at all.
Watching other fathers pick up and drop off children, I had both envy and hatred towards my father, and there was always a lump in my throat and I didn’t speak because I knew I would cry, but to face the reality, what can I change and how can I? Every day, I would embark on the journey home alone, carrying my heavy schoolbag on my shoulders. Along the way, there were unpredictable and dangerous bushes that lined the path. I felt there was something behind them all along. However, I never dared to imagine what was on earth behind the mysterious bushes and had no alternative but to go on and on. Despite the fear that seized me, whenever I reached the Chinese noodle house, a peculiar sense of relief would wash over me because it meant that I was almost home. Occasionally during rainy days, I ordered something there and sat by the window, observing the wind howling horribly and the rain pouring down, flapping against the trees.
Then came that unpredictable spring evening that would forever change my perspective. Exhausted from the long hours at school, I knew I had to make my way back home on foot again. With a heavy heart and an even heavier schoolbag, I trudged (步履艰难地走) along the familiar path. As I reached the section with the prominent (突出的) bushes, something caught my attention. A grey spot flickered (忽隐忽现) along the top of the bushes. It did provoke my curiosity, but still I chose to ignore it at first.
