The National Union for Debtors has agreed with Morehouse College to cancel up to $10 million in student debt. This will take great stress off nearly 3,000 Morehouse College graduates.
The Debt organization has taken the brave step of beginning to tell graduates that their student debts are now to zero. This unusual action lies in the ongoing student debts, especially on black students. Andrew Douglas, a political science professor at Morehouse College, caught hold of the opportunity to solve the problem, encouraged by Robert Smith, who paid off the debt of his entire graduating class in 2019.
For two and a half years, Douglas worked with the Debt organization, a trade union that supports debtors’ rights. Together, they developed a plan to cancel nearly $10 million in student debt. The effect of this move is huge, offering new economic freedom to graduates.
For example, Jarrell Billups, one of the 2,800 lucky students of this debt relief, no longer needs to pay Morehouse College over $15,000. Billups at first couldn’t believe the news, nearly hanging up the phone when told of the life-changing news.
This debt relief comes at a key time. The students were allowed to put off loan (贷款) repayments, but now the measure has been canceled. Graduates, who have been short of money, are now being asked to start repaying their loans.
The process of debt relief was pushed by an organization, where Morehouse College sold the debt to collectors for a little part of its original value, only for the Debt Collective to cancel it entirely. Importantly, this action doesn’t need any paperwork for those who graduated in fall 2022 or earlier, and some suitable accounts date back to the 1990s.
Douglas is determined to spread this way to help students at other colleges and hopes for increased government support to deal with the student debt problem.
4. What inspired Andrew Douglas to do the good action for the students?
A. A kind-hearted person. B. The wish of students in debt.
C. Black students in difficult situations. D. The difficulty graduates have in finding jobs.
5. Which saying matches this debt relief for students?
A. Out of debt, out of danger B. To offer firewood in snowy weather.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A good word is warm in three winters.
6. What does Douglas plan to do in the future?
A. Sell students’ debts to collectors. B. Provide free university education.
C. Call on officials to cancel debts. D. Benefit more college students in debt.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To argue that all colleges should sell their student debts to collectors.
B. To explain how students can apply for student loan repayment.
C To criticize the government for failing to solve the student debt problem.
D. To report on the student debt cancellation initiative at Morehouse College.
C
Do you have a suit or dress in the closet that you haven’t worn for years but are unwilling to get rid of? Maybe you say, “I can’t throw that away because I paid good money for it.” If you recognize this in yourself, then you are suffering from commitment to the sunk cost fallacy (谬论). It occurs when we feel that we have invested too much to quit. This psychological trap causes us to stick with a plan even if it no longer serves us and the costs clearly outweigh the benefits.
Arkes and Blumer conducted a survey revealing that people are influenced by sunk cost fallacy in their decisions. Participants were asked to imagine a situation where they accidentally booked two ski tickets for the same date, spending $100 on a ski trip to Michigan and $50 on Wisconsin. They were also told the latter would be more enjoyable. It turned out that 54% chose Michigan despite the reasonable choice being Wisconsin, because they had made a greater initial investment.
Sunk cost fallacy takes place when we let emotions cloud our decisions. Once we’ve invested in a choice, we feel guilt or regret if we don’t follow through, without realizing that past investments won’t be recovered. Instead, we base decisions on past costs, ignoring present and future costs and benefits. This may be due to loss aversion (厌恶), where people place more weight on losses than on gains. As a result, our decisions often aim to avoid losses instead of seeking the benefits gained if we let go of the past commitment.
No one can deny the fact that we benefit a lot from perseverance. So our society loves to emphasize perseverance. Never give up! Don’t waste! But only you know the right path for you. Sometimes walking away is the hardest choice of all. You might realize a path you’re on is no longer the right one or never was. That’s a painful realization.
8. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text?
A. People benefit from sticking with a plan.
B. People’s consumption view has changed.
C. People refuse to give up the past commitment.
D. People’s clothes are becoming more expensive.
9. Why did 54% of the participants choose the Michigan trip?
A. To appear more reasonable. B. To save more of the loss.
C. To make a greater investment. D. To enjoy more of themselves.
10. When does “sunk cost fallacy” occur?
A. When we don’t follow through our choices.
B. When we attach more importance to potential gains.
C. When we feel it worthwhile to invest in past decisions.
D. When we emotionally stick with investment already made.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward “perseverance”?
A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Disapproving. D. Indifferent.
D
Many people have participated in lots of virtual meetings these years. Some research shows this adjustment might not impact workplace productivity to any great degree. A new study, though, suggests otherwise.
In the study 602 participants were randomly paired and asked to come up with creative uses for a product. They were also randomly selected to work together either in person or virtually. The pairs were then ranked by assessing their total number of ideas, as well as those concepts’ degree of novelty, and asked to submit their best idea. Among the groups, virtual pairs came up with significantly fewer ideas, suggesting that something about face-to-face interaction generates more creative ideas. The findings could stiffen employers’ determination to urge or require their employees to come back to the office.
“We ran this experiment based on feedback from companies that it was harder to innovate with remote workers,” said lead researcher Melanie Brucks. “Unlike other forms of virtual communication, like phone calls or e-mail, videoconferencing copies the in-person experience quite well, so I was surprised when we found meaningful differences between in-person and video interactions for idea generation.”
When random objects were placed in both the virtual and physical rooms, the virtual pairs of participants spent more time looking directly at each other rather than letting their look wander about the room and taking in the entire scene. Eyeing one’s whole environment and noticing the random objects were associated with increased idea generation. On platforms, the screen occupies our interactions. Our look wavers less. “Looking away might come across as rude,” said Brucks, “so we have to look at the screen because that is the defined context of the interaction, the same way we wouldn’t walk to another room while talking to someone in person.”
Like most educators, Brucks has primarily taught in the past three years, and she did notice some advantages of the approach as well. Her students were more likely to take turns speaking and her shyer students spoke up more often, rid of the anxiety that comes from addressing a large classroom. Brucks found that one solution to improving virtual idea generation might be to simply turn off the camera, for her students felt “freer” and more creative when asked to do so. And this may be sound advice for the workplace.
Virtual teamwork can’t replace face-to-face. Idea selection proficiency (能力) is only valuable if you have strong options to select from, and face-to-face teams are the best means to generate winning options. Perhaps the workplace will find a compromise — a sweet spot in the middle that balances working from both home and office.
12. What does the underlined word “stiffen” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Shake. B. Revise. C. Challenge. D. Strengthen.
13. At first, lead researcher Melanie Brucks might think that ______.
A. creative ideas may emerge from casual thoughts
B. the feedback from companies seems questionable
C. participants should make eye contact in an online meeting
D. videoconferencing can’t compare with in-person communication
14. What can we learn about Brucks’ class?
A. Her students relieve anxiety by speaking up.
B. Her students progressed in focusing attention.
C. Her students benefited from virtual learning.
D. Her students displayed talent for public speaking.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Brainstorming Online Limits Creativity
B. Grouping Randomly Increases Productivity
C. Maintaining Teamwork Improves Idea Generation
D. Interacting Virtually Impacts Working Participation

My Favorite Music
My favorite music is “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion. It’s a classic pop song. This song was the theme song of the movie “Titanic”.
I love this song because it always makes me feel deeply touched. The beautiful melody and Celine Dion’s powerful and emotional singing bring out the essence of true love. Whenever I listen to it, it reminds me of the unforgettable love story in the movie. It also gives me the courage to face difficulties and makes me believe that love can overcome everything. It has a special meaning to me and will always be in my heart.
