第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
A
It’s important to remember humans aren’t the only ones who take amazing steps to protect nurture and raise their young. The animal kingdom is filled with moms that go the extra mile for their young. Here’s a look at three outstanding animal mothers.
African Elephant
Baby elephants can’t see well at first, so they heavily depend on their mothers and stick close to them for the first few months of their lives. Elephants form a matriarchal (母系的) society where just about every female takes part in raising the little ones. Elephant babies usually stay with their mothers for support and nutrition for up to two years, during which they are also taught to find food, collect water, and protect themselves.
Orangutan (猩猩)
Orangutan moms stand out in the mothering world thanks to two major elements of their parenting. First, they either build a new nest or head to an older one every single night. Not impressed yet? Consider the second unbelievable qualities of orangutan moms: Orangutan kids have the longest dependence period of any land-dwelling animal, and they will stay with their moms for up to seven years as mom teaches them how to find food and build nests. They even come back to “visit” for much longer than that to learn mothering skills themselves later on.
Polar Bears
A pregnant female creates a den in deep snow where she’ll give birth to cubs weighing just 1.5 pounds—while she herself hasn’t eaten for months. For up to eight months, she’ll nurse these weak cubs using only her fat reserves, losing up to 43% of her body weight in the process. Once they come out of the den, polar bear mothers become protectors, willing to fight even larger male bears that pose a threat to their cubs. They’ll spend 2.5 years or so teaching their young essential survival skills for Arctic life
1. How do elephant mothers help their young?
A. By instructing them on parenting skills B. By teaching them to find food and water.
C. By protecting them for only a few days. D. By leaving them in the wild uncared for.
2. What is special about the Orangutan kids?
A. They have poor sight at first. B. They like living in the old nests.
C. They have a close bond with their mother. D. They can live without eating for months
3. How long will the polar bears learn to survive from their mother?
A. For a few months B. For less than 2 year C. For more than 7 years. D. For about 2.5 years.
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. D

Located in the rolling hills and endless stretches of farmland just beyond the village of Millbrook lies a peaceful habitat for more than 80 species of wildlife from around the world. Truly one of a kind, the Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School is the only zoo in the nation accredited (认证) by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and run by a high school. This is where Alan Tousignant began his career in zoology and conservation (保护).
Tousignant was ready to study biology and apply to a program for veterinarians (兽医), but he didn’t live up to the requirement of mathematics and had to give up that dream. During a fieldwork experience, however, he learned about an opening for an internship (实习) at the Millbrook School’s Trevor Zoo. His work at the zoo has caused him to develop a lifelong interest and career in exhibiting non-native animals and working with others in the field of conservation.
The Trevor Zoo, established in 1936, is small compared to many well-known zoos. As a consequence, Tousignant says, “We all wear a lot of hats.” But the wide range of tasks on the job is exactly what’s kept him around for all these years. The role of organizer — helping to shape the big-picture purposes and goals for the zoo — comes easily to Tousignant, but he says he appreciates the hands-on time he spends working with the animals and designing exhibits.
Working with students and observing the impact of the zoo program on their early learning experiences has been inspiring to Tousignant, who says the value of an on-campus zoo creates many opportunities to catch students’ imaginations and stimulate their curiosity about science and conservation.
One living, breathing example is Millbrook alumnus (校友), Thomas Lovejoy, PhD, today a senior expert and a professor of environmental science and policy at George Mason University in Virginia. Lovejoy’s experience working at the Trevor Zoo during high school inspired a lifelong career devoted to conservation.
4. What is special about the Trevor Zoo among AZA-accredited zoos?
A. It has multiple wildlife species.
B. It belongs to a private organization.
C. It lies in the center of Millbrook.
D. It is operated by a high school.
5. What led to Tousignant’s career interest?
A. Animal research. B. Zoo internship. C. Math requirement. D. Biology study.
6. What does the underlined phrase “wear a lot of hats” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Take on various roles. B. Make the most of strengths.
C. Work with many partners. D. Have a large collection of hats.
7. Why is Thomas Lovejoy mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To attract more students to visit zoos.
B. To prove the popularity of conservation.
C. To introduce a famous university professor.
D. To show the Trevor Zoo’s influence on students.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. D

Our bodies weren’t made to sit for hours in a classroom. That may be why many kids struggle to stay focused in school, often losing track of lessons. High-intensity (高强度) break exercises can help students focus better. Just a few minutes of activity improves brain function and learning, new research shows, offering a simple solution for classroom problems.
Eric Drollette wondered how little exercise was needed to improve focus. He’s an exercise expert at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He led a team that designed a nine-minute, high-intensity break exercise program that could be done in a classroom without extra equipment. It uses short periods of heart-beating activity with short breaks in between. For example, high knees, star jumps, jumping jacks, hops and kicks. They described it in Psychology of Sport and Exercise, a leading academic journal.
Twenty-five students aged 9 to 12 tried out the program. At Drollette’s lab, they wore a heart rate monitor (监测器) and an EEG hat that recorded brain activity in real time. Then they did the high-intensity break exercises, rode an exercise bike or watched a short video. After each activity, participants did some tests. One test showed five fish in a line on a screen, and kids had to note which direction the center fish faced. Other tests focused on math or language skills.
During the fish test, the team noticed a change in what Drollette calls “the uh-oh mechanism” — when you realize you made a mistake. High-intensity exercise reduced that response, suggesting that exercise had made kids’ brains more efficient at processing information. Students also performed better on the language tests after the high-intensity workout. But they did a little worse at math. That could be from tiredness, which tends to affect higher-level thinking tasks, Drollette says.
Being active can help with both mental and physical health, says Drollette. His recommendation: “Find opportunities to stand up and get moving, even for a few minutes, to keep your brain sharp and your body healthy.”
8. What is the nine-minute program designed for?
A. Helping students get better at focusing.
B. Training students’ physical strength.
C. Making students more active in sports.
D. Assisting students to relax after class.
9. What were the 25 students required to do in Drollette’s lab?
A. They only did high-intensity exercise.
B. They wore equipment to record brain activity.
C. They did tests before doing any activity.
D. They watched videos for a long time.
10. What effect did high-intensity break exercise have on students?
A. It made students better at math. B. It reduced students’ tiredness.
C. It improved students’ language tests. D. It made students’ brains slower.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Short Breaks: A Cure for Students’ Tiredness

Computers have become amazingly exact at translating spoken words to text messages and searching a large supply of valuable information for answers to difficult questions. At least, that is, so long as you speak English or other world's main languages. But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.
American tech giants don't have a long history of making their language technology work well outside the wealthiest markets, a problem that has also made it harder for them to discover dangerous misinformation on their platforms. Google, for instance, upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. Part of the reason is that there's just not enough online data in those languages for the Al systems to effectively learn how to get better at understanding them.
“We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your language, it will be like it never existed,” said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his Al research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. “Considering our history, some of the bias (偏见) is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized (殖民化的) countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way,” Marivate added.
However, Google and Microsoft are among the companies that say they are trying to improve technology for so-called "low-resource" languages that Al systems don't have enough data for. Computer scientists at Meta announced a breakthrough on the path to a "universal translator" that could translate multiple languages at once and work better with lower-resourced languages. Meanwhile, Marivate and other researchers have founded a research project across Africa. Increasingly, people are joining hands to develop a variety of language approaches.
12. What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
A. Yoruba and Igbo are widely spoken in the world.
B. English speakers fail to access online information.
C. The online data of African languages is limited.
D. Computers can translate all text messages exactly.
13. Why does the author mention “Google” in Paragraph 2?
A. To make a prediction. B. To draw a comparison.
C. To reach a conclusion. D. To give an example.
14. What is Marivate's attitude towards “American tech giants”?
A. Friendly. B. Unconcerned. C. Dissatisfied. D. Proud.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Joint Efforts to Improve AI in African Languages B. Computers Good at Translating Spoken Language
C. US Tech Giants Misunderstand African Languages D. African Researchers Exchange Ideas with Tech Giants
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. A

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Google, for instance, upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. (例如,谷歌的语言应用程序把一个善良的非洲神误译为魔鬼,这让约鲁巴社区的成员感到不安。)”可推断,作者在第二段提到“谷歌”是给出一个具体的例子。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“"We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your language, it will be like it never existed," said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his AI research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. "Considering our history, some of the bias is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way," Marivate added.

It was a typical busy noon at the downtown fast-food spot. The smell of sizzling patties and crispy fries lingered (弥漫) in the air, and the place was packed with folks rushing to grab a quick meal. I’d just gotten off a long morning at work, and my stomach was empty as I finally reached the front of the line and got my order-a burger, fries, and a cold drink.
As I set the tray (托盘) down on a small table by the window, I glanced over and saw two firefighters in the corner. Their uniforms were heavy with faint spots, like they’d just stepped away from a smoky scene, and their boots still held a hint of damp from the morning dew. They stood in the back of the line, shoulders relaxed but eyes tired.
I was just about to pick up my burger-the cheese melted perfectly-when a loud, sharp siren (警报) cut through the noise of the restaurant. The two firefighters froze for half a second, and then moved. No hesitation, no exchange of words — just muscle memory. One grabbed his helmet off the nearby counter, the other adjusted his radio on his shoulder, and they turned toward the door, their steps quickening. I watched them go, and my fork paused mid-air.
My empty stomach served as a quiet reminder of how long I’d waited for this meal. I’d stood in that line for 15 minutes, my feet aching from the morning’s work. Giving them my lunch meant I would have to wait again-maybe another line, maybe my break slipping away faster. I bit my lip, staring at the tray. Then I thought of their uniforms, the spots, the way they’d act upon hearing the siren like it was a call they couldn’t ignore. They didn’t get to pause for a meal when emergencies hit. They’d probably go hours without eating, running from one call to the next.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My hesitation melted away.

I went back to the counter, only to find the manager was waiting for me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 My hesitation melted away. I grabbed the tray and hurried after the two firefighters, calling out softly, “Excuse me!” They paused at the door, turning with slight surprise. I held out the tray, smiling, “You guys must be in a rush — take this. It’s not much, but it’ll keep you going.” One of them hesitated for a second, then nodded gratefully, taking the tray. “Thank you, really,” he said, before they rushed out into the street, the siren growing louder as they went. I stood there for a moment, my stomach still growling, but my chest felt light.
I went back to the counter, only to find the manager was waiting for me. He smiled warmly, holding up a new tray with a burger, fries, and a drink. “Saw what you did for the firefighters,” he said, handing it over. “This one’s on the house. We need more people like you.” I was shocked, then grateful, taking the tray. “Thank you so much,” I replied. As I sat back down by the window, biting into the burger, the taste felt sweeter than before. Sometimes, giving up a small thing didn’t just help others — it filled your own heart, too.

B

C. It lies in the center of Millbrook.
D. It is operated by a high school.

B. High-Intensity Break Exercises: A Way to Improve Math
C. Short Breaks: A Solution to Building Health
D. High-Intensity Break Exercises: An Aid for Students’ Focus
D

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My hesitation melted away.
