What does a typical (典型的) day look like for a high school student in the United States? Well, everyone is very different. I can describe my normal day in high school for you.
Our school day usually went from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. However, some days I had cheerleading practice (啦啦队训练) or drama practice at 6:30 a.m. If I had cheerleading practice, I ate breakfast at the school dining hall.
Then I would go towards my locker to get my books for the first period. Each class went for about 50 minutes and we had 4 minutes to get to the next class. We studied everything from science and math to Spanish and PE.
I played the flute (长笛) in a band, so one of my class periods was used for that. Lunchtime would be at 12:30 p.m. and then we had some time to hang out outside. At the end of the day, there was a seminar (研讨会) period. It could be used for studying or meetings.
After school, I would cheer at a basketball game, be a lifeguard (救生员) at work or have speech practice.
My family always tried to have dinner together at around 7 p.m., but there was always no time. I would finally start studying at around 8 or 9 p.m.

Bob likes climbing very much. However, there wasn’t a climbing club in his school at first, so he felt sad.
At the beginning of the second year of middle school, his school offered rock climbing lessons in order to encourage students to exercise. He was so happy that he joined at once.
In the first lesson, the coach said, “Rock climbing needs strength, speed, courage and persistence (坚持). All these are necessary.” But in Bob’s opinion, rock climbing was just a fun activity. It interested him.
During the following classes, the coach asked the students to run 1,000 metres first, and then climb with a rope. When Bob finished running, he almost lost his breath (呼吸) and got bored, and he did not even want to touch the rope. He thought it was less interesting than before. The coach noticed that and asked him, “Why do you want to take rock climbing lessons?” “I come for fun, of course.” “Is that fun?” he asked. Bob shook his head slowly. The coach then explained patiently, “That’s because you stop halfway. You know beautiful sights are always on the top.”
After hearing his words, Bob made up his mind to finish his journey. When he got to the top in the end, he felt really excited.
Sometimes it’s hard to reach the top of the mountain, but it’s a pity to stop halfway, so don’t give up.

Do you find that your dinners with your parents are less happy than before? Do you find it easier to chat in the past but now it’s difficult? Do you and your parents often disagree on things? You’re not alone. Many kids and their parents have such experiences.
When you’re growing up, your body changes a lot. You might worry about getting taller or heavier than your friends. When you feel worried, you might get angry at your parents sometimes.
It’s also hard to balance your feelings as you grow up. You get to a strange time called middle ground—no longer a small child but not quite an adult (成人). You want to do things by yourself more, but you still need your parents’ love and help. You want to make decisions by yourself, but your parents might not always agree. This can make you feel sad.
But don’t worry too much about arguments with your parents. The most important thing is to talk to them. Tell them how you feel, even if it’s hard. They might not agree with you right away, but if you keep talking and listening, you can find a way to make things better.
Remember, your parents love you and want to help you. Sometimes they forget how hard it is to grow up. But if you keep talking to them and trying to understand them, you can work things out. So keep trying, and you’ll find that you and your parents can get along just fine.
9. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions.
C. By listing some facts. D. By describing a picture.
10. What does “middle ground” mean in the third paragraph?
A. Between being a child and an adult. B. Being a little kid.
C. Being an adult. D. Being an old person.
11. What does the underlined word “This” refer to?
A. Being not easy to make your own decisions.
B. Always following parents’ advice at home.
C. Having no time to talk or play with parents.
D. Failing to balance homework and hobbies.
12. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To ask children to become more hard-working.
B. To describe the change of looks of the teenagers.
C. To show that teenagers have problems with their parents.
D. To give advice on how to get along better with parents.
(D)
A reader wrote to say that she was feeling lonely at break (休息) because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her — and to all the kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when our best friend isn’t around — maybe because she moved to a different class or a different school. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make it? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
You can start by looking around your classroom — think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hello to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (欣赏) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to the kids you want to play with.
If you have trouble doing this or if you feel shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, and offer to help — and soon you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before. You can introduce him or her to your new friends!
13. This text is written for ________.
A. teachers B. parents C. students D. visitors
14. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The ways to make friends. B. The reasons to make friends.
C. The places to make friends. D. The time to make friends.
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. All kids are feeling lonely.
B. It is easy for kids to make new friends.
C. Teachers are shy and have trouble making friends.
D. If you are a friend, you can make friends.
16. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. We can forget our old friends. B. We can share our best friends.
C. We can write to our best friends. D. We can love our best friends.

Has a person ever warmly held a door open for you? How do you feel after playing with friends? And what would you say is your favourite family memory? These questions have one thing in common; they’re all about connecting with people. “Let’s Connect” is the theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week. It improves mental health by building healthy social connections.
Humans naturally connect with others, whether that’s family, friends or people in our community. Healthy connections give people energy and support—we all need people to celebrate and share our worries with. Social connections aren’t just about mental health; they improve physical health, too, helping us to live a long life.
Then how to connect with others? “You can reach out and connect with people in so many different ways,” says Julia Clements, the organizer behind Children’s Mental Health Week. You can connect in person or online, with your friends, parents, teachers or classmates. It’s not just people either. “Some people feel connected with their pets or in nature,” says Clements. She agrees talking to others can be helpful to a lonely person. She advises making time to build more connections through actions as well as words.
Everybody may feel lonely sometimes and refuse to talk to others. “Remember that there are always people that care for you,” advises Clements. She says it’s important to tell someone you trust about how you are feeling, or safe organizations such as Helpline or Shout. They can really help.
41. What do the three questions in the beginning have in common?

With hard work, I have made great progress. Now, I can remember words more easily and use grammar correctly. I also become more confident in speaking English. Facing challenges makes me stronger and better. It helps me grow both in study and in life.
