A
Traci Ruble, a psychotherapist(心理治疗师), felt worried that people were experiencing loneliness and a shortage of personal connections. She understood that with busy lives and challenging jobs, people were unable to make these connections.
So on a spring day in 2015, Ruble and a small number of volunteers set up chairs on sidewalks in 12 locations around San Francisco, California, and invited people passing by to sit down, talk for a few minutes and chat(聊天). This was the beginning of Sidewalk Talk, an organization whose mission is to create public spaces of connection where people are.
Today, the organization has more than 4,000 volunteers in 40 cities. Around 25 percent of the volunteers are licensed therapists(持证治疗师). They come from different backgrounds and are a mixed group. Volunteers receive training from the organization.
Listening activities are held several times a month along with other organizations. In San Francisco, Sidewalk Talk partners with Lava Mae, a non-governmental organization(NGO) that brings mobile showers to homeless people.
Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to speak and be listened to,but it is not therapy, according to Ruble. “I’m not interacting as a therapist out there,” she said. “I’m not there to solve someone’s problems,” she said. “I’m there to practice being human.”
Ruble stressed that therapy is not one-sided and that therapists can practice self-disclosure(自我表露) by “being human”; she is taught to interact by sharing her own life and showing empathy(同感) to the people she talks with.
According to a report, 31 percent of all Americans experience serious loneliness, including 61 percent of young adults. To fix that, building community relationships is very important. While listening activities will not solve the loneliness problem, these chats could help someone have a brighter day. Knowing that there are empathetic people who are willing to fully listen and share your feelings can make all the difference to a lonely person.

(2024·江苏常州期末)Here’s an all-too-familiar situation: You excitedly packed for your beach trip. Luckily, you remembered all the necessities: socks, a phone charger and your passport, etc. But upon arrival, you realized you forgot to bring your toothbrush. In a new study, researchers suggest offloading important to-do items—for example, by setting reminders on your phone—could clear brain space to better remember the little things.
To prove this, the researchers developed a memory task to be played on a touchscreen computer. The test was undertaken by 158 volunteers aged between 18 and 71. They were shown 12 numbered circles on the screen, and had to remember to drag some of these to the left and some to the right. The number of circles that they remembered to drag to the correct side determined their rewards at the end of the experiment. One side was “high value”, meaning that remembering to drag a circle to this side was worth 10 times as much money as remembering to drag a circle to the other “low value” side.
Volunteers had to use their own memory to remember the task for half of the trials and they were allowed to set reminders on the external digital devices for the other half.
The researchers found that volunteers tended to use the digital devices to store details of the high-value circles. And, when they did so, their memory for those circles was improved by 18%. “What was unexpected was that their memory for low-value circles was also improved by 27%, even in those who had never set any reminders for low-value circles,” said Gilbert.
However, results also showed a potential cost to using reminders. Without reminders, the volunteers remembered the low-value circles better than the high-value ones. “Far from causing digital dementia(痴呆), using a memory device can even improve our memory for information that we never saved. But we need to be careful that we back up the most important information,” Gilbert said.
5.The situation in Paragraph 1 is described to show that .
A.our memory is incorrect sometimes
B.our memory has a certain preference
C.our memory has an order of importance
D.our memory is likely to weaken over time
6.What can we learn about the experiment?
A.Volunteers’ performance was connected with their ages.
B.Volunteers tended to set reminders for low-value circles.
C.Volunteers were not allowed to use devices in the experiment.
D.Dragging high-value circles to the correct side would win more awards.
7.What surprised the researchers?
A.Digital devices did harm to the brain when used improperly.
B.Volunteers tended to remember low-value information better.
C.Volunteers’ memory for low-value content was improved too.
D.Volunteers tended to use digital devices for high-value information.
8.What can be a suitable title for the text?

Ultimately,Li came of age.He thought it was time to shift the heavy burden from his mother to himself.Actually,a plan arose in his mind—he wanted to be a delivery driver. But Li knew very well that his family couldn’t afford a truck,so he had to bury his dream deep inside. But his mother sensed that. Therefore, his mother secretly made a big decision!
On Li’s 20th birthday, his mother gave him a gift he had always been longing for—a pickup truck. It was truly a surprise to Li! His eyes glued to the very truck, his tears swirling in his eyes,he could imagine the scene in which his mother raised money everywhere to get him the gift!
根据第二段“invited people passing by to sit down, talk for a few minutes and chat. This was the beginning of Sidewalk Talk, an organization whose mission is to create public spaces of connection where people are.” A、C、D选项错误。
根据第五段Ruble的表述“I’m not there to solve someone’s problems”及第六段“sharing her own life and showing empathy to the people she talks with”可知,“being human”通过分享和同理心促进互动,使聊天更顺利。
故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“So on a spring day in 2015, Ruble and a small number of volunteers set up chairs on sidewalks in 12 locations around San Francisco, California, and invited people passing by to sit down, talk for a few minutes and chat. This was the beginning of Sidewalk Talk, an organization whose mission is to create public spaces of connection where people are.(因此,在2015年春天的一天,Ruble和少数志愿者在加利福尼亚州旧金山周围的12个地点的人行道上摆了椅子,并邀请路过的人坐几分钟聊天。这是Sidewalk Talk的开始,该组织的使命是在人们所在的地方创造具有联系的公共空间。)”和第五段中的“Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to speak and be listened to, but it is not therapy, according to Ruble.(Ruble认为,Sidewalk Talk给了人们一个说话和被倾听的机会,但这不是治疗。)” 故选A。
根据第一段中的“You excitedly packed for your beach trip. Luckily, you remembered all the necessities...But upon arrival, you realized you forgot to bring your toothbrush...the little things.”
根据第二段中的“One side was ‘high value’, meaning that remembering to drag a circle to this side was worth 10 times as much money as remembering to drag a circle to the other ‘low value’ side.”
根据第四段中的“What was unexpected was that their memory for low-value circles was also improved by 27%, even in those who had never set any reminders for low-value circles”可知,志愿者对低价值内容的记忆的提高使研究人员感到惊讶。
通读全文,并结合第一段中的“by setting reminders on your phone—could clear brain space to better remember the little things”可知,使用数字设备提醒可以帮助人们提高记忆,所以D选项是最佳标题。
