①The Taklimakan Desert is the largest desert in China. It is about 337,600 k㎡ in the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang. The dry environment makes it difficult for life there. Sandstorms often happen, and the moving sand seriously influences the lives of local people and the natural environment in this area. However, the Chinese government and people have been making great efforts to control the desert. Here are some scientific and effective ways they have used.
②One of the main ways is to build a tree belt around the desert. By the end of 2023, a 2,761-kilometre-long green belt had already been built around it. In 2024, the last part of the belt, 285 kilometres, was finished. It’s about 3, 046 kilometres in total. The belt acts as a strong wall against the spread of the desert.
③Biological ways are also widely used. For example, people grow special plants that can grow well with little water, like huyang, suosuo and so on. These plants hold the sand and reduce sandstorms. At the same time, they can also bring certain economic benefits to local people.
④Also, people build greenhouses to grow fruit and vegetables. In this way, they can make full use of the land in the desert area.
⑤Great changes have already taken place. The natural environment around the desert has improved greatly. The local economy has also developed quickly. People in our village lived by planting fruit trees when I was very young. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because we were short of water there.

Do you know when restaurants were invented? The first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece (希腊) and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. Everyone shared the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn’t have to store food at home if they ate their meals at these restaurants.
Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the big street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn’t have to eat everyone else’s food.
For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food in the street or at inns (小旅馆). Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to restaurants we know today. There was a wider choice of food, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, trains made travel much faster and simpler. In the end, this kind of restaurant began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.
Now, restaurants are everywhere. You can buy different kinds of food. You can get food sent to your door. But remember it wasn’t always like that.

The Belt and Road: Linking the Whole World
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was put forward by China in 2013. Over the past 13 years, great changes have taken place across more than 150 countries and 30 international organizations that take part in this project. People used to face many difficulties in cross-border trade and transport, but now everything has become much easier.
Years ago, it used to take weeks to send goods from China to European countries by sea or land. Many small businessmen dared not do foreign business because of high transport costs and slow delivery. But now, modern railways, highways and ports built under BRI connect Asia, Europe and Africa closely. The China-Europe freight trains are the most popular transport choice. A train only takes about 14 days to run from Yiwu to Spain, cutting more than half of the old transport time.
Besides convenient transport, BRI also helps people share technology and culture. China has built hospitals, schools and water factories in many developing countries. Local people used to lack medical care and good education, but now thousands of kids can receive free lessons, and sick villagers can get timely treatment. Farmers from different lands exchange planting skills online, making more kinds of fruits and vegetables available all year round.
What’s more, the win-win cooperation brings richer jobs for local people. Factories built with Chinese investment offer lots of work chances. Instead of only selling cheap raw materials, developing countries can now process products locally and make higher profits. The Belt and Road does not belong to one single country. It proves that all nations can develop better hand in hand through equal communication and mutual help.

A.In 2000. B.In 2013. C.In 2018. D.In 2025.
2.How long does a China-Europe freight train take from Yiwu to Spain now?

A.Goods can only be sent by sea now.
B.Transport time has been greatly shortened.
C.All trains can carry passengers instead of goods.
D.Transport costs become much higher than before.
4.What help does BRI offer to developing countries according to the text?
A.Only large shopping malls are built.
B.Hospitals, schools and water projects are constructed.
C.All local people can travel to China for free.
D.It stops all cross-border farm trade.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.China only makes money from foreign countries via BRI.
B.The Belt and Road brings convenient transport and shared development worldwide.

D.Developing countries fully depend on China’s help.

People in our village lived by planting fruit trees when I was very young. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because we were short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learnt about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (水渠) and other projects began to be built in my village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Shortly after, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

A.About 14 days. B.About one month. C.Two weeks more than before. D.Over one month.
3.Which of the following is the change of transport brought by BRI?
C.Freight trains are the only useful product of the Belt and Road.
D.Developing countries fully depend on China’s help.
