Passage 2
Washing clothes is easy for most people living in cities, as washing machines do the job. However, in some rural areas, people have to wash their clothes by hand, as they don’t have enough money to buy a washing machine. Now, a new bamboo washing machine might help solve this problem.
The machine is a simpler version (版本) of a traditional washing machine. However, it uses the natural flow (流动) of water instead of electricity. It has a wooden rotation shaft (木质转轴) in the centre and a bamboo drum outside. You just put the machine in a river and water will go into the bottom of the machine and make the main drum turn. This makes an eddy (涡流) that cleans clothes.
A team from Dalian Minzu University made the machine. Because of this, they won the “Best of the Best” prize at the 2020 Red Dot Design Award.
Yu Yue, one of these students, said that the best thing about the machine is that it’s cheap and easy to make. “We give people the rotation shaft and teach them how to set up the machine. They can find bamboo and make it into drums. If there is no bamboo, they can also use materials like wood.”
The team spent more than half a year working on the machine. They had many team meetings to change the machine at least four times. And in the end, they were happy with the results.

Passage 3
In the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period, Lu Ban, the ancestor (祖先) of Chinese builders and carpenters (木匠), was once climbing a mountain by holding the trees and grass nearby. Suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his finger. He looked down and found that he was cut by the leaf of a kind of wild grass.
When he pulled off the leaf, he found that it had sharp teeth on the edge. An idea hit him. He ran home and started to try out his idea.
Luckily, after many experiments, he finally invented the saw, which is still in use now. If Lu Ban had not been curious about the leaves of this wild grass, there would have been no saw at that time. Lu Ban was curious about everything around him. He always tried to turn his ideas into reality.
One day, Lu Ban was taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful view. Suddenly it began to rain. He was wet all over. Lu Ban said to himself, “If there is something that can protect people from the rain, it will be wonderful.”
Another day, he saw some kids playing in the rain, and each kid held a big lotus leaf (荷叶) over the head to protect themselves from getting wet. That gave him a great idea. Passage 4
The Power of Curiosity
Curiosity is the engine of human progress. Throughout history, curious minds have changed the world with their discoveries and inventions.
Benjamin Franklin was deeply curious about electricity. One stormy day, he flew a kite with a metal key attached to the string during a thunderstorm. He wanted to prove that lightning was a form of electricity. This dangerous experiment led him to invent the lightning rod, which protects buildings from lightning strikes.
In ancient China, Wan Hu showed great courage and curiosity about space. He built a “flying chair” with 47 rockets attached. Despite the great risk, he sat in the chair and asked his servants to light the rockets. The explosion took his life, but his spirit of exploration inspired future generations.
Zhang Heng, another famous Chinese scientist, was curious about the earth and the sky. He drew the first star map of China and invented the seismoscope (地动仪) to detect earthquakes. His inventions showed that curiosity could lead to practical tools that help people.
Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists, once said, “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” These great minds all shared one thing—they never stopped asking “why”.

Passage 6
Marie Curie is famous for her discovery of radium and polonium. But where did her passion for science come from? It came from her deep curiosity about the natural world. As a child, Marie was fascinated by the way things worked. She often asked her father, a physics teacher, questions about the stars, the elements, and the universe. Her curiosity didn’t disappear when she became a scientist. Instead, it grew stronger. She spent years working in a laboratory, often in difficult conditions, to understand the mysterious properties of radioactive materials. Her curiosity also made her brave. She took risks by handling dangerous materials without knowing their full effects. Her work led to two Nobel Prizes, but she never stopped being curious. Even near the end of her life, she was still asking questions. Marie Curie proved that curiosity is not just for young people — it is a lifelong quality that can lead to amazing discoveries.
22.What was Marie Curie’s passion driven by?
A.Money and fame. B.Deep curiosity about the natural world.
C.Pressure from her family. D.A desire to travel.
23.Where did Marie’s interest in science come from?
A.Her school. B.Her father, a physics teacher.
C.Her friends. D.A book she read.
24.How did Marie’s curiosity change as she grew older?
A.It disappeared. B.It grew stronger.
C.It became weaker. D.It stayed the same.
25.What risk did Marie take in her work?
A.She traveled to other countries. B.She handled dangerous radioactive materials.
C.She worked in a modern lab. D.She used new equipment.
26.What can we learn from Marie Curie’s story?
A.Curiosity is only for children. B.Curiosity can lead to lifelong discoveries.
C.Scientists should avoid risks. D.Fame is the only goal of science.
Passage 7
When Jane was a child, she was always asking questions. She asked her parents why the sky was blue and why birds could fly. She was especially curious about insects. She spent hours in her backyard watching ants and beetles. Her parents thought she would grow out of it, but her curiosity only grew stronger. When she went to college, she studied biology. She focused on entomology, the study of insects. During her research, she discovered a new species of beetle in a rainforest. She also found that this beetle could produce a chemical that might be used in new medicines. Jane’s curiosity had led her to a significant discovery. She now encourages young students to follow their curiosity. She says, “Curiosity is the seed of discovery. If you stay curious, you will always find something amazing.”
