Nick Vujicic was born in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia. Unlike most babies, Nick came into the world without arms or legs. Doctors could not explain why this happened, and his parents were shocked at first. But they decided to raise him with love and treat him like any other child.
Growing up was not easy for Nick. He struggled to do simple things that others took for granted, like dressing himself or brushing his teeth. At school, some children laughed at him and called him names. Nick felt deeply lonely and angry. When he was ten, he even tried to end his life by drowning himself in the bathtub. Thankfully, he did not succeed.
A turning point came when Nick was thirteen. His mother showed him a newspaper article about a man who had achieved great things despite his disability. “Nick,” she said, “you can either be angry at the world for what you don’t have, or be thankful for what you do have. The choice is yours.”
Those words changed Nick’s life. He began to focus on his abilities rather than his disabilities. He learnt to swim, fish, and even surf. He worked hard at school and went to university, where he earned a degree in Accounting and Financial Planning.
Today, Nick Vujicic is a famous motivational speaker. He has travelled to over 60 countries, sharing his story with millions of people. He tells them that attitude is the most important thing in life. “If I can dream it, I can do it,” he often says. “The only limits in life are the ones you set yourself.”
Nick is now married and has four children. He has written several books and continues to inspire people around the world. His life proves that our circumstances do not define us—our choices do.

① Do you know E-person and I-person? These two kinds of personalities are much discussed online. Even twins may be quite different from each other, such as personalities, hobbies, friends and so on. To learn more about that, let’s hear from the following twins.
② Andy, an Extrovert
I enjoy trying new things and playing with many friends. Ken and I head to the beach on Saturdays to surf, and on Sundays, I hang out with Tom, eating and riding. At school, Larry is my best friend. I value (重视) his friendship a lot because Larry cares about me and often gives great advice about my problems.
③ Anna, an Introvert
I think nothing is more enjoyable than staying on the sofa by myself with a great book in hand. However, I do also need time with my two best friends, Sue and Tina. Sue is so full of life that her jokes bring much joy to my quiet days. Tina is more like me, and she understands me better than I do. We often take a long walk to share our feelings. I love both my friends and need their different personalities to make my life colorful.

S, M, P and C stand for different people who have different personalities (个性). S people are the most popular at the party. They are friendly, energetic (精力充沛的) and humorous (幽默的). They are interested in anything new and exciting and others always have fun with them. At the same time, they are careless and forgetful (健忘的). M people are very careful and do everything as planned. They always want to find faults and never feel pleased with anything around them. They are strict (严格的) with themselves, as well as with others. M people are real friends. If they make friends with you, it means that they will be your friends for life. They will do anything for their friends at any time. P people can easily be satisfied (满足的). They are peaceful (平静的) and calm (冷静的). But being peaceful and calm makes them very dull (迟钝的). They are always bystanders (旁观者). P people are good listeners and are always ready to accept others’ opinions. C people are leaders and workaholics (工作狂). They are brave and are never afraid of taking risks. However, they don’t care about others’ opinions and seldom think of others. They want others to follow them, but they hate waiting for others.

A Brave Young Hero
On a freezing December day in Tongxin County, Ningxia, the quiet winter air was suddenly cut through by loud screams—a 4-year-old boy had fallen through the ice into the cold lake! People ran quickly to the lakeside, feeling worried and nervous, but nobody dared (敢) to step onto the thin, cracking (易碎的) ice.
At that dangerous moment, 13-year-old Li Jiating, a seventh-grade student, stood up bravely. “I’m thin and light—I’ll go!” she said. She took a long pipe from a person nearby and crawled (爬行) slowly and carefully toward the hole in the ice. Just as she stretched (伸出) out her hand to pass the pipe to the boy, the ice broke again. Both she and the boy were in the icy water.
But Li Jiating didn’t let go of the pipe. She held it tightly until some adults on the shore pulled her out. Soon after, firefighters arrived and saved the boy. Wet from head to toe and shaking with cold, Li Jiating rode her bike home quietly without telling anyone what had happened.
When her father asked about her wet clothes, she smiled and made up a story: “A water truck splashed (泼洒) me with water!” It was not until 11 o’clock that night, when his sister called him, that the father found out the truth. “I felt scared and sad, but I was also proud of her kindness,” he said.
The boy’s parents were very thankful. They posted online messages to find the “unknown hero” and then visited Li Jiating with gifts and money. Although Li Jiating refused to take the money, they left some fruits and a sheep. “This is our sincere thanks,” the boy’s father said.
Li Jiating got a lot of honors (荣誉) for what she did. Her school named her “A Good Youth with Courage and Kindness”. The county (县) government gave her a prize, and a hospital offered her free physical exams for life. Alibaba also gave her a 5,000-yuan award.
Li Jiating’s story is like a beam (束) of warm light. We praise her for her kindness and bravery (勇敢), but we also need to teach young people to keep themselves safe when they try to help others.
When Su Bingtian was a young athlete, many people doubted his potential. He was not the tallest or the strongest. But he had a burning desire to succeed. In 2006, he began his sporting life.
