Passage 1
When I first started working with Kevin Sargeant, he was a freshman in high school, and I was his science teacher. I knew even then that he was a bright young man with great potential, and a hunger for learning. But he struggled to apply what he had learned due to his autism (自闭症).
Diagnosed (诊断) with Asperger’s syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症) in elementary school, Kevin scored well on tests. However, a huge part of school learning takes place not at a student’s individual desk, but in groups that require participation. For children like Kevin, that presents a big challenge.
For a long time, we struggled to persuade Kevin to come out of his shell and join the class. He preferred doing activities alone, and hated classroom tasks that required teamwork, like lab experiments. He struggled with public speaking even in small groups, and didn’t want to try new things.
You could tell that there was huge potential there — I never doubted his academic abilities. But at times many of us at the school worried about whether he’d ever be able to make full use of those abilities to build a future for himself. Over time, however, something changed. Slowly he began to want to try new things, and to work with people. He developed into a boy of humor, and started to participate in class and to let people get to know him. And he was gradually into the high school’s work-based learning program, where he learned about information technology — an area Kevin is always gifted in. In fact, in some ways, I think it was his experience with computers that brought him out of himself and helped him join the world. Finding something he was good at gave him the confidence he’d so badly needed.
1.What challenge did Kevin Sargeant have to face in school at first?
A.He had low intelligence.
B.He lacked the love for learning.
C.He wasn’t used to team work.
D.He couldn’t make friends with kids.
2.Which of the following words can best describe the changing Kevin?
A.Kind and open-minded.
B.Talented and responsible.
C.diligent and dependent.
D.Humorous and outgoing.
3.According to the author, what led to Kevin’s change?
A.His experience with computers.
B.His teacher’s encouragement.
C.The requirement of teachers.
D.The work-based learning program.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.A Lonely Talented Boy B.Out of the shell into the Sunshine
C.The Magic of Computers D.Strength from the Surrounding World
Passage 2
You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel anxious that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
1.How do the freshmen usually feel on their first day of senior high school?
A.Proud. B.Nervous C.Excited. D.Curious.
2.What are freshmen probably worried about?
A.The learning task. B.The ability to make friends.
C.The freshman orientation. D.The relationship with teachers.
3.What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?
A.Develop friendships. B.Develop their interests.
C.Build up their strength. D.Improve their learning ability.
4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What you’ll learn in senior high school.
B.What you learned in junior high school.
C.The difference between junior high school and senior high school.
D.The importance of being more independent and responsible.
Passage 3
My first day of senior high school was a mix of excitement and anxiety. I woke up early, put on my new school uniform, and rushed to school with my parents’ wishes. When I arrived at the campus, I was amazed by its size — much bigger than my junior high school. There were hundreds of students walking around, all looking a bit nervous like me.
I found my classroom with the help of a teacher. As I walked in, all eyes turned to me. I felt my face turn red and quickly found a seat in the corner. Soon, a girl with a smile sat next to me. “Hi, I’m Wang Yu. Are you new here too?” she asked. Her kindness made me feel better. We talked about our junior high schools and our expectations for senior high.
The first class was English. Our teacher, Ms. Zhang, was friendly and introduced the course to us. She also asked us to introduce ourselves one by one. I was worried about speaking in front of the class, but when it was my turn, I tried my best to express myself. To my surprise, everyone clapped after I finished.
By the end of the day, I had made three new friends and got used to the new environment. I realized that senior high school would be a new beginning full of challenges and opportunities. I felt more confident about my future studies and life.
1.How did the author feel on the first day of senior high school?
A.Only excited. B.Only anxious.
C.Excited but anxious. D.Bored and nervous.
2.Who helped the author find the classroom?
A.Her parents. B.A teacher. C.Wang Yu. D.A classmate.
3.What did the author do in the first English class?
A.She introduced herself. B.She gave a speech.
C.She asked the teacher questions. D.She talked with Wang Yu.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The author’s senior high school is smaller than her junior high school.
B.The author made no friends on the first day.
C.The author felt more confident after the first day.
D.Ms. Zhang was a strict teacher.
Passage 4
First day of school can be hard for anyone, especially for 14-year-olds. To help anxious new students, Poly Prep has introduced a special orientation (迎新) program. School leaders believe this program helps students feel they belong and get to know the new school, which makes them less nervous.
According to the Poly website, the school welcomes around 35 to 40 new students each year, meaning almost 28% of the ninth-grade students are new to the school. Research shows that the orientation plays a key role in helping new students feel welcome.
Avery Canino, a new student, talked about her first day: “At the beginning, I felt completely lost because no one really showed us where to go. The campus was so big and crowded.” However, her day quickly improved. “I met several other new students, and we decided to stick together for all the activities. We even created a group chat that same day to keep in touch!”
Avery’s experience reminded me of my own difficult first day at Poly. I walked around the large campus alone, feeling too shy to talk to anyone. It took me almost a whole year to get used to it. Now new students make friends much faster with this orientation program.
Every student, whether outgoing or not, should feel they belong at the high school that they worked hard to get into. It seems that this orientation has already positively influenced the experiences of new students. Therefore, Poly should continue holding the orientation in the future to help all new students get a good start, build confidence, and succeed in the years ahead.
1.What is the purpose of Poly’s orientation?
A.To show students around the campus. B.To make students believe in the leaders.
C.To get students interested in the program. D.To help students feel better about the new school.
2.What do we know about ninth graders at Poly Prep?
A.Some ninth graders need a new campus.
B.No ninth graders welcome the orientation.
C.Most ninth graders already know the school.
D.Many ninth graders help new students directly.
3.What does the underlined word “stick” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Play. B.Stay. C.Meet. D.Walk.
4.Why does the writer think Poly should continue the orientation?
A.Because it helps new students to be more outgoing.
B.Because it gives students confidence for future success.
C.Because it makes students work hard to get into school.
D.Because it lets students enjoy different learning experiences.
Passage 5
Junior year (the third year of high school in the U. S. education system) is when things actually get very important. Make sure you take care of the following things.
Take the Most Challenging Course Load You Can. Go for the Honors Classes. Challenge yourself.
Earn the Best Grades You Can. Grades are important. How important are good grades? Short answer: super important.
Build Your Brag Sheet (成绩亮点单). You should know what this is by now. This sheet should be filling up with all the wonderful things you have done. By junior year, you should be an active voice in at least one extracurricular activity.
Prepare for the SAT and ACT and take one of each in the Spring. These two tests are really important for the applications process, so make sure you prepare well.
Visit Colleges. Now’s the time to let the schools actually know you’re visiting, letting them know you’re interested. Book a formal tour. The goal here is to get a feel for those schools you may apply to.
Begin to generate Your Big List. This is a list of schools that meet your requirements to research and visit.
Request Letters of Recommendation. Remember that Brag Sheet? Use it to get some great letters. Just remember to tell your teachers where to send them.
Fix these things, and you will be more confident when applying for colleges.
1.What should juniors do for their brag sheets?
A.Add their achievements. B.Use a loud voice.
C.Focus mainly on academic grades. D.Finish them after college visits.

C.It needs teachers’ recommendations. D.It includes schools the junior may apply to.
3.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To list key tasks for juniors. B.To guide grade improvement.
C.To stress SAT/ACT importance. D.To explain college application steps.
Passage 6
Seeing from the hallway, Abby Brown’s sixth-grade classroom in Marine elementary School, US, looks like any other. Go inside, however, and you’ll see that it’s one in a million. The children in Ms Brown’s class use a new type of school desk. It allows them to stand while they work.
Ms Brown designed the desk two years ago. She says that over her 20 years of teaching, she has watched children struggle for comfort behind small hard desks.
“The new desks give children the flexibility (灵活性) they need,” she said.“So they can focus better on their work.” Eleven-year-old Nick Raboin likes the idea. While doing his math problems, Nick likes to move his weight around.“Sometimes when I’m super tired, I sit,” Nick said.“But most of the time I like to stand.”
The stand-up desks come with swinging footrests, and with stools (凳子) that can be heightened or lowered. Students can change between sitting and standing as they please.
Dr James A.Levine, a professor of medicine, is concerned about the weight problems many children have today. He feels stand-up desks allowing children to move around can help with this: “We also have to change to meet their needs.”
The stand-up desk’s popularity has spread from Ms Brown’s school to other schools. At Somerset Middle School, the children in Pam Seekel’s class use both traditional and stand-up desks.
“At a stand-up desk,” Ms Seekel said, “I’ve never seen students with their heads down. It helps with being awake. And for me as a teacher, I can stand at their level to help them. I’m not bent (弯腰) over. I can’t think of one reason why a classroom teacher wouldn’t want these.”
1.What is special in Abby Brown’s classroom?
A.Students can stand when studying. B.The desks are traditionally made.
C.The classroom has a comfortable design. D.Small hard desks are provided.
2.What can be learned about the desk?
A.It has existed for 20 years. B.It is used to help with homework.
C.It is soft and can be bent. D.It can help improve concentration.
3.What is Dr James’ attitude towards the stand-up desk?
A.Disappointed. B.Appreciative. C.Doubtful. D.Concerned.
4.Why does Ms Seeker prefer the stand-up desk?
A.She can stand or sit freely. B.She can help students conveniently.
C.She can give lessons at students’ level. D.She can easily bend over to answer questions.
Passage 7
“The real question is not whether machines think but whether men do,” American psychologist BF Skinner once said. And as AI continues to become more popular, many people might be worried about whether people are really thinking at all anymore — and that includes students.
Oxford University Press surveyed 2,000 students aged 13 to 18 all over the UK. It found that about 80% of students in the UK already use AI for schoolwork. However, not all students are necessarily happy about their use of AI. More than 60% say they feel that AI has harmful effects on their skills and learning, with one in four saying AI makes it too easy for them to find answers without having to do much work themselves.
Many students say they’re worried that AI tools encourage copying instead of creating work by themselves, and they also worry about the correctness of the information AI offers. In fact, fewer than half of students who took part in the survey say they can tell if AI content is correct, and many say they’d like their teachers to help them understand what information they can believe in. A lot of students are also not sure when they should use AI for their schoolwork; about half say they’re worried that other students are using AI, and that teachers don’t always know this.
However, the results aren’t all bad. Many students say that AI has helped them get new skills, such as getting better at understanding problems, and thinking of new ideas. One student said AI also helps him “think faster.”
Alexandra Tomescu from Oxford University Press said the results of the survey show that students have a mature understanding of how AI affects learning, in both good ways and bad.
1.What can we learn from the survey according to paragraph 2?
A.All students are unhappy about using AI.
B.About 80% UK students use AI for schoolwork.
C.60% think it easy to find answers with AI.

A.Tell whether AI content is correct.
B.Decide when AI should be used.
C.recommend some useful AI tools.
D.Prevent other students using AI.
3.How does AI help students according to the text?
A.Develop practical life skills.
B.Understand themselves better.
C.Improve their thinking ability.
D.Correct mistakes in homework.
4.What does the underlined word “mature” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A.Narrow. B.Clear. C.Basic. D.Simple.
Passage 8
Millions of children across the United States are stepping into kindergarten (幼儿园) for the first time. My son is one of them. For immigrant (移民的) parents like my wife and me, the moment was deeply affecting. His classroom is filled with colorful posters, smart boards and cool learning tools. Watching him wave goodbye, I hoped he would feel welcome and enjoy the long journey of learning ahead.
Yet I could not help but think of my own first day in Uganda. At the age of four, I was sent to live with my uncle’s family for better schooling. My first “school” was an empty room with a dirt floor, wooden window covers and a tin roof that made loud noises when it rained. Later, I moved to Katebe Primary, the best in the county, where every morning we swept the classroom before lessons began. It taught me to take care of the space around me and to be responsible even with very few resources (资源). Still, I dreamed of a classroom where the only thing I needed to bring was curiosity.
That dream came true years later in Florida. At 19, I entered an American college, welcomed by a kind couple who adopted (收养) me as their son. I was amazed by the library, the technology and professors who cared about my curiosity. I studied hard, graduated top of my class and went on to further education. Education opened doors I once thought impossible.
Now, watching our son take his first steps into a school filled with various learning resources, which were out of reach for most children in Uganda, we were moved beyond words. To us, it felt like a dream that we wished every child could share. I thought of my parents, my grandmother, and my adoptive family. I also thought of children worldwide who still have no access to this chance. I hope one day they can walk into a classroom full of love, curiosity and hope too. Because that first step can change everything.
1.How did the author feel about his son’s school environment?
A.Amazed. B.Satisfied.
C.Worried. D.Upset.
2.Which of the following best describes the author’s early schooling experiences?
A.Fun and carefree.
B.Boring and stressful.
C.Interesting but demanding.
D.Challenging but beneficial.
3.What does the author mainly stress about education in the text?
A.Its role in changing one’s life.
B.Its requirement of hard work.
C.Its value in teaching responsibility.
D.Its dependence on good resources.
4.What does the author wish for children worldwide?
A.Stronger curiosity.
B.More caring teachers.
C.Positive social connections.
D.Equal access to resources.
Passage 9
Does studying philosophy (哲学) really make people better thinkers? To test this claim, as researchers, we looked at data from more than 600,000 US college graduates, compared philosophy students with those in every other field, and published our findings in the Journal of the American Philosophical Association.
The results were clear. By the end of their senior year, philosophy students did much better than all other students on tests of language and logical reasoning (逻辑推理). They also reported stronger virtues, including curiosity and open-mindedness.
Why does philosophy have such an effect? Different from many fields that focus on specific knowledge, philosophy is best understood as a method of research. It asks questions about human life and the universe and then tests possible answers. Doing philosophy means building logical reasoning, recognizing hidden assumptions (假设), and arriving at their often surprising conclusions. These habits of mind enable students to think more clearly and carefully from different aspects.
This benefit matters far beyond the classroom. At a time when public trust in higher education is at historic lows and AI is reshaping the workplace, the need for critical thinking has never been greater. AI can generate (生成) information quickly, but it cannot decide what is true or meaningful. If we humans don’t examine AI-generated information, our life is at risk.
Our research does not claim that philosophy alone guarantees wisdom or moral virtue. Intellectual (智力上的) skills can be used for selfish purposes as well as for justice. But the evidence showed that studying philosophy helps us develop habits of thought that are measurable and lasting. It gives students the tools to question assumptions, face uncertainty, and make thoughtful choices in an ever-changing world.
In short, philosophy is not beyond us — it is a necessity. It trains the mind, strengthens judgment, and prepares people to meet future challenges with courage.
1.How did the researchers carry out the study?
A.By interviewing philosophy students.
B.By reviewing earlier studies.
C.By comparing data of graduates.
D.By analyzing graduates’ behavior.
2.What makes philosophy students better thinkers, according to Paragraph 3?
A.Their thirst for knowledge.
B.Their curiosity for mysteries.
C.Their critical thinking skills.
D.Their language and logical training.
3.Why does philosophy matter in today’s world?
A.It is changing the workplace worldwide.
B.It gives us wisdom and a sense of justice.
C.It better prepares us for complex realities.
D.It helps rebuild public trust in higher education.
4.What can we infer from the text?
A.Philosophy matters more than AI in modern society.
B.Philosophy students are the smartest among graduates.
C.Philosophy students adapt well to the changing workplace.
D.We need to study some philosophy to face the uncertain future.
Passage 10
Historically, education has always been a human-operated process. Teachers were responsible for delivering lessons, checking students’ grades, and managing classroom environments. However, the rise of digital technology led to the development of online learning platforms, digital classrooms, and online courses. And the combination of AI promises to take these advances to an entirely new level.
Every student has a unique learning style, speed, and set of strengths and weaknesses. Traditional education systems often struggle to meet these individual needs due to class size, limited resources, and the one-size-fits-all approach. AI could change that. With AI-driven learning platforms, students can work through material at their own speed. For example, platforms like Coursera, Khan Academy, and Duolingo use AI to analyze student progress and offer content, quizzes, and exercises made for them.
Traditionally, teachers are often busy with tasks such as grading, lesson planning, and tracking student progress. AI can ease this burden by automating (使自动化) many of these tasks, freeing up valuable time for teachers to focus on student engagement and instruction. For example, AI tools can grade homework, exams, and quizzes much faster than a human educator. This is especially valuable for large classes where individual grading might take days or even weeks. Moreover, AI can help teachers with lesson planning by analyzing vast amounts of educational content and suggesting resources that best match student learning needs.
With AI, students who have trouble with language, disabilities, or socio-economic challenges have more opportunities to receive education. AI-powered tools, such as Google Classroom and Microsoft Word, are developed to support students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. Moreover, AI tools are making it easier for students who can’t see or hear well. Text-to-speech, real-time translation, and sign language identification technologies can break down barriers for students who face challenges in traditional educational environments.
Looking ahead, AI’s role in education will continue to develop. As technology advances, we can expect AI to become part of learning platforms, making education more interesting and engaging.
1.What are AI platforms in paragraph 2 mentioned to show?
A.AI’s aid in setting learning goals.
B.The rapid development of AI technology.
C.AI’s role in personalizing learning resources.
D.The comparative advantage of traditional education.
2.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.AI’s assistance to educators.
B.AI’s possibility of replacing teachers.
C.The importance of student engagement.
D.Teaching challenges in large classrooms.
3.What can we infer about AI-powered tools according to the text?
A.They help lessen (减少) cultural differences.
B.They make education more accessible.
C.They need further technical improvements.
D.They make students’ school life more colourful.
4.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To recommend AI tools and platforms.
B.To remind students of AI’s weaknesses.
C.To discuss the impact of AI on education.
D.To list the advantages of digital technology.

D.The survey covers 2,000 students under 18.
2.What do students hope teachers do for them?
A.Tell whether AI content is correct.
B.Decide when AI should be used.
C.recommend some useful AI tools.
D.Prevent other students using AI.
3.How does AI help students according to the text?
A.Develop practical life skills.
B.Understand themselves better.
C.Improve their thinking ability.
D.Correct mistakes in homework.
4.What does the underlined word “mature” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A.Narrow. B.Clear. C.Basic. D.Simple.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.C 4.B

One student said AI also helps him ‘think faster.’(许多学生说,人工智能帮助他们获得了新技能,比如更好地理解问题,以及思考新的想法。一位学生说,人工智能还帮助他‘思考得更快’。)”可知,AI通过帮助学生更好地理解问题和激发新想法来提高他们的思维能力。故选C。
4.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Alexandra Tomescu from Oxford University Press said the results of the survey show that students have a mature understanding of how AI affects learning, in both good ways and bad. (牛津大学出版社的Alexandra Tomescu说,调查结果显示,学生对AI如何影响学习有着……的理解,包括好的方面和坏的方面。)”结合上文可知,学生们既认识到了AI带来的便利和新技能,也清楚地表达了对其鼓励抄袭、信息准确性等负面影响的担忧。这种能全面看待事物利弊的理解是深刻而清晰的。因此“mature”在此处为“清晰的,透彻的”之意,与“clear”含义相近。故选B。

【答案】1.C 2.C 3.D 4.D
