Last December, I was looking for a beautiful mountain resort (度假胜地) for my holiday. A friend suggested Zermatt. The name alone was enough to interest me at once, so I did some research, bought a ticket, and soon found myself on a plane to Switzerland.
Located in the south of the country, Zermatt is known for its mountainous scenery. The town sits at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most famous mountains in the Alps. As my train moved towards Zermatt, I couldn’t wait to see with my own eyes the shape of the great Matterhorn.
I come from the busy city of Bangkok, and it was fascinating to find myself in a small town with fewer than 6,000 people. Throughout the year, Zermatt’s population increases very much with tourists. The town, which is famous for its outdoor activities, invites people to come to ski, hike, climb ... anything, as long as they don’t bring their car.
Before I got there, I found out that I wouldn’t be able to rent (租) a car. In fact, cars that use traditional oil are not allowed inside the town. That’s because the people of Zermatt are so proud of their view of the great Matterhorn that they don’t want it blocked by air pollution from cars. So visitors like me usually arrive in Zermatt by train.
I quite enjoyed being “car-free” and exploring the place on foot. I used one of the town’s electric taxis when I wanted to travel a bit further. I also took an electric bus once. But nothing was more fun than exploring the area in an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage (四轮马车). I was happy to exchange the polluted skies of downtown Bangkok for the clean, clear mountain air. And until I experienced the peace and quiet in Zermatt, I didn’t realize how much traffic noise I hear every day. The town’s electric cars were practically silent.
4. What is Zermatt famous for?
A. Its local people. B. Its activities in the open air.
C. Its traditional food. D. Its historical buildings.
5. Which transport can’t be used in Zermatt?
A. Electric taxis. B. Horse-drawn carriages.
C. Electric buses. D. Cars running on oil.
6. What did the writer notice about Zermatt compared to Bangkok?
A. It has more traffic. B. It is quieter.
C. It is more polluted. D. It has less clean air.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A trip in Zermatt. B. Scenery in Zermatt.
C. Transport in Zermatt. D. Activities in Zermatt.
C
It’s no secret that there is a space problem in Manhattan. People build up higher and higher buildings because there isn’t much land left and there is no room to build out. So people have been building lots of tall and thin buildings. Developers are trying to build higher and higher buildings. However, the government has made laws that don’t allow developers to build too high buildings.
Oiio Studio thinks about things differently, “What if our buildings were not tall but long?” So the founder of Oiio Studio, Ioannis Oikonomou, designed a U-shaped building, the Big Bend. It would be a very thin building. It would curve (弯曲) at the top and return to the ground. Oikonomou said he thought of the great idea because he learned from a piece of news. It said that a company made a lift that could travel in curves. So he designed the Big Bend. He thought it as “the longest building in the world”. It would be 4,000 feet from end to end and would need a different lift system.
“We can’t change the law, ______. So if we can bend (使弯曲) our building, we would be able to build one of the most amazing buildings in Manhattan,” Oiio Studio said.
The Big Bend is just an idea for now. Oikonomou has sent the plans to a few companies, and is looking for developers. If successful, they will build the Big Bend around West 57th Street。
8. Why are developers trying to build higher and higher buildings in Manhattan?
A. Because the buildings are too low.
B. Because people enjoy tall buildings.
C. Because there are too many people.
D. Because there isn’t much land left.
9. Which of the following can be put in “________” in Paragraph 3?
A. but we can change our buildings B. but we can report news
C. but we can build buildings D. but we find a company to help
10. What can we infer from the passage?
A. No one wants to build the Big Bend.
B. The Big Bend will be very, very high.
C. They have not built the Big Bend yet.
D. We can see the Big Bend in Manhattan now.
11. Which of the following is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
Some people like the freedom of driving their own cars. But others find driving to be inconvenient or even dangerous. Fortunately, the driverless cars we’ve seen in movies and TV shows are on the way here.
The first driverless car to hit the screen was Herbie, a cute talking car from the 1968 comedy The Love Bug. Herbie could drive by himself and even talk to his human friends. He didn’t have any advanced (先进的) technology—just magic.
KITT was another driverless car that appeared on the 1980s TV show Knight Rider. KITT used advanced AI to drive itself and help its rider Michael Knight catch criminals.
While the driverless cars of today can’t talk to us, they do have many similarities to the ones we’ve seen onscreen. Nearly every major car company is working on their own autonomous vehicle (AV). Tesla, for example, has developed a driver-assistance system for its cars called Tesla Autopilot.
Tesla Autopilot can complete many of the tasks that human drivers usually do. It can make sure that your car is centered in the correct lane, as well as park itself and stop if it thinks that a crash might happen. However, it is not fully self-driving.
Google’s sister company Waymo seems to be leading the way in the AV area. Its self-driving cars are already being used for taxi services in the US city of Phoenix. It is the only self-driving car service that operates without human backup drivers. It uses common cameras as well as laser radar to determine distance, which allows the cars to get around without risk of crashing.
Although companies are making great progress in developing AVs, there is still a lot of work to be done. Year after year, companies promise that fully self-driving cars will become widely available. But nearly all of these promises have fallen through.
One of the problems is that designing a self-driving car that is safe and easy to use is much harder than people realize. Self-driving cars have to analyse millions of data points in order to prevent accidents and choose the correct route. Humans are used to doing this—but designing an AI that can work like a human mind to make a decision quickly is very difficult.
However, as new technologies like 5G develop, fully self-driving cars will come closer to reality.
12. Tesla Autopilot can ________.
A. talk to his human friends clearly B. stop to avoid a crash happening
C. do all the tasks as human drivers D. fly for a short while if necessary
13. What does “It” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The company of Google. B. The US city of Phoenix.
C. The self-driving car service. D. A car with backup drivers.
14. How might the future of the fully self-driving cars be according to the passage?
A. It will be too hard to design a self-driving car that is safe and easy to use.
B. Designing an AI that can make a decision like human mind is impossible.
C. Fully self-driving cars that are widely used must come to reality years later.
D. New technologies will speed up the development of fully self-driving cars.
15. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the driverless cars?
A. Inconvenient but safe. B. Difficult but fully self-driving.
C. Advanced and promising. D. Easy and safe.

A. B. C. D.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B
【解析】

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据下文的“So if we can bend (使弯曲) our building, we would be able to build one of the most amazing buildings in Manhattan”因此,如果我们能够弯曲我们的建筑,我们将能够建造曼哈顿最令人惊叹的建筑之一。可知我们不能改变法律,可以弯曲我们的建筑,也就是可以改变建筑物。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The Big Bend is just an idea for now.”

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. C

Recently we’ve made a survey about how to learn English. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
例文
Recently we’ve made a survey about how to learn English. Here are the results. About 51% of the students practice spoken English to improve their English. 25% of them like to watch English movies. 18% of the students choose to read more classics. And only 6% of the students learn foreign culture.
In my opinion, there are many good ways to learn English well. First, we should listen to the teacher carefully in class and take notes. Second, it’s a good idea to read English aloud every morning. Third, we can keep a diary in English to practice our writing skills.
All in all, as long as we work hard and find the right ways, we will be good at English.
