Life Then and Now
Today, communication and travel are fast, and it’s easy to get news. But a long time ago, things were very different.
Communication
Long ago, people usually used letters to communicate. Letters were carried by horse, and later by train or ship. Nowadays it is quite different. Letters are usually carried by plane and we can use e-mail, text messages, or phone calls to communicate with friends and family members.
News
Before there was paper, people usually talked to each other to get news. After paper was invented, people printed news on pieces of paper and newspapers entered our lives. Later, people listened to the radio for the latest news. Today we get it on the Internet any time we want.
Transportation
People long ago walked from place to place. Also, they took the carriage or boat for long-distance travel. It was slow and difficult. Today we can travel to a place in cars, buses, trains, or airplanes. We can even travel across the ocean or across the world in a day. It is fast and easy!

A. horse B. train C. ship D. air

①For the past ten years, my dad and I have attended the same school — he as an administrator (行政人员) and I as a student. Our relationship, in and out of school, has been totally unpredictable.
②When I was younger, all that my dad said was doctrine (信条) and I copied anything he did. We played games together, and stayed up late reading bedtime stories. I could count on my dad taking me to school, running into him regularly during the day, and riding home with him every afternoon.
③However, as I grew older, we were not as close as we used to be. He wasn’t cool anymore. He wore his socks too high, listened to terrible country music, and laughed too loudly in front of my friends. He became a total embarrassment (尴尬).
④For example, in my seventh grade, my dad came to our New Year’s party. He dressed up as Donald Duck, guitar in hand, singing silly songs. Just kill me! I wanted to run away.
⑤Another thing was during my 10th-grade physics project. The task was to build a wood bridge with the best strength-to-weight ratio (比率). All the students and physics teachers took part in it. So did my dad, the only administrator! Embarrassed, as usual, I ran away. However, later when I learned from my friends that my dad got the first prize and won everyone’s admiration, I found that mixed in with my embarrassment was a touch of pride. I began to recognize that we have many of the same values and sometimes the same opinions. No matter how much I had tried to escape from him, he still influenced me.
⑥I feel lucky to have such an unusual father. The relationship I have developed with my dad over the years has enabled me to look back and see how I’ve grown.
4. Which of the following shows the changes of the writer’s feelings towards his father?
A. Dependent — embarrassed — proud — lucky.
B. Dependent — proud — embarrassed — lucky.
C. Embarrassed — dependent — proud — lucky.
D. Embarrassed — proud — lucky — dependent.
5. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. the writer did everything together with his father when he was older
B. the writer’s father didn’t treat him as well as before when he grew older
C. the writer was not happy to see his father at the New Year’s party in his seventh grade
D. the writer invited his father to the physics project when he was in his tenth grade
6. Which of the following can best show the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
7. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. My Unusual School Days B. My Father and Me
C. My Loving Father D. The Changing Me
C
The holiday is the season to be joyful. However, many people feel sad or worried during or after holidays. When such feeling is connected only with holidays and doesn’t happen at other times of the year, it’s often called holiday blues (忧郁).
▲ This can be a result of money problems, extra activities and stress around holidays. People can also have holiday blues for terrible relationships with family and being alone during the holidays. Much increased traffic around holidays can cause holiday blues, too.
Holiday blues can have you feeling like hiding instead of celebrating. They can also lead to thinking patterns that aren’t helpful. For example, if you angrily shout at your kids, then you may think you’re the worst mom. If you can’t make cookies this year, you will think you’re just not as nice as you used to be. If you make efforts to make money, you may feel you’ll never be rich. So we shouldn’t think little of holiday blues.
There are some very simple and useful ways to help people to deal with holiday blues. Start new traditions to your family. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Take some time to volunteer. Take some time to take a bike ride, a relaxing walk, etc. Don’t eat too much food—overeating can make your body sick and uncomfortable.
But if you have unshakable sadness, terribly hate eating, you may need to see a doctor. Let him check your degree of sadness or worries. Talking to someone may also help you feel better. But at other times you require medical treatment. Thus, you can shake the blues off and get back to the things about your life you do enjoy.
8. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ in Paragraph 2?
A. What holiday blues do people usually have? B. Why do people have holiday blues?
C. How do people with holiday blues feel? D. Who may have holiday blues?
9. How does the writer show the terrible feelings caused by holiday blues?
A. By giving some examples. B. By showing his experiences.
C. By comparing different people. D. By listing proper reasons.
10. What can help deal with holiday blues in Paragraph 4 and 5?
A. Pushing yourself to be perfect. B. Making efforts to make money.
C. Talking with some people. D. Enjoying food as much as you can.
11. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D

He said that space rubbish is harmful to the station, and said that the scientists on the ground will keep an eye on its movement. “Once there is a threat (威胁) to the space station, action would be taken,” he said. The space station is also protected by some special equipment. “Even if we meet space rubbish, we will be safe,” he added.
⑥The Shenzhou-16 crew set off to space on May 30th, 2023 and returned to the Dongfeng landing site in October of the same year.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad to hear from you. I would like to choose the Black family. First, there are children in the family, so I can practice English with them in daily life. Second, the house has a garden where I can relax. Also, the cost is lower.
During my stay, I expect a helper to guide me around the city. I am not familiar with Sydney.
On weekends, I plan to visit the Sydney Opera House. Because I love music and it is famous worldwide. I believe I will have a wonderful time.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Ming
