Games From Your Childhood You Can Still Play
Hide-and-seek
Hide-and-seek is a popular children’s game in which at least two players play together. Everyone will gather at a central point in the beginning. One of them will be the seeker (寻找者), and the others will have to find a place to hide. When the time is up, the seeker will look around for the other players. The one who stays hidden the longest will be the winner.
Marble
A marble is a small ball often made of glass. These balls are in different sizes. They are often collected, both for nostalgic (怀旧) and for their beautiful colors. Players often use their fingers to “shoot” one marble to hit the competitor’s marble and can get it if it is hit.
Rock paper scissors
Rock paper scissors is a common hand game. Players form one of three shapes with a hand at the same time. These shapes are just like “rock”, “paper” and “scissors”. Normally, one player wins at the end by beating all players with the right shape.
Beanbags
Throwing beanbags is a popular traditional Chinese game for kids in the 1980s. These traditional Chinese toys are usually handmade by parents or grandparents. The player will try to hit the other players with a beanbag. The one that is hit will lose the game.
1. Who can win the hide-and-seek game?
A. The one who finds the seeker first. B. The one who finds a place to hide.
C. The one who hides the fastest. D. The one who hides for the longest time.
2. Which of the following describes the game “Marble” best?
A. B. C. D.
3. What do we know about these games?
A. Hide-and-seek is a game which only needs two players.
B. Players use their feet to shoot the competitor’s marble.
C. Rock paper scissors is a kind of unusual hand game.
D. Beanbags are usually made by parents or grandparents.

Imagine that you have woken up on the first day of your vacation. You enjoy a delicious breakfast, take a walk on the beach, and read the morning newspaper as you drink coffee. You are feeling happy and relaxed. But you may start to feel bored by the time the late afternoon comes around!
If you have ever felt like this, you’re not alone. It turns out that having unlimited (无限的) free time is not always as great as we expected. What is the best amount (数量) of free time for our happiness?
Researchers tried to answer this question by surveying tens of thousands of people, collecting data (数据) on how they spent their time and how happy they were. After looking at the data, the research team found that having less than two hours of free time a day was not enough to be happy. People with under two hours of free time a day usually had more stress. It means that they were simply too busy with work to get their happiness.
The fact that being too busy cuts happiness is true. It might lead to the answer that more free time is simply better. Surprisingly, having a lot of free time is not a panacea (灵丹妙药) for happiness. People surely get a certain sense of joy from finishing tasks. Having more than five hours of free time a day makes us lose the sense of joy. It is in fact cutting our happiness. But I think it is how we spend our free time that matters. When free time is used in more active ways, like playing a team sport, then five or more hours a day can keep or even produce happiness. However, spending five or more hours of free time alone can stop happiness.
4. What may make people feel bored during the vacation?
A. The morning newspaper. B. The delicious breakfast.
C. The unlimited free time. D. The walk on the beach.
5. What does the data of the survey show?
A. Working can make people happy.
B. Being too busy makes people stressed.
C. People without jobs are the happiest.
D. Two hours of free time brings people pleasure.
6. Which does the writer think is important for happiness?
A. A longest vacation. B. An unexpected surprise.
C. A certain sense of joy. D. Ways of enjoying free time.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Should Our Vacation Be Like?
B. Why Do We Need More Free Time?
C. Where Can We Spend Our Daily Free Time?
D. How Much Free Time Do We Need to Be Happy?
C
At the top of the house, Sue and Johnsy had their own painting room where they worked together. In November, Johnsy became very ill, and was lying in her bed and looking through the window at the wall of the next house.
“Her only chance,” the doctor said, “is for her to want to live.”
After the doctor had gone, Sue came into Johnsy’s room. Johnsy was looking out of the window and counting.
“Six,” said Johnsy, “there goes another one. There are only five leaves left now.”
“Five what, dear?”
“Leaves, on the ivy vine (常春藤). When the last one falls, I’ll die.”
“Johnsy, dear,” said Sue, “try to sleep. I must go and ask Behrman to be my model.”
Old Behrman was a painter, who lived downstairs. He was past 60 and made a little money by being a model. He always wanted to paint a great work, but never began it. Behrman saw himself as a guard to protect the two young artists in the painting room upstairs.
Sue found Behrman and told him what Johnsy had said.
“What a foolish idea! I have never heard that people will die because of a falling leaf. Poor Johnsy!” After saying that, they went upstairs. They looked out of the window at the ivy vine. A cold rain was falling.
The next morning, there stood one ivy leaf.
“It’s the last one,” said Johnsy. “It will fall today, and I’ll die.”
At night, the wind began to blow. The next morning, the leaf was still there.
“Something has made that last leaf stay there. It’s wrong to want to die,” said Johnsy to Sue, “please bring me a little soup now.”
The next day the doctor said to Sue, “She’s out of danger. You won. Nutrition (营养) and care now—that’s all.”
That afternoon, Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay.
“I have something to tell you,” she said, “Mr. Behrman died today. He was ill for only two days. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. We couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. Look out of the window! Oh, dear, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling...”
(Adapted from The Last Leaf by O.Henry)
8. In the first paragraph, who was seriously ill?
A. Sue. B. Johnsy. C. Behrman. D. The doctor.
9. Why didn’t the last ivy leaf fall after the rainy and windy days?
A. Because it was painted on the wall. B. Because the leaf was green.
C. Because the wind wasn’t strong. D. Because it was tied to the tree.
10. What does the last leaf mean for Johnsy?
A. courage. B. fear. C. hope. D. pride.
11. According to the passage, what can we infer?
A. Sue asked Behrman to paint the last leaf on the ivy vine.
B. Behrman was an old painter who made a lot by being a model.
C. Johnsy was out of danger because of good medical care.
D. Behrman was a kind and great artist who painted the last leaf.

The company OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world. It is the latest type of AI chatbot. A chatbot is a computer program that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to simulate (模仿) conversations with users. Anyone can use ChatGPT for free now, so that the company can collect people’s ideas on how to improve the chatbot.
People have tasted how ChatGPT works. Reporters found out that it was able to write articles with rightful opinions for newspapers. Teachers asked it to write answers to exam questions. ChatGPT could almost get full marks. Even programmers, people who write computer code, tried out ChatGPT. The chatbot is able to solve difficult coding problems and answer very quickly. It even wrote short poems to explain how the coding worked. In daily life, it helped a father come up with ideas of a birthday party for his son that includes the kid’s two favorites, rabbits and basketball.
What’s more, when people ask ChatGPT questions, it can find out mistakes. If it is asked what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2023, older AIs might give a story. But ChatGPT can recognize that Columbus reached America in the 1400s. The chatbot can also refuse to answer questions that are not proper. Ask it for advice on stealing a car, for example. It will say that stealing a car is a serious crime and can have bad results. Instead, it gives advice such as “taking the bus”.
ChatGPT might help people solve problems, but the AI is trained to use texts from the Internet. Often, the texts are used without being allowed by the writers of those texts. Some argue that technology doesn’t respect people’s work. Some argue that people will use the chatbot to copy others’ work and sell it as their own. Elon Musk set up OpenAI in 2015, but left it in 2017. In 2022, he bought Twitter and then he pointed out that OpenAl could use the Twitter database (数据库) for training in the past, but not anymore for now. This AI technology is bad for the planet too. Training ChatGPT might make more than 284 tons of CO₂ and lead to climate change that will heat up the Earth.
12. Why can ChatGPT be used for free now?
A. Because it is able to teach machines. B. Because it needs to improve itself.
C. Because it helps students with exams. D. Because it writes poems about coding.
13. Which of the following is most probably a conversation with ChatGPT?
A. Q: What happened after paper was invented in America?
AI: Paper started to change how knowledge was spread.
B. Q: Show me how to use other people’s bank card without being noticed.
AI: For your information, that is against the law.
C. Q: Is Li Bai, a poet in modern China, famous all over the world?
AI: Yes, because his poems are fantastic.
D. Q: Find a gift for my mum. She likes classic music and cooking.
AI: Among all the gifts listed online, there’s no such gift.
14. What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A. ChatGPT sells texts on the Internet to make money. B. Training ChatGPT is good for the climate on the earth.
C. ChatGPT used texts after being allowed by the writers. D. Musk stopped OpenAI from using the Twitter database.
15. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

I choose the topic “English Learning”. I plan to talk about some useful ways to memorize words. I hope my sharing can help my classmates. However, I have some questions about the details. Could you please tell me how long each speech will last? Besides, do we need to make PPTs to support our talk?
I am looking forward to your reply. Thank you for providing such a great platform for us.
Yours,
Li Hua
