M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club — we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages — you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday — Spanish; Tuesday — Italian; Wednesday — German; and Friday — French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

W: On Saturday, we’ll spend four hours delivering gifts to children. Someone already bought all these toys from a store. So we’ll bring these items to them.
M: Great! What will we do on Sunday?
W: We’ll help organize a party, serve food, and play with the children. In total, we’ll work there for eight hours on Sunday.
M: Wow! I could also help clean the area for a couple of hours after.
W: Other people will do it.

M: Certainly. Are there any trips in particular that you’re interested in?
W: Well, I like swimming very much and want to enjoy sunbathing on the beach comfortably, but my family prefer either hiking or biking.
M: We currently offer all the three types. As people love adventure, hiking is getting popular recently. But it isn’t an easy one. Maybe you should follow your heart.
W: Yeah, I don’t want a tiring holiday. What about the accommodation?
M: If you go to the seaside, you can choose a hotel or a self-catering apartment.
W: I don’t feel like cooking during the holiday. So introduce the hotel package please.
M: Sure, the price for our hotel is quite reasonable. And it covers a five-star beach-side hotel and free breakfast.
W: Does the hotel have any recreational facilities?
M: Of course. The hotel is fully equipped with a theater, a bar and a pool. You can enjoy a full rest during your stay.
W: That’s good for me. Then how much is it going to cost?

W: The Colosseum was the name of a large sports stadium in the city center of ancient Rome. It had many seats. But if you weren’t lucky enough to get a seat, there was also a standing section. It was the place where men fought against other men or wild animals. The Romans eagerly went to the Colosseum to watch the battles and they thought they were very exciting. The Colosseum was built of concrete and stone. It is still mostly standing, even today. And it is considered to be one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. You can go to Rome and take a tour of the Colosseum. Standing inside, you can imagine yourself siting in the audience long ago. Where people sat in the Colosseum was determined by Roman law. The best seat in the house belonged to the emperor who sat in the Emperor’s Box.

参考范文:
Dear John,
I’m writing to offer my advice on the English activity you plan to hold. When it comes to the two activities, the English singing contest and the book-sharing session, I would lean towards the former.
I think the English singing contest is attractive to most students. First, singing is relaxing and easy for everyone, regardless of their English level. Second, we can naturally improve our pronunciation by singing English songs, which is a fun way to learn English. However, book sharing requires plenty of vocabulary and long preparation, putting great pressure on shy students.
I believe the English singing contest will draw more participants and bring us a wonderful experience. I’m ready to help you with any preparation work if you need.
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文:
Weeks passed, and my steady efforts finally paid off. In the monthly exam, my total score improved significantly, and my ranking rose sharply in my grade. Many classmates were surprised by my progress and asked me for advice. I felt proud of my transformation. I was always grateful to Jack, convinced that his quiet note revisions and constant company had led to my progress. I clearly knew he had encouraged me on behalf of Miss Carter, yet I never linked her concern to the polished revisions in my error notebook.
However, I soon found it was not Jack who had added notes to my error notebook. He insisted that he had never touched my error notebook, though Miss Carter had asked him to encourage me. I wondered if Miss Carter had supplemented my analysis, marked wrong questions, and polished my error notes. I went to confirm it, and she admitted her silent kindness. “I just wanted to pave the way for your hard work,” she said softly. I was utterly stunned by this hidden care. This touching truth made me realize kindness had been accompanying my growth, inspiring me to keep good habits and forge ahead diligently.

Last week, I wrote down notes about my hometown snacks on my phone, yet the predictive keyboard powered by artificial intelligence (AI) kept replacing my vivid descriptions with plain words. The incident made me realize I’d grown overly addicted to AI suggestions. Researchers name this phenomenon “The Great Smoothing” — AI tools gradually remove all individuality from our writing in pursuit of convenience.
My English assignment clearly exposed the problem. I wrote an essay on “Is It Selfish to Pursue Risky Sports?” Hoping for polished sentences, I used tailored AI writing tools to revise my draft. Though the essay was logically smooth, my teacher marked it as lacking a personal voice. This puzzling result is supported by a 2024 New York University study, which finds essays polished by user-tailored AI tools share repetitive safe phrases, mixing all writers’ styles into uniform text.
AI’s influence stretches beyond writing to culture and daily speech. When I wrote about local films and food, AI kept suggesting Western items instead of regional specialties, which is consistent with a 2025 Cornell study on Western preference in AI text. Even worse, many of my classmates overuse AI-favored words in presentations, a trend recorded by researchers at a top European research institute. In the long term, constant training on AI-generated texts will result in “model collapse”, erasing rare phrases and cultural expressions.
At first, I only valued the convenience of AI’s grammar correction. Further research revealed its lasting harm — it narrows users’ vocabularies and pushes global users toward standard American English. Surveys show AI footprints widely exist in academic papers, corporate releases, and official documents. Though AI helps people without formal writing skills, it creates a homogeneous (同种类的) writing pattern that weakens individual voices.
Now I treat AI as a brainstorming partner instead of a replacement for writing, and I compose all final drafts independently. Schools also provide AI literacy courses to teach students how to preserve their original thinking. I finally understand the core truth: Writing equals thinking. We must never let AI smooth away our genuine voices.
24. Which statement may belong to the phenomenon “The Great Smoothing”?
A. AI replaces writers’ lively words. B. AI confirms writers’ creative essays.
C. AI keeps writers’ individual expressions. D. AI polishes writers’ personal documents.
25. How might the teacher feel while reading the author’s essay in paragraph 2?
A. Amazed. B. Relieved. C. Disappointed. D. Embarrassed.
26. What is a possible effect of AI on language according to the text?
A. It will enrich rare regional terms.
B. It will shape personal writing styles.
C. It will erase standard American English.
D. It will limit the users’ vocabulary range.
27. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. AI can read students’ genuine inner needs.
B. Literacy courses are the core of original writing.
C. Schools should be dependent on AI for real teaching.
D. A unique voice in writing stands for true self-expression.

Greenland sharks, the mysterious giants lying low in the deep, cold waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic, are known for their extraordinarily long life — some can live for over 400 years. Scientists have long wondered how these creatures manage to outlive all other vertebrates (脊椎动物). Through a series of studies, they desire to reveal the secrets behind their long life.
Lily Fogg, a biologist at the University of Basel in Switzerland, and her team focused on the sharks’ eyes. Examining tissue from ten Greenland sharks, including some up to 150 years old, they found that these animals possess all the necessary cellular structures for vision in the deep sea’s dim light. Surprisingly, the eye tissue showed little sign of aging. Fogg suggests this may be due to highly active DNA repair mechanisms that prevent cell death and tissue degeneration. A separate study of the sharks’ sets of genes also pointed to enhanced DNA repair functions.
However, not all organs benefit from such protection. Alessandro Cellerino, an Italian physiologist, led a study on the sharks’ hearts. Examining six Greenland sharks, his team discovered that their hearts accumulate tough scars and cellular damage over time. In humans, similar scarring would indicate cardiovascular disease, hardening the heart and reducing its pumping efficiency. Yet, despite this damage, the sharks’ hearts continue to function effectively. Researchers suspect that protective hormones may help their hearts stand up to some age-related injuries.
Catherine Macdonald, an ecologist at the University of Miami, finds these findings fascinating. She notes that any animal with such a long lifetime must possess both repair and maintenance abilities. While studying living Greenland sharks is difficult owing to their deep-sea habitat — they can dive to 2,200 meters, Macdonald believes that understanding their long life can offer valuable insights into human aging. However, she cautions against drawing quick conclusions on human health, emphasizing that these discoveries are just the beginning of a much longer scientific journey.
28. What is the scientists’ attitude to Greenland sharks’ long life?
A. Curious. B. Shocked. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
29. What can be inferred about Greenland sharks’ hearts?
A. They stop functioning at an old age.
B. They age faster than their eyes.
C. They are free of age-related injuries.
D. They can repair damage thoroughly.
30. What does Macdonald think of the findings?
A. They are difficult to understand. B. They lack corresponding evidence.
C. They are invaluable for further study. D. They offer conclusions on human health.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. How Greenland Sharks Resist Aging B. How Greenland Sharks Live in the Sea
C. How Greenland Sharks Get Genetic Protection D. How Greenland Sharks Keep Healthy for Long
D
Researchers report that radiation testing suggests solar cells (电池) made from carbon-based or organic materials could outperform conventional silicon and gallium arsenide (硅和镓砷化物) for generating electricity in space. While previous research focused on how well organic solar cells transformed light to electricity following radiation exposure, the new investigation mainly dug into what happened inside the materials to cause drops in performance.
Silicon semiconductors aren’t stable in space because of proton (质子) radiation coming from the sun. The researchers tested organic solar cells with protons because protons are considered the most damaging particles in space for electronic materials. Space missions often rely on gallium arsenide for its high efficiency and resistance to proton damage, yet it costs a lot and, just like silicon, is heavy and rigid. By comparison, organic solar cells are flexible and lightweight, and this research aims to explore the reliability of organic materials since space projects prefer proven and dependable substances. The test found organic solar cells built with small molecules (分子) suffered no harm from protons even after three years of radiation exposure; on the contrary, versions made of complicated branched molecules lost half their working efficiency.
“We found protons cleave some of the side chains or break them apart, and that leaves an electron trap which worsens the performance of the latter type of organic solar cells,” says Stephen Forrest, the lead corresponding author of the study. These traps grab onto electrons freed by light hitting the cells, preventing them from flowing to the electrodes that harvest the electricity. “You can heal this damage by heating the solar cells. But we might find ways to fill the traps with other atoms, eliminating this problem,” Forrest adds.
It’s possible that sun-facing solar cells could essentially self-heal at temperatures of 100 ℃ — this warmth is enough to repair the bonds in the lab. But questions remain. For instance, will that repair still take place in space? Is the healing reliable enough for long missions? It may be more straightforward to design the material so that the performance-killing electron traps never appear.
32. What did the new research aim to do?
A. Develop radiation protection methods for cells.
B. Test light-electricity transformation within cells.
C. Look into conventional solar cells’ outer features.
D. Find out inner causes of reduced cell performance.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The imaginary ways to raise cell efficiency.
B. The comparison of different organic molecules.
C. The proton radiation test on organic solar cells.
D. The drawbacks of traditional space power materials.
34. What does the underlined word “cleave” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Split. B. Fix. C. Protect. D. Harvest.
35. Why do researchers consider creating new organic solar cell materials?
A. To speed up lab bond repairing work.
B. To avoid some harmful electron traps.
C. To raise space temperature to 1,000 ℃.
D. To clear doubts about space self-healing.

An educated person understands that education is a lifelong journey, not a destination. Being truly educated means more than just having academic qualifications. 36 Such individuals are literate, culturally aware, well-informed, and composed in their demeanor.
First, staying informed about the world is crucial. An educated person follows daily news from a variety of reliable sources at regional, national, and international levels. Reading multiple publications, such as The Guardian or Le Monde, helps provide a balanced view. 37 However, you must always stay critical and not take everything at face value, noticing the biases in different reports.
Beyond current affairs, a truly educated person actively appreciates culture. 38 Immersing yourself in classic and contemporary literature fosters empathy by portraying diverse human experiences. Reading foundational philosophy provides tools to ponder morality and free will. Exploring diverse films, reading criticism, and listening to various musical genres (体裁) all contribute to a rich, cultured perspective. Taking notes while engaging with these works helps you absorb key ideas.
39 An educated person listens carefully, contributes selectively, and does not dominate conversations. Humility is key — avoiding bragging (吹嘘) shows genuine respect for others. When you don’t understand something, asking questions demonstrates a willingness to learn. A calm and level-headed demeanor is also a hallmark; instead of reacting with anger, an educated person responds calmly and seeks to resolve issues constructively.
Ultimately, becoming educated is not about showing off what you know, but about demonstrating a continuous willingness to learn. These habits require consistent effort and genuine curiosity. 40
A. Listening to news radio is also valuable.
B. Besides that, seeking is an important character.
C. The truly educated person knows learning never ends.
D. It involves actively and consistently broadening your mind.
E. Equally important is the ability to engage with others thoughtfully.
F. This does not mean that you need to agree with everything you hear.
G. Visiting museums and studying art pieces help develop visual literacy.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For a long time, my study habits were incredibly undisciplined. As a senior three student buried in review tasks, I adopted a passive learning attitude. I always put off my study plans until the last minute and disliked sorting out knowledge points or reviewing mistakes. Unsurprisingly, my academic performance remained stagnant (停滞的), and I often felt anxious about my upcoming college entrance exam.
My deskmate Jack, a top student in our class, noticed my abnormal state and took the initiative to talk to me one afternoon. He did not blame me for my lazy habits but encouraged me to pull myself together and stick to daily review. “As our math teacher Miss Carter told us, true learning is about steady and effective accumulation,” he said. He also told me that Miss Carter had been worried about my learning state and hoped to help me correct my bad habits and make progress.
Jack’s sincere words gave me great motivation. I resolved to change my bad habits and start studying attentively. Strangely, shortly after I made up my mind to improve, my only error notebook became clearer and more detailed overnight, with error analysis and key reminders added to every tricky question. Since Jack always stayed late studying with me, I firmly believed these warm revisions were all his kind help.
I soon worked out a detailed daily review plan and started sorting out wrong questions and adding personal reflections in my error notebook every day. To my surprise, those tricky questions were already accompanied by professional analysis and key reminders, which greatly reduced my review pressure. Every morning, I memorized key knowledge points; every evening, I polished my error summaries based on the existing notes in the same notebook. Gradually, efficient learning brought me a sense of achievement. My anxiety faded away, and I grew increasingly confident about the college entrance exam.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Weeks passed, and my steady efforts finally paid off.
However, I soon found it was not Jack who had added notes to my error notebook.
