Li Xiang: Wait … Is that a telephone?
Kangkang: That’s right. Well, the first telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.
(Kangkang and Li Xiang are talking about the pictures in a science museum.)
Li Xiang: Cool. Over a hundred years ago, people could already talk over a distance.
Kangkang: Yes. Is that a bike?
Li Xiang: No, it’s the first car. It was invented by Karl Benz in 1886.
Kangkang: I see. It must be a lot more convenient to travel in cars than on horses. These great inventions have truly changed the world, haven’t they?
Li Xiang: They certainly have.

Language points
1 It is said that it was invented in 1879.
类似的句型还有:It is believed that...(人们相信……)、It is reported that...(据报道……)。
例句:
It is said that she can speak five languages.(据说她会说五种语言。)
It is said that the meeting will be put off.(据说会议会被推迟。)
2 He brought us light at night with his invention.
bring sb. sth. / bring sth. to sb.(给某人带来某物)
The new policy brought the company great benefits.
Spring brings warmth to people.
3 He invented more than two thousand things in his whole life.
more than + 数字(超过……,多于……)
对话中是 more than two thousand things(超过两千件东西)。
例句:
More than 100 students took part in the competition.
He has lived here for more than 20 years.
4 That’s what makes him famous all over the world.
That’s what makes him famous...(那就是使他出名的原因)
what makes him famous
That’s what I want to know.
Hard work is what makes him successful.
His kindness makes him popular.
5 It must be a lot more convenient to travel in cars than on horses.
It must be...(一定是……)
It must be a lot more convenient
You must be tired after the long journey.
She must be at home now because the light is on.
5 It must be a lot more convenient to travel in cars than on horses.
a lot more + 形容词(……
类似的修饰词还有 much / far / even / a little 等。
例句:
This problem is a lot more difficult than that one.
She feels a lot better today.
6 These great inventions have truly changed the world, haven’t they?
These great inventions have truly changed the world, haven’t they?
You have finished your homework, haven’t you?
She doesn’t like coffee, does she?

The mobile phone was invented by Martin Cooper, an American engineer at Motorola, who made the first handheld cellular phone call in 1973 in the USA. That phone, the Motorola DynaTAC, weighed over 1 kilogram and offered just 30 minutes of talk time.
