The summer before senior year, my church group joined the Appalachia Service Project to clean and decorate homes in West Virginia. Where we went, there was no shortage of need. Arriving like a small army, we were ready to battle poor living conditions for lowincome families; our tools were our weapons.
My group was assigned a firedamaged home. As we parked on the dirt driveway, an excited little girl appeared — barefoot, in dirty clothes, wearing the biggest smile. “Ma, Ma, they really came!” she yelled. Her name was Dakota.
My task was transforming her firedamaged dining room into her bedroom.
We worked hard for five days: tearing down walls, hammering, sawing, and painting. Dakota often peeked at us and remained shy, fluttering nearby like a butterfly but keeping her distance.
This dramatically changed on our final morning.
Speaking with her grandmother, I learned Dakota loved her new room so much she’d slept in it even though it wasn’t quite ready. Suddenly, I noticed Dakota hiding. Cautiously, she stepped forward, face dirty but bright blue eyes shining, and silently handed me a folded piece of paper. Unfolded, it revealed a crayon drawing: two girls holding hands. “It’s us,” she whispered.
Written at the bottom were three heartbreaking words: “Please don’t leave.”
Almost in tears, I hugged her tightly. She hugged back, and for a long moment, neither let go.
Later, sitting under a tree, we shared apples. As she told me about her life and struggles she and her family endured daily, I began to reflect on my own life. Deciding what to wear on Friday night or celebrity gossip seemed meaningless. My perspective shifted, refocusing on friends, family, and belief, all because of one special little girl.
I left with muddy boots and holes in my jeans. But because of Dakota, I brought back something far more profound: a deeper appreciation for all my life’s blessings. I’ll never forget that barefoot little angel with the dirty face and unforgettable smile.

The moment came when our group had to pack up and say goodbye. Seeing us load tools into the truck, Dakota stood silently by the door, eyes filled with tears. Though I could not stay, I hoped she could hold hope for life. With a reluctant wave, I got on the truck, my heart filled with warm sorrow.
Years later, I still keep Dakota’s crayon drawing in my drawer. The simple hand-drawn picture has become my most precious treasure. Whenever I encounter frustration or feel unsatisfied with my life, I will take it out and look at it. It constantly reminds me to be grateful for what I have and stay humble and kind. That summer encounter taught me the true meaning of happiness. It is selfless love and gratitude that light up life and push me to keep passing on warmth and kindness to others.
