Gathering ingredients for my favorite sandwich takes time. Certainly more than 10 seconds — the time my fridge allows me to quietly search inside. After those 10 seconds, a series of ear-piercing beeps begin — an alarm to remind forgetful humans to close its doors. My suspicion is that the alarm, which cannot be neutralized, was designed to stop my late-night search in the fridge — my wife has long warned me that midnight snacking is bad for my waistline.
The frightened fridge is just one example of the creations by engineer-designers who are convinced that seniors like me can’t survive without beeping reminders. My car beeps constantly, particularly when I get out. There is simply no way to stop it. At first, I thought the car was just too sad to see me go.
It is not just the fridge and the car. Once I started paying attention, I realized our environment is filled with reminder noises. The stove (炉灶) sings too — leave a burner on and it performs its own little concert. As for my phone, even after turning off every notification I can find, calendar reminders still get through.
So I went online looking for a solution — and found a video of an equally frustrated man taking apart the beeper on the exact same fridge model. I can handle the fix. But now the question is: Do I really want to? What if I leave the fridge door partly open and ruin a costly roast? What if I miss the notification that reminds me of an appointment I may forget? The consequences of an unbeeped life may be too serious to risk.
Finally, tool in hand, I stand before the fridge. If there were a silence option, I might leave it alone. But there isn’t — and I’ve had enough. I’ll remove the noise-maker and put a sticky note on the door instead, reminding me to close it. The reward of a successful late-night search for a delicious sandwich is definitely worth it.
4. What does the underlined word “neutralized” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Used. B. Heard. C. Disabled. D. Repaired.
5. The stove and phone are mentioned to illustrate that ________.
A. elderly people have a failing memory
B. modern machines are poorly designed
C. technology changes seniors’ living habits
D. beeping alarms are unavoidable in daily life
6. What can be inferred about the author from paragraph 4?
A. He fails to find a way to stop the noise.
B. He considers the online video unhelpful.
C. He worries about life without reminders.
D. He is unable to fix the fridge by himself.
7. What does the author finally decide to do about the fridge?
A. Buy a much quieter fridge. B. Tolerate the disturbing noise.
C. Avoid late-night searches in it. D. Replace the alarm with a note.
C
Not too long ago, on a cold winter night, there was a teenager who wanted more screen time and a parent who said no. The teenager was advocating for her right to scroll (刷屏) for an extra 30 minutes. The parent argued that none of her friends’ parents let them have screens after 9 o’clock. “I thought, in this family, we don’t compare ourselves with other people, Dad?” the teenager replied. The parent — who was me, by the way — just got served. Since they were young, I have told my kids not to compare themselves with other people. I have argued countless times that comparisons are the “thief of joy”.
Although my daughter didn’t win, she did help expose one of the worst pieces of advice I have ever given. In my defence, I did what we’ve all done before, which is to repeat received wisdom without exploring the fine differences. But now is the time to set the record straight, which starts with questioning the idea that all social comparison is unhealthy.
Social comparisons do, of course, often get us into emotional trouble. But they can be harnessed (利用) for our betterment if we understand how they work. The social comparisons we make — ones that lead us to feel good or bad about ourselves — are vital to our ability to thrive (成长). Science provides a guide we can use to harness the way we perform these comparisons to reduce their negative emotional impacts.
Comparing yourself with someone who is outperforming you could result in feelings of envy if you focus on the things they have and you don’t, or it can be energizing and inspiring if you use these comparisons as a source of motivation, for example, “If they can achieve that, so can I.” Comparing yourself with someone who is doing worse than you could result in fear and worry if you think about how you could fall into similar circumstances, or it can draw out feelings of gratitude and appreciation if you use that comparison to broaden your views—for example, “Wow, things could be much worse; I’m doing great.”
What I wish I taught my daughter earlier are these nuances. How we feel about ourselves rests not just on whom we compare ourselves with but also on how we think about that comparison. That’s something we all have control over.
8. How did the author feel about his daughter’s argument?
A. Excited. B. Inspired. C. Energized. D. Relieved.
9. According to the passage, which best explains why social comparisons can be beneficial?
A. They help people avoid emotional trouble completely.
B. They provide motivation when viewed from a positive angle.
C. They allow people to control others’ opinions effectively.
D. They eliminate the fear of falling behind others permanently.
10. Which of the following social comparison examples would the author most likely agree with?
A. A student who stops checking classmates’ test scores to avoid feeling bad.
B. An employee who feels discouraged after seeing a colleague’s promotion.
C. A fitness enthusiast who uses a professional athlete’s training routine as inspiration to improve their own workouts.
D. A person who frequently compares their lifestyle with influencers’ selected posts on social media.
11. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Comparing Ourselves with Others Can Become a Healthy Habit
B. Comparing Ourselves with Others Can Strengthen Family Ties
C. Social Comparisons Can Get Us into Emotional Trouble
D. Social Comparisons Can Be Controlled by Science
D
Chinese scientists have developed a new refrigeration method that solves a long-standing challenge in cooling technology. Published in Nature, the study responds to rising energy demands in applications ranging from food preservation to data center cooling.
Traditional vapor-compression systems consume vast amounts of electricity and rely on harmful refrigerants. In China, refrigeration accounts for nearly 20% of the nation’s electricity use and 7.8% of its carbon emissions (碳排放). While solid-state cooling avoids harmful gases, it suffers from poor heat transfer, limiting its real-world application.
Led by Professor Li Bing from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team overcame this by combining solid cooling effects with liquid flow. They used a common, non-toxic salt whose dissolution (溶解) in water absorbs large amounts of heat. Conversely, applying pressure causes the salt to come out and release heat. Cycling this pressure achieves continuous cooling.
“Unlike traditional solid methods, where heat moves slowly, our system integrates the refrigerant and heat-transfer medium into a single liquid,” Li said. “This solves the ‘impossible triangle’ — achieving low pollution, strong cooling, and fast heat transfer all at once.”
Lab tests showed a temperature drop of nearly 30°C in just 20 seconds at room temperature, and up to 54°C at higher temperatures — significantly outperforming existing solid coolers. A prototype cycle achieved a cooling capacity of 67 joules per gram with nearly 77% efficiency. The system also proved stable, reversible, and instantly responsive to pressure changes.
“This technology moves beyond traditional refrigeration principles,” Li added. “By turning the coolant into a fluid, it opens the door to high-performance, zero-emission cooling for homes and industry.”
He noted the method’s strong high-temperature performance makes it an ideal candidate for heat management in next-generation AI computing facilities. While engineering challenges remain, especially in achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles, the principle could be adapted to other materials for diverse cooling needs.
12. What is the main problem with traditional solid-state cooling systems?
A. They transfer heat poorly. B. They produce harmful gases.
C. They fail at high temperature. D. They use too much electricity.
13. What is the key innovation of the new cooling method?
A. Using salt instead of chemical refrigerants.
B. Increasing pressure inside traditional systems.
C. Replacing pressure cycles with continuous flow.
D. Combining solid cooling with liquid heat transfer.
14. Why does the author mention the “impossible triangle” in the text?
A. To highlight the value of the new system.
B. To illustrate the design of the new system.
C. To explain why old systems are still in use.
D. To show the limitations of previous systems.
15. What does Li Bing see as a promising application of the new technology?
A. Preserving food in supply chains. B. Replacing traditional home refrigerators.
C. Cooling future AI data centers. D. Achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles.

What is Creative Chaos?
Many people who work in creative fields often prefer a chaotic or disorderly environment around them while they work on new ideas or projects. The painter Pablo Picasso once said, “An act of art begins as an act of destruction.” ____16____
Creative chaos occurs when established patterns are broken, with the hope of something new arising from the positive chaos by the destruction. ____17____ They often gain fresh and surprising achievements when getting through a creative deadlock.
According to an old saying, one cannot make an omelette (鸡蛋饼) without breaking some eggs. ____18____ One cannot create an exciting new dish without burning several pans and breaking dozens of eggs. People who do well in such an environment are most comfortable at the moment of discovery and beyond. They are less interested in the weeks or months of experimentation that lead up to it. This explains why creative people’s offices are often filled to the ceiling with a mess of papers and materials. ____19____ The excitement of a new discovery matters more.
The practice of creative chaos in the workplace has long been debated. Some employees whose jobs require significant creativity often find themselves in conflict with their bosses. These bosses fail to understand their need for disorder. An artist working alone in a studio or a writer working in an office may be able to work in chaos. ____20____ Maintaining a balance between order and disorder can be challenging for companies that need employees with creative backgrounds.
A. The theory remains to be proved.
B. It can be applied to different situations.
C. For them, order and tidiness come second.
D. But company employees may lack that luxury.
E. This idea goes even further with creative chaos.
F. Creative people see this moment as a breakthrough.
G. It well describes the phenomenon known as creative chaos.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My brother’s wedding brought us to Mexico City. It is a beautiful place with amazing food, but it also has an alarming crime rate, including kidnappings (绑架) of tourists. Before arriving, my sister-in-law-to-be, who lived there, relayed all the safety tips.
“Never get in a red-and-gold cab. Those aren’t licensed, and anyone can paint their car, abduct you, steal your money, and make you empty the ATM,” she said. Her smile didn’t match the severity of the warning.
“Check. Avoid red-and-gold cabs,” I replied.
On the day of the wedding, my husband and I were to be separated. My sister-in-law had arranged for my mother and me to have our hair and makeup done in my hotel room. Once our transformation was complete, we’d head to the hotel shuttle (班车) to take us safely to the wedding pictures at the venue, which was only across the street. We could have walked if it weren’t for the heels we were spending the next twelve hours swelling in.
We stood outside our hotel awaiting transport. In Mexico City, weddings are formal affairs. We were wearing gowns (礼服), so the locals knew there was a wedding.
A coach pulled up in front of us, and the hotel staff seated us. All the other rows were full of people in gowns and suits. The occupants were having heated conversations in Spanish.
I don’t speak Spanish.
We asked the driver if we were on the right transport, and the answer was a nod. Hundreds of Spanish-speaking people were going to my brother’s wedding. I had only met five of them at that point, and all of them were currently at the hotel smiling for the camera, so it was reasonable to assume the driver was correct.
The van (客车) headed in the direction we were going when I realized that everyone else had plans to attend the same wedding — and it wasn’t my brother’s.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The van turned around and drove past our destination.

【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. A

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】16. G 17. F 18. E 19. C 20. D

As a symbol of traditional Chinese culture, chopsticks have a history of thousands of years. Usually made of wood or bamboo, they serve as the most common dining tool for Chinese people.
Simple as they look, chopsticks contain profound wisdom. A single stick can never hold food, which teaches us that cooperation and unity matter a lot. Only when two sticks work together can we pick up food easily. Besides, using chopsticks well requires good coordination.
In short, chopsticks carry our cultural values. It is meaningful for us to inherit and promote this traditional culture.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The van turned around and drove past our destination.

Having dropped off all other passengers, the driver made a call and a red-and-gold cab came soon.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】【参考范文】
The van turned around and drove past our destination. Panicked, I gripped Mom’s hand tight — our wedding hotel was long behind us. I fumbled with my phone to show the driver our address, but my hands shook. The driver glanced at my wedding invitation, frowned, and had a rapid exchange in Spanish with the other passengers and soon figured out what was happening. Full of apology, he explained to us in broken English that we had made a mistake getting on the wrong van and now it was too late to turn back — he had to drop off these guests first at the church. All we could do was wait in the van, a knot of anxiety growing tighter with each passing block until we finally reached the church.
Having dropped off all other passengers, the driver made a call and a red-and-gold cab came soon. My blood ran cold, remembering my sister-in-law’s warning. The driver saw our hesitation and said warmly, “This is my friend, Carlos! Good man!” Trusting our first helper, we took a leap of faith. Carlos, the cab driver, nodded with a reassuring smile. “Your driver, he called me. Special mission!” he said, opening the door promptly. Despite the language barrier, Carlos comforted us all the way and enthusiastically introduced the local landmarks. As we pulled up, my relieved brother rushed over. Before we could express our gratitude to Carlos, he had melted back into the city’s ceaseless traffic — a flash of red and gold that was no longer a biased warning, but a reminder of the kindness that warmed us all.
