“Mum, did you work out next week’s housework? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun!”
When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there were some words like “sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help Mum cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom” and many others. Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim liked to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card “clean the bathroom”. Robert loved to make the bed so he picked up his favourite card. Jim again picked up “wash vegetables” and Robert chose “feed the fish”. Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.
To help the children do housework, their mother thought hard and figured out this idea. Of course, the parents did the housework at weekends and left Jim and Robert two days free.

Washing clothes, folding quilts and making bread ... these used to be impossible for Liang Jingwei. But after he took some living skills classes, they are easy things for him now. “At one time, my parents had to help me do these things. But now, I can do it all by myself,” he said.
Many middle schools open selective classes (选修课) to teach students living skills. At Liang’s school, each student spends one week on the selective classes. Eight students live in a room to learn living skills.
“Many of them don’t do anything except studying at home. They have no idea about necessary living skills. These classes make up for that,” said Zhang Jing, Liang’s teacher. They also took some classes like cooking and tea art. Liang even tried making yogurt. He learned how to mix together the milk and yogurt and how much of each he needed. “My yogurt tastes delicious,” he said happily.
Zhang Yuanfan, 12, gets better at cutting vegetables. She can cut potatoes and carrots into very thin pieces. But to improve those skills, she practices every day. “It’s not easy. I understand my mother better,” she said. Now, she often helps her mother make dinner at home.
