Activity 3: Intensive reading
Answer the questions.
1 What does “these lovely animals” in Paragraph 1 mean? Why does the writer
use this expression?
It means pandas. The writer uses this expression to avoid repeating “pandas” and to show that pandas are cute and loved by many people.
2 What is the writer trying to express by “three times as large as Yellowstone
National Park”?
3 What does “the panda’s neighbours” in Paragraph 5 mean?
The writer is trying to show that the Giant Panda National Park is very large. This tells us that China has made great efforts to protect pandas.
It means other animals and plants living in the same forests as pandas.
6
Activity 3: Intensive reading
Think about other ways to protect animals.
•Build more protected areas
•Plant more trees and food
•Stop cutting down forests
•Make rules to protect animals

12
Activity 6: Evaluate
Enjoy a sample draft.
A success in protecting animals
The Chinese white dolphin is a lovely animal living in the sea along China’s southern coast. Years ago, it was in great danger. Sea pollution and fishing made them lose their homes and food.
To save them, our government has made great efforts over the years. Many sea protected areas have been created. People make rules to stop harmful fishing. Local people also help protect the sea environment.
Because of these actions, the number of Chinese white dolphins is growing slowly. More dolphins can enjoy a safer life in the sea.
From this success, I learn that if humans take action, we can make a real difference to wild‑animal protection.
13
Analyzing your drafts according to the following evaluation criteria.
Activity 6: Evaluate
14
1. Polish your passage. (Required)
2. Search online for information related to ecological protection and write a proposal to call on everyone to protect the environment. (Optional)
