Good morning. Today I’d like to discuss a skill vital for both academic success and personal growth: critical thinking. In the information age, we are flooded with information from countless sources — social media, news outlets, and more. Memorizing facts alone is no longer sufficient. We must evaluate information, question assumptions, and form reasoned judgments. Take an online article, for instance. Instead of accepting it at face value, ask: Who wrote it? What is their motive? Is the evidence reliable? Are there alternative viewpoints? Critical thinking is not about negativity — it is about thoughtfulness and analysis. In school, it means moving beyond textbook repetition — analyzing ideas, comparing theories, and solving complex problems. This skill benefits not only academic performance but also life decisions — from career choices to social judgment and even daily beliefs. So, let’s make critical thinking a daily habit.

When I was a 21-year-old law student in Canberra, I was in desperate need of casual work. I came across an ad for a gopher (跑腿工) on one of the boards outside the library. Thinking of my bank balance, I didn’t have much choice. I took down the number of the law firm.
The job was simple: deliver letters, notices of assessment and other important legal documents. The locations, I came to realize, were varied and inconvenient. Some days, I unsteadily balanced packages on the handlebars on my way to the courts. Others, I’d find myself pushing through foot traffic to get to the bank before they closed at their unreasonably early hour.
About a week into my new job, I noticed a new note on the pile of letters and documents. It was a file addressed to “G. O. D.”
“God? What’s that?” I asked the receptionist.
“No, G. O. D. Gopher. On. Duty.”
On my bike, heroically carrying piles of papers or packages, I did feel — briefly — like the G. O. D. of my email signature. If I didn’t deliver these letters, then very serious legal cases could not continue. Helpless clients were relying on me.
Or that’s what I kept telling myself. In truth, when you’re a gopher, people don’t tend to take you seriously. Once the delivery is done, lawyers forget your name. Worse still, they call you by your extended title: “Tuesday Gopher.”
After graduating, I got a job in a far more stable and financially rewarding industry: media. Still, that year when I was G. O. D. taught me more than the five years with my head buried in books about law. It taught me to appreciate every gopher, every delivery driver I’ve met since. Delivery isn’t easy. Even in 2026, physical objects and paper and the people who deliver them still matter. One person’s gopher is the world’s G. O. D. — someone who we all rely on.
24. Why did the author decide to take the job?
A. To gain work experience. B. To ease financial difficulties.
C. To practice law in Canberra. D. To meet a school requirement.
25. What can we learn about the author’s experience as a gopher?
A. She was highly respected. B. She was quickly promoted.
C. She was dismissed as unimportant. D. She was remembered by her name.
26. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Committed. B. Innovative. C. Modest. D. Impractical.
27. What is the main message of the text?
A. A job’s worth lies in its title.
B. Career choices determine life satisfaction.
C. No job is too humble to make a difference.
D. Professional status defines a person’s value.
B 25. C 26. A 27. C
根据第一段中“When I was a 21-year-old law student in Canberra, I was in desperate need of casual work. (当我21岁在堪培拉读法律专业时,急需一份兼职工作。)”和“Thinking of my bank balance, I didn’t have much choice. (想到自己的银行余额,我别无选择。)”可知,作者接受这份工作是为了缓解经济困难。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段中“In truth, when you’re a gopher, people don’t tend to take you seriously. Once the delivery is done, lawyers forget your name. Worse still, they call you by your extended title: “Tuesday Gopher.” (事实上,当你是个跑腿工时,人们通常不会认真对待你。一旦交付完成,律师们就会忘记你的名字。更糟的是,他们还会用你的扩展头衔来称呼你:“周二跑腿工”。)”可知,身为跑腿工的作者不被重视,甚至名字都不被记住,表明她被视作无足轻重的人物而遭到忽视。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中“On my bike, heroically carrying piles of papers or packages, I did feel — briefly — like the G. O. D. of my email signature. If I didn’t deliver these letters, then very serious legal cases could not continue. Helpless clients were relying on me. (骑着自行车,英勇地驮着一摞摞文件与包裹,有那么一瞬间,我真觉得自己就像邮件签名里那个 G.O.D。如果我没有送达这些信件,那么非常严重的法律案件就无法继续进行。无助的客户正依赖着我。)”可知,作者对工作非常投入和负责,体现了她尽职尽责的品质。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“It taught me to appreciate every gopher, every delivery driver I’ve met since. Delivery isn’t easy. Even in 2026, physical objects and paper and the people who deliver them still matter. One person’s gopher is the world’s G. O. D. — someone who we all rely on. (它让我懂得了珍惜每一个跑腿工,从那以后我遇到的每一位送货司机。送货并不容易。即使到了2026年,实物、纸张以及运送它们的人依然重要。一个人的跑腿工就是全世界的“G. O. D.”——一个我们所有人都依赖的人。)”可知,作者在这里点明主旨,她从这段经历中领悟到:没有哪份工作卑微到无法产生影响,每一个看似不起眼的岗位都有其重要性。
C
In 2024, scientists revealed that sperm whales, Earth’s largest toothed whales, use a so-called “phonetic alphabet” (语音字母表) made up of codas, or distinct series of clicks, that seems to be the foundation of their language. Now, the initiative has yielded another surprising finding. Sperm whales appear to change their clicks in the presence of underwater noise from ships, researchers reported in a study published on June 18 in the journal Ecological Informatics. When boats were around, the massive creatures shortened the intervals (间隔) between clicks and used one type of coda more than another.
Study co-author David Gruber and his colleagues examined more than 10,000 codas produced by 13 sperm whales living off the Caribbean island of Dominica. They were recorded between 2014 and 2016 through recording devices attached to each animal. Nearby ships were detected through background noise in recordings and a database of shipping reports.
The team compared the sperm whales’ use of two different vowel-like (像元音的) click patterns, known as a-codas and i-codas, in the presence and absence of ship sounds. The sound-related properties of a-codas are like the “a” vowel in human speech, while i-codas are like those of the “i” vowel.
Analyses revealed that the whale “vowels” changed both structurally and temporally when there was noise pollution from boats. The sperm whales made many more a-codas than i-codas, and the codas were faster, meaning the time between clicks was shorter.
“The spacing between each click becomes much shorter,” Gruber says. “We call it the inter-click interval.” The team could even predict whether ships were near based on the whales’ click patterns.
The findings are especially relevant now, as underwater noise pollution has been rising due to increasing industrial and commercial activities. Shipping noise has doubled each decade since it was first measured in 1960, according to the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy. The loud noise can cause hearing loss, stress responses, changes in geographic range and disturbance in feeding and reproducing in oceanic creatures.
28. What did the new study find about sperm whales?
A. They communicate through codas.
B. Noises change their breathing intervals.
C. The phonetic alphabet is unique to them.
D. They adjust click patterns in response to ship noises.
29. Which coda pattern might sperm whales adopt with shipping noise?
A. a-a-a-a i-i-i-i a-a-a-a a-a-a-a
B. i-i-i-i i-i-i-i i-i-i-i i-i-i-i
C. i — i — i — i i — i — i — i i — i — i — i
D. a — a — a — a i — i — i — i i — i — i — i
(a = a-coda i = i-coda / — = shorter / longer interval)
30. Why is increased noise pollution mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To justify the choice of research subjects.
B. To imply the significance of the research.
C. To illustrate the limitations of the research.
D. To provide context for the research method.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Whales Prefer Codas in Noisy Waters B. Whale Clicks Help Locate Nearby Ships
C. Underwater Noise Threatens Marine Life D. Ship Noise Impacts Whale Communication
D 29. A 30. B 31. D
根据第一段中的“Sperm whales appear to change their clicks in the presence of underwater noise from ships, researchers reported in a study published on June 18 in the journal Ecological Informatics.(研究人员在6月18日发表于《生态信息学》期刊的一项研究中报告,当存在来自船只的水下噪音时,抹香鲸似乎会改变它们的咔嗒声。)”
根据第四段中的“Analyses revealed that the whale “vowels” changed both structurally and temporally when there was noise pollution from boats. The sperm whales made many more a‑codas than i‑codas, and the codas were faster, meaning the time between clicks was shorter.(分析表明,当船只造成噪音污染时,鲸鱼的“元音”在结构和时间上均发生变化。抹香鲸发出的a‑尾韵叫声比i‑尾韵叫声多得多,而且尾韵叫声速度更快,意味着咔嗒声之间的时间更短。)”可知,船只噪音环境下抹香鲸大量使用a‑coda,咔嗒声间隔短。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The findings are especially relevant now, as underwater noise pollution has been rising due to increasing industrial and commercial activities.(随着工商业活动增加,水下噪音污染不断加剧,这一研究发现在当下格外有现实意义。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Sperm whales appear to change their clicks in the presence of underwater noise from ships, researchers reported in a study published on June 18 in the journal Ecological Informatics.(研究人员在6月18日发表于《生态信息学》期刊的研究中报告,当存在船只水下噪音时,抹香鲸似乎会改变它们的咔嗒声。)”
D
In 2020, a historic drought struck California’s Central Valley, where one-quarter of the food produced in the United States is grown, causing farmers to pump (泵出) vast amounts of water from wells to keep their crops alive. All that pumping reduced the water pressure within the aquifer — the underground layer of rock or sand that stores groundwater. As a result, those aquifers compacted (压缩) over the next 2 years, causing land surfaces in the northern part of the Central Valley, known as the Sacramento Valley, to sink by more than half a meter.
This kind of subsidence (下沉) is typically elastic. Rainfall into the ground refills the empty aquifers, causing the surface to rebound. But in 2021, the aquifer compacted so quickly and extensively that it likely permanently lost its capacity to store water, researchers report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Stacy Larochelle, a scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, tracked how the Sacramento Valley changed from 2016 to 2022. First, she and her colleagues gathered measurements of ground deformation across the region, collected by two European Space Agency satellites. The researchers also obtained groundwater measurements from more than 2,500 wells across the valley going as far back as the 1940s. Combined, the two data sources painted a worrying picture. From 2016 to 2020, land height rose and fell seasonally in step with the aquifer’s water level. Then in 2021, land sinking increased dramatically. Some areas fell by up to half a meter per year, well out of the historic range.
Compaction within the Sacramento Valley will likely continue for years to come. Larochelle says state officials should consider declaring the aquifer as “critically overdrafted (超采的)”, enabling them to place new limits on groundwater use. In an aquifer that’s permanently collapsed, artificial recharge — pumping water forcibly back underground — is the only option. That’s expensive and carries the risk of causing earthquakes. “Being able to have access to this water resource in a sustainable manner for the century to come is important,” Larochelle says.
32. What phenomenon does the author want to point out in paragraph 1?
A. Decline of aquifer pressure.
B. Overpumping of groundwater.
C. Land subsidence in the Sacramento Valley.
D. Record-breaking droughts in the Central Valley.
33. What does the underlined word “elastic” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Noticeable. B. Recoverable. C. Permanent. D. Gradual.
34. What can be inferred about the Sacramento Valley from the two data sources?
A. Its water level remained stable.
B. Its land sinking speeds up yearly.
C. Its aquifers failed to recharge as before.
D. Its ground deformation stopped suddenly.
35. What would Larochelle probably advocate?
A. Restricting groundwater use. B. Conducting artificial recharge.
C. Restoring aquifer water levels. D. Strengthening well monitoring.
C 33. B 34. C 35. A
根据文章第一段中的“As a result, those aquifers compacted over the next 2 years, causing land surfaces in the northern part of the Central Valley, known as the Sacramento Valley, to sink by more than half a meter.(结果,这些含水层在接下来的两年里被压缩,导致中央山谷北部(被称为萨克拉门托河谷)的地表下沉了半米多)”可知,第一段通过描述干旱、过度抽水和含水层压缩,最终引出了文章的核心现象,即萨克拉门托河谷的地面下沉。C选项“Land subsidence in the Sacramento Valley.(萨克拉门托河谷的地面下沉)”符合题意。
根据文章第二段中的“Rainfall into the ground refills the empty aquifers, causing the surface to rebound.(降雨渗入地下,重新填满空的含水层,使地表反弹)”可知,这种下沉通常是可以恢复的、有弹性的。
根据文章第三段中的“From 2016 to 2020, land height rose and fell seasonally in step with the aquifer’s water level. Then in 2021, land sinking increased dramatically.(从2016年到2020年,陆地高度随着含水层水位的升降而呈现季节性变化。然后在2021年,土地下沉急剧增加)”以及第二段提到的“But in 2021, the aquifer compacted so quickly and extensively that it likely permanently lost its capacity to store water(但在2021年,含水层压缩得非常迅速和广泛,可能永久失去了储水能力)”可知,萨克拉门托河谷的含水层已经无法像以前那样正常补充水分。C选项“Its aquifers failed to recharge as before.(它的含水层已经无法像以前那样进行补充了)”符合题意。
根据文章最后一段中的“Larochelle says state officials should consider declaring the aquifer as “critically overdrafted (超采的)”, enabling them to place new limits on groundwater use.(Larochelle表示,州政府官员应考虑将含水层宣布为“严重超采”,以便对地下水的使用施加新的限制)”可知,Larochelle主张限制地下水的使用。

____37____ The most obvious reason is the power of having two minds engaged. Simply put, two heads, twice the ideas. Another person can build on your idea, push it further, add a new angle, enhance its creativity, or turn it into something more practical. The deeper payoff is the specific expertise (专长) partners have formed. In a longtime collaboration, collaborators may know the ins and outs of a difficult technology, or the many methods that have failed until this point. That deep expertise is something they may only share with one another. This helps with efficiency. ____38____ If things get hard, there’s a reason to go on; you’re in this together. You’re accountable to another person. The same accountability isn’t there when you’re on your own.
To build a strong intellectual partnership, recognizing each person’s strengths and weaknesses is key. This awareness allows partners to divide labor strategically — playing to each other’s strengths while anticipating potential blind spots. ____39____ These include having open dialogue, checking in intentionally and regularly, learning conflict resolution skills, valuing the other’s efforts and successes, and developing the perfect workflow.
Learning to balance an intellectual partnership can take time. ____40____ Some collaborations may be strictly professional; for others — Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur, Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt, and so many more — the lifelong friendship may be exactly what fuels their success.
A. It’s different from being friends.
B. Equally important are communication skills.
C. The emotional bond between partners varies greatly.
D. Collaboration helps initiate tasks and develop continuity.
E. The intellectual benefits of partnership are rarely recognized.
F. Intellectual collaboration can be surprisingly fruitful for good reasons.
G. Working with another person also boosts determination and accountability.

Sophia and I had been creative partners since we met at summer art camp four years ago. She painted with bright, explosive colors while I preferred delicate pencil sketches (素描). Together, we often joked that she painted the world as it should be, and I painted it as it felt.
Then came the news. The city’s art academy was offering a scholarship to young artists under 18, and the application required a single original piece. Sophia grabbed my hands. “This is our chance!” We promised to support each other, spending afternoons in my studio, painting side by side, and sharing half-finished works and gentle encouragement.
But as the deadline drew closer, doubt began to grow in both of us. Sophia would stare at her brilliant sunset and sigh. “It’s too bright — almost childish,” she said. “Yours has real depth, Lily. The shadows, the stillness — they make people feel something.” I shook my head. “Mine is just sad and lonely,” I insisted. “Yours is full of joy and energy. That’s what people want to see.” She looked at me with wide, puzzled eyes. “Really? I’ve been lying awake thinking mine is nothing but noise.” We fell silent, each trapped in our own insecurity, each secretly admiring the other’s gift.
“Sophia,” I said, forcing calmness into my voice, “you should submit yours. You deserve this.” She turned, her brush still wet. “I was going to say the same to you.” She stopped, biting her lip, and then reached for her phone and scrolled (滑动) through the competition page. “Wait,” she murmured (咕哝), pointing at the fine print. “It says we can submit as a team.” She looked up at me, a small smile forming. “We don’t have to compete against each other. What if we do something together?”
I looked from her to our paintings — hers so full of light, mine wrapped in shadow — and something clicked. “They’re not competing,” I said slowly. “They’re completing each other.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
We decided to create a painting together for the competition.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Three months later, the letter from the academy finally arrived.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
We decided to create a painting together for the competition. After hours of debate, we drew a city scene — her golden sunlight flooding the left side, my soft shadows stealing in from the right. We worked day and night, sometimes arguing over brushstrokes, sometimes laughing at our mistakes, but always trusting each other’s skills. The final piece, which we named “Duality,” felt like a conversation between our souls. We mailed it off with a shared breath, knowing that win or lose, we had already created something neither of us could have achieved alone.
Three months later, the letter from the academy finally arrived. I tore it open with shaking fingers. We did not win the scholarship, but our painting earned a special mention and would be displayed in the main hall of the city museum. The judges wrote that our work “revealed a rare harmony between contrast and unity.” We hugged each other, tears in our eyes. The prize we had imagined was replaced by something better — our art would speak to strangers. That afternoon, we began dreaming of our next work, no longer afraid of shadows or light.

An intellectual partnership is more than being coworkers. ____36____ It’s close but not romantic; it’s lifelong but outside the family. An intellectual partnership includes learning, investigating, challenging, and celebrating the thing two people are most passionate about, together.

We decided to create a painting together for the competition.

We must evaluate information, question assumptions and form reason judgements taken online article. For instance, instead of accepting IT at base value, ask who wrote IT? What is their motive? Is the evidence reliable? Are their alternative viewpoints? Critical thinking is not about negativity. IT is about potfuls ness and analysis. In school, IT means moving beyond textbook repeated analyzing ideas, comparing theories, and solving complex problems. This scale benefits not only academic performance, but also life decisions, from career choices to social judgment and even daily beliefs. So let's make critical thinking a daily habit. Good morning.
