Evans Wadongo was from a village in Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp. Evans’ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for this reason, so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to university. He continued to worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realised it was not just bad for schoolchildren but for the whole family. It was difficult to come up with a different kind of lamp that was cheap and good for the environment. Yet Evans did not give up.
One day, he had an idea. He could build a small solar light. Sunlight is free and solar power is good for the environment. Evans built his first solar lamp, and it worked. He began to build more lamps and sent them to local families. An organisation heard about this and provided money for him to build more solar lamps.
Each lamp only cost 20 dollars. However, this was a lot of money to many villagers, who only earned around 34 dollars a week, so Evans made sure he kept the cost down. First, Evans used recycled materials. Next, volunteers built the lamps. Finally, people from many countries gave away money to his team, so the lamps were usually free.
Thousands of people had safe lights. Julia, a mother of three, said, “Thanks to Evans, my children have safe lights to read, and I have my own light to cook.” The solar lamps made a big difference.

Over the course of our lives, we will meet many people and form many friendships. Some of these friendships will last a lifetime, while others will fade with time. The friendships that endure are often those that have been nurtured with care and intentionality.
One of the key factors in lasting friendships is shared history. Friends who have gone through significant life events together — graduating from school, starting careers, getting married, having children — often develop a bond that transcends the ups and downs of daily life. This shared history creates a sense of mutual understanding that is difficult to replicate with new friends.
Another important factor is emotional investment. Friends who are willing to be vulnerable with each other, to share their fears, hopes and dreams, develop a deeper level of intimacy. This emotional depth is what distinguishes close friends from casual acquaintances. It requires trust and a willingness to be open, even when it feels uncomfortable.
Geographic proximity also plays a role. Friends who live close to each other are more likely to spend time together and maintain their connection. However, with modern technology, distance is no longer an insurmountable barrier. Regular video calls and messages can help maintain friendships across time zones.
Perhaps the most important element is the willingness to invest time and effort. Friendships, like gardens, need regular attention. They require effort, compromise and sometimes forgiveness. The friendships that survive are the ones that both parties are committed to preserving. In the end, the best friendships are those that bring out the best in us and make us feel that we are not alone.
36.According to the passage, what is one factor in lasting friendships?
A.Always agreeing with each other.
B.Shared history and experiences.
C.Having the same personality.
D.Living in the same city.
37.What does “emotional investment” in a friendship involve?
A.Avoiding difficult conversations.
B.Being willing to be vulnerable and share feelings.
C.Spending money on gifts.
D.Only being there for happy times.
38.Why is geographic proximity mentioned in the passage?
A.To show that it is the most important factor.
B.To contrast with technology that can bridge distances.
C.To argue that distance friendships never work.
D.To suggest that people should move closer to friends.
39.What does the passage compare friendships to?
A.A house. B.A garden. C.A journey. D.A building.
40.What is the main message of this passage?
A.Friendships are hard to maintain.
B.Friendships can last a lifetime with care and effort.
C.Friendships are not important.
D.Only childhood friendships last.

Do you feel lost in your own notes after class? Some students think they need to focus on every small detail. If this is you, you may miss the most important ideas. Others mostly listen and don’t write much down, but later they find it doesn’t help at all.
What’s the smart method? A system called the Cornell Method was invented in the 1950s by Professor Walter Pauk at Cornell University. It is a special system to make it easier for you to take, organize and remember your notes. It’s like having a smart notebook that guides you from listening in class to reviewing (复习) after class!
With the Cornell Method, your page is divided into three clear parts, each with its own job.
Notes Part: During class, write down the main information in a clear way. In this part, you can record main ideas, key points and examples. Don’t try to write every word—just listen and write down what’s important.
Clues (线索) Part: After class, go back to your notes. In this part, write short words, questions, or the most important ideas. This is good for your memory and understanding.
Summary Part: Write a few sentences here to tell what the whole page is about. This makes you think about what you learned and helps you keep the main ideas in your mind.
The Cornell Method begins to help you take notes, and then it also helps you be active in learning. It follows the next five smart steps, also called the 5R’s. First, record the important things during class. Second, reduce your notes to clues after class. Next, recite (背诵) and test yourself only with the clues. Then, reflect (思考) on what you learned and how it connects to your life. Finally, review your notes every few days.
Using this method doesn’t just help you organize your notes—it develops your mind to listen carefully, think deeply and remember longer. So next time you open your notebook, try using the Cornell Method. You may just find that studying becomes easier and even a little bit fun!

空后搭配on the right path, guide sb. on the path为固定搭配,guide“指引”贴合语境。

“I want the doll with the red dress in Annie’s shop,” Sara told her best friend, Judy.
“How will you afford (买得起) it?” Judy asked. Sara smiled. “I’ll make garlands (花环) and 16 them at the market (市场). Want to join?”
“OK!” Judy said.
The next morning, they picked (摘) several baskets of flowers and made garlands. “ 17 we sell all of them this afternoon, we can each get a doll,” Sara said. Judy shook her head. “I’ll use the 18 to pay for Kevin’s medicine.”
“Is your little brother sick (生病的)?” Sara asked.
“Yes,” Judy said. Hearing that, Sara became quiet.
Sara spent the afternoon selling garlands at the market, but Judy didn’t 19 . At 6:00, Sara sold all her garlands. She was ready to go home when Judy arrived with her garlands.
“Why are you so 20 ? The market will close soon!” Sara said.
“I had to 21 Kevin,” Judy explained.
Seeing Judy’s 22 face, Sara put her money into Judy’s hands. “Keep this for Kevin’s medicine.”
A week later, Sara and Judy made garlands and sold them 23 . Later that day, Sara ran to Annie’s shop to buy the doll she wanted, but she didn’t see it. “Where is my doll?” she asked.
Annie said, “Sorry. Someone 24 it.”
Sara cried. When she got home, her mother gave her a box. Inside, Sara was surprised to see her doll and a 25 : “For our best friend, Sara. From Judy and Kevin.”
16.A.wear B.hide C.enjoy D.sell

18.A.flower B.doll C.money D.basket
19.A.reply B.appear C.change D.continue
20.A.late B.different C.quiet D.positive
21.A.shout at B.look after C.point at D.run after

23.A.already B.once C.ever D.again

25.A.list B.medal C.note D.photo
16.D 17.A 18.C 19.B 20.A 21.B 22.A 23.D 24.A 25.C
Although“尽管”、Before“在……
shout at“对……大喊”、point at“指向”、run after“追赶”,都不合理。

39.根据第五段中“Friendships, like gardens, need regular attention.”
