The use of gentleness and friendliness is
shown day after day by people who have
learned that a drop of honey catches more
flies than a gallon of gall(一加仑胆汁).F.
Gale Connor of Lutherville,Maryland,proved
this when he had to take his four-month-old
car to the service department of the car dealer
for the third time.He told one of his friends:
"It was obvious that talking to,reasoning with
or shouting at the service manager was not
going to lead to a satisfactory solution to my
problems..”
"I walked over to the showroom and
asked to see the agency owner,Mr.White.
After a short wait,I went into Mr.White's
office.I introduced myself and explained to
him that I had bought my car from his
dealership because of the recommendations of
friends who had had previous dealings with
him.I was told that his prices were very
competitive and his service was outstanding.
36
He smiled with satisfaction as he listened to
me.I then explained the problem I was having
with the service department.'I thought you
might want to be aware of any situation that
might damage your fine reputation,'I added.
He thanked me for calling this to his attention
and promised me that my problem would be
taken care of.Not only did he personally get
involved, but he also lent me his car to use
while mine was being repaired."
The sun can make you take off your coat
more quickly than the wind, and kindliness,
the friendly approach and appreciation can
make people change their minds more willing-
ly than all the storms in the world.Remember
what Lincoln said:"A drop of honey catches
more flies than a gallon of gall."

Hello! My name is Carly Perone.I am in
Ms.Blackwell's sixth-grade class.As you
know, the student council helps with many
events at Orchid Middle School.I want to
develop a new club and invite students here to
join.It has designed a number of entertaining
and educational activities for the multicultural
club. From next week, students can come to-
gether in the music room each month and
learn about different kinds of music, foods,
and customs from all around the world.
Music brings people together.Students
who are really different in some ways often
like similar music.I think it would be fun for
the club members to share the music and in-
struments of different countries.Mr.Kapoor,
the music teacher, said he would be happy to
help us start the monthly meetings by giving a
musical presentation. He wants to focus on In-
dia,and teach the club about the sitar,a musi-
cal instrument played in India.
In addition to music,we could also learn
about foods from around the world. There are
many sorts of great foods that students may
Unt4检测卷。
never get the opportunity to try.One of them
is empanadas from Spain,a turnover with a
variety of interesting fillings. Also, there is a
wonderful Italian dessert my grandmother
makes called pizzelle.I have helped my
grandmother make this tasty dessert many
times since I was little, and I always tell my
friends that pizzelles are the most amazing
cookies in the world.
Music and food are just two examples of
what everyone enjoys, but we could also learn
about the customs practiced in other countries.
Orchid Middle School has a diverse student
population. Many students have family roots in
other parts of the world.Students could volun-
teer to have discussions about the cultures and
traditions of their ancestors'countries.Perhaps
some students might want to invite older
family members to share how traditions have
changed over the years.
A multicultural club would be a wonder-
ful way for us to gain knowledge about the
world by studying the cultures of other places.
I hope you will consider participating in the
activities of what I hope will be the newest
club here at Orchid Middle School-the mul-
ticultural club.Thank you!
()28.The purpose of the text is to en-
courage students to

Have you ever thought of taking a train
and having an adventure(奇遇)?Riding the
train can be a real adventure. That is how I
feel every time I take Amtrak.I often take
a four-hour trip to visit my children.Every
time I take this trip I never know what will
happen.
Last week when I was on the train and
38
over an hour into the train ride, there was a
man sitting by himself in the back of the train
carrying on a mobile phone conversation-in
another language. It was loud and disturbed
most of the people on the train.I think it was
annoying.
Fortunately I sat next to a wonderful old
lady who was taking a two-day trip by train.
She said her two daughters were distraught at
the thought of her driving for three days to
reach her home, although she had no trouble
driving. The train ride was the only choice for
her.She loved to look out of the window and
watch the world go by on the train.
She was fun to talk to and asked me
when my children started being parents. That
is a very good question. Both of us are old
and have children. She asked that same
question from time to time.
There are always many people on the
train from all walks of life, different countries,
and many languages.Riding the train is a
great way to increase your knowledge and
take in all kinds of cultures. If you get hungry,
you can buy food in the food car at any time.
If you need to use the restroom there is always
one available.
It sure beats driving the car, which has to
stop for food and restrooms. And it is better
than taking the bus.

closest in meaning to the under-
lined word“distraught'”in Para-
graph 3?

()34.Which of the following is TRUE
about the old lady sitting next to
the author?
A.She is too old to drive now.
B.She does not like to take trains.
C.Although she is old,she has a
good memory.
D.Her daughters live far away
from her home.

ence

One fall,my wife Elli and I had a single
goal:to photograph polar bears.We were
staying at a research camp outside "the polar
bear capital of the world"-the town of
Chruchill in Manitoba,Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing
but also dangerous.Polar bears-like all wild
animals-should be photographed from a safe
distance. When I'm face to face with a polar
bear,I like it to be through a camera with a
telephoto lens.But sometimes,that is easier
said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young
male polar bear who was playing in a nearby
lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our
camp, which was surrounded by a high wire
fence. He pulled and bit the wire.He stood on
his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence
posts.
Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear de-
fense actions we knew.We yelled at the bear,
hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells
into the air.Sometimes loud noises like these
will scare bears off.Not this polar bear
though-he just kept trying to tear down the
42
fence with his massive paws.
I radioed the camp manager for help.He
told me a helicopter was on its way,but it
would be 30 minutes before it arrived.Making
the best of this close encounter(相遇),I took
some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last
through 30 more minutes of the bear's pu-
nishment. The camp manager suggested I use
pepper spray. The spray burns the bears'eyes,
but doesn't hurt them.So I approached our
uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence,
sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar,
the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
