If you look up in a forest, you may notice something really interesting: the tops of trees don't actually touch each other. There are little gaps between them, and you can even see the sky through these breaks. This is called “crown shyness”.
Meg Lowman, a tree expert, explains that it's a tree's method to stay healthy. Trees are always fighting with each other for sunlight and water. By keeping a certain distance from each other, they reduce the chance of losing leaves when they brush against neighbouring trees. Leaves are very important, as they help trees get sunlight and water. Also, just like we stay away from sick people, trees keep their leaves from touching other trees. This helps stop harmful insects and diseases from spreading. “Tree sicknesses can come from insects or even be the insects themselves,” Lowman says. “By separating themselves from others, trees protect themselves like we do when we keep our distance from sick people.”
Crown shyness mostly happens in tropical (热带的) trees, but the lessons are also true for other trees. Trees with more space grow bigger and stronger. Lowman says we should take good care of trees, just like we take care of a rose garden. Healthy trees give us better shade, and they clean water better. “The healthier the forest, the more benefits the owner will get,” says Lowman. “When a tree gets sick, don't just cut it down. Trees support many living things like insects and birds,” the expert adds.
So next time you see trees, remember: they teach us to be good neighbours. After all, sharing space wisely keeps everyone healthy, whether you're a tree or a human!
34.What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A.What crown shyness means. B.The beauty of gaps in forests.
C.How trees grow leaves in forests. D.The importance of forests in nature.
35.Why do the tops of trees keep their distance from each other?
A.To let more sunlight reach the ground. B.To protect leaves and avoid diseases.
C.To help more rainwater fall into the forest. D.To create more living areas for insects and birds.
36.What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A.Sharing space wisely is good for all. B.Competition is important for growth.
C.Humans must live in balance with nature. D.Being alone all the time stops getting sick.
34.A 35.B 36.A
35.根据第二段“By keeping a certain distance from each other, they reduce the chance of losing leaves when they brush against neighbouring trees.”以及“This helps stop harmful insects and diseases from spreading.”
36.文章最后一段“So next time you see trees, remember: they teach us to be good neighbours. After all, sharing space wisely keeps everyone healthy, whether you're a tree or a human!”明确指出,无论是树还是人类,明智地共享空间能让每个人都保持健康,这意味着明智地共享空间对所有事物都有好处,A选项“明智地共享空间对所有人/所有事物都有好处。”符合。
C
Scene 1
Living room in Mr Frank's house,
Mr Frank is sitting on the sofa, looking sad. Lestrade enters.
Mr Frank: Good morning, sir. Please sit down and have a drink.
Lestrade: Good morning, Mr Frank. Thank you. So tell me about your case.
Mr Frank: Well, I live alone. My father passed away last week, and he left me a famous painting. I locked it in the safe (保险柜) in the living-room yesterday. When I got up this morning, however, the safe was open and the painting wasn't there!
Lestrade: I see a necklace near the open safe. Does anyone know about the painting?
Mr Frank: I showed it to only two people—Zoe and Jimmy. They both work in my house. Oh, the necklace belongs to Zoe. I saw her wear it last week.
Lestrade: I see. Outside the open window, there's a lot of mud (泥) on the wet ground. Inside the room, the floor was completely clean. Can I see Zoe and Jimmy, please?
Mr Frank: Sure. Come with me, sir.
Scene 2
Garden behind Mr Frank's house. The garden, full of roses.
(Mr Frank is sitting under a large tree. Lestrade is walking around slowly. The sound of quick footsteps is heard.)
Zoe: (Rushing to Lestrade.) Oh no, sir! It's not me! I didn't steal the painting. Believe me!
Lestrade: Calm down, Madam. Tell me what you did last night.
Zoe: I went to sleep after I did all the cleaning and washing in the house.
Lestrade: Is this your necklace, Madam? (Showing the necklace.) I found it near the open safe.
Zoe: Why, yes! It's mine! I lost it three days ago. It was cheap, so I didn't tell anyone. Sir, believe me! (Starting to cry.)
Lestrade: Madam, I never jump to conclusions. I need proof (证据). What about you, Jimmy?
Jimmy: I was on guard the whole night. It was raining and I didn't see anything unusual.
Lestrade: OK. You two can leave now. (Turning to Mr Frank.) I know who the thief is.
Mr Frank: (With eyes and mouth wide open) You do? Who is it?
Lestrade: You, sir!
Mr Frank: Me? You mean I stole my own painting? Are you joking?
Lestrade: I'm serious, Mr Frank. The mud outside and the clean floor inside told me that probably no thief broke into your house. Before I came here, I had checked with the insurance (保险) company. They told me you had bought insurance for the painting. They would pay you 200,000 dollars if the painting was stolen.
Mr Frank: What about the necklace, then?
Lestrade: You stole it as well. You tried to make sure that Zoe'd go to prison instead of you. Mr Frank, I like being a detective. My dream is to find the real criminal and protect the person who hasn't done anything wrong.
37.What is the main problem Mr. Frank reports to Lestrade?
A.He found a necklace on the floor. B.His father passed away last week.
C.His painting was stolen from the safe. D.Someone threw lots of mud to his house.

A.Make a promise easily. B.Change one's mind suddenly.
C.Form an opinion hurriedly. D.Come to a decision carefully.
39.How may Mr Frank feel according to the underlined words “With eyes and mouth wide open”?

A.What the characters are doing. B.What the characters are saying.
C.What the writer acts in the play. D.When and where each scene happens.
41.Which of the following is Lestrade's step to solve the case?
a. He had an interview with Jimmy.
b. He found some clues at the scene.
c. He checked with the insurance company.
d. He had a talk with Mr Frank about the missing painting.
e. He checked Zoe's story about someone stealing her necklace.
A.c-d-b-e-a B.e-c-a-d-b C.c-d-e-a-b D.e-d-c-b-a
37.C 38.C 39.B 40.A 41.A
【导语】本文是一篇戏剧剧本,讲述侦探Lestrade调查名画失窃案,通过线索和保险信息发现报案人Mr Frank自导自演。
【详解】37.Scene 1中Mr Frank陈述“I locked it in the safe in the living-room yesterday. When I got up this morning, however, the safe was open and the painting wasn't there!” 表明主要问题是画被盗。与选项C“His painting was stolen from the safe.”描述一致。
38.Scene 2中Lestrade说“Madam, I never jump to conclusions. I need proof.”,意为不急于下结论,需要证据。因此“jump to conclusions”指“仓促地下结论”。与选项C“Form an opinion hurriedly”意思相近。
39.Scene 2中,当Lestrade说知道小偷是谁时,“Mr Frank: (With eyes and mouth wide open) You do? Who is it?” 眼睛和嘴巴张得很大,表现出他听到Lestrade指出小偷时是惊讶的神情,选项B“Surprised”最恰当。
40.括号内如“(Rushing to Lestrade.)”和“(Showing the necklace.)”是舞台指示,说明角色正在进行的动作。选项A“What the characters are doing.”说明的最准确。
41.Lestrade先查保险公司(“Before I came here, I had checked with the insurance company.”),再与Mr Frank谈话(Scene 1全程),接着在现场发现项链和泥(“I see a necklace…Outside the open window, there's a lot of mud…”),然后询问Zoe(Scene 2中Zoe主动跑来并接受问话),最后询问Jimmy(“What about you, Jimmy?”),所以正确的顺序为选项A“c-d-b-e-a”。
D
①Every year, billions of migrating birds fly thousands of miles to reach their seasonal homes. But when birds start these long journeys, how do they know where they're going?
②In fact, birds use different clues to stay in the right direction. Some of these are familiar to us, while others are still a mystery to humans. Sight and smell are two basic clues that birds use to find their way. If birds have already migrated once, they'll likely remember familiar landmarks, such as rivers and mountain ranges. Birds that migrate over water, however, have fewer landmarks to guide them. In these situations, they might depend more on their sense of smell. One study found that when researchers blocked the noses of Scopoli's shearwaters, these seabirds could still fly over land but lost their way when flying over water.
③Birds can also use the sun and stars as guides. To do this, birds that fly during the day use a “sun compass”, which connects their view of the sun's position in the sky with their internal sense of the time of day. By putting these two pieces of information together, birds can figure out which direction they're heading.
④However, many birds actually migrate at night, which means that the position of the sun is of little use to them. In this case, birds depend on the position of the stars to find their way. They use this “star compass” by learning the position of the stars around the celestial pole, which is roughly marked by Polaris, known as the North Star.
⑤But what if the sky is cloudy, and birds can't see the sun, stars or any landmarks? That's when their more amazing senses come into play. Birds can find their way even without the sun or stars, partly thanks to a sense called magnetoreception (磁感知). This sense allows them to feel Earth's magnetic fields.
⑥It's a bit like how we use our eyes to see during the day, but at night, we might use our hands to feel our way around a dark room. Birds use different senses at different times, too. Understanding how these senses work will be very important for protecting birds in the future.
42.How does the writer begin the article?
A.By describing a scene. B.By asking a question.
C.By giving an example. D.By telling a story.
43.From the research on Scopoli's shearwaters, we can learn that ________.
A.seabirds always lose their way without landmarks
B.blocking seabirds' ears makes them lose direction
C.land is the only place where seabirds can fly safely
D.birds' sense of smell plays a role in their migration
44.Which of the following shows the correct structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
45.Why does the writer mention humans' ways of finding directions?
A.To show that humans have much better senses than birds.
B.To explain that humans need more tools to get directions.
C.To tell that humans and birds share the same living habits.
D.To help readers understand how birds use different senses.
42.B 43.D 44.A 45.D

七、阅读表达(共3小题;74题2分,75题2分;76题3分,满分7分)
请认真阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题,并将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。
Su Shi was a famous Chinese writer, poet and painter. When he was young, he read a lot of books and wrote so many good articles that people thought he was pretty talented. Because of this, he wrote a couplet (对联) for himself:
Know all the words in the world
Read all the books on the earth
An old man saw this couplet and thought, “Su Shi is so proud. It is necessary for him to learn how to be modest.” So one day, he came to Su Shi's house with a book. The book was shown to Su Shi and the old man said, “Though I have read the book many times, there are still some difficult words that I can't understand. You are a person with rich knowledge so I come to you for help.”
Su Shi took the book from the old man's hand happily. He thought he would understand the words. However, when he opened it, he saw a lot of words he didn't know. At that time, Su Shi realized that there were many other things he needed to learn. His face turned red and he said, “Now I know why you came.”
Hearing Su Shi's words, the old man smiled without saying anything. That day, they read the book together for several hours and both of them learned a lot from each other. After the old man left, Su Shi added some words to the couplet:
Work hard to know all the words in the world
Be determined to read all the books on the earth
From then on, Su Shi worked even harder. He spent more time reading books and he practised writing all the time. Day by day, he got better and became more successful.
74.Why did the old man take a book to Su Shi's house?
75.How did Su Shi's actions change after meeting the old man?
76.What do you think of this story? Based on this story, what can you learn about how to learn better?
74.Because he thought Su Shi was proud and wanted him to learn to be modest.
75.He worked even harder, spent more time reading books and practised writing all the time. 76.This story is educational. We should be modest in learning, never be satisfied with what we have known, and keep working hard to learn more.
根据文章第二段“An old man saw this couplet and thought, ‘Su Shi is so proud. It is necessary for him to learn how to be modest.'”可推知老人带书去苏轼家是为了让他学会谦虚。故填Because he thought Su Shi was proud and wanted him to learn to be modest.
75.根据文章最后一段“From then on, Su Shi worked even harder. He spent more time reading books and he practised writing all the time.”可推知苏轼见到老人后的行动变化。故填He worked even harder, spent more time reading books and practised writing all the time.
76.根据文章最后一段“Day by day, he got better and became more successful.”可推知谦虚和努力能带来进步。这是一个开放性问题,言之有理即可。

Dear John,
I am sorry to hear that something worries you a lot. I hope I can help you. Here are some of my suggestions.
You say that your parents are too strict with you and you don't know how to communicate with them. Why not try to understand them? You can write a letter to them. It seems that you are crazy about your mobile phone and often stay up late. As a result, you often feel sleepy in class and you have fallen behind others. What about developing a healthy hobby for a change? You can do some sports and live more healthily. Besides, you'd better listen carefully in class and go over what you have learnt in time. Moreover, you feel more stressed because of too many exams. I think listening to music or taking a walk can make you relaxed.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you.
Best wishes,
David
