Wander through the rose garden, admire the white garden and climb the tower for a bird’s-eye view, before dipping into the exhibition on Sackville-West’s life and work. Afterwards, check into the Milk House on the high street, a charming former coaching inn with four bedrooms and a welcoming bar and restaurant.

B
I had started my job search with high hopes, attending CV writing workshops and exploring a range of professional directions, including patent law, data analysis, research, and medical writing. I applied to positions broadly, confident I would land something soon.
But the rejections started to roll in — at least I didn’t face complete silence. The initial excitement of getting interviews soon turned into deep frustration, and I began to wonder whether the skills I had gained through my Ph.D. studies were truly valuable.
To relieve the pressure of completing my Ph.D. and the nonstop job hunt, I decided to organize a 30-mile walking challenge along the Thames Path. I hoped that being outdoors in the countryside with my walking group would help me relax and forget my worries. It was a goal I had never attempted before, but I felt motivated by this ambitious plan. Our first walk brought out 50-plus walkers, and we seemed to be off to a great start. However, by the third training walk the group’s enthusiasm had started to dim.
I was discouraged but carried on, determined to complete the challenge. Soon, though, the training walks I had carefully planned with my partner fell through. I pushed myself harder than I should have, squeezing in two tough 20-mile walks in one month and setting the stage for my hip injury.
My professional prospects weren’t looking any better, I was starting to panic about not having a job lined up, and my injury only worsened my mood. But maybe it was time to try a new path.
I previously ignored government jobs because of their difficult application process, but I decided to give them a chance. I learned how to describe my academic background properly and soon received interviews and finally two job offers. The crushing weight I had felt for months finally lifted.
At the same time, I was still wrestling with my walk plans, which I had hoped would give me enough time to recover and complete the challenge. But with the stress of my job search behind me, I could see with a clearer head that I could find satisfaction by revising my goal. I didn’t want to disappoint the small but determined group of walkers who had stuck with me, but they supported me on a compromise: a shortened walk of 14 miles, a distance I could manage comfortably.
It did not matter that I had to change plans for my walk or my job search. In the years I spent doing my Ph.D., I realized that the challenge is only part of the story. It is how you cope with setbacks that determines your route to success.
41. Why did the author decide to organize a 30-mile walking challenge?
A. To improve his physical health and prepare for a new job.
B. To relieve the pressure of finishing his Ph.D. and job hunting.
C. To encourage more people to join his walking group.
D. To complete an ambitious goal he had planned for a long time.
42. What happened to the author according to Paragraph 6?
A. The author failed to get any interview opportunities for government jobs.
B. The author found it easy to apply for government jobs at first.
C. The author got relief from long-time pressure at last.
D. The author gave up government jobs because of their difficult application process.
43. What does the underlined phrase “wrestling with” in Paragraph 7 most probably mean?
A. Struggling with. B. Fighting against. C. Giving up. D. Carrying out.
44. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The author’s experience of organizing a successful walking challenge.
B. How the author overcame difficulties in job hunting and completed his Ph.D.
C. The importance of coping with setbacks on the way to success.
D. The author’s journey of finding a suitable job after his Ph.D. studies.
B 42. C 43. A 44. C
根据第三段“To relieve the pressure of completing my Ph.D. and the nonstop job hunt, I decided to organize a 30-mile walking challenge along the Thames Path.(为了缓解完成博士学位和不停找工作的压力,我决定组织一场沿着泰晤士河步道的30英里徒步挑战)”可知,作者组织徒步挑战是为了缓解完成博士学业和找工作带来的压力。
根据第六段“I learned how to describe my academic background properly and soon received interviews and finally two job offers. The crushing weight I had felt for months finally lifted.(我学会了如何恰当地描述我的学术背景,很快就收到了面试通知,最终得到了两份工作邀约。几个月来压在我身上的沉重负担终于卸下了)”可知,作者最终拿到了工作邀约,长期的压力终于得到了缓解。
【43题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Soon, though, the training walks I had carefully planned with my partner fell through. I pushed myself harder than I should have, squeezing in two tough 20-mile walks in one month and setting the stage for my hip injury.(不过,很快,我和搭档精心计划的训练徒步就失败了。
根据最后一段“It did not matter that I had to change plans for my walk or my job search. In the years I spent doing my Ph.D., I realized that the challenge is only part of the story. It is how you cope with setbacks that determines your route to success.(我不得不改变徒步和找工作的计划,这并不重要。在我读博士的这些年里,我意识到挑战只是故事的一部分。你如何应对挫折,才决定了你通往成功的道路)”并结合全文可知,本文通过作者的经历点明主旨:通往成功的路上,应对挫折的能力至关重要。
C
Your Nose Does Help Pick Your Friends
Human beings maintain the polite fiction that we’re not constantly smelling one another. Despite our efforts to the contrary, we all have our own odors (气味), pleasant and less so, and if we are like other land mammals, our particular smell might mean something to our fellow humans.
Researchers investigating pairs of friends whose friendship “clicked” from the beginning (一拍即合) found evidence that each person’s body odor was closer to their friend’s than expected by chance. And when the researchers got pairs of strangers to play a game together, their body odors predicted whether they felt they had a good connection.
Inbal Ravreby, an olfaction (嗅觉) researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, was curious whether particularly swift friendships were connected with similarities in smells. She recruited (招募) 20 pairs of click friends. Next, the subjects were asked to stop eating foods like onions and garlic, which may affect body odor, for a few days and to bathe with unscented (无气味的) soap. Then they put on a fresh, clean, lab-provided T-shirt and slept in it so it got smelly, before handing it over to the scientist for review.
Mrs. Ravreby and her colleagues used an electronic nose to assess the smells rising from each T-shirt, and they had 25 other volunteers assess the similarity of the smells as well. They were interested to find that the friends’ odors were more similar to each other than those of strangers.
However, there are many reasons friends might smell alike — eating at the same restaurant, having a similar lifestyle, and so on — making it difficult to say if the smell or the basis for the friendship came first. To probe this, the researchers had 132 strangers, all of whom were given a T-shirt to wear first, come into the lab to play a mirroring game. Afterward, they filled out questionnaires about whether they felt a connection with their partners.
The similarities of their odors, strikingly, predicted whether both felt there had been a positive connection 71 percent of the time.
There are many mysteries for researchers to study about how our personal fragrances, in all their complexity, interact with our personal lives. Each breath of air may say more than you know.
45. We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.
A. scent is a common topic in fictions
B. we desire to live in harmony with land mammals
C. humans pretend that we don’t often smell one another
D. most of the human scents are similar to land mammals’
46. Ravreby’s first research has provided evidence that ________.
A. personal odors are key to maintaining deep friendships
B. people pick friends at least partly on the basis of body odor
C. the electronic nose smells more precisely than the human nose
D. human beings are concerned about giving off unpleasant smells
47. Why did the researchers conduct the “mirroring game” with strangers?
A. Because they can observe how strangers imitate each other’s behavior.
B. Because they required volunteers to wear scented T-shirts during the process.
C. Because researchers can rule out the influence of existing friendships in this way.
D. Because they were to measure the accuracy of electronic nose assessments.
48. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. T-shirts are commonly used as lab coats in scientific research.
B. There are few researches in the field of odor interaction at present.
C. Similar body odor may contribute to initial positive connection.
D. Friends smell alike mainly because of their similar family backgrounds.
49. The passage is centered on ________.
A. the accuracy of the assessment of smells
B. the link between odors and human relations
C. the complexity of how human beings identify smells
D. the involvement of friendships in exploring mysteries of life
50. What is the author most likely to write about in the paragraph that follows?
A. Experts’ suggestions on making use of smell in daily communication.
B. The specific ways to change one’s body odor by adjusting diet and lifestyle.
C. The differences between human body odor and that of other land mammals.
D. Further research into figuring out how body odor influences social interactions.
C 46. B 47. C 48. C 49. B 50. D
根据第一段“Human beings maintain the polite fiction that we’re not constantly smelling one another. (人类维持着一种礼貌性假象,即我们并非一直在互相闻气味)”可知,人类假装不会经常互相闻彼此的气味。
【46题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Researchers investigating pairs of friends whose friendship “clicked” from the beginning (一拍即合) found evidence that each person’s body odor was closer to their friend’s than expected by chance. (研究人员调查了那些从一开始友谊就“一拍即合”的朋友对,发现了证据表明,每个人的体味比偶然情况下预期的更接近他们朋友的体味)”以及第四段“They were interested to find that the friends’ odors were more similar to each other than those of strangers. (他们惊喜地发现,朋友之间的气味相似度要高于陌生人之间的气味相似度)”可知,Ravreby的初步研究提供了证据,表明人们至少部分地基于体味来选择朋友。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“However, there are many reasons friends might smell alike — eating at the same restaurant, having a similar lifestyle, and so on — making it difficult to say if the smell or the basis for the friendship came first. To probe this, the researchers had 132 strangers, all of whom were given a T-shirt to wear first, come into the lab to play a mirroring game. (然而,朋友气味相似的原因有很多——在同一家餐厅吃饭、有相似的生活方式等等——这使得很难说清是气味还是友谊的基础先出现。为了探究这一点,研究人员让132名陌生人——他们都先得到一件T恤穿——进入实验室玩一个镜像游戏)”可知,研究人员用陌生人做镜像游戏是为了排除已有友谊的影响,从而探究气味与友谊产生的先后顺序。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“And when the researchers got pairs of strangers to play a game together, their body odors predicted whether they felt they had a good connection. (并且当研究人员让几对陌生人一起玩游戏时,他们的体味预测了他们是否感觉彼此有良好连接)”以及第六段“The similarities of their odors, strikingly, predicted whether both felt there had been a positive connection 71 percent of the time. (令人惊讶的是,他们体味的相似性预测了双方是否感觉有积极连接,准确率达到了71%)”可推知,相似的体味可能有助于产生最初的积极连接。
【49题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,特别是标题“Your Nose Does Help Pick Your Friends(你的鼻子确实有助于挑选朋友)”以及文章围绕体味与友谊、人际关系之间联系展开的研究可知,本文主要探讨了气味与人际关系之间的联系。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“There are many mysteries for researchers to study about how our personal fragrances, in all their complexity, interact with our personal lives. Each breath of air may say more than you know. (关于我们复杂的个人气味如何与我们的个人生活相互作用,还有许多谜团供研究人员研究。每一次呼吸都可能传递比你想象更多的信息)”可推知,作者接下来最可能写关于体味如何影响社交互动的进一步研究。

Imagine a world without English majors. In the last decade, the study of English and history in college has fallen by a third. According to a recent story in The New Yorker, “The End of the English Major”, this decline is largely a result of economic factors: which departments get funded or what students earn after graduation, etc. Fields once wide open to English majors, such as teaching, academia, publishing, the arts, the media have collapsed or become less desirable. Facing huge academic debt and an uncertain job market, students may find majors like communication arts and digital storytelling more realistic.
And yet another important and discouraging part of the story is that the study of English itself may have lost its allure (吸引力), even among kids who enjoy reading. They are learning to hate the subject well before college. Both in terms of what kids are assigned and how they are instructed to read it, English class in middle and high school — now renamed as language arts, or language and literature-is often a suffering. It’s as if once schools teach kids how to read, they devote the remainder of their education to making them dread doing so.
A typical high school assignment now involves painstakingly marking up text with colored pencils in search of “literary devices”-red for imagery and diction, yellow for tone or mood, etc. Students are instructed to read even popular fiction at an extremely slow pace in the service of close-reading in unison They’re warned not to skip ahead. No one is supposed to feel excited!
When I was in public high school in the olden 80s, we read “The Red Badge of Courage” and “The Scarlet Letter,” with multiple forays (首次尝试) into Shakespeare. We were assigned Faulkner, Joyce, Conrad and Henry James, authors whose work opened my mind and tested my abilities of comprehension and interpretation.
But if anyone had suggested that I be offended by a nearly all-male reading list, I would have been hurt. Couldn’t girls read books by men just as well as boys could? At the same time, my teacher’s expectation that I could make sense of “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”, felt like a vote of confidence. Students were encouraged not to avoid or attack these books but to learn from them.
51. Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons for the decline of English major?
A. Dim job prospect. B. High education debt.
C. Unrestricted study materials. D. Undesirable study approach.
52. The underlined word “dread” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to______.
A. avoid B. fear C. ignore D. regret
53. What do we know about current English class from Paragraph 2 and 3?
A. Current teaching mode is so intense that kids may feel frightened.
B. Current teaching mode ignores the importance of reading skills.
C. Current teaching mode put little emphasis on the value of reading.
D. Current teaching mode discourage kids from reading out of interest.
54. Which of the following statements will the author mostly agree with?
A. English major is likely to disappear in the not-so-distant future.
B. Students should be encouraged to learn from classic literary works.
C. Students should be taught to read slowly in search of literary devices.
D. Females will feel disrespected if given nearly all-male books to read.
55. What is the author’s main purpose of writing this article?
A. To explain the decline of English major.
B. To criticize the current education system.
C. To introduce her own reading experience.
D. To give suggestions on the existing education mode.
C 52. B 53. D 54. B 55. A

根据第一段中“Fields once wide open to English majors, such as teaching, academia, publishing, the arts, the media have collapsed or become less desirable. Facing huge academic debt and an uncertain job market, students may find majors like communication arts and digital storytelling more realistic.(曾经向英语专业学生敞开的领域,如教学、学术界、出版业、艺术界、媒体界,已经崩溃或变得不那么令人向往。面对巨额的学业债务和不确定的就业市场,学生可能会发现像传播艺术和数字故事讲述这样的专业更现实。)”可知,英语专业衰退的原因包括黯淡的就业前景、高额的教育债务,而根据第二段“And yet another important and discouraging part of the story is that the study of English itself may have lost its allure (吸引力), even among kids who enjoy reading.(而这件事里另一个重要且令人沮丧的地方是:英语学习本身可能已经失去了吸引力,即便在那些喜欢阅读的孩子中间也是如此)”和第三段中“A typical high school assignment now involves painstakingly marking up text with colored pencils in search of “literary devices”-red for imagery and diction, yellow for tone or mood, etc. Students are instructed to read even popular fiction at an extremely slow pace in the service of close-reading in unison (完全一致地). They’re warned not to skip ahead.
根据第二段中“It’s as if once schools teach kids how to read, they devote the remainder of their education to making them dread doing so.(就好像一旦学校教孩子们如何阅读,他们就会把余下的教育都用来让他们dread这样做。)”以及第三段中“A typical high school assignment now involves painstakingly marking up text with colored pencils in search of “literary devices”-red for imagery and diction, yellow for tone or mood, etc. Students are instructed to read even popular fiction at an extremely slow pace in the service of close-reading in unison (完全一致地). They’re warned not to skip ahead. 【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“English class in middle and high school-now renamed as language arts, or language and literature-is often a suffering. It’s as if once schools teach kids how to read, they devote the remainder of their education to making them dread doing so.(中学和高中的英语课——现在改名为语言艺术或语言文学——往往是一种痛苦。就好像一旦学校教孩子们如何阅读,他们就会把余下的教育都用来让他们害怕这样做。)”以及第三段中“No one is supposed to feel excited!(根本不让学生从阅读里感受到兴奋!)”
根据倒数第二段中“We were assigned Faulkner, Joyce, Conrad and Henry James, authors whose work opened my mind and tested my abilities of comprehension and interpretation.(我们被分配了福克纳、乔伊斯、康拉德和亨利·詹姆斯的作品,这些作家的作品开阔了我的思维,考验了我的理解和诠释能力。)”以及最后一段中“Students were encouraged not to avoid or attack these books but to learn from them.(学生们被鼓励不要回避或攻击这些书,而是要从中学习。)”
根据第一段中“Imagine a world without English majors. In the last decade, the study of English and history in college has fallen by a third.(想象一个没有英语专业学生的世界。在过去的十年里,大学里的英语和历史专业学习人数下降了三分之一。)”可知,全文先介绍英语专业没落的现状与经济原因,再重点批判当下死板枯燥、扼杀兴趣的英语教学,对比自己当年优质的经典阅读课堂,核心是剖析并批判英语专业衰败背后的教育问题。故选A。
In January 2025, my weight had hit an all-time high. I was in my early twenties, but my body seemed to be in its nineties. For example, it would take me months to get over a simple cold, and only a few weeks later, I would catch it again. And I would often wake up at night, choking, because I’d stopped breathing in my sleep.
Previous to that, I had made my diet plans but ended up failing in those attempts. And I was ashamed. When my weight had hit a new record, I knew something had to be done. I eliminated any beverage (饮料) from my diet. It was a baby step, but I knew every little bit helped.
By the month of February, my pants were no longer cutting into my stomach, and it gave me the courage to step on the scale. When the needle landed on the number 240, I was determined to see that number disappear forever. I told my friends about the decision. Instead of a New Year’s goal, I told them it was just for the month February, which was to see what I could accomplish in the shortest month of the year. To my surprise, they thought it was a great idea and encouraged me.
My weight-loss plans included an intense exercise plan that I knew I could stick to for just a few short weeks. On the days when I felt lazy, I would remind myself that it was only for a month. But I had more days when I was enthusiastic. When March finally came, I was surprised to find I had lost eighteen pounds! That week I bought a few new clothes because wearing them could remind me of how far I could come. And being reminded of that was the biggest motivation for me to go on losing weight.
In March and the following months, I stuck to new plans and became lighter and lighter. Now, I still battle my weight every day. I try not to rush myself though. With patience and persistence, I witnessed what baby steps could truly accomplish.
56. What was the author’s trouble in January 2025? (no more than 10 words)
__________________________________________________________________________________________
57. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 probably mean? (1 word)
__________________________________________________________________________________________
58. Why did the author make her weight-loss plan one month instead of a year goal? (no more than 10 words)
__________________________________________________________________________________________
59. Why did the author buy some new clothes in March? (no more than 15 words)
__________________________________________________________________________________________
60. What lesson can you learn from the author’s experience of losing weight? (no more than 20 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
56. He/She had some health problems due to his/her weight.
57. Removed./ Stopped./Cut.
58. To see what he/she could accomplish in a short month.
Or: To make it easier to stick to his/her plan.
59. To remind himself/herself of his/her progress and encourage himself/herself to go on.
Or: To remind himself/herself of his/her progress and keep motivated.
60. With patience and persistence, baby steps can lead to success.(答案不唯一)
根据第一段“In January 2025, my weight had hit an all-time high. I was in my early twenties, but my body seemed to be in its nineties. For example, it would take me months to get over a simple cold, and only a few weeks later, I would catch it again. And I would often wake up at night, choking, because I’d stopped breathing in my sleep.(2025年1月,我的体重创下历史新高。我二十出头,但身体状态却如同九十岁的老人。比如,一场普通的感冒我要数月才能痊愈,短短几周后又会再次感冒。我还经常在夜间窒息醒来,因为我在睡眠中会停止呼吸)”可知,2025年1月作者的困扰是体重过高引发了诸多健康问题。
【57题详解】
考查词句猜测。根据第二段“Previous to that, I had made my diet plans but ended up failing in those attempts. And I was ashamed. When my weight had hit a new record, I knew something had to be done. I eliminated any beverage (饮料) from my diet.(在此之前,我制定过节食计划,但最终都以失败告终。我十分羞愧。当我的体重创下新高时,我知道必须做出改变。我从日常饮食中eliminated了所有饮料)”可知,作者为减重改掉喝饮料的习惯,该单词意为“去除、停止”,与Removed/Stopped/Cut等同义。
【58题详解】
考查细节理解。根据第三段“Instead of a New Year’s goal, I told them it was just for the month February, which was to see what I could accomplish in the shortest month of the year.(我没有制定新年目标,而是告诉朋友们只定二月减脂计划,想看看在一年中最短的月份里自己能完成什么)”可知,作者制定一个月的减脂计划是为了在短时间内见证自己的成果,或为了更容易坚持自己的计划。
根据第四段“That week I bought a few new clothes because wearing them could remind me of how far I could come. And being reminded of that was the biggest motivation for me to go on losing weight.(那周我买了几件新衣服,因为穿上它们能让我记起自己取得的进步,而这份提醒是我继续减重的最大动力)”可知,作者买新衣服是为了铭记进步、激励自己继续减重,或为了提醒自己取得的进展并保持动力。

Hi guys! Have you noticed the hot trend “Becoming Chinese” lately? It’s really amazing to see so many foreign friends embracing Chinese lifestyles. It shows that our cultures have a strong power to attract and connect people from all over the world.
One typical healthy way is drinking herbal tea. Herbal tea, which is made from various natural herbs, can help us stay healthy and relieve stress. Another is having regular meals at fixed times. This habit, which we believe is crucial for digestion, keeps our body in good rhythm.
In my view, cross-cultural exchange isn’t just about copying what we see. What matters is understanding the spirit behind these lifestyles. Only by doing so can we truly appreciate and learn from each other.
Thanks for your attention! I’m also eager to experience Western life to better understand Western culture.

Of all these gardens, Sissinghurst, created by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson in the 1930s, is especially notable. Laid out as a series of “rooms”, it has become an icon of garden design, with different sections unfolding around the 16th-century castle.

D. The author’s journey of finding a suitable job after his Ph.D. studies.
