一阅读理解

Its a fascinating time to study early modern English theatre. Recent advancements, such as Martin Wigginss British Drama 15331642: A Catalogue, the Lost Plays Database, and research supporting The New Oxford Shakespeare, along with works by Laurie Johnson and Callan Davies, have reshaped our understanding of the field. Now, in his new book, The Dream Factory, Daniel Swift demonstrates how this new research enables us to tell fresh stories about the period.
The book focuses on the London playhouse called the Theatre and Shakespeares working life there. Swift avoids judging the Theatre by what it later became — the Globe. Instead, he explores its commercial model, the practicalities of its architecture, and the network of people involved — from actors and investors to city officials. Swift uses established livery companies (同业工会) as models for new playhouses, viewing theatre as a professional craft, and calls the Theatre “Shakespeares schoolroom”.
Swift vividly describes the challenge of historical evidence, comparing it to a magicians trick. He uses old court documents to detail actor Richard Burbages fight over the Theatres ownership, noting Burbages energetic personality and how it linked to his acting style. Swift also argues that Brian Ellam, the Theatres main builder, mattered as much to Shakespeares art as fellow dramatist Christopher Marlowe — an idea deserving further study.
I doubt Swifts claim that the Theatre was “Londons first playhouse”. The other the Curtain might have opened earlier, and 1574 laws about London playhouses existed before the Theatre. So some of the Theatres supposed “innovations” might belong to other playhouses. Still, the Theatre was known as the first, and that reputation is part of its story. The book was also unfair to pre⁃Shakespearean literary culture, focusing on what it wasnt doing rather than what it actually achieved.
Overall Swift has written a boldly original book. It invites readers to rethink the history of theatrical imagination and to understand theatre as a genuine form of work and labour. He transforms an early modern anxiety — that plays distracted from Gods work — into a celebration of the discovery of new buildings, people and performances for dreaming.
1. Why does Swift refer to the Theatre as “Shakespeares schoolroom”?
A. It was the first school for dramatists.
B.Shakespeare taught acting classes there.
C.It was Shakespeares specialized training site.
D.It provided Shakespeare with formal education.
2. How does Swift support his argument about Richard Burbage?
A. By quoting from Shakespeares plays.
B.By analyzing historical legal records.
C.By comparing him with other actors.
D.By studying Burbages acting style.
3. According to the author, what is overlooked in Swifts book?
A. Other playhouses innovations.
B.The Theatres commercial model.
C.The importance of the Globe Theatre.
D.Pre⁃Shakespearean literary successes.
4. What can readers gain from The Dream Factory?
A. A fresh view on theatrical history.
B.An understanding of theatre as work.

D.Information on lost Shakespearean plays.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has become a crucial tool in ecological research over recent years. By analyzing water, soil, or other environmental materials for DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thousands of different species have been in an area without having to observe the actual species passing through.
To date, this eDNA process has mostly been employed to detect marine (海洋的) creatures, insects, and other wildlife. However, according to a paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, this technique could just as easily be applied to spot humans.
An international team of researchers based at the University of Florida, USA, demonstrated that human genomic (基因组的) information can be easily detected in eDNA samples collected from water, sand, and even the air. While this capability could have practical applications, such as aiding in the search for missing persons or monitoring public health, the researchers highlight significant moral concerns. These concerns include the lack of agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches (侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of genetic information being used for commercial purposes.
This issue is particularly challenging for the field of eDNA, which relies on open and easily accessible data. “It is standard practice in science to make these data publicly available. However, this also means that if human information is not screened out, anyone could access this information,” says senior author Professor David Duff, a wildlife disease genomics researcher at the University of Florida. “This raises issues around permission. Do we need to ask permission to collect these samples? Should we bring in some controls to remove human genetic data?”
“Whenever we make a technological advancement, there are both beneficial and concerning potential uses. This situation is no different,” Duffy explains. “We are raising these issues early so that policymakers and society have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.”
1. What is the primary use of eDNA in ecological research?
A. Identifying species present in an area.
B.Monitoring species evolution processes.
C.Improving living conditions for wildlife.
D.Sampling insects directly in their habitats.
2.Why is the accessibility of eDNA data a potential problem?
A. It ignores practical applications of eDNA data.
B.It may lead to unchecked genetic engineering.
C.It could result in misuse of human genetic data.
D.It raises concerns about wildlife disease research.
3. What does Duffy suggest people concerned do?
A. To develop potential applications.
B.To sample genetic information
C.To highlight advanced technology.
D.To establish appropriate regulations.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A. eDNA: A New Frontier in Ecological Monitoring
B.eDNA: Human Detection Meets Privacy Challenges
C.eDNA: A Breakthrough in Marine Research Techniques
D.eDNA: Transforming Our Comprehension of Biodiversity
