How can you leave these masterpieces unread?” The first book I picked up was Montaigne􀆳s Essays. To my surprise I discovered in the margins (页边空白) what clearly was my own faded hand⁃writing. So I was actually reading it again, but what I was rereading seemed entirely new. I also found sentences underlined. Only this time I wondered: Why did I underline this sentence? It􀆳s the next one that is important! Clearly, my way of reading the text had shifted, and I myself had changed over the years. This raised the larger question of rereading. It comes in many forms. There􀆳s voluntary rereading, the result of a willful decision to revisit a book one has admired, or a book that has left one with some unanswered questions. This kind of planned revisit could also be for confirming certain details in the text, or for checking on the moves of a given character. A devoted teacher might also wish to refresh his closeness to a work, and thus avoid teaching through the same old written notes with soporific (让人瞌睡的) effects. Contrarily, there􀆳s involuntary rereading. The original reading was either forgotten or so totally absorbed that the new chance encounter with the text produced surprise and astonishment. My reaction to the renewed reading no longer corresponded to the original experience, and I was no longer sure that I recognized myself as the same reader. Then there are what one might call subconscious (潜意识的) rereadings, those that occur without the specific act of reading, much as the memory of a tune can keep coming back to the mind without its actually being heard again. This form of remembered contact with a book can accompany us during a lifetime and continue to strengthen and shape us. Much in the same manner, we may over the years recite to ourselves poems learned by heart long ago, which have become part of our self⁃recognition. All of these ways of reading are valuable. Renewed contact with a novel or a poem can activate the search for a better knowledge of the self. The new reading, a form of revision, uncovers the change in us. The newness is not in the text. It is we who have evolved. In the process of rereading, our outlook has also been significantly changed. Rereading makes it possible for us to see the world around us, ourselves included, in a new light. 1.According to the author, what could be a purpose of voluntary rereading? A.To improve the quality of teaching. B.To learn from admirable characters. C.To collect details for writing novels. D.To help making important decisions. 2.According to Paragraph 4, what can involuntary rereading bring about? A.Unexpected reading experience. B.Total concentration on new books. C.Changed preferences for books. D.Enhanced reading skills. 3.What can be learned about subconscious rereading? A.It prevents memory from fading. B.It helps make who we are. C.It involves actual reading. D.It works best with poetry and music. 4.What could be the best title for the passage? A.Accessing Masterpieces through Rereading B.Rereading: Voluntary or Involuntary? C.Rereading: Pursuit of Truth D.Transformative Power of Rereading B When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighbourhood — all of them too young to walk — and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placed herself at the piano. She began to play for me.This school continued and became very popular.Later on, little girls of the neighbourhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very profitable occupation. My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me.When the teacher told me to stand on my toes(脚趾), I asked him why, and when he replied “Because it is beautiful, ” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff (僵硬的) and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream.I dreamed of a different dance.I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key. My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not prevented.I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young.I wonder how many parents realize that by the so⁃called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and taking away from them any chance of doing anything beautiful or original. 1.What was the author doing when her mother came home one day? A.Teaching some babies to dance. B.Directing some babies to walk. C.Getting some babies together. D.Making some babies sit still. 2.How did the author find the ballet? A.Old and unpopular. B.Ugly and unnatural. C.Graceful and original. D.Dreamlike and gymnastic. 3.What did the author think she owed her success in art to? A.The ballet classes she had attended. B.Her inborn talent and great efforts. C.The lucky chance her parents gave her. D.Her mother􀆳s support and understanding. 4.What􀆳s the main idea of the text? A.Children should be encouraged to be educated as early as possible. B.Children should be driven to develop their interest in art at an early age. C.Parents should discover and develop their young children􀆳s natural gift. D.Parents should instruct their children to decide on a promising occupation. 二语法填空 Dear James, How are you doing?
