Pingtan is the art of storytelling and ballad singing (民谣演唱) in the Suzhou dialect (方言). It mixes Pinghua and Tanci to form a new art. Pinghua is just talking while Tanci is talking and singing. Pinghua became popular during the Qing Dynasty. With a folding fan and a gavel (木槌) in hand, a performer told stories of historical people and events. By the mid-16th century, Tanci, or “story-singing” appeared in areas around Suzhou. In the next century, storytellers began to mix the two art forms into a new one. This new style later became known as Suzhou Pingtan. In 1938, people in Shanghai could listen to more than 100 different Pingtan programs on the radio. Pingtan is usually performed by two people—a man and a woman. The man often appears in long blue or grey clothes. The woman wears a more colorful qipao. All they need is a table and two chairs. One performer carries a three-stringed zither (三弦扁琴) and the other plays the pipa. Traditional stories, love stories, classic novels and historical events are common themes in Pingtan programs. A sad song can make us cry, while an upbeat pop song can make us want to dance. But have you ever wondered why? Scientists have been studying the connection between music and emotions for years, and their findings are fascinating. Music has the power to affect our brains chemically. When we listen to music we enjoy, our brain releases dopamine, a chemical that makes us feel happy and relaxed. This is why listening to your favorite song can feel like a reward. The tempo (speed) and key of the music also play a role. Fast tempos and major keys often make people feel energetic and cheerful. Slow tempos and minor keys tend to bring out feelings of sadness or calmness. Different types of music can serve different purposes. If you are feeling stressed, listening to classical music or nature sounds can lower your heart rate and blood pressure. If you are tired, rock or hip-hop music can give you a burst of energy. Many students listen to music while studying to help them focus, although experts suggest that instrumental music is better for concentration than songs with lyrics, which can be distracting. Music therapy (疗法) is now a recognized field. Therapists use music to help patients with mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. It is also used to help people recover from strokes or brain injuries. Music is not just entertainment; it is a powerful tool for healing and well-being. So, the next time you put on your headphones, remember that you are doing more than just listening—you are taking care of your mind. 14.According to Paragraph 2, what usually makes people feel energetic? His mom wanted to help him get better, so she took him to a piano show. They got seats in the front row of the big hall. Soon, the mom happened to meet a friend and started talking to her. She didn’t notice the boy had quietly left his seat. The show started right at 8 o’clock. When everyone looked up, they were shocked—there was the boy sitting on the piano chair, playing happily. The mom was just about to ask him to come back when the pianist walked onto the stage. He spoke softly to the boy, “Don’t stop. Keep playing.” Then he sat down next to the boy and played with him. Together, they made beautiful music that filled the hall. After the show ended, the mom went to find the pianist. “Thank you for giving my son this special time,” she said. “At first, I thought you’d surely be angry with him.” The pianist smiled and answered, “All of us need support. And your child is very talented.” From then on, the boy started to practice harder than before. 10 years later he met the pianist again… 18.Why was everyone shocked when they looked up? (不超过10个词) 19.What did the pianist do with the boy? (不超过10个词) 20.What could have happened at the end of this story? Most of the time, viewers are familiar with the stories. But different Pingtan programs have different styles of music and songs. They also have their own personal changes. The Suzhou dialect is widely regarded as one of the sweetest tones in China. 10.What can we learn about Pingtan from Paragraph 1? A.Pingtan is part of Pinghua. B.Pingtan mainly focuses on talking. A.Slow tempos and minor keys. B.Soft voices and sad lyrics. C.Fast tempos and major keys. D.Loud noises and strong beats. 15.What does the writer suggest for students who study while listening to music? A.Listen to songs with meaningful lyrics. B.Choose instrumental music. C.Listen to rock music loudly. D.Avoid music completely. 16.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4? A.Music is only for entertainment. B.Music can be used as a form of therapy. C.Music causes depression and anxiety. D.Music is too distracting for medical patients. 17.What is the author’s attitude towards music? A.Negative—it is a waste of time. B.Neutral—it has both good and bad sides. C.Positive—it benefits our mental health. D.Uncertain—more research is needed. 第二节 阅读下面短文,并用英语回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。 F A little boy really loved playing the piano. His mom wanted to help him get better, so she took him to a piano show.
