Tobie Spears has always loved travelling. Upon graduating from high school, she set off with a friend to explore Europe. The journey was a precious life lesson. Spears realized that meaningful change requires not great efforts, but modest time and sincere care for others.
Determined to make a difference with her own hands, Spears and her new husband drove south through Mexico to Guatemala. Possessing beautiful natural scenery, the land has been inhabited by local people for thousands of years. During her stay, she found the cheerful locals were trapped in tough and backward living conditions.
Renting a village house, the couple experienced far more primitive life than at home. Local villagers suffered from food shortages, poor education and a lack of sustainable living ways. Spears wondered what she could do that would make a lasting change. “We didn’t want to just give them a few things and go home,” she says. “We want them to be able to sustain themselves.”
The couple launched practical educational programs covering three key areas: nutrition, self-sustainability and income-generation. They taught villagers useful life skills like operating sewing machines and building high-yield gardens. Though making steady progress was challenging with only four visits a year, their efforts eventually paid off.
Gradually, local villagers embraced these new practical skills and made steady progress. They used vertical (垂直的) gardening to boost vegetable output, and skilled female tailors earned a living by sewing. To expand charitable work, Spears founded the nonprofit Be Humanitarian. It attracted more sponsors and volunteers, forming a warm and supportive community in the village.
Spears’ children also joined the voluntary work actively as her family grew. Volunteers visit the village four times a year to guide and help local villagers in need. As volunteer Emery put it, the experience totally changed his life outlook, proving true happiness lies in sincere interpersonal relationships.
4. What did Spears learn from her first European trip?
A. Great efforts are needed to realize big dreams.
B. Small kindness can bring meaningful changes.
C. Travelling can enrich one’s life experience greatly.
D. Young people should travel to broaden their horizons.
5. Why did Spears refuse to provide temporary help for locals?
A. Temporary help was not accepted by the villagers.
B. The local living conditions were too tough to bear.
C. She lacked enough time for long-term voluntary work.
D. It could not solve the villagers’ fundamental problems.
6. What does the underlined word “embraced” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Accepted. B. Doubted. C. Abandoned. D. Promoted.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Traveller: A Life-Transformed Volunteer
B. Be Humanitarian: A Popular Nonprofit Group
C. Travel: A Wonderful Way to Explore the World
D. Village Service: Voluntary Work in the Countryside
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. A

We’ve long known that aerobic (有氧的) exercise helps people live longer, and now strength training is being recognized for the same life-extending effect. A Harvard-led study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that people who do up to two hours of strength training each week over many years may lower their risk of early death from several major diseases, such as heart disease and nerve-related illnesses.
Researchers analyzed data from three large studies involving 147,374 middle-aged or older adults, about 79 percent of whom were women. The participants were tracked for as long as 30 years. They reported how often and how intensely they exercised, including resistance training like weight lifting and body-weight movements, as well as aerobic activities including fast walking, cycling and running. Records of deaths from all causes were also collected during the study period. Experts noted that the large sample size and long follow-up time made the research results highly reliable.
The findings showed that those who took part in 90 to 119 minutes of resistance training per week were 13 percent less likely to die of any cause than those who did no strength training at all. They also faced a 19 percent lower risk of death from heart-related disease and a 27 percent lower risk of dying from neurological diseases such as dementia. Even a moderate amount of such training was found to bring noticeable health gains, regardless of age or gender.
Aerobic exercise by itself remained a strong factor in lengthening lifespan (寿命). However, the most significant health benefits appeared when resistance training was combined with aerobic exercise. People who took both types of exercise regularly were up to 45 percent less likely to die during the study than those who did little aerobic activity and no resistance training. The study provides strong evidence that adding strength training to daily routines can greatly contribute to healthier and longer lives.
8. What may help reduce the risk of early death?
A. Occasional light exercise in a week. B. Focusing on certain outdoor activities.
C. Reducing daily exercise to a low level. D. Proper strength training on a regular basis.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Possible ways to improve exercise effects. B. Health gains from proper resistance training.
C. Factors connected with different death risks. D. Common ways of recording exercise information.
10. How may people gain better exercise benefits according to the text?
A. By combining different exercise forms. B. By increasing exercise time gradually.
C. By focusing on one kind of exercise. D. By choosing less energetic activities.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward strength training?
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Supportive. D. Cautious.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

The number of chicks in the Coulman Island emperor penguin population decreased by around 69% in 2025 compared with 2024, according to a study published in Communications Earth & Environment. The authors suggest that a large iceberg, which grounded off the island between July 2025 and January 2026, likely restricted the colony’s access to important feeding areas, demonstrating that individual iceberg movements may affect breeding (繁殖) success even when overall sea ice conditions appear favourable.
During the breeding season (between June and January), emperor penguins require both stable sea ice and reliable access to open water food sources so that adults can feed their immature chicks. Overall sea ice conditions are known to affect breeding success, but previous observations have suggested that individual large icebergs may also have an effect.
Jeong-Hoon Kim and colleagues conducted two aerial field surveys of the emperor penguin population on Coulman Island, Antarctica, in November and December 2025. They counted 6,658 live chicks — approximately 69% fewer than both the 2024 count and the 2017 — 2024 mean count (平均计数).
During field observations, the authors observed a large iceberg grounded 3 — 5 km north of the colony. Satellite imagery showed that this iceberg (about 13.9 km long and 4.0 km wide) had collapsed in March 2025, approached the colony in July, and finally grounded on 28 July, during the hatching season. The authors combined the iceberg’s positional data with a detailed model of its shape, obtained from aerial imagery collected during the survey. They suggest that the iceberg’s steep (陡峭的) southern face and its grounded position likely increased the distance penguins needed to travel to find food from around 9.3 km in 2024 to approximately 14.9 km in 2025. They propose that this increased distance contributed to the reduced breeding success in 2025.
The authors note that the study only covers a single season and that the findings are observational. However, they also suggest that while such iceberg events are unpredictable and typically temporary, future research into emperor penguin breeding should consider the role these events can play alongside broader trends.
12. What is special about the 2025 emperor penguin breeding failure?
A. It was caused by unstable sea-ice conditions.
B. It resulted from multiple environmental threats.
C. It occurred despite good general sea ice conditions.
D. It led to an immediate drop in adult penguin numbers.
13. What directly caused the sharp drop in young penguins on Coulman Island in 2025?
A. Shortage of suitable breeding grounds.
B. Frequent extreme weather in Antarctica.
C. The lack of food in the open water nearby.
D. A grounded iceberg increasing feeding distance.
14. What can be inferred about the study?
A. It covered the entire breeding process.
B. It confirmed icebergs as the primary threat.
C. Its conclusion requires longer-term evidence.
D. Its analysis neglected overall sea ice impacts.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To compare sea ice conditions across years.
B. To describe the lifestyle of emperor penguins.
C. To appeal for urgent protection of emperor penguins.
D. To present a new study on penguin breeding outcomes.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. D

54. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a shy and unconfident girl who always feared public attention. I preferred hiding in crowds and never volunteered for any school activity. Even in PE class, I would fall behind on purpose to avoid running in front of my classmates. The thought of being watched and judged made my heart race with anxiety.
One day, our teacher announced an upcoming school fun-run competition, encouraging every student to challenge themselves. To my great surprise, my PE teacher Ms. Li signed me up without hesitation. I was totally shocked and instantly wanted to refuse. I knew I was slow and afraid of running in public. I was firmly convinced that I would be the last one and become someone everyone laughed at.
After class, I gathered up my courage and went to talk to Ms. Li, hoping to quit the competition. Sensing my nervousness and self-doubt, Ms. Li smiled softly and patted me on the shoulder. “Running is never about winning others. It is about beating your former self,” she said gently. Her words struck me deeply. For the first time, I realized I had been limiting myself with unnecessary fear.
From that day on, I decided to give it a try. Every evening after school, I practiced running alone on the playground. Tiredness flooded my body, and my legs often ached badly. However, whenever I wanted to give up, Ms. Li’s words rang in my mind and pushed me forward.
Finally, the day of the running competition arrived. Standing at the starting line, my hands trembled and folded uneasily and my knees trembled slightly. My heart raced wildly as I stared at the track ahead, a mix of fear and anticipation filling my chest. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing breath, and silently repeated Ms. Li’s words to calm my nerves.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With the signal about to start, my heart beat faster and I fixed my eyes on the runway ahead.

When I crossed the finish line, warm applause broke out around me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 With the signal about to start, my heart beat faster and I fixed my eyes on the runway ahead. The starting whistle echoed, and all runners dashed forward. I didn’t chase to keep up with others at first, just followed my own steady pace. Halfway through, tiredness almost dragged me down. But I spotted Ms. Li standing by the track, waving and cheering for me loudly. All my tiredness and fear faded away, and I just focused on moving my legs forward step by step.
When I crossed the finish line, warm applause broke out around me. I did rank the second to last. My classmates crowded around, handing me a bottle of water and praising my persistence. Ms. Li walked over and hugged me, saying I had already beaten my former self. That day I didn’t get any prize, but I gained far more than a trophy: I walked out of my shell of timidity, and learned that the biggest opponent in life is never others, but the cowardly self in our own mind.

C. Supportive. D. Cautious.
