Carrying a worn canvas bag and a small notebook, Yue Shuchen moves cautiously along the rugged mountain trail. He bends to pick up rubbish left by tourists, runs his fingers over weathered bricks to check for cracks, and carefully records every detail in his notebook. For nearly thirty years, this has been his routine patrol (巡逻) on the Malingguan Great Wall in Xingtai, Hebei.
Yue grew up right at the foot of the ancient wall. In 1997, he caught thieves attempting to remove ancient stone relics and immediately reported the incident to local authorities. “The Great Wall once protected our ancestors. Now it is our turn to protect it,” he told reporters. Inspired by this belief, he made up his mind to devote himself to relic protection and became an official Great Wall guardian in 2013.
He covers over ten kilometers on foot two or three times every week, regardless of wind or rain. One rainy afternoon, he slipped on muddy stones and injured his leg, yet he finished the whole journey without pause. He repeatedly persuades tourists not to carve words onto bricks. Many local villagers think the unpaid work is pointless and try to talk him out of it, but he never backs down.
When interviewed, Yue said emotionally, “The Great Wall is like an old friend of mine. As long as I can still walk, I will keep patrolling.” Ordinary as he is, his decades-long devotion shows that firm faith and a strong sense of responsibility can turn a common farmer into an extraordinary cultural guardian.
4. What is included in Yue’s daily patrol work?
A. Repairing broken bricks of the Great Wall. B. Collecting litter and checking wall conditions.
C. Stopping tourists to pick up rubbish. D. Guiding visitors around the scenic spot.
5. What made Yue decide to protect the Great Wall?
A. His desire for a well-paid job. B. His worry about tourist damage.
C. His wish for official recognition. D. His witness of a relic theft.
6. What does paragraph 3 try to tell us?
A. Yue holds his post despite various difficulties. B. Yue successfully stops tourists’ misbehavior.
C. Villagers persuade Yue to quit his patrol. D. Bad weather affects Yue’s patrol seriously.
7. Which word can best describe Yue?
A. Generous and outgoing. B. Ambitious and strict.
C. Devoted and persistent. D. Cautious and wealthy.

“The most difficult subjects,” novelist Leo Tolstoy once wrote, “can be explained to the least knowledgeable man, but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man who is firmly convinced that he already knows it.”
Until recently, I would have agreed. Psychologists have long believed that many people are resistant to opinion change and that little can be done. Fortunately, a new study led by psychologist Stephanie Dolbier suggests that open-mindedness can be developed.
Open-minded thinking improves decision-making and protects us from false beliefs, but it’s not easy to practise. Admitting we were wrong not only feels embarrassing but challenges our identity that is built around our beliefs. To protect our ego (自我), the brain engages in “motivated reasoning” — searching for evidence that favours our assumptions, even if that relies on poor logic and misinformation.
Maintaining an open mind starts with managing that mental discomfort through emotional awareness. Research shows that people who can describe their feelings in detail — rather than simply labelling them as “good” or “bad” — are better able to consider different perspectives. If I’m emotionally aware, I might realise that, instead of feeling angry at someone for not seeing my point, I’m actually frustrated at my own inability to get an idea across, or scared of seeming foolish. The realisation that I’m letting emotions get in the way of understanding others may encourage me to consider my argument more critically and potentially change my mind.
The role of emotional awareness explains why mindfulness encourages open-minded thinking. By paying attention to our inner weather, mindfulness helps us recognise emotional reactions and avoid letting them shape our judgments. If mindfulness doesn’t appeal, we can try role-playing and adopt a scientist mindset, approaching disagreements objectively and analytically. Another useful technique is self-affirmation, which reminds us that our self-worth does not depend on being right about a single issue.
Dolbier emphasises that these techniques require further testing. Still, they offer a useful starting point, and I’ll certainly try some of them the next time my beliefs are challenged.
8. What do Leo Tolstoy’s words imply?
A. Intelligence guarantees learning.
B. Fixed opinions are hard to change.
C. Knowledge belongs to everyone.
D. Difficult subjects are easy to explain.
9. What can we learn about “motivated reasoning”?
A. It prevents false beliefs.
B. It enhances decision-making.
C. It stresses logical thinking.
D. It produces biased arguments.
10. Which of the following is the key to managing the mental discomfort?
A. Comparing different ideas.
B. Expressing clear views.
C. Identifying specific feelings.
D. Releasing negative emotions.
11. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Causes of emotional discomfort.
B. Ways to avoid disagreements.
C. Benefits of emotional awareness.
D. Strategies to develop open-mindedness.
D
Digital technology, ranging from smartphones and laptops to learning apps and AI tools, can effectively assist students’ studies and daily lives. However, uncontrolled use produces numerous negative impacts. It distracts students’ attention, shortens sleep time, reduces physical activity and weakens independent learning skills. Importantly, these problems stem from improper usage rather than the technology itself.
Unregulated technology use greatly lowers students’ learning efficiency and quality. Classroom distraction stands out as the most common issue. According to OECD’s PISA research, 30 percent of students get distracted by digital devices during most math lessons, which leads to poorer academic performance. To make matters worse, many students depend heavily on online search results and AI answers. They abandon key steps for deep learning, including careful reading, independent thinking, problem analysis and mistake correction. As a result, although their homework appears finished, they fail to build solid, in-depth knowledge.
According to a 2025 CDC (疾控中心) report, excessive screen time does great harm to teenagers’ physical and mental health. Late-night gaming and social media use can seriously affect teenagers’ sleep. Meanwhile, prolonged screen use takes up time for outdoor sports, walking and daily exercise, leaving students in poor physical condition. In addition, social media exposes teenagers to peer comparison and the fear of missing out, causing invisible mental pressure. A 2025 CDC analysis also proves that too much non-school screen time is closely associated with teenagers’ poor sleep, lack of exercise and negative mental states.
Thankfully, students can avoid these risks by developing scientific daily routines. Before studying, they need to keep phones away from desks, turn off distracting notifications and use only essential digital tools. Before bedtime, they should quit all online entertainment by a fixed time and charge their phones outside the bedroom. It is also advisable to finish exercise and housework before enjoying screen time. Instead of rejecting technology completely, proper management enables technology to better support students’ learning and healthy growth.
12. What does the word “unregulated” underlined in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Unprotected. B. Unfinished. C. Uncontrolled. D. Unchanged.
13. What can we infer from the 2025 CDC analysis?
A. Social media use reduces teenagers’ mental stress.
B. Outdoor exercise removes screen-caused harms.
C. Staying up late mainly leads to poor health.
D. Off-school screen time brings about health problems.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards digital technology?
A. Objective. B. Supporting. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Long screen time harms teens’ bodies and minds.
B. Proper digital use brings teens great benefits.
C. Digital tools are widely used in teens’ study.
D. Digital technology brings harm yet solutions exist.

Researchers at Duke University and Georgetown University found that study participants who received notifications set ___37___ (arrive) only three times a day reported better moods, higher productivity, and greater feelings of control over their phones. In comparison with participants who received notifications as usual and another group of participants who received no notifications at all, study participants also unlocked their phones ___38___ (often).
In total, 237 smartphone owners living in India participated in the study. Participants downloaded an Android app developed by the researchers that regulated ___39___ delivery of phone notifications. 47.
One of my tutors once asked our class to recall the moment when we felt the most alive, the moment we believed we held the world in our hands. Some talked about winning a big competition or receiving a precious award. Others described a trip to a faraway place or a proud achievement in their hobbies. My answer, however, made the class burst into soft laughter. It was the day I first learned to ride a bike at the age of fourteen. I didn’t mind their giggles, because I knew the story behind that ordinary day was far from simple.
My elder brother and I had never been close. We were like two strangers living under the same roof, always clashing over small things like who would take the last piece of cake or how to share the living room on weekends. I used to think he was cold and uninterested in me, and I tried to keep my distance to avoid arguments. Gradually, we fell into a silent routine: we ate separately, studied in different rooms, and never shared our feelings. Deep down, I felt lonely and hoped we could be friends, but I didn’t know how to break the ice.
Last spring, my brother gave me a second-hand bike as a birthday gift. It was not shiny or new, but it had a blue frame and a comfortable seat, which made me feel a little warm inside. However, excitement soon turned into frustration when I realized I had no idea how to ride it. My parents were busy with work and couldn’t teach me, so I decided to practice alone in the park near my home. Day after day, I tried to keep balance, but I kept falling off the bike, scraping my knees and palms. On a windy afternoon, after another hard fall, I threw the bike on the grass and burst into tears, feeling helpless and disappointed.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Just then, my brother walked out of the park gate.

根据第二段“In 1997, he caught thieves attempting to remove ancient stone relics and immediately reported the incident to local authorities. “The Great Wall once protected our ancestors. Now it is our turn to protect it,” he told reporters. Inspired by this belief, he made up his mind to devote himself to relic protection and became an official Great Wall guardian in 2013.(1997年,他发现盗贼试图盗取古代石质文物,立即向当地有关部门报告了此事。“长城曾保护过我们的祖先,现在轮到我们来守护它了,”他对记者说。受到这一信念的启发,他下定决心投身于文物保护事业,并于2013年成为官方长城守护员。)”可知,亲眼目睹了文物被盗的事件让岳决定保护长城。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“He covers over ten kilometers on foot two or three times every week, regardless of wind or rain. One rainy afternoon, he slipped on muddy stones and injured his leg, yet he finished the whole journey without pause. He repeatedly persuades tourists not to carve words onto bricks. Many local villagers think the unpaid work is pointless and try to talk him out of it, but he never backs down.(他每周都会徒步两三趟,每趟行程十余公里,风雨无阻。一个下雨的午后,他踩在泥泞的石块上滑倒摔伤了腿,却依旧坚持走完全程,一刻没有停歇。他一次次劝导游客不要在砖石上刻字。不少当地村民觉得这份没有报酬的工作毫无意义,都劝他放弃,可他从未退缩。)”可知,第三段主要讲的是尽管面临各种困难,岳仍坚持岗位。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ordinary as he is, his decades-long devotion shows that firm faith and a strong sense of responsibility can turn a common farmer into an extraordinary cultural guardian.(尽管他平凡,但他数十年如一日的奉献表明,坚定的信念和强烈的责任感,能够将一名普通的农民转变为一位非凡的文化守护者。)”
C

根据第一段“The most difficult subjects,” novelist Leo Tolstoy once wrote, “can be explained to the least knowledgeable man, but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man who is firmly convinced that he already knows it.(小说家列夫・托尔斯泰曾写道:最难的学问,也能讲给最无知的人听懂;但对于一个笃定自己早已明白的聪明人,最简单的道理也无法让他理解。)”
根据第三段“To protect our ego (自我), the brain engages in “motivated reasoning” — searching for evidence that favours our assumptions, even if that relies on poor logic and misinformation.(为了维护自我,大脑会进行“动机性推理”:只寻找支持自身固有看法的证据,哪怕这些证据逻辑薄弱、信息不实。)”
根据第四段“Maintaining an open mind starts with managing that mental discomfort through emotional awareness. Research shows that people who can describe their feelings in detail — rather than simply labelling them as “good” or “bad” — are better able to consider different perspectives.(拥有开放心态,首先要通过情绪觉察来处理这种心理不适感。研究表明,能够细致描述自身感受,而非简单把情绪归为“好”或“坏”的人,更能接纳不同观点。)”可知,处理心理不适的关键是分辨具体的情绪感受。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“The role of emotional awareness explains why mindfulness encourages open-minded thinking. By paying attention to our inner weather, mindfulness helps us recognise emotional reactions and avoid letting them shape our judgments. If mindfulness doesn’t appeal, we can try role-playing and adopt a scientist mindset, approaching disagreements objectively and analytically. Another useful technique is self-affirmation, which reminds us that our self-worth does not depend on being right about a single issue.(情绪觉察的作用能够解释为何正念思考有助于培养开放包容的思维。通过关注自身内心的情绪起伏,正念能帮助我们察觉自身的情绪反应,避免被情绪左右判断。如果正念训练不适合自己,我们可以尝试角色扮演,以科研者的心态客观、理性地看待分歧。另一种实用方法是自我肯定,它提醒我们:自我价值并不取决于在某一件事上必须占理。)”可知,整段列举多种培养开放心态的方法,所以段落主旨为培养开放思维的各类策略。
C 13. D 14. A 15. D

Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
If you’re chained to your phone and unhappy about it, you might consider receiving smartphone notifications (通知) at set intervals throughout the day ___36___ as they come.
Respondents also were asked to report in a daily diary various measures including: “concentration, distraction, stress, anxiety, mood, productivity, social connectedness, and work enjoyment — as well as phone-specific outcomes: feeling of being interrupted by notifications, sense of missing out on notifications, sense of control over phone, social pressure to respond to others, phone overuse, and intentional phone checking.” Participants ___40___ (inform) that they could always access their notifications by opening individual apps. And the authors give their further explanation, “In other words, we only controlled the delivery of notifications (e.g., to the lock screen), rather than preventing messages from being accessed at all.”
“Compared to those in the control condition (notifications as usual), participants ___41___ notifications were set three-times-a-day felt more attentive, productive, in a better mood, and in greater control of their phones,” the researchers write, ___42___ (note) that this group also reported lower stress levels. “In contrast, participants who did not receive notifications at all harvested few of those benefits, but experienced higher levels of anxiety and ‘fear of missing out’ (FoMO).” They’ve released the app, called Daywise, for personal use through Google Play. But Daywise ___43___ (be only) available on the Android platform so far. “___44___ the Android app, iOS (short for Internetwork Operating System) doesn’t allow third party developers to control notifications to a degree we’d like for setting to work in a nuanced (细微的) manner,” Daywise creator Ranjan Jagannathan told us. “____45____ we’re able to do this flexibly enough, we will not be able to build a powerful version of Daywise for iOS. We are working for it.”

此处为固定搭配set sth. to do sth.,意为“设置某物做某事”,本句中set to arrive only three times a day为过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰notifications。
上文“study participants who received notifications set _____ (arrive) only three times a day reported better moods, higher productivity, and greater feelings of control over their phones”提到每日三次接收通知的参与者情绪更好、工作效率更高、对手机掌控感更强,因此他们解锁手机的频率比另外两组更低,要用比较级less修饰副词often,表示“频率更低”,故填less often。
时间状语so far意为“到目前为止”,是现在完成时的标志词,主语是单数Daywise,故填has only been。
结合后文“we will not be able to build a powerful version of Daywise for iOS”可知,此处构成not...until...(直到……

Version 1:
I am strongly in favour of online fitness. From my perspective, it is an efficient way to stay fit. Online fitness makes it convenient for us to work out anytime and anywhere as it allows us to arrange schedule flexibly. It also offers a wide variety of workouts for people with different fitness needs. Moreover, the online platform makes it easy for fitness lovers to get engaged and encouraged. This approach greatly arouses our interest and motivation and helps us to lead an active lifestyle. In conclusion, online fitness is an advisable option.
Version 2:
I am not convinced that online fitness is a good choice for people who seek effective workout. The main disadvantage lies in the lack of in-person guidance as online fitness relies on video or live-streaming instructions. Also the limitation of equipment is a challenge for home exercisers who desire the same training effects as the instructors on line. To make things worse, possible technical problems will affect the flow of work out, which spoils the fun and damages peoples enthusiasm. Therefore, I would go to the gym for exercise.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Just then, my brother walked out of the park gate.

Just then, my brother walked out of the park gate. He saw me sitting on the grass, tears rolling down my face, and the bike lying beside me. To my surprise, he didn’t laugh at me. Instead, he walked over quietly, sat down next to me, and patted my shoulder gently. “Don’t give up,” he said in a soft voice. “I’ll teach you.” He helped me stand up, adjusted the bike’s seat, and held the back of the bike firmly. We started slowly, with him guiding me and telling me to keep my balance and pedal steadily. He also shared that he once fell countless times when he first learned cycling.
I rode slowly at first, but soon I gained confidence. I felt the bike become steady, and when I turned around, I found my brother had let go of the bike. “I did it!” I shouted with excitement, riding forward freely. My brother stood there, smiling brightly at me. At that moment, the distance between us disappeared. All the past quarrels and cold silence seemed to fade away. That day, I not only learned to ride a bike but also broke the ice with my brother. It became my most precious memory, a moment full of warmth and growth.
