Composition of E-Waste
Nowadays, e-waste is one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams. Waste electronics contain harmful substances like lead and mercury, posing serious environmental and health risks.
However, e-waste also represents a valuable “urban mine”. It holds an estimated 31 million tonnes of metals, 17 million tonnes of plastics, and 14 million tonnes of glass. One tonne of circuit boards can contain up to 800 times more gold than a tonne of gold-bearing rocks. Despite this, less than 1% of rare earth elements are recycled.
Recycled e-waste is a valuable resource for sustainable manufacturing (制造业). Its metals, e.g. gold and copper, are reused in electronics, vehicles, and renewable energy systems. Recovered plastics find new life in durable products, while glass is processed into building materials. This circular (循环的) approach cuts energy use, reduces mining demand, and transforms waste into industrial resources, supporting both the economy and the environment.
The e-waste management market is projected to more than double by 2027. While 81 countries have adopted Extended Producer Responsibility laws, collection rates still fall behind policy goals.
To improve recycling, governments should strengthen EPR laws, and invest in facilities. Institutions can promote research and public awareness. Individuals should properly drop off e-waste at collection points, fix items rather than throw them away, and support brands with strong environmental commitments.
1. What percentage do screens and cables account for in all e-waste compositions?
A. 12%. B. 14%. C. 17%. D. 60%.
2. What is a key advantage of e-waste compared to natural mines?
A. It contains a greater variety of rare elements.
B. It provides more recoverable non-metals.
C. It can be richer in precious metals.
D. It works better as building materials.
3. What is suggested for individuals to help recycle e-waste?
A. Invest in formal recycling facilities.
B. Launch public awareness campaigns.
C. Set clear personal take-back plans.
D. Choose repair over replacement.
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. D

Sent through the washing. Eaten by insects. Bitten by a dog. These are just some of the ways that books can be damaged, as seen on a recent afternoon at the Weissman Preservation Center.
Students in “Texts in Transition,” a GenEd class taught by Professors Ann Blair and Leah Whittington, were visiting the Weissman Preservation Center to witness preservation firsthand. Their course explores how written works are passed down through time.
Conservators play a vital role in this process. Their work — repairing torn manuscripts (手稿), reducing insect damage, and so on — ensures the survival of texts from the ancient to the present. At the Weissman Preservation Center, students learn what happens behind the scenes when conservators step in to keep materials usable and preserve them for the future. “Harvard Library not only has remarkable materials gathered over generations but also expert staff who allow students to experience these treasures up close and from new views,” said Blair, a professor in the History Department.
As students handled the papers, ink and paints before them, they studied the evidence manuscripts offer researchers and the complexities of preservation. “What happens when the original material is no longer available?” one student asked. “Any treatment we apply must not harm the object and can be restored,” explained Eliza, Senior Paper Conservator. “We always respect the integrity of the materials and only make changes that can be reversed, which is important in our conservation standards.”
The class concluded with a close-looking exercise. Using angle lights and pocket microscopes, students examined manuscripts on the table, amazed at iridescent (泛着虹彩的) inks of the pages. One student, enthusiastic about her discoveries, set up her phone to photograph the scene. Turning to senior rare book conservator Jody Beenk, she declared, “I think I have found my career.”

Nearly 30% of U. S. children have a diagnosed allergy (过敏), suffering from symptoms such as hives, sneezing, or even life-threatening anaphylaxis. Large studies have confirmed that introducing potential food allergens within the first year of life significantly minimizes the danger of developing allergies later.
A decade ago, doctors recommended delaying common food allergens until after the first few years. This view changed in 2015 when the LEAP study provided strong evidence that introducing peanuts to infants (婴儿) around four months old can lower peanut allergy risk by up to 80%. Follow-up studies on eggs, cow’s milk, and multiple common allergens showed similar benefits. Today, experts strongly recommend early introduction. Priya Katari, a pediatric allergist, suggests introducing all common allergens — egg, milk, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, and sesame — at four to six months of age, when the child can sit upright and swallow safely without choking.
This recommendation applies to most children, including those with a family history of allergies. However, there are two exceptions: children with severe eczema should be tested for allergies before food introduction, and children with a known egg allergy should be tested especially before trying peanut butter. Otherwise, serious reactions after first exposure are rare in infants under one year, though possible. Parents can start with a tiny amount, such as a quarter-teaspoon of thinned peanut butter, monitor for ten minutes, and then offer a full serving of two teaspoons.
Once introduced, the allergen must remain in the child’s diet regularly. Peanut currently has specific guidelines: two teaspoons three times a week. Experts agree that just a taste may not build tolerance; taking them at a regular basis is essential. Parents need not worry about exact amounts but should ensure a varied diet including fruits, vegetables, and protein. As Martha Hartz from Mayo Clinic advises, “Whenever you introduce solid food, go ahead and introduce whatever your family eats.”
8. What can be inferred about the LEAP study?
A. It suggested delaying all allergens. B. It focused mainly on eggs and milk.
C. It overturned previous medical advice. D. It was the first study on food allergies.
9. Which group needs allergy tests before food introduction?
A. Children with family allergy history. B. Children already exposed to peanuts.
C. Children who can sit upright and swallow. D. Children with severe eczema or egg allergy.
10. What do experts suggest about maintaining tolerance?
A. Regular exposure is vital. B. Exact amounts matter most.
C. A single taste is enough for life. D. Peanut butter should be avoided.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Infants should avoid peanuts until age three.
B. Early introduction reduces the risks of allergies.
C. Delaying allergens until after the first year is advised.
D. Allergy tests are required for children before solid foods.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B

Artificial islands may seem like a modern invention, more commonly linked to Dubai and China, but in Scotland, humans have been building them for thousands of years. Using new technology, scientists have now discovered the wooden and stone foundations of the Loch Bhorgastail crannog (人工岛), which was built many thousands of years ago.
The team used a technique called stereophotogrammetry (立体摄影测量技术). It creates a 3D model from photos taken around an object. Most experts would use drones for this, because a drone’s path can be easily tracked by satellite navigation when building the 3D image. But many of the important features of the crannog lie under shallow water, which is not ideal for capturing the clear pictures needed, nor for using satellite navigation to track the camera’s path, because the signals involved cannot go through water. “Photogrammetry is very effective in deep water but runs into problems at depths of less than a meter. This is a well-known challenge,” an expert said.
To overcome this, a diver swam along a precise underwater path carrying a single frame with two wide-angle, low-light cameras fixed to it. This method proved just as accurate as a drone flown in the air in terms of positioning, and provided a much clearer view of what was going on under the waves.
Beneath the island’s stone capping, they found wooden foundations dating back thousands of years. These were visible in the combined photogrammetry model thanks to a ditch (沟) dug underwater. The prehistoric humans who built this crannog first laid down a circular wooden platform roughly 23 meters across, topped with brushwood, around 5,000 years ago. About 2,000 years later, more brushwood was added, and the crannog was further strengthened with stone. At some point, a stone path was added, too, connecting the crannog to the nearby loch shore.
The study offers the first proof of a technique for imaging underwater sites with the same accuracy as the methods on land. It’s also an astonishing reminder that humans have been engineering the landscape for thousands of years.
12. What made it difficult to use drones for photographing the crannog?
A. The drone’s excessive flight speed.
B. Poor image clarity and blocked satellite signals in shallow water.
C. The lack of wide-angle camera equipment.
D. Experts’ insufficient drone-operating skills
13. What did the diver use to take photos underwater?
A. A single wide-angle camera. B. A drone with two cameras.
C. Two cameras fixed to a frame. D. A satellite-guided camera.
14. What can be inferred about the crannog from Paragraph 4?
A. It was only made of brushwood.
B. Its construction covered different time periods.
C. The wooden foundations were discovered entirely above the water.
D. The stone path was the first structure to be added to the crannog.
15. What does the author think of the study?
A. Risk-taking. B. Well-documented.
C. Data-driven. D. Ground-breaking.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The rain tapped hard on the classroom window as I hurried to my desk. Suddenly, I spotted something small and brown curled up in a puddle (小水洼) under an oak tree beside our teaching building — too still to be a leaf. With curiosity, I rushed out to it. However, when I knelt down, my breath caught: a sparrow with one wing broken, feathers knotted, eyes half-closed. “Don’t move,” I whispered, wrapping her in my handkerchief, then dashed back.
Ms. Sophie, my English teacher, helped me make a nest from a shoebox and tissues. “We need to act fast,” she said. “Who knows about birds?” Mia, who fed stray cats daily, raised her hand, “My uncle is a vet — he can show us how to cure the wing.” Jake, our art club member, grabbed his drawing book, “I’ll draw diagrams so we won’t mess up.” Lila, who usually kept to herself, spoke up: “I can research what sparrows eat online.”
That afternoon, our group crowded around the shoebox. Mia gently held the sparrow while Jake carefully attached a small stick to her broken wing. Lila read aloud from her phone: “Warm water and crushed blueberries, but only a drop at a time.” I took notes, marking when we fed her or changed the tissues. At one point, the sparrow chirped (发啁啾声) softly, and we all froze, grinning. For the first time, we weren’t just classmates-we were a team, each doing what we did best.
Problems popped up. The sparrow refused food the next day, and Lila panicked. “Did we hurt her?” Mia checked and shook her head. “Maybe she’s scared. Let’s leave her alone for a while.” We took turns sitting by the window, talking softly so she would get used to our voices.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 By Friday, something different happened. The little sparrow raised her head and pecked at blueberries from my finger. Slowly, she struggled to her feet, turning her head from side to side. At the moment, happiness and emotion welled up into our hearts. The sparrow came back to life. We cheered happily because our effort paid off. Three weeks later, we cautiously removed the small stick from her wing. For a second, she managed to hop on the edge of the box and made her first attempt to flutter wings. The wing was nearly recovered.
Then came the news that the vet said the sparrow was ready to fly. We carried her to the oak tree, where we’d found her. Immediately, she spread her wings and flew. With a cheerful call, she dived towards us, and lowered to stand on my shoulder, as if expressing her gratitude for saving her life to us, reluctant to leave. After circling again and again, she disappeared into the sky. At this time I fully understand not only do human beings have deep affection, but also other species do.

B

D
