The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens,Greece,in the year 1896.Athletes from
only 13 countries participated in the Games that year. They competed()in 43 different events in
just 9 sports (track and field, swimming, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, tennis, weight lifting
and Greco-Roman wrestling). In 2004 the summer Olympic Games took place once again in Athens,
Greece. This time, athletes from 202 countries and regions competed in 301 events in 28 sports.
Only five sports have been in every Olympic Games. They are track and field,swimming,fenc-
ing, cycling, and gymnastics.Other sports come and go in the Olympic Games. For example, tennis
was an Olympic sport from 1896 until 1924.Then it disappeared (from the Olympics until
1988.Baseball,badminton,and taekwondo are more recent additions()to the Olympic Games.
It is the job of the International Olympic Committee(IOC)to add and remove sports from the
Olympic Games.A sport has to be popular in at least 50 countries on three continents before it can
be added. However, the IOC doesn't want to add more sports to the Olympic Games without elimi-
nating others. The IOC is afraid that there will be too many sports in the Olympics.
Artistic events were also a part of the Olympic Games from 1912 to 1948.There were contests
in architecture, music, literature, and painting.Today some people think that artistic events and
games such as chess should be part of the Olympics. However, many people oppose this idea.
The Olympic Games today are very different from the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
These differences reflect the changing definition and popularity of sports.
()4.The purpose of the passage is to introduce
A.how sports come and go in the Olympic Games
B.who adds and removes sports from the Olympic Games
C.which sports are popular in the modern Olympic Games
D.why some sports events are a part of the Olympic Games
(
)5.The underlined word“eliminating”in Paragraph3 means“
A.adding
B.removing
C.taking place
D.competing
(
)6.Which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.There were more athletes and sports in the Olympic Games in 2004 than in the year 1896.
B.There weren't any tennis matches in the Olympic Games in 1980.
C.The recently added Olympic sports are popular in at least 50 countries on three continents.

Are you working out hard to get a better score at PE?Are you doing exercise to keep your
body healthy? What you might not realize is that with every step you take, every mile you run or
every lap you swim, you're improving your cognitive()fitness,too.Yes.That's right.Moving
your body boosts your brain(大脑)health.
“We know that physical exercise, especially aerobic(有氧的)exercise like running, jogging,
biking, swimming or even dancing,is very beneficial for keeping brain health, even for people who are
at risk of developing dementia(痴呆症)and Alzheimer's disease(阿尔茨海默病),”says neuropsy-
chologist(神经心理学家)Aaron Bonner-Jackson,PhD.“With regular exercise,you can make a
difference in terms of how your body is working and,as a result, how your brain is working.Among
all kinds of exercises, those that get your heart rate up are the best for your brain.
In a recent study,454 older adults took part in yearly physical exams and cognitive tests for 20
years and agreed to donate their brains for research when they died. They were given accelerometers
(加速度传感器),which tracked their movement and physical activity every day. Those who moved
more scored better on memory and thinking tests. And increases in physical activity lower the risk of
dementia,the researchers reported.
In another study,l60 older people with mild cognitive impairment(轻度认知障碍)were
assigned to take part in several choices. They could choose to do aerobic exercise(three times a week
for 45 minutes per time),eat a heart-healthy diet called DASH,combine()aerobic exercise with
the DASH diet or receive health education.
During the six-month study, those who followed the DASH diet alone didn't improve in tasks about
planning,problem-solving and multitasking.And the health-education group's brain function (got
worse, according to the study."Those who exercised showed improvements in thinking and memory,
and those who combined exercise and the DASH diet improved even more, the researchers reported.
“One of the key places these changes take place is in the hippocampus(海马体),which is a very
important area of the brain for memory,"Dr.Ross explains."In studies of the brain, they find that
people who get proper exercise see some improvement in their hippocampus, which helps improve
learning and memory.”
“Even for people who think that they have been the most sedentary(久坐的)or who may not
enjoy exercise, there are still health benefits for your body and your brain by starting an exercise
routine,"Dr.Ross continues."For example, achieving 7,500 steps or more daily can bring you about
1.4 to 2.2 years less brain aging().Anybody at any age can get the benefits from adding exercise
into their life.”
()7.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the two studies?
A.The findings of two studies are opposite.
B.Both of the studies lasted for many years.
C.The subjects in both studies are old people.
D.Both studies focused on exercise, diet and health.
()8.Paragraph 5 is mainly about_
A.what was found in the study
B.how the study was designed
C.who took part in the study
D.why the study was carried out
()9.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Aerobic exercise can hardly get your heart rate up.
B.Physical activities can't help lower the risk of dementia.
C.Health education turns to be more helpful than DASH diet alone.
D.Exercise can improve cognitive fitness and better thinking and memory.
()10.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To tell about the benefits of doing physical activities.
B.To encourage us to do more exercise to keep brains healthy.
C.To report the findings of researches about exercise and brain.
D.To explain why the body movements influence our brain health.

传统文化武术(期末·顺义区)Teens like to work out in their daily life, like
running, playing basketball or football. But we don't often think of martial arts as
possible activities.Instead,we rule them out because we think they are dangerous,
uncommon,and even impossible.
Well, here's some good news:you're wrong!Martial arts are much more common than people
think, and you can start learning at any age.Practicing martial arts is a great way to keep in shape
(both physically and mentally). And it's much less scary and much less difficult than it's usually
portrayed()as in movies. So don't worry. You don't need to be the karate kid to have a blast!
Let's look at what you can usually expect from martial arts of any style.
Good martial arts generally require you to focus on the position and movement of every one of
your limbs(),sometimes even your breathing too.Think about it:when you leave the gym, your
mental state has improved and you are much calmer. This is because you've only paid attention to
one activity. It is a great way to clear your head, and practice can help you learn to stay more focused
in general(say, when you start your schoolwork afterwards).
Long series of choreographed moves(including when to breathe in and out)called forms are often
described as“moving meditation(冥想)”;they're meditative in the same way doing repeated moves
is,but much more so.Martial arts practice can be as slow or as intense()as you want, but it's
always extremely attractive.

Martial arts also improve your coordination(协调性),and greatly improve your posture.I have
personally seen students go from slouching(低头垂肩地站)and knocking things over to walking tall
with their shoulders back in just a couple of months.

peals to you, remember that all of them are good choices, competitive or not.
