Money is part of our life. So we are faced with the same question: what to do with our money?
Smart spending (理性消费) means using money in a way that fits real needs, real value and real plans. In daily life, teenagers usually spend most of their money on necessary things — food, clothes or school things. But sometimes, they buy things they don’t really need. Following the crowd may lead teenagers to buy something unnecessary. For example, when some classmates have the same kind of pencil case, a teenager may feel unhappy about having a different one. So he will buy a new one like theirs.
Teenagers can start learning how to manage money wisely from an early age. On Tom’s 6th birthday, his grandmother gave him several jars (罐子) to help him make good use of money. One was for spending, one for saving and another for giving. From then on, Tom kept a money journal (记账本) to record where the money had gone. In it, he recorded his daily spending: a film ticket, a gift for Mum, a dictionary and some snacks. And since then, he has had this good habit.
Tom’s birthday present teaches us that money can serve not only ourselves but also people around us. This idea of “giving” can be put into real practice. This Spring, Xingfu Community held a “Tree Bank” activity. Lots of teenagers joined it. With their saved money, they bought eight young trees. On Tree Planting Day, they planted them on a hill nearyby. Even one coin can bring social meaning when it is used for public good.
Learning to manage money well can help teenagers build longlife values. Whether we spend, save or give money, we should think wisely before each decision.
21. What does smart spending mean?
A. Doing what most people do.
B. Putting money on necessary things.
C. Saving money for what brings you joy.
22. What makes some teenagers buy things they don’t really need?
A. To be like others.
B. To make themselves look cool.
C. To learn a lesson about spending money.
23. How does Tom’s journal help him?
A. It helps him record daily experiences.
B. It helps him remember important events.
C. It helps him know where his money goes.
24. Why was the “Tree Bank” activity held?
A. Because the community raised money in this way.
B. Because the community made money by selling young trees.
C. Because the community helped people learn the idea of giving.
25. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Smart Spending for Teenagers
B. Social Activities in Xingfu Community
C. Different Birthday Gifts for Young Kids

China’s space exploration has come a long way. It began in 1956 when the space industry started. Since then, many great things have happened.
In 1970, China sent its first man-made earth satellite into space. It was a huge milestone, because China became the fifth country in the world that could finish such a task all by itself. In 1992, China began its manned spaceflight program. After years of hard work, Shenzhou-5, the spaceship with a person inside, flew into space in 2003. With this breakthrough, China became the third country to send humans into space, after the former Soviet Union (前苏联) and the US. Astronaut Yang Liwei was in space for 21 hours, going around the earth 14 times. His safe return made him a hero.
In 2007, Chang’e-1 was successfully sent. It was the first Chinese satellite to travel around the moon. This was the start of China’s moon exploration. In 2013, Shenzhou-10 was sent up. It helped get ready for the Chinese Space Station.
The Chinese Space Station is really cool. It travels between 400 km and 450 km above the earth, at an angle (角度) of 42-43 degrees. It can last for 10 years and can hold three people for long-term stays. In 2021, astronauts Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo of Shenzhou-12 went into the core module Tianhe. That was the first time Chinese astronauts entered our own space station.
Though China has made amazing progress in space exploration, the journey ahead is never easy. China plans to send humans to the moon by 2030. Space exploration brings new chances for science development. However, it also brings plenty of challenges. Astronauts will face health risks in space, and space projects need lots of money. Every step forward calls for courage as well as careful planning.
26. What does the underlined word “milestone” probably mean?
A. An important event. B. A secret tool. C. A common rule.
27. What do we know about Yang Liwei?
A. He stayed in space for about two weeks.
B. He travelled around Earth 14 times in space.
C. He took part in our country’s moon-exploration tasks.
28. Which of the following is TRUE about the Chinese Space Station?
A. It can work for less than ten years.
B. It can hold three astronauts for long-term stays.
C. It can travel higher than 500 km above the earth.
29. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Space exploration cost little if well-planned.
B. Space exploration can be finished before 2030.
C. Space exploration is valuable but full of difficulties.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Different space projects around the whole world.
B. The history and future of China’s space exploration.
C. Great astronauts who work for China’s space program.

This year marks the 31st World Book Day. It is reported that there are 158,464,880 books in the world, with about 2.2 million new ones coming out each year.
What You Need to Know
●Nine out of 10 people say that their favorite books are the ones they pick out themselves
●People who choose their favorite books read more.
●Reading books improves people’s understanding.
Some people prefer to dive into something new while others return to old favorites. Books are like people. Some you meet once and that’s enough. Some you want to get to know better, and whenever you are with them, you’ll discover more about them.
Last week, we asked 1000 readers if they should read a book more than once. The pie chart on the left shows the result. Here are more voices.
Fu Xing, a student
Amy, a teacher
Wei Guo, a blogger
Books aren’t like films or songs. Reading a book takes time. Why do you waste time on something you’ve already read? If you keep reading the same book, you may lose the chance to learn new or different stories. Even worse, you won’t make progress as a reader.
People notice new details and understand the themes differently every time they read a book again. People get more pleasure when rereading, especially as they get older. Reading something at the age of 10 is different from reading it at the age of 15.
Many people find it hard to choose books that interest them. In this way, it’s better for them to reread the same book than to give up reading. Book lovers say that rereading can bring more comfort and joy. So it doesn’t matter if you’re reading it for the first time or the fifth.
36. How does reading help us?

37. According to the chart, how many people agree to read a book more than once?

38. Why doesn’t Fu Xing agree to reread books? (Give one reason.)

39. What ideas do Amy and Wei Guo have in common about rereading?

40. Will you read a book more than once? Why or why not?

For the first three months of school, I always sat at the back of the classroom and 46 silent. I never raised my hand or joined a class 47 , afraid of saying something wrong. I wanted to stay quiet and unnoticed. This went on until our teacher told 48 to do a group project. The teacher divided us into groups, and I was with Leo. He was one of the 49 boys in our class. He talked a lot in class and answered every question the teacher asked. When I knew we were 50 , I thought our group project would be a failure.
At first, Leo was talking without any stop while I 51 in my seat listening silently. All of a sudden, he stopped and let me share my ideas. I spoke 52 and it took a while. To my surprise, he said my ideas were really good. Then we worked hard together. In the 53 week, we finished our group project on time. We both felt proud of it. On the project show day, Leo asked me to speak in front of the class. 54 I was really nervous, I did it bravely.
This experience taught me an important lesson. Sometimes, growth comes from someone who sees the hidden power in us and gives us a chance to try. Leo didn’t just help me 55 the group project—he helped me find my true self and be brave to speak out. It’s a big step in my development.
