I became a math teacher for 7th graders at a New York City public school. And like any other teacher, I made quizzes (测验) and tests. When students handed in their papers, I marked them and recorded students’ scores. What I noticed was that IQ wasn’t the only difference between my best and worst students. Some of my best performers didn’t have great IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. That got me thinking. After several more years of teaching, I came to realize that what we need in education is a much better understanding of students and learning from a motivational and psychological point of view. In education, the one thing we can measure best is IQ. But what if doing well in school and in life depends on much more than your ability to learn quickly and easily? So I quit teaching to become a psychologist. I started observing kids and adults in all kinds of really difficult situations, and in each study I wanted to know: Who succeeds here and why? My research team and I went to a school. We tried to predict which students would finish military training and which would drop out. We also studied first-year teachers working in very difficult neighborhoods, asking which teachers would still be here by the end of the school year. Across all those different situations, one quality stood out as what set apart those who made it. It wasn’t social intelligence. It wasn’t good looks, physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It turned out to be persistence. We know so much about IQ — how to measure it, how to rank it, how to debate its limitation — but when it comes to persistence, we are only just beginning. That’s the work ahead of us. We need to take our best ideas and our strongest intuitions (直觉), and we need to put them to the test. We need to measure whether we’ve succeeded, and we have to be willing to fail, to be wrong, and to start over again with lessons learned. 1.What made the author confused after he recorded students’ scores? A.Teaching was more tiring than consulting. B.Students’ IQ levels were hard to measure. C.High-IQ students might not perform well. D.Some students put little effort into quizzes. 2.Why did the author quit teaching to become a psychologist? A.To figure out what contributes to success. B.To design standard tests for measuring students’ IQ. C.To study whether IQ determines people’s achievements. D.To learn more about students’ psychology and motivation. 3.How did the author reach the conclusion in paragraph 4? A.By analyzing reasons for quitting. B.By reviewing psychological theories. C.By studying people in tough conditions. D.By comparing people’s different choices. 4.What can we learn about persistence from the research? A.It is a key quality to achieve success. B.It needs to be tested in more research. C.It has been as fully understood as IQ. D.It works with high IQ to bring success. 根据第一段“What I noticed was that IQ wasn’t the only difference between my best and worst students. Some of my best performers didn’t have great IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. That got me thinking. (我注意到智商并不是区分好学生与差学生的唯一因素。一些表现优异的学生智商并不高,一些智商很高的孩子表现却不好。这引发了我的思考)”可知,令作者困惑的是高智商学生未必表现优异。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段“I started observing kids and adults in all kinds of really difficult situations, and in each study I wanted to know: Who succeeds here and why? (我开始观察身处各种困境中的孩子和成年人,在每一项研究中我都想知道:谁能在这里取得成功,以及为什么?)”可知,作者转行做心理学家,目的是弄清楚促成成功的因素。 3.推理判断题。根据第三段“I started observing kids and adults in all kinds of really difficult situations (我开始观察身处各种困境中的孩子与成年人)”以及第四段“Across all those different situations, one quality stood out as what set apart those who made it. (在所有这些不同的情境下,有一种特质让成功者脱颖而出)”可知,作者通过研究困境中的人得出该结论。 4.细节理解题。根据第四段“Across all those different situations, one quality stood out as what set apart those who made it. It wasn’t social intelligence. It wasn’t good looks, physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It turned out to be persistence. (在所有这些不同的情境下,有一种特质让成功者脱颖而出——它不是社交智慧,也不是外貌、身体健康或智商。结果发现,这种特质是坚持力)”可知,毅力是获得成功的关键品质。 七、七选五 (26-27高二上·广东梅州·开学考试)How to Break Up with Your Phone Smartphones have become an inseparable part of modern life. We check them first thing in the morning and last thing at night. 1 . But experts warn that excessive phone use can lead to anxiety, sleep problems, and reduced attention spans. The first step to regaining control is awareness. Many people don’t realize how often they pick up their phones. 2 . You might be surprised to find that you unlock your phone over 100 times a day without even thinking about it. Once you know your habits, set clear boundaries. Designate phone-free zones in your home — the dinner table, the bedroom, or the bathroom are good places to start. 3 . When you remove the device from your immediate environment, you remove the temptation. Another effective strategy is to turn off unnecessary notifications. Most alerts are designed to grab your attention, not to convey important information. 4 . You’ll quickly realize that you don’t miss much, and the peace of mind is well worth it. Finally, replace screen time with meaningful activities. Instead of scrolling through social media, try reading a book, going for a walk, or having a face-to-face conversation. 5 . The goal isn’t to abandon technology completely — it’s to use it intentionally rather than habitually. Remember, breaking up with your phone is a process, not an overnight transformation. Start small, be patient with yourself, and celebrate every step toward a healthier relationship with your device. A.Try keeping a log of your phone usage for a day or two B.This might sound difficult at first, but it gets easier with practice C.The average person spends over four hours a day on their mobile device D.Studies have shown that simply having a phone in sight can reduce cognitive performance E.By doing so, you’re not just killing time — you’re investing in your well-being F.People who spend less time on their phones report higher levels of life satisfaction G.Start by turning off all non-essential alerts and see how it feels 【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.G 5.E 【导语】文章主要介绍了如何与手机建立更健康关系的五个步骤:提高意识、设定界限、关闭通知、用有意义的活动替代屏幕时间,以及保持耐心。 1.由上文“Smartphones have become an inseparable part of modern life. We check them first thing in the morning and last thing at night. (智能手机已成为现代生活中不可分割的一部分。我们早上第一件事和晚上最后一件事都是看手机。)”以及下文“But experts warn that excessive phone use can lead to anxiety, sleep problems, and reduced attention spans. (但专家警告说,过度使用手机会导致焦虑、睡眠问题和注意力下降。)”可知,本空要说人们使用手机的具体数据,C选项“The average person spends over four hours a day on their mobile device (普通人每天在移动设备上花费超过四个小时)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“over four hours a day”与上文的“first thing in the morning and last thing at night”相呼应,说明使用频率之高,且该选项中的具体数据与下文的“But experts warn”形成转折——虽然使用时间长,但过度使用有害。 2.由上文“The first step to regaining control is awareness. Many people don’t realize how often they pick up their phones. (重新获得控制的第一步是意识。许多人没有意识到他们拿起手机的频率有多高。)”以及下文“You might be surprised to find that you unlock your phone over 100 times a day without even thinking about it. (你可能会惊讶地发现,你每天在不知不觉中解锁手机超过100次。)”可知,本空要说记录手机使用情况的具体方法,A选项“Try keeping a log of your phone usage for a day or two (试着记录一两天你的手机使用情况)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“keeping a log”与上文的“awareness”和“realize how often”相呼应,且该选项中的“for a day or two”引出下文的“over 100 times a day”,表示通过记录来发现无意识的使用习惯。 3.由上文“Designate phone-free zones in your home — the dinner table, the bedroom, or the bathroom are good places to start. (在家中指定无手机区域——餐桌、卧室或浴室都是不错的起点。)”以及下文“When you remove the device from your immediate environment, you remove the temptation. (当你将设备从身边环境中移开时,你就消除了诱惑。)”可知,本空要说手机在视线内的负面影响,D选项“Studies have shown that simply having a phone in sight can reduce cognitive performance (研究表明,仅仅是手机在视线内就会降低认知表现)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“having a phone in sight”与上文的“phone-free zones”和下文的“remove the device from your immediate environment”相呼应,且该选项用研究结果支撑为什么要设立无手机区域。 4.由上文“Another effective strategy is to turn off unnecessary notifications. Most alerts are designed to grab your attention, not to convey important information. (另一个有效策略是关闭不必要的通知。大多数提醒旨在吸引你的注意力,而非传达重要信息。)”以及下文“You’ll quickly realize that you don’t miss much, and the peace of mind is well worth it. (你很快会意识到你并没有错过什么,内心的平静非常值得。)”可知,本空要说具体如何关闭通知,G选项“Start by turning off all non-essential alerts and see how it feels (从关闭所有非必要提醒开始,看看感觉如何)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“turning off all non-essential alerts”与上文的“turn off unnecessary notifications”相呼应,且该选项中的“see how it feels”引出下文的“You’ll quickly realize”,表示先行动再感受效果。 5.由上文“Instead of scrolling through social media, try reading a book, going for a walk, or having a face-to-face conversation. (与其刷社交媒体,不如试着读一本书、去散步或进行面对面交谈。)”以及下文“The goal isn’t to abandon technology completely — it’s to use it intentionally rather than habitually. (目标不是完全抛弃科技——而是有意识地使用它,而非习惯性地使用。)”可知,本空要说这些替代活动的意义,E选项“By doing so, you’re not just killing time — you’re investing in your well-being (这样做,你不只是在消磨时间——你是在为自己的福祉投资)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“By doing so”指代上文的“reading a book, going for a walk, or having a face-to-face conversation”,且该选项中的“investing in your well-being”与下文的“use it intentionally”相呼应,表示有意识的活动选择是对自身福祉的投资。 (2026·全国一卷·高考真题)Not long ago, my fifth-grade son Kevin asked me about the meaning of a word in a novel. “Look it up,” I responded. “But my screen time is off,” he said. I looked pointedly at the bookshelf that held at least three dictionaries, and Kevin sighed (叹气) dramatically. “Can’t you just use your phone?” he asked. Suddenly it occurred to me that he did not even know how to use a dictionary. I took down one of the dictionaries, and we read it together for a few minutes before I handed it to him. It took him a few tries to find the word in question. While going through the pages, he kept saying, wide-eyed: “How can there be this many words?” After a while, he looked at me and asked, “Do you know all these words, Mom?” I smiled. “I definitely do not know all these words,” I said. “But that’s why this is one of my favorite books.” I had my first dictionary as a gift for my 13th birthday. I decided that I wanted to learn as many words as I could and started marking every entry I looked up with a pencil to measure my progress. I continued to make these pencil marks for years, and when I went off to college, I packed that dictionary in my suitcase. Kevin wanted to see the dictionary. I felt a small pain in my chest. The dictionary was stolen at the end of my freshman year of college. “That’s so sad,” he said, “but you still know all those words, even without the book.” I realized that this was true. I still made it through the next three years of college, even without the book. And it wasn’t, ultimately, the dictionary that got me there — not really. Now I understand that although my son may be learning differently, he is still learning. It’s not about the words themselves or how we learn them, but the wanting to know them, the curiosity and the appetite. 1.What does Kevin usually do to get the meaning of a word? A.Use electronic devices. B.Consult a paper dictionary. C.Guess from the context. D.Turn to his English teacher. 2.How did Kevin feel while looking up the word in the dictionary? A.Annoyed. B.Disappointed. C.Encouraged. D.Astonished. 3.What can we learn about the author’s first dictionary? A.It helped her through college. B.It was given to Kevin as a gift. C.It bore witness to her efforts. D.It was a valuable limited edition. 4.What has the author come to realize about learning? A.It is never too late to start. B.Motivation is what really matters. C.Children need role models. D.Dictionaries are still a useful tool. 根据第一段中“Not long ago, my fifth-grade son Kevin asked me about the meaning of a word in a novel. “Look it up,” I responded. “But my screen time is off,” he said. I looked pointedly at the bookshelf that held at least three dictionaries, and Kevin sighed (叹气) dramatically. “Can’t you just use your phone?” he asked. (不久前,我上五年级的儿子Kevin问我一本小说里某个词的意思。“查字典,”我回答。“但是我的屏幕使用时间已经用完了,”他说。我刻意地看向放着至少三本字典的书架,Kevin夸张地叹了口气。“你就不能用你的手机查吗?”他问道。)”可知,作者提示Kevin用纸质词典查单词,但他想用手机,说明Kevin通常使用电子设备来获取单词的意思。 2.细节理解题。根据第二段中“I took down one of the dictionaries, and we read it together for a few minutes before I handed it to him. It took him a few tries to find the word in question. While going through the pages, he kept saying, wide-eyed: “How can there be this many words?” (我取下一本字典,我们一起读了几分钟,然后我把它递给了他。他试了好几次才找到那个词。在翻阅书页时,他睁大眼睛不停地说:“怎么会有这么多单词?”)”可知,Kevin查字典才发现有那么多单词,他感到很惊讶。 3.推理判断题。根据第三段“I had my first dictionary as a gift for my 13th birthday. I decided that I wanted to learn as many words as I could and started marking every entry I looked up with a pencil to measure my progress. I continued to make these pencil marks for years, and when I went off to college, I packed that dictionary in my suitcase. (我的第一本字典是我13岁生日时的礼物。我决定要尽可能多地学习单词,并开始用铅笔在我查过的每个词条旁做标记来衡量自己的进步。我持续做这些铅笔标记多年,上大学时,我把那本字典装进了行李箱)”可知,作者的第一本字典见证了她进入大学之前的整个努力过程。 4.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Now I understand that although my son may be learning differently, he is still learning. It’s not about the words themselves or how we learn them, but the wanting to know them, the curiosity and the appetite. 有影响力的 ________________ 2. 奉献;致力于 ________________ 3. 生产;产量 ________________ 4. 远见卓识 ________________ 5. 最低限度;最少量 ________________ 6. 冠军称号 ________________ 7. 出版商 ________________ 8. 拒绝接受 ________________ 9. 限制;限定 ________________ 10. 说服;使确信 ________________ 二、根据句意及汉语提示写出单词 1. C.It bore witness to her efforts. D.It was a valuable limited edition. 4.What has the author come to realize about learning? A.It is never too late to start. B.Motivation is what really matters. C.Children need role models. D.Dictionaries are still a useful tool.
