He had worked in the film industry for 30 years, but he gradually got tired of his job. “I thought things would only get worse and worse,” he said. Brown knew he had to do something else — but what? A few years earlier, he had bought the house where he lived as a child and moved back in. Brown was originally thinking about making gardening his second career when another voice spoke to him deep inside. “All these years, that little boy who used to love drawing has been whispering softly in my heart,” he said. A longing that he had never paid much attention to was awakened. There was a huge oak tree (橡树) near Brown’s home. When he was a child, the tree seemed like a magical giant to him — it was a precious home for birds, insects and animals, and there was even a hole inside it. “We used to squeeze through this hole to play in the tree,” he recalled. He decided to lock himself away for two months to draw every beautiful detail of the tree. “When I was drawing,” he said, “there were moments when it felt like the tree was drawing itself. I spent so much time playing in it when I was young. I could feel it — it had been deeply rooted in my heart for a long time.” The finished drawing of the oak tree was full of “real power,” he said. “The closer you look at it, the more lifelike it seems.” And just like that, Brown became a tree portraitist. In the following years, he traveled all over Britain. With the help of the Ancient Tree Forum, the Tree Council and the Woodland Trust, he chose some special trees and spent several days observing and drawing each one. Brown has started working on a series of 20 drawings featuring Britain’s most important ash trees. “These beautiful old ash trees will soon disappear from us,” he said. “They are 350 years old, but they are dying because of a disease that we humans have spread.” “Drawing is not only an act of care, but also a call for people to protect trees,” Brown explained. “It also allows me to combine my love for nature with my creativity.” It has also given him a new perspective on the passing of time. “I am already an old man, but I am only 71 years old. Some of the trees I have drawn are 1,000 years old. When I am with these trees and drawing them, I think about the end of my own life and how short human life is — passing by in a moment beneath these ancient trees.” 4. What did Brown do at the age of 57? A. He moved into his old house. B. He found back his love for drawing from childhood. C. He had the best time of his life. D. He developed a passion for gardening. 5. What can we learn about the oak tree and Brown? A. It helped him start a new career. B. It linked him with the world. C. He built a tree house in it. D. He studied birds, insects and animals in it. 6. What is Brown working on? A. Setting up tree groups. B. Trying to find ways to cure sick trees. C. Drawing trees to ask people to protect them. D. Traveling around Britain to pick important trees. 7. What does he feel when Brown is with trees? A. Time is endless. B. Human life is short. C. Nature is always changing. D. Life-long learning is crucial. C Come up with a password that’s at least 10 characters long. It should include numbers, at least one symbol, and — just to be safe — be something you’ll remember, of course. Yes, passwords are annoying, but their days are numbered: passkeys are here to make passwords obsolete. With passkeys, you don’t have to remember or make up anything. When you sign up for a website or app, your phone or computer creates two linked keys: a public key and a private key. The public key is kept on the website’s or app’s servers. The private key — a long string of letters and numbers — is only saved on your device. When you log in, the website’s server sends a “check” to your device. Your device uses the private key to create a unique “signature” as proof. Then you use your PIN, fingerprint, or face scan to unlock your device and approve this signature. The server then matches your signature with your public key to let you in. Your private key is safe because no one can get it from the public key. Because passkeys are made for one specific website or app, they won’t work on fake sites (like ones that look like your bank’s site and try to steal your password). Passkeys also can’t be tricked by scammers who lie to get your info — since you don’t even know the passkey yourself; only your device does. Even though passkeys are one of the safest solutions ever, Jonathan S. Weissman, a cybersecurity (网络安全) expert from the Rochester Institute of Technology, says many people will keep using passwords because they’re used to them. Andrew Shikiar, director of the FIDO Alliance (an organization working on fast online identity checks), agrees that people hate change — but he thinks consumers will finally get used to this new technology. “Someday, we’ll look back at passwords the way we now look at old dial phones,” he predicts. 8. What does the underlined word “obsolete” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Out of trouble. B. Out of reach. C. Out of hand. D. Out of date. 9. What is the second paragraph mainly talking about concerning passkeys? A. What they are made of. B. How they work. C. What special features they have. D. It’s where they can be used. 10. What can be inferred about passkeys from Paragraphs 3 and 4? A. They can’t be tricked by fake sites. B. They are saved by certain apps. C. They became popular right away. D. They change by themselves to stay safe. 11. What attitude does Shikiar have towards the prospect of passkeys? A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Dismissive. (不屑一顾的) D Power often makes employees more creative because being powerful frees them from rules and limits. However, new research shows that employees without much power can become more creative too — if they get time to “warm up” to a creative task by doing it more than once. “This is important,” said Brian Lucas, an assistant professor at Cornell University. “When more powerful people can share creative ideas more easily than less powerful ones, it creates a ‘rich-get-richer’ situation. This makes the gap between powerful and less powerful workers even bigger. So finding ways to boost (推动) less powerful workers’ creativity can help fix this unfair disadvantage,” Lucas explained. Lucas and his team did two studies to prove their point. In the first study, they split the creative task into two rounds: a 1-minute “warm-up” round, followed by a second round where participants could take as long as they wanted. The researchers randomly put people into two groups: a “high-power” group and a “low-power” group. To make people feel powerful or not, they gave different roles: those in the high-power group got a leadership role (with control over resources), while those in the low-power group got an ordinary employee role (with no control over resources). The study found that high-power people were more creative in the warm-up round. But in the second round, both groups were equally creative. In the second study, the researchers used a different creative task and increased the number of rounds from two to five. Participants could take as much time as they liked for each round. Just like the first study, high-power people were more creative in the first round. But after that, less powerful people’s creativity caught up to the high-power group’s. “The ‘warm-up effect’ for less powerful workers gives a simple solution,” Lucas said. “It helps all employees use their creative potential and reduces unfair power gaps at work: when people do creative tasks, let them warm up first.” 12. Why does Lucas think it important to boost the creativity of lower power workers? A. It maintains power imbalances. B. It makes them want to catch up. C. It creates a competitive work environment. D. It helps make the workplace fairer. 13. How did researchers make people feel powerful in the first study? A. By offering different rewards. B. By giving different roles. C. By setting different time limits. D. By giving different creative tasks. 14. What is the difference between the two studies? A. The number of participants. B. The way of giving roles. C. The type of creative tasks. D. The time length of each round. 15. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Power makes employees much more creative. B. Less powerful workers are less creative at first. C. Warm-up time fixes the unfair creativity gap caused by power. D. Power gaps at work affect how creative employees are. Today, we have an always-in-your-pocket, 24/7 news cycle. When you open a news app, you’ll notice a brief moment when the “old news” is still there. In a flash, the ancient history of a few hours ago is swept away for the next “breaking news”. ____16____ It’s endless, but you had better keep up. Researchers refer to this world with the phrase “noise bottleneck” (信息噪音瓶颈). A noise bottleneck is a situation where we are overwhelmed with so much information, or noise, that our cognitive abilities can’t keep up. ____17____ Thus, while our attention can handle hours of videos, our long-term learning processes cannot. ____18____ We watch TV while holding our phones, and we listen to music when shopping. However, the human brain may have structural limits rooted in its cognitive architecture, which cause a slowdown when two tasks are done at the same time. In short, your brain is not as good as you think it is. You are a human being who can only take in so much in a day. Understanding the noise bottleneck allows us to fix it. So, here are three tips to get you started: Clear your content — create a new social media account and follow only the accounts or people you find really valuable. Single-task — you don’t need to get rid of your phone, but do get rid of distractions. ____19____ For example, say, “I will only read this magazine after dinner.” Multitasking is for show; single-tasking is for those who are serious about getting things done. Accept your limits — you’ll never read all the news. Accept that you can only choose two or three stories and embrace that fact. ____20____ You’re getting more out of those few than that “super-productive” person on social media who claims to read five books a week. After all, it’s better to remember a little than to forget a lot. A. Give yourself a time limit or restriction if it helps. B. Every second, new information is presented to you. C. Don’t be hard on yourself for not being productive. D. Breaking through the noise bottleneck is a legendary idea. E. The matter is made worse by our modern addiction to multitasking. F. Multitasking has greatly changed the way we use information. G. Our brains have limited resources, spread across many functions. 第三部分: 英语基础知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 一: 完型填空(共15 小题, 每小题 1 分,满分15分) Eli walked to school every day, a familiar routine that never failed to bring him a sense of peace. Dad glanced at me through the rearview (后视镜) mirror. “Alex, this will be a nice opportunity for you to see your grandparents.” The car turned onto a familiar dirt road. We’re-getting farther from the city. Farther from Internet access. Farther from the computer camp. “Cheer up, Alex! There will be another computer camp soon,” said Mom. “Probably even this summer.” All my programming friends would be coding at the computer camp this week while I was stuck on the farm. I didn’t say a word. Finally, the car pulled into Granny and Granddad’s driveway. A thin line of trees came into sight. I liked visiting the farm on’ spring breaks before I started doing coding camps…and before I knew how badly I could mess things up. The car engine wasn’t off when Granny bounded (跳跃着跑) toward us. I watched from the backseat as Dad and Mom hugged Granny. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. Gravity seemed abnormally strong. ”You two deserve a vacation,” Granny was saying. “Alex will be fine — he loves being on the farm.” She meant loved. Alex loved being on the farm. During lunch Granny asked, “Why so sad, Alex?” I kept silent. Why? They’re really acting as if nothing had happened during my last visit. For a second, my eyes caught Granny’s. Could I ask her if her goats had destroyed all her next-door neighbor, Mr. Jackson’s flowers because I lifted the latch (门闩) and let out the goats? Was Mr. Jackson still angry with me for having brought him such a great loss? “I’m fine,” I mumbled (咕哝). “Just missing the coding camp this week. Coding’s just something I’m good at.” Mummy nodded. “Ahhh. That sounds disappointing, but the farm will bring you something different.” After lunch, I was on my own when, out of nowhere, there’s Mr. Jackson. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Instead, Mr. Jackson yelled, “Great to see you here, Alex! B 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Mark Brown is 57 years old. He had worked in the film industry for 30 years, but he gradually got tired of his job. ‘I thought things would only get worse and worse,’ he said. Brown knew he had to do something else — but what? 及第二段“A few years earlier, he had bought the house where he lived as a child and moved back in. Brown was originally thinking about making gardening his second career when another voice spoke to him deep inside. ‘All these years, that little boy who used to love drawing has been whispering softly in my heart,’ he said. A longing that he had never paid much attention to was awakened. 根据第三段“There was a huge oak tree near Brown’s home. When he was a child, the tree seemed like a magical giant to him — it was a precious home for birds, insects and animals, and there was even a hole inside it. ‘We used to squeeze through this hole to play in the tree,’ he recalled. He decided to lock himself away for two months to draw every beautiful detail of the tree. 及第四段中“The finished drawing of the oak tree was full of ‘real power,’ he said. ‘The closer you look at it, the more lifelike it seems.’ And just like that, Brown became a tree portraitist. 根据第五段中“Brown has started working on a series of 20 drawings featuring Britain’s most important ash trees. 及第七段中“‘Drawing is not only an act of care, but also a call for people to protect trees,’ Brown explained. 根据最后一段“I am already an old man, but I am only 71 years old. Some of the trees I have drawn are 1,000 years old. When I am with these trees and drawing them, I think about the end of my own life and how short human life is — passing by in a moment beneath these ancient trees. A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Dismissive. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段中的“Yes, passwords are annoying, but their days are numbered: passkeys are here to make passwords obsolete.(没错,密码很麻烦,不过它的日子不多了:密钥的出现会让密码obsolete。)” 根据第二段中的“When you log in, the website’s server sends a “check” to your device. Your device uses the private key to create a unique “signature” as proof. Then you use your PIN, fingerprint, or face scan to unlock your device and approve this signature. The server then matches your signature with your public key to let you in.(当你登录时,网站的服务器会向你的设备发送一个“校验”请求。 根据第三段中的“Because passkeys are made for one specific website or app, they won’t work on fake sites (like ones that look like your bank’s site and try to steal your password).(因为密钥是为特定的网站或应用生成的,所以在虚假网站(比如那些看起来像你的银行网站、试图窃取你密码的网站)上,它们是无法使用的。)” 根据第五段中的“Andrew Shikiar, director of the FIDO Alliance (an organization working on fast online identity checks), agrees that people hate change — but he thinks consumers will finally get used to this new technology. “Someday, we’ll look back at passwords the way we now look at old dial phones,” he predicts.(FIDO联盟(一个致力于快速在线身份验证的组织)的负责人Andrew Shikiar也认为人们讨厌改变——但他认为消费者最终会习惯这项新技术。“总有一天,我们会像现在看待老式拨盘电话一样回顾密码时代,”他预测道。)”可知,Shikiar对密钥的前景持乐观态度。 D Power often makes employees more creative because being powerful frees them from rules and limits. D 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第三段中“To make people feel powerful or not, they gave different roles: those in the high-power group got a leadership role (with control over resources), while those in the low-power group got an ordinary employee role (with no control over resources). 根据第四段开头“In the second study, the researchers used a different creative task and increased the number of rounds from two to five. 根据第一段“Power often makes employees more creative because being powerful frees them from rules and limits. However, new research shows that employees without much power can become more creative too — if they get time to ‘warm up’ to a creative task by doing it more than once. C选项“Warm-up time fixes the unfair creativity gap caused by power. B 17. G 18. E 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 上文“When you open a news app, you’ll notice a brief moment when the “old news” is still there. In a flash, the ancient history of a few hours ago is swept away for the next “breaking news”. 描述新闻应用瞬间的更替,下文“It’s endless, but you had better keep up. 因此B项“Every second, new information is presented to you. 【17题详解】 上文“A noise bottleneck is a situation where we are overwhelmed with so much information, or noise, that our cognitive abilities can’t keep up. 给出信息噪音瓶颈的定义,说明认知能力与信息量之间的关系,下文“Thus, while our attention can handle hours of videos, our long-term learning processes cannot. 因此G项“Our brains have limited resources, spread across many functions. 【18题详解】 下文“We watch TV while holding our phones, and we listen to music when shopping. However, the human brain may have structural limits rooted in its cognitive architecture, which cause a slowdown when two tasks are done at the same time. 因此E项“The matter is made worse by our modern addiction to multitasking. 【19题详解】 上文“Single-task — you don’t need to get rid of your phone, but do get rid of distractions. 建议单任务处理,摆脱干扰,下文“For example, say, “I will only read this magazine after dinner.” 因此A项“Give yourself a time limit or restriction if it helps. 【20题详解】 上文“Accept your limits — you’ll never read all the news. Accept that you can only choose two or three stories and embrace that fact. 建议接受局限,有选择地读新闻,下文“You’re getting more out of those few than that “super-productive” person on social media who claims to read five books a week. 因此C项“Don’t be hard on yourself for not being productive. 第三部分: 英语基础知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 一: 完型填空(共15 小题, 每小题 1 分,满分15分) Eli walked to school every day, a familiar routine that never failed to bring him a sense of peace. I drew in a breath, let it out against the backseat window, and scratched the word AWFUL on the fogged glass. I need your help with a lamb’s birth.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 After lunch, I was on my own when, out of nowhere, there’s Mr. Jackson. I was rooted at the spot. Never in my wildest dream did I expect that I would encounter Mr. Jackson here and now. I was at a loss and was ready for a bad scold. I mean, I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer. Mr. Jackson approached me as my mind was racing through what happened last summer. He seemed to have totally forgotten what happened just like my Granny. Instead, Mr. Jackson yelled, “Great to see you here, Alex! I need your help with a lamb’s birth.” I rushed to his barn with him. In a series of movements, I seized a bucket, filled it with hot water and prepared towels and scissors. After meeting this newborn lamb, I heard Mr. Jackson said, “Thank you, Alex! You saved my lamb.” At least I knew how to help with a lamb’s birth, about which my programming friends might know nothing. I didn’t mess it up this time. That’s something. I finally felt relieved and regarded what happened last summer as water under the bridge. The farm did bring me something. Don’t focus on the past and seize the moment. Jackson。” 3. 词汇激活 行为类 ①遇到:encounter/come across ②抓住:seize/grab ③专注于:focus on/concentrate on 情绪类 ①释然的:relieved/relaxed ②不知所措:at a loss/be at a nonplus 【点睛】[高分句型1]Never in my wildest dream did I expect that I would encounter Mr. Jackson here and now.(运用了倒装句以及that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2]At least I knew how to help with a lamb’s birth, about which my programming friends might know nothing.(运用了介词+which引导的非限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
