The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO2 emissions. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions — poses unique challenges. Below is the 2025 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY 52% HEATING 28% COOLING 12%
APPLIANCES 6% LIGHTING 2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%. Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
SMART GRIDS — Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.
SOLAR PANELS — Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for households. Advances in photovoltaic cells (光伏电池) have cut costs by 80% since 2010, making them cost-efficient in numerous regions.
WIND TURBINES — Community Microgrids
Small-scale turbines (涡轮机) in windy areas can power neighborhoods, though land use debates persist. “The scale of this transition is staggering,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist at MIT. Residential renewables like solar and heat pumps could meet 90% of global household demand by 2050 — but only if investments triple within this decade. Recent studies show that every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate adaptation costs. This isn’t just an environmental necessity, it’s economical tendency.
21. Which categories account for over three-quarters of total household emissions?
A. Heating and Cooling. B. Electricity and Heating.
C. Appliances and Lighting. D. Cooling and Appliances.
22. Which technology is cost-effective in numerous regions?
A. Heat pumps B. Smart grids C. Wind turbines D. Solar panels
23. What does Dr. Torres emphasize about the energy transition?
A. The dominance of gas boilers B. The increase in solar efficiency
C. The need for higher investment D. The breakthrough in heat pump technology

Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage (车库), and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket (桶). It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.
However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. After dismissing unsuitable options from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly high-fived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was complete. What’s more, it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.
Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna called back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想) “, adding yet another name.
Last fall, with the temperature falling, we came to the end of sitting outdoors. We were faced with one problem — what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter.
When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives.
24. Why did Donna decide to replace the chair and bucket?
A. To lighten the carrying load. B. To attract more neighbours.
C. To get better seating for chats. D. To adapt to warmer weather.
25. How did the bench get its various names?
A. From items placed on it. B. From seasonal discussions.
C. From users’ activities on it. D. From Donna’s creative ideas.
26. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted.
B. To show the bench was not serving its purpose.
C. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter.
D. To explain why the bench needed winter storage.
27. Which of the following is probably the best title of the passage?
A. Having fun with neighbors. B. Bonding through a bench.
C. Cherishing the time together. D. Varying activities in the season.
C
Many people believe that creativity is a unique gift belonging to a small group of talented individuals. They tend to think only gifted people are born with creative minds, while ordinary people can hardly come up with original thoughts. However, recent psychological and behavioral research suggests that creativity is not an inborn talent but a practical learnable skill that can be gradually developed through long-term daily training.
Researchers carried out a two-month experiment targeting ordinary college students with no artistic foundation or creative experience. All participants were required to complete interesting small creative tasks every day, including redesigning common daily objects and writing short imaginative paragraphs. During the whole process, participants were not pushed to achieve perfect outcomes. Instead, they were motivated to put forward bold and novel ideas and learn to accept unavoidable mistakes calmly.
The final collected data brought out impressive results. After daily persistent training, most participants achieved much higher scores in creative thinking tests. They became far better at linking unrelated things together and creating brand-new original ideas. Most importantly, the research proved that the core of gaining creativity rests with active exploration instead of natural talent. Those brave enough to break traditional fixed thinking patterns can more easily work out creative solutions to problems.
Even so, plenty of people struggle to develop their inner creativity. The biggest obstacle comes from the fear of failure and negative comments from others. Since early childhood, people are guided to chase standard answers and stay away from mistakes. This educational habit slowly traps people’s thoughts within rigid boundaries.
Different from stable intelligence, creativity can be boosted at any stage of life. The research provides a fresh viewpoint that creativity is never exclusive to geniuses. As long as ordinary people keep practicing bravely and daring to try new things, everyone can discover and unlock their hidden creative potential in daily life.
28. What task were participants asked to finish in the experiment?
A. Create flawless artistic masterpieces.
B. Do daily creative assignments consistently.
C. Stay away from all possible errors strictly.
D. Assess others’ imaginative writing works.
29. What can we conclude from the experimental findings?
A. Inborn gift decides one’s creative potential ultimately.
B. Ordinary people barely make progress in creative training.
C. Breaking set thinking contributes to creative problem-solving.
D. Related life experience guarantees better creative performance.
30. What can be inferred about the barrier to creativity?
A. People lack enough time to carry out daily training.
B. Public praise discourages people from risky attempts.
C. Low intelligence stops people exploring new thoughts.
D. Rigid thinking mode roots in early educational guidance.
31. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A. Creativity stops growing as people grow older.
B. Only gifted persons are blessed with creative minds.
C. Creativity and intelligence belong to the same nature.
D. Ordinary people can tap creative potential through efforts.
D
Bite down on a perfectly ripe strawberry, and the pure sweetness of the juice hits you first. The strawberry-ness of a strawberry is hard to put into words. Still, even with your eyes closed, you know it instantly apart from a raspberry or a blueberry based on a swirl of perceptions that together form the complex and poignant flavor experience. That this experience happens immediately is a finely tuned dance of the senses that would be impossible without the brain as its choreographer (编舞者).
Taste and flavor aren’t the same thing. “When people say something tastes good, they usually mean its flavor is good, or its sensory properties are good,” says Robin Dando, associate professor of food science at Cornell University, where he studies how humans evaluate food using their senses. But a few minutes later, even he — an expert — starts slipping up in the middle of a conversation about defining these very terms; it’s a hard speaking habit to break. “I’m saying taste, and I’m dropping back into this language that I tell my students not to use,” he says, laughing.
How you cognitively perceive the world is a pretty poor representation of how the world is in reality. Watching television activates such a spell. The sound is coming out of the television speakers, separate from the moving image of a person talking. Because the sound and image come from roughly the same place in space and time, you experience the two sensory inputs as one event. Only a technical difficulty might ruin the illusion — anyone with a streaming service and a bad internet connection knows the vexation of hearing spoken words out of tune with a moving mouth.
The perception that flavor is born in the mouth is a typical daily illusion, a gastronomical (美食学的) trick the brain plays that hides how your body actually works. When you’re chewing that ripe strawberry, receptors (接收器) on the tongue relay chemical information about taste to the brain separately from receptors located in the nose, which also relays chemical information to the brain, but about smells. The brain receives both at about the same time and from almost the same place on the body. In doing this, the brain finely differentiates between information coming from the receptors at the back of the nose, those that sense chewing-related smells, and receptors at the front of the nose, those that sense smells in the environment. If the brain were to mix up the information from these two sets of receptors, you’d perhaps experience the unpleasant smell of mothballs as though it were coming from your mouth.
A lot of illusions make up perception, and in this case, the trickery makes a lot of sense. It’s basically imperfect physiology trying to do a better job at capturing reality.
32. What is Dando’s attitude towards misusing taste and flavor?
A. Opposed B. Supportive C. Cautious D. Unclear
33. What does the underlined word “vexation” probably mean in Para. 3?
A. Delight. B. Annoyance. C. Confusion. D. Unexpectedness.
34. When one chews the ripe strawberry, ________.
A. receptors on the nose can send taste information to the brain
B. receptors in the front nose can sense the chewing-related smell
C. the brain can roughly sense the information from the receptors
D. the brain can precisely identify the information from the nose

It is normal to feel worried and stressed during an exam period. Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject. That is why most people can understand your anxiety around the exam period. However, too much worrying could be the start of failure. Here are some tips to help you stay positive.
From attending classes to completing homework, the period leading to an exam is always a difficult process. This is why preparing well for the exam is key to ensure your efforts do not go fruitless. Going through practice questions beforehand never disappoints for any exam. For example, if you are a physician preparing for the USMLE exams, you could check for the USMLE practice questions before the real exam time just to familiarize yourself with the exam. By so doing, you are more guided on how and where exactly to review.
Although some exams are important and could determine the future of your academic life, it cannot determine your whole life. You might have done a thorough revision but still, the first paper ended up extremely tough for you. At this point, you can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.
It can be really motivating for you to know that you have something positive coming up right after going through a difficult exam time. Being able to plan for a trip or buy yourself a gift after an exam is awesome enough. The fact that you are able to face the exams should be encouraging enough and you should appreciate yourself for it.
Exams times are temporary(暂时的) and they are usually for a good course, In any case, you will only be dealing with the exams for a short time and so you should put all your time and energy there.
40. According to the passage, why is it understandable to be anxious around the exam period?
41. What does the author advise us to do when the first paper is rather difficult?
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
>It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results.
43. Please briefly present your ways to stay positive during an exam period.(In about 40 words)

C 25. C 26. B 27. B

B 29. C 30. D 31. D
根据第二段“Researchers carried out a two-month experiment targeting ordinary college students with no artistic foundation or creative experience.
根据第三段实验结论部分最后一句“Those brave enough to break traditional fixed thinking patterns can more easily work out creative solutions to problems. (敢于打破传统固有思维模式的人,更容易想出有创意的解决办法。)”可知,打破固有思维有助于创造性地解决问题。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Even so, plenty of people struggle to develop their inner creativity. The biggest obstacle comes from the fear of failure and negative comments from others. Since early childhood, people are guided to chase standard answers and stay away from mistakes. This educational habit slowly traps people’s thoughts within rigid boundaries. (即便如此,很多人依旧难以培养内心的创造力。最大的阻碍来自对失败的恐惧以及他人的负面评价。从小,人们就被引导去追求标准答案、规避错误。这种教育习惯慢慢把人的思维禁锢在僵化边界里。)”可知,从小被引导追求标准答案、规避错误的教育习惯,把人们的思维禁锢在僵化边界里,可以推断出僵化的思维模式源于早期教育引导。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“As long as ordinary people keep practicing bravely and daring to try new things, everyone can discover and unlock their hidden creative potential in daily life. (只要普通人勇敢坚持练习、敢于尝试新事物,每个人都能在日常生活中发掘并释放自己潜藏的创造潜能。)”并结合全文可知,从文章中可以得出的结论是普通人可以通过努力发掘创造潜能。

A 33. B 34. D
根据第二段中的“ “I’m saying taste, and I’m dropping back into this language that I tell my students not to use,” he says, laughing.(“我嘴上说着taste,却又不自觉用上了我告诫学生不要使用的表述”他笑着说道。)”
根据第三段中的“Only a technical difficulty might ruin the illusion — anyone with a streaming service and a bad internet connection knows the vexation of hearing spoken words out of tune with a moving mouth.(只有技术故障才会打破这种错觉——用过流媒体且网络不好的人都体会过口型和语音不同步带来的vexation。)”
根据第四段中的“In doing this, the brain finely differentiates between information coming from the receptors at the back of the nose, those that sense chewing-related smells, and receptors at the front of the nose, those that sense smells in the environment.(在此过程中,大脑能够精细区分两类信息:一类来自鼻腔后部的感受器,这类感受器感知咀嚼产生的气味;另一类来自鼻腔前部的感受器,这类感受器感知周围环境中的气味。)”

40. Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject.
41. You can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.
42. It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results.
Because it is not getting the exxpected results that motivates you. And it is after going through a difficult exam time that motivates you.
43. First, give yourself a good psychological hint that you should be positive and optimistic to deal with the exam. Second, relax yourself properly and don't always keep nervous. Third, don't be afraid to fail the exam.
根据文章第一段中的“Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject. That is why most people can understand your anxiety around the exam period.”(考试表明进步,而不及格可能意味着在同一门课程或科目上落后。 Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject.。
根据第三段中的“You might have done a thorough revision but still, the first paper ended up extremely tough for you. At this point, you can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.”(你可能已经做了一个彻底的修改,但是,第一张试卷对你来说还是很难。 You can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.。
根据第四段中的“It can be really motivating for you to know that you have something positive coming up right after going through a difficult exam time.”(在经历了一场艰难的考试之后,你知道有一些积极的事情要来,这会给你很大的动力。)可知,在句子“It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results.”中,“when you achieve expected results.” It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results. Because it is not getting the exxpected results that motivates you. And it is after going through a difficult exam time that motivates you.。
根据题干“Please briefly present your ways to stay positive during an exam period.”(请简单介绍一下在考试期间保持积极心态的方法。) First, give yourself a good psychological hint that you should be positive and optimistic to deal with the exam. Second, relax yourself properly and don't always keep nervous. Third, don't be afraid to fail the exam.。

Dear Jim,
I’m glad to hear you’re interested in the We-Media video creation and release activity held in our school.
This activity aims to display our vibrant campus life, provide a stage where students can show their creativity, improve our media production skills and enrich our after-school life. Our team divided tasks clearly: some filmed campus views, lively classes and wonderful club activities, while others wrote scripts and did editing. We exchanged ideas daily and spent two weeks polishing every detail.
When I took part in this activity, I deeply felt the power of teamwork and spotted many warm little beauties in our daily campus life. Winning the first prize made all our efforts pay off.
Yours,
Li Hua
