Dear David,
I feel sad because my classmates make fun of me for being overweight (超重的). I worry a lot about how I look because most people think girls should be thin and pretty. This makes me feel bad about myself. What should I do?
Junjun
Dear Junjun,
I feel your pain. When I was in school, I was very overweight and had a really hard time. I felt so low about myself at times. And I know, for girls that can be even harder. I’ll share what helped me and maybe it can help you too.
When I was about 13 years old, I discovered an after-school drama (戏剧) club. I was good at drama and it brought me out of my shell (突破自我). I learned I had good qualities (素质). I could feel proud of myself and love myself, no matter what I looked like. After that, my confidence helped me out at school too. People started to see there was more to me. For the first time in my life, I started to become popular, whether overweight or not.
What I’m trying to say is that if you can be proud of yourself and love yourself for your good qualities, other people can’t hurt you. Be proud of your good points and hold your head up high. And I’m sure you’re beautiful too in your own way, inside and out.
David

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses (长处和短处). It’s easy to feel proud of what we’re good at, but it’s hard to admit our weaknesses. However, recognising and working on our weaknesses is an important step toward growth.
For example, imagine a student named Lily. She was good at maths but struggled with English. At first, she felt embarrassed and avoided practising English. But one day, her teacher told her, “It’s okay not to be perfect. What matters is that you try to improve.” Lily decided to face her weakness instead of giving up. She started reading English books, practising speaking, and asking for help when she didn’t understand. Over time, her English improved, and she felt more confident.
Facing our weaknesses isn’t easy, but it helps us become better. It’s important to remember that no one is perfect. Everyone has something they need to work on. By accepting our weaknesses and taking small steps to improve, we can grow stronger and more capable.
