By the year 2100, we will live on Mars (火星). Here is what life will be like.
First, our spaceships are too slow to take large numbers of people to Mars—it takes months. However, by 2100, spaceships can take us to Mars in two or three days!
Second, people need food, water, and air to live. Although there is no soil (土壤) on Mars, scientists should be able to grow many plants on Mars. ________ However, can these plants give water to us? There is no answer now.
Third, there is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars attracts us much less than the Earth does. It isn’t a good thing for us because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To stop this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.
Last, life on Mars will be better because there will be no school. Every student will have a computer at home. It is connected to the Internet. They can study, do their homework, and do exercise in the online schools. However, life on Mars may not be better than that on the Earth today. Food will not be as delicious as it is today. Also, space travel will make many people feel bad.
19. Which of the following is right for “________” in Paragraph 3?
A. No animals will live there. B. They will get light from the sun.
C. They will give us food and air. D. They will change the temperature there.
20. What does the underlined word “attracts” possibly mean?
A. Pulls. B. Pushes. C. Gives. D. Misses.
21. Why does the writer say life on Mars will be better?
A. Because the food will be more delicious there.
B. Because students will attend online schools there.
C. Because people will enjoy space travels.
D. Because all the computers will be connected to the Internet.
22. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How Will People Travel to Mars? B. What Will Life Be Like on Mars?
C. When Will All People Live on Mars? D. Where Will People Live in the Future?
C
Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor (味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions’ great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals that improve your ability to fight off illness and you have fewer chances of getting ill.
No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut an onion, irritating chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.
Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions.
●Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes.
●Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes.
●Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes.
If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don’t worry. Scientists think that if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion’s chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears “happy tears”.
23. Why can onions help you fight off illness?
A. Because they have different colors. B. Because they have many uses in cooking.
C. Because they have a great taste. D. Because they have special chemicals.
24. Why do your eyes make tears when you cut onions?
A. To improve physical condition. B. To stop common diseases.
C. To wash away irritating chemicals. D. To cause terrible pain.
25. What can you do to stop crying according to the text?
①Cut the onion under running water.
②Use a fan to blow air over the onion while cutting.
③Cover the onion with a piece of cloth as you cut it.
④Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
26. What does the underlined word “resilient” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Tired. B. Weak. C. Sad. D. Strong.
D
Picture this: Students pass their school work through different hands, from their group leader to the class representative (课代表) and finally to the teacher. It might not sound too difficult, but sometimes it can go wrong and take a lot of time.
To deal with this problem, Zhang Xirui from Shenzhen came up with a useful tool — a smart homework collection robot. This won him first prize in the 20th Guangdong Provincial Children’s Invention Awards.
The robot uses radio frequency identification (RFID,射频识别) technology — a reader and a special tag (标签) that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and know what it is looking for. Each student’s notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject. Students only need to put their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” each notebook, reads its tag and takes it out of the name list. “Teachers can check who hasn’t handed in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi,” the 13-year-old student said. The robot is the second-generation (第二代) model made by Zhang. Now, he’s planning to develop a third-generation and hopes to use ultra-high-frequency (超高频) radio technology to read lots of RFID tags from far away. That means if you stick a special tag on your notebook, the robot can read the information from a thick stack (堆) of notebooks at once. Zhang believes this is the key to how artificial intelligence can make life easier for us.
Zhang dreams of becoming a scientist when he grows up. “I have tried making model airplanes and other creative projects. Inventing has brought me joy and happiness,” he said.
27. Why did Zhang Xirui invent a smart collection robot?
A. Because his father was a scientist.
B. Because he was the class representative.
C. Because his teacher asked him to do that.
D. Because passing students’ school work could go wrong and take a lot of time.
28. How does the robot work?
a. The machine reads the notebook’s tag. b. The machine takes the notebook out of the name list.
c. The machine “sees” the notebook. d. Students only need to put their notebooks on the robot.
A. d→c→a→b B. d→b→c→a C. a→b→c→d D. c→b→d→a
29. How do teachers know who hasn’t handed in homework?
A. By touching the robot. B. By turning on the computer.
C. By calling Zhang Xirui. D. By connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi.
30. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A Smart Robot Helper at School B. A Kind Boy
C. A Fun Project D. A Science Report

根据后文“He thought this was the funniest thing ever”可知,他觉得这件事很有趣,所以是笑着问,laugh“笑”符合语境。
根据“I have done it with Mom a million times before”可知,做过很多次,所以不难,difficult“困难的”符合语境。
clean...off...

C 20. A 21. B 22. B
根据第四段后文“It isn’t a good thing for us because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space.”
根据最后一段“Last, life on Mars will be better because there will be no school...They can study, do their homework, and do exercise in the online schools.”
A. Tired. B. Weak. C. Sad. D. Strong.
D 24. C 25. B 26. D

根据第二段“Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.”
根据文中提到的三种防止流泪的方法:“Cut the onion under running water.”对应①“流水下切洋葱”;“Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it.”对应②“切的时候用风扇吹走洋葱附近的空气”;“Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting.”
根据最后一段“if you cut more onions…So the tears will not last long.”
