It’s not common for student-led inventions to make international news. But when a project brings real connection to people’s lives, it makes sense the world takes notice.
Elly Savatia, a senior student from Kenya, has created Terp 360, a web-based app that translates spoken language into sign language using AI-powered 3D images. It’s a bit like Google Translate — but designed specifically to give deaf users real-time sign language help, without the need for a human interpreter (翻译).
“To work, study or see a doctor, you have to communicate,” Savatia explained. “But the deaf community is often left behind.” He spent months recording common sign language moves and testing if the app’s translations were clear — closing this gap was his main goal.
Earlier this month, the invention got international recognition. Savatia got £50,000 from the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering, winning the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation (创新). His project beat three other finalists from across Africa. The judges were impressed not just by the technology, but more by its real effect. “What really stood out is the level of innovation,” shares Rebecca Enonchong, the head of the judging panel (评审团). “It shows Africans can use advanced technology to solve problems, not just in Africa but around the world.”
What makes Terp 360 so powerful isn’t just the technology. It’s the heart behind it. Savatia developed the app together with Kenyan deaf people, making sure it fits their real needs. Now it supports Kenyan Sign Language and Swahili. He plans to add more, like Ugandan, Rwandan, South African, British and American Sign Languages by 2027.
And that’s what makes this story so heartening: caring for others in action. In a world full of digital noise, Terp 360 reminds us that technology can still serve something deeply human — the simple but powerful act of understanding each other.
4. What is Terp 360 mainly designed for?
A. Recording Kenyan sign languages. B. Translating sign language to texts.
C. Offering speech-to-sign translation. D. Teaching international sign languages.
5. What impressed the judges most about Terp 360?
A. Its advanced technology alone. B. Its practical influence on people.
C. Its large number of recorded signs. D. Its special design for African users.
6. What helps Savatia make sure Terp 360 meets users’ needs?
A. Funding from the UK Academy. B. Support from the local government.
C. Teaming up with the deaf community. D. Recognition from global organizations.
7. Which of the following can best describe Savatia?
A. Creative and kind-hearted. B. Curious and humorous.
C. Brave and responsible. D. Confident and outgoing.

To visitors, Venice is a beautiful picture of historic buildings, waterways, bell towers, red roofs and a large winged lion, the symbol of the city, standing on the buildings across the city. Possibly the most famous lion is a bronze statue (青铜雕像) in the Piazzetta near St. Mark’s Square, and now, researchers think the statue was made in China.
After studying samples (样品) from the lion statue using lead isotope (铅同位素) tests, researchers from northern Italy’s University of Padua found that the bronze used to create the statue came from the Yangtze River in China, according to a study published in the journal Antiquity.
This, they said, would explain why the 4-meter-long and 2.2-meter-high statue had a strange style. People once thought it was made locally, in Syria or Anatolia. According to the researchers, although it was placed near St. Mark’s Square in the 13th century, the lion looks more like Chinese art from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) than works from medieval Mediterranean Europe. They point to the shape of the lion and marks left by removing its old horns (角).
“It is possible that Marco Polo’s father and uncle, during the four years they spent at the palace of Kublai Khan on their first journey, bought the lion statue,” the researchers said, adding that the visit probably took place between 1264 and 1268.
The animal was actually a zhenmushou — a big, fierce, lion-like tomb guard from the Tang Dynasty. Once the Polos sent the statue back to Italy after their visit to Mongol, it was probably changed to look like the symbol of St. Mark. Workers took off its horns and added a “wig”
“As there is a dearth of written information, why and how the lion was moved to Venice is still unclear. But we can now consider it as a symbol of how connected the medieval world was,” the researchers added.
8. What did the researchers find about the bronze lion statue?
A. It copied a traditional Chinese art form.
B. Its bronze has something to do with China.
C. Its horns were removed before it was sent to Venice.
D. It was actually a stone guard used in Kublai Khan’s palace.
9. Why were the horns of the statue removed possibly?
A. To follow the local law.
B. To ship the statue more easily.
C. To match the taste of the Polos’.
D. To make the statue go with another symbol.
10. What does the underlined word “dearth” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Balance. B. Influence. C. Absence. D. Wealth.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The way of making a lion statue.
B. The journey of Marco Polo and his family.
C. The different styles of lion statues in Venice.
D. The true birthplace of the famous Venice lion statue.

For the first time since the Apollo era, humans are preparing not just to visit the moon, but to live and work there for weeks, months, and eventually years. A new era of deep space exploration is arriving. Rather than brief “flags and footprints” missions, the US Artemis program aims, finally, to establish a lasting human presence on and around the moon, beginning at the lunar South Pole.
Artemis Ⅱ carrying four astronauts finished its 10-day mission around the moon in April 2026. As the first manned flight, it is designed to test that life support systems, navigation (导航), heat protection, and deep space operations function safely. NASA will keep investing in a lunar base to support longer stays.
However, living on the moon will challenge every organ system in the human body. The lunar environment exposes (暴露) astronauts to the combined set of physical, chemical, biological, and psychological stress encountered beyond Earth. These include reduced gravity, long-time exposure to cosmic radiation, extreme temperature swings, harmful lunar dust, and disturbed sleep-wake cycles.
The good news is that humans are highly adaptable. Scientists are using safe methods to support adaptation. Exercise is the key to keeping astronauts healthy, and lunar systems must be redesigned for partial gravity. Personalized nutrition (营养) also plays an important role in protecting bones, muscles and the immune system. New experiments are being tested to support cardiovascular health.
Living on the moon is demanding but exciting. The moon is not just a destination, it is a test of our biology. If we can stay healthy and productive on the moon, we will move closer to becoming a truly spaceflight species. Artemis demonstrates that exploration now centers around sustainability (可持续性), adaptability, and understanding ourselves as deeply as the worlds we seek to explore. In mastering how to live on the lunar surface, humanity may well uncover deep understanding about life on Earth alongside our destiny among the stars.
12. What’s the final purpose of NASA’s Artemis program?
A. To make humans live on the moon. B. To establish a lunar research base.
C. To test the lunar environment. D. To explore planets near the moon.
13. Why is “every organ system” mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To prove there are no living creatures on the moon.
B. To stress lunar environment’s threats to human health.
C. To demonstrate the mental effects of longer lunar stay.
D. To show the urgent need to protect the immune system.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards living on the moon?
A. Doubtful. B. Unfavorable. C. Uncaring. D. Hopeful.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Humans will soon move to live on other planets.
B. The moon is the last boundary (边界) of space exploration.
C. Lunar living helps us understand Earth and human future.
D. Space exploration focuses on sustainability and adaptability.

How to Make Allowance (零花钱) Teach Money Smarts
Most parents agree kids should learn about money before they’re let loose on the world, but “money smarts” isn’t exactly a standard bedtime story. And allowance isn’t just a weekly payout. ____16____ Handled well, it teaches budgeting (预算), saving and decision-making.
Setting the ground rules.
Will you give cash weekly or monthly? Should allowance be tied to housework? Experts are a little divided here. ____17____ Others believe tying money to tasks can make children view family contributions as optional. Whatever you decide, making it clear is your best friend — when, how much, what conditions, and what happens if they “forget” to do their part.
How much is enough?
____18____ The right amount depends on your family’s budget, your child’s age, and what you expect them to cover. A common guideline is £1 per year of age each week. But if your child is expected to pay for school lunches, or birthday gifts, change accordingly.
____19____
Normalise money talk. No need for a TED Talk — simply ask, “Got any plans for your cash?” Or, “Anything you’re saving up for?” Share stories about your own money mistakes — like the time you spent your birthday money on novelty socks and immediately regretted it. ____20____
Teaching kids about money is a series of small moments, with enough mistakes and laughs. Allowance offers a steady way to practice — through saving, spending, giving, and learning from everyday choice.
A. No exact answer here.
B. Discuss but don’t lecture.
C. Should kids spend money freely?
D. But setting a specific goal makes saving real.
E. Some say kids should earn allowance by doing housework.
F. Kids appreciate honesty, and it keeps the conversation real.
G. It can be a mini training ground for real-life money management.

As the bell rang for the end of school, Lily packed her violin case, feeling a heavy weight in her chest. The school music competition was only a week away, but she still couldn’t play the final part of her piece smoothly. Every time she reached the difficult note, her fingers would freeze, and her confidence faded a little more.
On her way home, she passed the old community park, where she often saw an elderly man sitting on a bench, holding a worn-out violin case. He never played, but he would stare at the violin inside as if it held precious memories. Lily had always wanted to talk to him, but she was too shy to break the silence.
One afternoon, Lily couldn’t stand her frustration any longer. She sat on a nearby bench and took out her violin, trying to practice the most difficult part. But as usual, she messed up, and tears rolled down her cheeks. She put her violin back in the case, feeling hopeless.
“Don’t give up so easily, dear.” A gentle voice came from beside her. It was the elderly man. He smiled warmly and opened his own case, revealing a well-loved violin with a faded music sheet. “This piece used to be my favorite,” he said, pointing to the sheet.
Lily looked at the music sheet — it was the same piece she was practicing! She was surprised and asked why he never played. The man sighed, saying he had hurt his hand years ago and could no longer hold the bow (琴弓). “But I still come here to listen to the music in my heart,” he added softly.
Before leaving, the man took out the faded music sheet and handed it to her. “This might help you,” he said. “It has my notes on it. Remember, music is not about being perfect — it’s about putting your heart into it.” Lily thanked him, holding the sheet tightly, and noticed a small signature at the bottom: “Thomas, former violinist.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That night, Lily spread out the music sheet and studied Mr. Thomas’s notes carefully.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. D

【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“why and how the lion was moved to Venice is still unclear.(关于这尊飞狮像为何以及如何被运至威尼斯,至今仍不清楚)”可知,关于雕像的相关信息是缺乏书面资料的。由此可推测,划线词dearth 意为“缺乏、没有”,与 absence 含义相近。故选C。

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】范文
That night, Lily spread out the music sheet and studied Mr. Thomas’s notes carefully. His handwriting was neat, and each difficult part was marked with small reminders and explanations. Following the notes, she picked up her violin and tried again. This time, she slowed down, focusing on the emotion rather than perfection. When she played the difficult note, her fingers moved smoothly, and she approached it with much more confidence. She practiced late into the night, with Mr. Thomas’s words echoing in her mind.
On the day of the competition, Lily walked onto the stage with confidence. She glanced at the audience and spotted Mr. Thomas sitting in the front row, smiling at her. Taking a deep breath, she started playing. Every note was full of feeling, and she played the final part successfully. When she finished, the audience erupted in applause. After the competition, Mr. Thomas told her proudly that she had played it better than he ever could. Lily realized that the faded music sheet was more than just notes — it was a gift of hope and courage.
