The Dong people have lived in the green mountains of southern China for centuries. Their villages, hidden among terraced rice fields, hold many traditions that mix beauty and practicality.
Every Dong village has two special buildings. The Drum Tower, standing the tallest, is where villagers meet and make important decisions. Built with interlocking wooden pieces, its shape shows unity (团结). Nearby, the Wind-Rain Bridge serves both as a bridge and a community place. Its roof (屋顶) protects people from sun and rain, while carved (雕刻的) dragons show respect for nature.
Music breathes life into Dong culture. UNESCO has protected their secret: the Dong Chorus (合唱团). Without any instruments, singers create harmonies (和声) that sound like running water. Grandmothers teach children these songs from age 5, passing down stories about love and harvests (收获).
The New Rice Festival is the happiest time. After the first harvest, villagers taste new sticky rice in bamboo. Women wear skirts with silver butterflies, symbolizing good luck. Men beat drums during bullfights (斗牛)—a tradition where bulls push each other until one steps back.
Dong meals connect people with nature. Zongzi is common. Sour fish, their special dish, is made by keeping fresh fish with rice for months. A saying goes: “Eat sour fish when guests arrive, and your friendship will last longer.”
Dong villages are built facing south. Wooden houses stand on 6-foot-tall pillars (支柱): the ground floor keeps farm animals safe, while the upper floor stays dry during floods. Even today, villagers add a new pillar to their homes when a baby is born, showing how life grows.
Though some young people work in cities, they return for big festivals. Schools now teach Dong songs besides math, and experts help repair old Drum Towers. As one elder said: “Our culture is like the rice terraces—everyone must care for it.”
16. What can we learn from the two special buildings in every Dong village?
A. They are made with the help of modern technology.
B. They are places where villagers celebrate festivals.
C. They show the sense of family of the Dong people.
D. They show Dong people’s unity and respect for nature.
17. Why is the Dong Chorus special?
A. It creates bamboo instruments. B. Singers make natural sounds like water.
C. UNESCO experts created the songs. D. Children learn songs from their fathers.
18. What cultural value do bullfights, sour fish and house pillars mainly show?
A. Respecting nature while meeting daily needs. B. The importance of following strict rules.
C. Making money through traditional arts. D. The need to forget old customs.
19. What can we infer (推断) about the Dong’s future from the last paragraph?
A. Their culture will be changed soon. B. They balance old and new ways wisely.
C. Young people no longer value traditions. D. Experts will rebuild all traditional houses.
20. How does the writer mainly organize the text?
A. By comparing past and present traditions.
B. By following the order of seasons in a year.
C. By explaining problems faced by the Dong people.
D. By describing different cultures (buildings, music, food, etc.).
C
Complain (抱怨) Politely
Not everything goes the way you want it to. You may go to a restaurant and order a nice meal. But your order is wrong or not cooked properly. You may buy a product that breaks the next day. ____21____ However, if you speak angrily to people, they will become defensive (自卫的). Then they are less likely to help you. A more effective (有效的) way to get what you want is to stay calm.
Use polite language and friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases such as, “I’m sorry to bother you, but, ...” or “Excuse me, but could you...?” For example, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable.” Phrasing your complaint as a question also helps. ____22____ “Could you help me? I just bought this phone case yesterday, but it’s cracked.”
____23____. There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use the phrase, “I know this isn’t your fault, but...” or “There has been a misunderstanding.” ____24____. Blaming people isn’t as important as getting a problem fixed!
There are honest mistakes; but at times someone may try to take advantage of you. In that case, don’t say “Hey! You’re trying to cheat me!” Instead, use the phrase, “I understood that...” For example, “I understood that the service charge was included in the price.” Then give the person a chance to answer.
If you don’t get what you want with polite conversation, ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. ____25____.
A. When trying to correct a problem, don’t blame (责备) the person you’re talking to.
B. People like to be asked rather than told.
C. But usually you’ll find that polite words and a smile will resolve a situation
D. These kinds of experiences make you want to complain.
E. These phrases let people know you are only angry at the situation.
F. Consumers should complain in person whenever possible.

China’s “four great new inventions” in modern times have made the daily life of the public more and more convenient. They are the high-speed railway (HSR), shopping online, shared bikes and mobile phone payment. Living in Hong Kong, I knew them from the papers, the TV and the Internet. But last month I had the chance to experience all of them.
As usual, the golden week stopped the traffic. (A) I found it hard to get a railway ticket anywhere in the train stations. But I bought a train ticket to Beijing on the Internet and paid for it through Zhifubao. It was even cheaper than it was bought in the station. Then we got on the high-speed train. I was shocked at its speed and quietness. There was no noise which the train made while running. It was reported that China has the longest high-speed railway in the world, which is regarded as a “name card” for China.
China’s HSR has also gone abroad. In 2014, China finished building its first foreign high-speed rail in Turkey. In June 2015, China and Russia agreed to build the 770 km of high-speed railway connecting Moscow and Kazan. In October 2015, China helped Indonesia to build a high-speed rail between Jakarta and Bandung.
Did I feel bored during the trip on the train? Not at all. I bought many cheap and good things in Taobao and Tmall on the Internet through my mobile phone. It’s amazing that there are oceans of products in Taobao and Tmall.
Soon we arrived in Beijing. We got on a bus near the train station. (B)下车后,我的朋友告诉我公共汽车站离他的家很远。I thought we would have to spend much money going to his home on a taxi, but it seemed that he wasn’t worried about that. He showed me some bikes on the side of the street. They are called shared bikes. We only need to use our mobile phones to scan the Quick Response code on shared bikes, then we could ride the bikes anywhere we wanted to go. It was so cool!

If you have ever ordered a cup of hot coffee or tea to be delivered (递送) in the winter, it was probably cold when it arrived because of the freezing weather. Wouldn’t it be great if, instead of arriving from a delivery person, you received it in half the time from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)—commonly known as a drone (无人机) right outside your window and was still hot? It’s all happening now, as several Chinese cities, including Shenzhen in Guangdong province, Shanghai and Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, began using UAVs for deliveries. Technology is serving people faster than expected.
Meituan was among the first group to start UAV trials (测验) in the city. “Technologies like UAVs are expected to play a greater role within a three-kilometer serving area,” said Mao Yinian, head of Meituan’s UAV business. According to Mao, the drone can fly at a height of less than 120 meters at a flight speed of 10 meters per second (每秒). It can carry a box of 3 kg and stay in air for up to 20 minutes. “In the next five to 10 years, the cost of unmanned deliveries will be the same to that of human deliveries, and the user experience brought by UAVs will be greatly improved,” he said.
In order to improve the experience of delivery, Meituan started the study of the UAV delivery service in 2017. In 2021, Meituan completed its first drone delivery in Shenzhen. As of December 2022, Meituan’s drone delivery service has landed in Shenzhen and Shanghai, covering 18 office buildings, serving about 20,000 homes, and completing more than 120,000 orders. The usual delivery time of Meituan's UAV in 2022 was about 12 minutes. It is nearly 150 percent faster than traditional delivery models, saving users more than 30,000 hours of waiting time.
