Dear Peter,
Delighted to support your school's Chinese Culture Week! I am recording a 3-minute video introducing the Mid-Autumn Festival, a celebration I find most enchanting. My video will unfold in two parts. Visually, I'll capture families bonding over mooncakes and children parading with lanterns, which vividly embodies our core values of reunion and gratitude. Then, the narration of Chang'e's tale will take center stage, weaving in themes of devotion to add a poetic layer. I settled on this festival specifically as it mirrors our reverence for family bonds and natural beauty. With its rich folklore, it is bound to strike a chord with your classmates, thus offering them a genuine glimpse into the emotional depth of Chinese culture.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this outline. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

A human chain of nearly 300 residents lined up from the old bookstore to the new one. Book after book traveled hand to hand along the sidewalk. Michelle recognized the retired teacher who came in every Tuesday, passing picture books with a gentle smile. “I read this in high school,” a teenager said, holding up a worn novel. “This one is signed by the author,” an elderly woman added. Laughter and memories flowed like the books themselves. In less than two hours, all 9,100 books had reached their new home. Michelle's three employees stood at the door, tears streaming down their faces.
When the last book found its place on the new shelf, Michelle stepped forward, holding back tears. “I almost closed this store,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I thought I would be boxing these books alone. But you turned my darkest day into something I will never forget.” A young mother stepped forward. “This store belongs to all of us,” she said. One by one, hands went up — offers to volunteer, to help, to keep the story going. That day, the community didn't just move 9,100 books. They carried their own story into a new home.

W: Tony, can you give me a lift to school on your way to work?
M: I'm afraid I can't. My car had a flat tyre yesterday. Now it's in the garage. You can carpool with others.
W: Oh, no. It's hard to find a car in the rush hour. Luckily, the subway station is an easy walk from here.
(Text 2)
W: Excuse me. Do we have to take our luggage from our room before 11:00 am.?
M: Normally it's at 11:00 a.m., yes, but you can have a late checkout until 2:00 p.m. if you like.
W: Great. That will give me more time to pack up my suitcase. I think I can be finished by 1:00 p.m.
(Text 3)
M: Good afternoon. I'm phoning about the position advertised in this morning's paper.
W: Oh, yes. Hold on please. I'll put you through to the manager.
(Text4)
M: I see you've bought a new laptop.
W: Yes, it starts up quickly, though to be fair the old one isn't slow. I began taking this new one to work in the end as it's so much lighter.
(Text 5)
M: Have you heard about that new computer game Space Giants?
W: Yeah, I read about it in the gaming magazine Gameworld.
M: Everyone's talking about it on the Internet too. I prefer to see if new games are popular with my mates though -that will give me a clearer idea of whether they'll be any good.
(Text 6)
W: Can you help me check these? They need to go out this afternoon.
M: Sure. Are they for your study abroad trip?
W: Yes. I need to get all my application forms in the mail today.
M: All right. Give me the checklist.
W: Here you are.
M: OK. Let's see. Ur, you're going to Canada? I thought it was America.
W: Yeah. I have a relative there. Actually, I wanted to go to Oxford University in England, but I didn't pass the exam.
(Text 7)
M: Hi, Jane, you have been looking pale ever since you came back from Philippines.
W: I do feel ill. I think it's a bad cold.
M: Maybe you are not used to the weather conditions.
W: Something like this, and the hot food there.
M: The important thing is you have been too busy recently.
W: Yes, I need to have a good rest. Can I have a day off?
M: Of course. You have finished the task a week ahead of schedule.
W: Thanks, I think I will go to see the doctor first.
M: Take a good break.
(Text 8)
M: What is the problem, lady?
W: The main issue is my fridge — it's just not cooling. And could you also have a look at the bathroom? The water heater and washing machine don't work well either.
M: Okay, I'll start with the fridge and then check the bathroom issues.
W: That's great.
M: Checking done. Your fridge just needs a new part. The water heater is also an easy fix, but the washing machine will need to be replaced.
W: What will happen to my old one if I replace it?
M: We can take it away for recycling at no extra charge. If you'd like to donate it, we can contact a local charity.
W: Recycling seems a better choice!
(Text 9)
M: Good evening. My name is Henry Stone. I've made a reservation.
W: Just one moment, sir. I'll check... I'm sorry, there's no record of your reservation. When did you book?
M: Last week. I booked a standard room for the 16th of January online.
W: I do apologize but something seems to have gone wrong.
M: Well, can you just give me a room anyway?
W: Neither standard rooms nor single rooms are free, sir. There are only luxury rooms. They're $350 per night.
M: $350! But the room I booked was $60.
W: I’m sorry, sir. Well, why don't you try calling another hotel?
M: I’m sorry but I don't think that's fair. I made a reservation. I have an email from you to prove it.
W: I'm very sorry, sir. There must have been a problem with the computer.
M: Can I make a suggestion? Why don't you offer me the luxury room for the price of standard room? After all, it's your hotel that made the mistake so you should find a solution.
W: Well, I'm not sure, sir. I'll have a word with my manager. OK, sir. My manager says that is fine.
M: Great. Thank you. And can I get an extra bed if we need one?
W: Yes, of course. Could you please show me your ID card?
M: Sure. Here it is.
W: OK. Here's your key card.

Hello, my name's David Watts. Today I'm going to talk about remote working in the future. Companies are unwilling to accept this for a variety of reasons -because it's not what they're used to, because they're afraid their employees will be lazy if they're not in the office, because they just don't see the benefits in allowing their employees to work from home - but those companies that have accepted remote working, and I mean gladly accepted, have seen it for what it is: an excellent opportunity to develop. At my company, about 50% of our full-time, permanent employees now work from home at least three days a week, and the other 50% work from home one day a week, with the exception of departments such as finance, HR and reception. And you know what that means? It means we can rent a smaller space and lower our monthly overhead costs. It means our employees who have children no longer need to quit their job to take care of them. They can stay at home with their kids, look after them and at the same time respond to phone calls and emails. It means that our employees are happy, because they save money and time and avoid the stress of traveling to work, and we are happy because they are doing their job better as a result of their flexibility.

Safe Use of the School Fitness Room Treadmill
The school fitness room has introduced a new treadmill (跑步机) for students. Although it is easy to operate, students should not step onto it without reading the safety label first. The machine should be used only after basic instruction. If you feel faint, dizzy or in pain during exercise, stop at once and tell the teacher or fitness room staff.
★Treadmill Quick Guide
STAGE
WHAT TO DO
Before starting
Stand on the two top steps located on each side of the running belt.
Safety check
Attach the emergency-stop clip to clothing.
Starting
Tap Quick Start and wait.
During exercise
Use handrails for support and balance.
Stopping
Press STOP to stop the running belt.
After use
Remove the emergency-stop key if asked.
★Treadmill Safety Information
★Key Reminders Before and After Use
The emergency-stop key is especially important. Before starting, attach the emergency-stop clip firmly to your clothing. Make sure the clip engages enough clothing so it does not fall off. The line should be free of knots and long enough for you to work out comfortably with the key in place. If you move too far back, the key can be pulled out of the console (控制台) and the treadmill will stop.
After exercise, students should leave the treadmill clean and safe for the next user. Wait until the belt has completely stopped, step onto the side steps, and wipe the console or handrails if necessary. The rule is simple: use the treadmill not only to train your body, but also to practise safe and responsible use of shared equipment.
21. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To compare treadmill safety features. B. To promote safe treadmill use.
C. To highlight a new fitness facility. D. To explain emergency-stop procedures.
22. Which action may be risky?
A. Stopping when you feel unwell. B. Setting 9 kph and 10% grade.
C. Ignoring abnormal machine noises. D. Holding the handrails when necessary.
23. Who is most likely to be protected by the emergency-stop clip?
A. A user who moves backward too far. B. A user who steps onto the side steps.
C. A user who clips it onto too little. D. A user who leaves knots in the line.

Posting photos of local plants may not seem like a normal way to success as a social media influencer. But Kyle Lybarger, born and raised in Alabama, has found unexpected Internet fame by introducing his followers to the overlooked world of southeastern plants.
In an interview, Lybarger credits his success to stubbornness, to a positive energy he inherited from his late dad and, largely, to not worrying about what others think. “I was a deer hunter, forester, a man posting about flowers,” he says. “You have to really care the least about what people think of you to do that.”
About a decade ago, Lybarger cleared a small area of land in a forest to grow plants whose fruits would attract deer and wild turkeys. He even applied some herbicide (除草剂) and cut down the surrounding trees to let in more light. The next summer, he found the additional sunlight brought a beautiful surprise: an amazing variety of wild flowers. After he posted the flowers on Facebook, a local botanist and science teacher got in touch, confirming some rare and vulnerable species, such as Alabama larkspur. Lybarger suddenly realized that the grassland he had killed was ideal for attracting wildlife itself.
This experience inspired him to dive into a body of research indicating that historically the Southeast was home to expansive grasslands as well as those wild flowers. It was then that Lybarger found his mission: to save the remaining grasslands and flora. Together with a botanist from Auburn University, he appealed on all the major social media platforms to forest owners and farmers to stop mowing (修剪草坪) and using herbicides. In 2023 he partnered with an artist to design a T-shirt featuring the rare plants, hoping to raise public awareness and help pay for conservation. The project ended up raising over $100,000 in less than a year, most of which went to his conservation efforts.
“My biggest contribution comes through education on social media, influencing people to grow the native plants that best support declining pollinators (授粉昆虫) and other insects.” he says, “One person, one yard, one-tenth of an acre can make a bigger difference than you think.”
24. According to Lybarger, he mainly owes his success to ______________.
A. his enthusiasm about native plants B. the development of internet industry
C. the spiritual support from his late dad D. his freedom from others' judgement
25. What led Lybarger to discover the value of the wild flowers?
A. His being brought up in Alabama. B. His being a sociable forester.
C. His working experience as a hunter. D. The feedback from a local botanist.
26. Why does the writer mention the money in paragraph 4?
A. To indicate the difficulty of their project. B. To show the artistic value of their design.
C. To prove the success of the project. D. To explain the ambition of his team.
27. What message does Lybarger want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Virtue is its own reward. B. Many drops make a shower.
C. Roses given, fragrance in hand. D. Wisdom begins with admitting your ignorance.

With its neon lights and mirrored ceilings, 886, a Taiwanese restaurant in New York's East Village, feels more like a nightclub. But on a recent Wednesday night, the shouts of “Pong!”and “Chow!” replaced the thudding beats. Dozens of young people gathered at this trendy spot not only for black-pepper beef and sesame noodles, but for rounds of mahjong (麻将). Long a pastime for older generations, mahjong is now attracting a younger, global crowd. Attendance at mahjong events worldwide has more than tripled in the past year, with regular gatherings from Berlin to Sydney. What explains this modern revival?
One key factor is popular culture. From Meghan Markle's Netflix TV show to the tension-filled mahjong scene in the film Crazy Rich Asians, the game is portrayed as strategic, stylish, and dramatic. Social media has amplified this: TikTok has seen a sharp rise of 70%in mahjong content, with users sharing tips, unboxing videos, and joyful moments of play.
Another appeal lies in its tangible, sensory nature. In a digital age, the physical act of handling the game pieces — their sound, texture, and visual appeal — offers a comforting“analogue pleasure,” as historian Annelise Heinz notes. Companies have tapped into this by producing artistically designed sets, with high-end brands like Hermes and Louis Vuitton even offering expensive versions.
Yet perhaps the deepest draw is the sense of community mahjong fosters. After periods of isolation (隔离), people are desiring meaningful in-person interaction. As Sarah Teng, founder of New York's Green Tile Social Club, explains, they sought activities that were “more than just eating or drinking.” Mahjong naturally creates space for conversation during tile shuffling, making it, in the words of event organizer Angie Lin, “the ultimate connector.”
Beyond fun, mahjong offers cognitive benefits. Regular play is linked to lower stress, better memory, and reduced depression among the elderly. For young players, then, embracing mahjong is not just a trend — it's an investment in social and mental well-being, proving that some traditions only grow richer with time.
28. How is the topic introduced in the first paragraph?
A. By presenting statistics. B. By describing a scene.
C. By explaining a process. D. By making comparisons.
29. The underlined phrase “tapped into” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______________.
A. paid attention to B. got rid of
C. taken advantage of D. moved away from
30. According to the passage, what is the most important reason for mahjong's modern revival?
A. Improved memory and reduced stress for the elderly.
B. Hands-on engagement in a screen-dominated world.
C. Frequent representation in popular movies and TV series.
D. Strengthened social bonds through collective participation.
31. What does the author mean in the last paragraph?
A. Some customs deepen in meaning as they age. B. Traditional entertainment deserves investment.
C. Old traditions are better than digital alternatives. D. Popular customs can make people richer with time.
D
When danger approaches, many creatures seem to follow the ancient proverb that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Researchers have recently found subtle ways that animals communicate with other species in this kind of cooperative defense agreement.
For example, a recent study in Nature Ecology & Evolution documented more than 20 bird species on four continents that let out similar “whining” calls when they spot brood parasites (寄生繁殖者) such as cuckoos. That call is recruiting (招募) individuals to come together against this common enemy.
At a field site in Australia, Kennerley has witnessed individuals from a dozen or more species attack a cuckoo in response to a chorus of whining calls. These mobs can be so ferocious that Kennerley and his colleagues need to cage the taxidermy cuckoo used in their experiments to protect it. Otherwise, the attacking birds would have “just completely torn it to pieces,” Kennerley says.
Many birds also share a common vocabulary for predators. Studies show that various songbirds — and even red squirrels — produce recognizable “seet” calls to warn of a raptor (猛禽) in flight. The calls are too high-pitched for raptors to hear well, so the raptors remain unaware as information about their arrival spreads through the forest. If the raptor approaches, songbirds switch to “mobbing” calls, a distinct vocalization that, as Greene puts it, “draws in the troops to drive that raptor away.”
But cooperative defense is not the only reason for cross-species communication. A recent study found that when seabirds with good vision, such as black-browed albatrosses, hunt with seabirds with strong senses of smell, such as white-chinned petrels, they both have far greater success at catching krill Unlike the seet and whining calls, however, it's unclear whether they're deliberately signaling to one another or “just randomly following other birds,” says study lead author Jesse Granger, an organismal biophysicist at Duke University.
But clearly, “very complex multispecies communication networks are pervasive (无处不在的),” he adds. “It
can save their lives.”
32. What is the main purpose of the “whining” calls made by birds?
A. To invite other species to join the chorus.
B. To warn their own species of approaching danger.
C. To spread information about potential food sources.
D. To seek cross-species help to fight common enemies.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Songbirds can encode their messages. B. Mobbing calls are hard to recognize.
C. Songbirds outperform raptors in hearing. D. Raptors share a vocabulary with songbirds.
34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The limits of the research methods. B. Another motivation for the interactions.
C. The potential risks of the communication D. The underlying logic of the defense strategy.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Mystery of Animal Language. B. The Strategy of Cooperative Defense.
C. The Secret of Cross-Species Communication. D. The complexity of Multi-species Communication.

“Feeling hungry all of a sudden? Whatever you fancy, it's just a tap away on food delivery apps. Sunday brunch plans cancelled? Skip the queues and get your favorite food delivered right to your door.” These are typical marketing lines that delivery platforms use daily to attract customers to place orders. 36
One main reason for choosing food delivery lies in its convenience. 37 There is no need to dress up, travel a long way to restaurants or wait in endless crowds. Time saved can be spent on leftover schoolwork and delayed housework. When convenience is prioritized, home delivery surely wins over eating out.
38 For introverts (内向的人), ordering food online is practically a must. Thanks to contactless delivery, we can ask riders to leave meals at the door handles and pick them up later. After getting food, we may curl up on the sofa in casual clothes and enjoy shows while eating, a comfortable experience hard to gain from dining outside.
Dine-out lovers claim delivery costs more with extra delivery fees and marked-up dish prices. 39 The extra payments actually serve to fairly reward hard-working delivery riders. Every extra penny helps support riders' livelihoods, which makes ordering delivery worthwhile.
All things considered, home delivery turns out to be a wiser choice. 40 It saves our energy, offers cozy enjoyment and helps feed delivery workers, leaving little reason to prefer dining out.
A. It helps escape tiring face-to-face communication.
B. Some people still prefer to dine in local restaurants.
C. And behind this choice are multiple practical benefits.
D. It saves us all the trouble of preparing for eating outside.
E. However, these extra fees are quite reasonable from another angle.
F. Some small restaurants lower prices to compete with online delivery services.
G. Despite ignoring these ads, most people still prefer ordering delivery to dining out.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a small town in Michigan, there stood an independent bookstore called Serendipity Books — a beloved gathering place for over twenty years. Children had learned to read in its cozy corners, surrounded by piles of picture books. Old friends had met there for coffee and conversation, losing themselves among the shelves on rainy afternoons. The owner, Michelle, had poured her heart into the store since 2017, working alongside three part-time employees who felt more like family.
Then came the news. The old building where the bookstore had stood for decades was scheduled for demolition (拆迁) to make way for a new development. Michelle had to move — but the only available space nearby was a smaller storefront just a block away. The thought of packing, transporting, and reorganizing over 9,100 books was paralyzing (令人瘫痪的).
Each book, after all, held a memory: the worn copy of a childhood favorite, the signed edition a customer had treasured for years. Hiring a moving company would cost thousands, money she simply didn't have. For weeks, Michelle lay awake at night, wondering if she should just close the doors forever.
She shared her despair with a few regular customers — a retired teacher who came in every Tuesday, a young mother whose daughter had learned to read there. ”I don't know how I'll ever move all these books,” she sighed (叹 气), her voice breaking. They nodded sympathetically but couldn't think of easy answers. Still, word began to spread through the town. People talked in the grocery store, at the school pickup line, over morning coffee.
The moving day came. Michelle stood outside the old store, staring at the endless shelves, her heart a knot of fear and hopelessness. She had no idea how she would get a single book to the new location, let alone nine thousand. She half-expected to spend the day alone, boxing and crying. Then she heard footsteps — first a few, then dozens, then a crowd. When she turned around, her breath caught in her throat.

Companies are unwilling to accept this for a variety of reasons because it's not what they're used to because they are afraid their employees will be lazy if they're not in the office, because they just don't see the benefits in allowing their employees to work from home. But those companies that have accepted remote working and I mean, gladly accepted have seen IT for what IT is an excEllent opportunity to develop at my company. About fifty percent of our full time, permanent employees now work from home at least three days a week, and the other fifty percent work from home one day a week, with the exception of departments such as finance, H, R, and reception. And you know what that means? That means we can rent a smaller space and lower our monthly overhead costs. IT means our employees who have children no longer need to quit their jobs to take care of them. They can stay at home with their kids, look after them and at the same time respond to phone calls and emails. IT means that our employees are happy because they save money in time and avoid the stress of travelling to work, and we are happy because they are doing their job Better as a result of their flexibility.
