The Maya (玛雅人) were good at math. They counted in groups of 20, not 10. They wrote numbers in columns going up. The bottom row was the “1s” column, the next row up was 20s, then 400s, and so on. For digits, they used a dot for 1, a line for 5, and a shell shape to show zero. Numbers 1 to 19 were written with a combination of lines and dots.
The number 1209 (three 400s + no 20s + nine 1s) would look like this:
A Maya village might keep a record of the pumpkins they harvested like this:
The Maya also kept three different calendars. The first divided the year into 18 months of 20 days each, plus a short month of 5 days. The short month was believed to be unlucky, a time when spirits walked.
The second calendar repeated every 260 days. This was used to plan celebrations and predict future. This calendar counted 13 months of 20 days each. Each date had its own set of 3 symbols (day, month, and year).
When talking about events long ago, they used a calendar called the “long count.” This covered about 5,125 years. Year 1 on this calendar was 3114 BCE on our calendar.
Each city and village had a calendar keeper, who was in charge of saying when to celebrate holidays and when to expect rain or plant crops. But farmers could probably also tell the time of the year from the sun and stars.
21. How many pumpkins did the Maya village harvest according to Figure 3?
A. 114. B. 409. C. 414. D. 439.
22. What could the “long count” calendar be used for?
A. Marking the unlucky days. B. Recording ancient events.
C. Dividing the year into 18 months. D. Predicting and making future plans.
23. Which learning project would this text be most suitable for?
A. Design a travel plan to the Maya ruins
B. Write a report on the Maya agriculture
C. Give a presentation on Maya artistic symbols
D. Make a poster of Maya scientific achievements

Li Min, a top finance (金融) student who graduated from Peking University, made an unusual career choice that surpassed expectations. Instead of seeking a finance career, she exchanged her business suit for the clothing of a farmer and went back to her hometown.
Her decision was met with doubt, especially from her family who questioned why she would leave the promise of a high-paid career for the uncertainties of farming. In fact, Li Min desired to make agricultural practices modern as she saw the backwardness of traditional farming during the visits to her hometown.
Upon returning to her village, Li Min also encountered disbelief from classmates and villagers alike. However, her promise to combine modern technology and new practices with agriculture soon proved transformative, allowing farmers to monitor crop growth through field sensors and smartphones, and make data-based decisions to improve productions and quality.
She started with on-site sales of fruits and vegetables. Recognizing the instability (不稳定性) in the supply chain and the need for a more dependable system, Li Min developed the “Lai Cun Wang” rural (乡村的) e-business platform in 2015 to increase sales.
By 2023, Li Min’s efforts had reached more areas, establishing over 200 rural service stations and creating jobs for thousands of families. Her contribution to rural development and poverty fighting earned her several awards, including the Henan Innovation Award.
Li Min’s story is a powerful reminder that professional success is defined by the strong love for work and devotion one brings to it. Her journey from a finance scholar to an agricultural leader shows how her efforts can bring change, inspire communities and contribute to sustainable development in agriculture. It encourages more students to seek their dreams with strong belief.
24. What made Li Min choose to return to her hometown after graduation?
A. Her determination to make a difference to it. B. Her unsuccessful job-hunting experiences.
C. A sudden change in her financial conditions. D. Pressure from her family to continue farming.
25. How did Li Min solve the problem in the supply chain?
A. Through government funds. B. Through mass production.
C. Through experienced farmers. D. Through Internet technology.
26. Which of the following can best describe Li Min?
A. Generous but hesitant. B. Big-headed and energetic.
C. Far-sighted and creative. D. Traditional but independent.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. Passion counts in our professions. B. Success comes from full preparations.
C. Taking others’ advice is key for job choices. D. Career achievements depend on family support.
C
The new stretchy (有弹性的) electronic skin, developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin, solves a major bottleneck in the emerging technology. Existing e-skin technology loses sensing accuracy (传感精度) as the material stretches (拉伸), but that is not the case with this new version.
E-skin technology senses pressure from contact, letting the attached machine know how much force to use to, for example, grab a cup or touch a person. But, when traditional e-skin is stretched, it also senses that deformation. That reading creates additional noise that skews (使有误差) the sensors’ ability to sense the pressure. That could lead to a robot using too much force to grab something.
“As human skin has to stretch and bend to accommodate our movements, so too does e-skin,” said Nanshu Lu, a professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering who led the project. “No matter how much our e-skin stretches, the pressure response doesn’t change, and that is a significant achievement.” Lu envisages the stretchy e-skin as a key component to a robot hand capable of the same level of softness and sensitivity (灵敏度) in touch as a human hand. This could be applied to medical care, where robots could check a patient’s pulse, wipe a body or massage a body part.
Why is a robot nurse or physical therapist necessary? Around the world, millions of people are aging and are in need of care, more than the global medical system can provide. “In the future, if we have more elderly people than available caregivers, it’s going to be a crisis worldwide,” Lu said. “We need to find new ways to take care of people efficiently and also gently, and robots are an important piece of that puzzle.” Beyond medicine, human-caring robots could be deployed in disasters. They could search for injured and trapped people in an earthquake or a collapsed building, for example, and apply on-the-spot care, such as administering CPR
28. What’s the problem of the traditional e-skin?
A. Poor control of force. B. Low levels of softness.
C. Misjudgments of distance. D. Loud noise of the machine.
29. What does the underlined word “envisages” in the third paragraph mean?
A. Imagines. B. Monitors. C. Improves. D. Tests.
30. What makes Lu think robot caregivers necessary?
A. The high turnover of medical staff. B. The ageing of the population.
C. Their high quality of care. D. Their low operating costs.
31. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Human skin has higher touch sensitivity than e-skin.
B. Robots need e-skin with higher touch sensitivity.
C. Stretchy e-skin gives robots human-level touch sensitivity.
D. Stretchy e-skin improves the efficiency of medical systems.
D
Artificial intelligence is contributing to significant advances in many academic and technical fields. Although the application of AI tools can benefit science and society, it also creates risks.
AI slop — low-quality, inaccurate content from Generative AI like ChatGPT — floods scientific literature with false data and misleading reasoning. AI review tools favour such slop. After ChatGPT’s 2022 release, scientists lacking oversight submit error-ridden papers. AI slop also appears in paper mills (工厂) — companies mass-producing papers; in 2022 alone, 416 mill-produced articles were withdrawn. Though fake (伪造的) research existed before Generative AI, this new technology has facilitated its expansion, driving a transition from individual bad actors to illegal businesses.
Unfortunately, professional journals continue to publish AI slop. This problem arises partially from novel challenges specific to Generative AI, such as the difficulties involved in detecting AI slop; the complexities in enforcing policies that require disclosure (公开) of AI assistance; and the increase in submissions arising from AI assistance. The AI slop trend also results from long-standing failures in the review system. Even before Generative AI, overstretched volunteer reviewers and editors lacked the time and resources to ensure high standards, allowing many low-quality papers to pass. AI-generated and AI-assisted papers are pushing an already overstressed system to the breaking point.
Even the very citations that provide continuity and prior evidence in scientific papers are being undermined by Generative AI. Librarians have reported increasing requests for access to AI-generated citations that do not exist. Many such citations have already entered the academic literature, contributing to the reduction of trust in science. When researchers cite such slop, they pollute the academic world with unreliable or biased analyses, damaging confidence in the entire scientific ecosystem.
What can we do to contain the AI slop in scientific research? Researchers who use AI to conduct literature searches should carefully check references for reliability. AI developers and companies bear some responsibility for ensuring that these tools are trained on high-quality research papers and data. For example, scientific institutions can pressure developers to fine-tune their AI models using the most reliable sources and to openly share the results of their safety and accuracy tests with users. This is just the beginning of a long journey.
32. How does the new technology lead to the expansion of fake research?
A. It transforms illegal businesses. B. It saves struggling paper mills.
C. It eliminates misleading reasoning. D. It boosts the production of false papers.
33. What can we learn about the academic review system?
A. It is overburdened. B. It is underestimated.
C. It is rich in resources. D. It is efficient in checks.
34. What does the underlined word “undermined” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Inspected. B. Ignored. C. Weakened. D. Mixed.
35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. AI slop should be tackled collectively. B. AI companies should be fined severely.
C. AI tools can be trained on various data. D. AI developers are the root cause of AI slop.

Eugenie knew that being frank would ease her envy and, but she was surprised that when she shifted her attitude, she could share her friend’s happiness and experience her own, in turn.
Finding pleasure in another person’s good fortune is what social scientists call freudenfreude, the great joy we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it doesn’t directly involve us. ____38____ “Freudenfreude is like a kind of social glue,” says Catherine Chambliss, a professor of psychology at Ursinus College. “It makes relationships closer and more enjoyable.” This feeling is similar to positive empathy—the ability to share someone else’s joy. It could also improve life satisfaction, and even help people cooperate during conflicts.
____39____ However, we seldom pay enough attention to their happy moments. In fact, how we react to our friends’ joy is even more important than how we respond to their suffering. Too often, we think of joy passively. We see it as something that comes to us, instead of something we can produce. While it can be difficult in practice, freudenfreude can lift us up and brighten our day. ____40____

B. She had failed the same test weeks earlier.
C. So celebrating our friends’ success is a win-win to us all.

Mia and Chloe had been best friends since middle school. When their history teacher gave a group project about old civilizations, they worked together right away. Mia liked to plan everything and do her work early. Chloe always waited until the last minute. “Relax, we have two weeks,” Chloe would say, looking at her phone while Mia worked alone. Mia did not want to be bossy, so she kept quiet and did most of the work herself. She hoped everything would be fine in the end.
The night before the presentation (展示), Mia finished the slides, the speech, and the poster by herself. Chloe said she would practice her part in the morning. But the next day, something went wrong. When Chloe stood up to speak, she could not say the words well and got some facts wrong. She had never even read the slides. Their teacher, Mr. Evans, looked disappointed and said, “This does not match your research. See me after class.” Mia felt very sorry for herself. She had worked so hard, but now her grade might be low because of Chloe.
After class, Chloe caught up with Mia in the hallway. “I am really sorry. I let you down,” she said, her voice shaking. Mia took a deep breath and said, “I should have told you how I felt. I should not have done everything alone.” They went to talk to Mr. Evans together and told him the truth.
To their surprise, the teacher was not angry. “Telling the truth is more important than a perfect grade,” he said. “But you need to talk with each other. I will give you one more chance. Do the project again by next Friday.” Mia and Chloe were glad and knew that would be their best opportunity to start over — and this time, they would do it together.

C 22. B 23. D

A 29. A 30. B 31. C
根据第二段“But, when traditional e-skin is stretched, it also senses that deformation. That reading creates additional noise that skews (使有误差) the sensors’ ability to sense the pressure. That could lead to a robot using too much force to grab something. (但传统电子皮肤在被拉伸时,也会感应到这种形变。这种读数会产生额外的噪声,从而干扰传感器感知压力的能力。这可能导致机器人在抓取物体时用力过大。)”可知,传统电子皮肤的核心问题是力的控制不够精准。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“the stretchy e-skin as a key component to a robot hand capable of the same level of softness and sensitivity (灵敏度) in touch as a human hand. This could be applied to medical care, where robots could check a patient’s pulse, wipe a body or massage a body part. (这种可拉伸电子皮肤可作为机器人手掌的关键组件,使其具备与人手相同水平的柔软度和触觉灵敏度。这项技术可应用于医疗护理领域,机器人能够检查患者的脉搏、擦拭身体或按摩身体部位。)”可知,划线词后都是Lu的一些设想和展望,envisage的意思是“展望”,和Imagines意思相近。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Around the world, millions of people are aging and are in need of care, more than the global medical system can provide. “In the future, if we have more elderly people than available caregivers, it’s going to be a crisis worldwide,” Lu said. (在全球范围内,数百万人正在步入老年,需要护理,而现有的全球医疗系统无法满足这一需求。卢说:“将来,如果老年人的数量超过可用的护理人员,这将成为一场全球性危机。”)”可知,卢认为机器人护理员是必要的是因为人口的老龄化。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“The new stretchy (有弹性的) electronic skin, developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin, solves a major bottleneck in the emerging technology. Existing e-skin technology loses sensing accuracy (传感精度) as the material stretches (拉伸), but that is not the case with this new version. 。
D 33. A 34. C 35. A

根据第二段“Though fake (伪造的) research existed before Generative AI, this new technology has facilitated its expansion, driving a transition from individual bad actors to illegal businesses.(尽管在生成式人工智能出现之前就已经存在伪造的研究,但这项新技术却推动了其规模的扩大,使这种行为从个别不良分子发展成为非法企业)”可知,这种新技术会促使伪造文件的产量增加。
根据第三段“Even before Generative AI, overstretched volunteer reviewers and editors lacked the time and resources to ensure high standards, allowing many low-quality papers to pass. AI-generated and AI-assisted papers are pushing an already overstressed system to the breaking point.(即便在生成式人工智能出现之前,过度劳累的志愿评审员和编辑也缺乏时间和资源来确保高标准,从而导致许多低质量的论文得以通过。而由人工智能生成和辅助撰写的论文正将本已不堪重负的系统推向崩溃的边缘)”可知,学术评审制度负担过重。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“Librarians have reported increasing requests for access to AI-generated citations that do not exist. Many such citations have already entered the academic literature, contributing to the reduction of trust in science. When researchers cite such slop, they pollute the academic world with unreliable or biased analyses, damaging confidence in the entire scientific ecosystem.(图书馆工作人员反映,对于那些并不存在的由人工智能生成的参考文献的访问请求越来越多。许多此类文献已经进入了学术领域,从而导致人们对科学的信任度降低。当研究人员引用这类粗制滥造的内容时,他们会给学术界带来不可靠或有偏见的分析,从而损害整个科学生态系统的信任度)”可知,虚假引用降低学术信任、破坏科研生态,可知AI损害、削弱了引文的价值与可信度,故划线词意思是“削弱”。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Researchers who use AI to conduct literature searches should carefully check references for reliability. AI developers and companies bear some responsibility for ensuring that these tools are trained on high-quality research papers and data. For example, scientific institutions can pressure developers to fine-tune their AI models using the most reliable sources and to openly share the results of their safety and accuracy tests with users. This is just the beginning of a long journey.(使用人工智能进行文献检索的研究人员应当仔细核查参考文献的可靠性。
When Eugenie George first heard that her friend passed a financial exam, her heart sank. ____36____
“Envy was eating me up,” recalls Eugenie. She was clearly filled with jealousy at that moment. ____37____ “And I told her I failed and admitted I was green-eyed,” she says.
A study in 2021 examined freudenfreude’s role in daily life and found that it could encourage kind actions, like helping people.
A. But anyway she congratulated her friend.
B. She had failed the same test weeks earlier.
C. So celebrating our friends’ success is a win-win to us all.
D. Sharing our failures with friends often brings us closer together.
E. This positive emotion plays a key role in human communication.
F. Envy is a common emotion, but it can be transformed into admiration.
G. Too often, we think our friends need us most during their hard times: a job loss, getting divorced.
B 37. A 38. E 39. G 40. C
由上文“When Eugenie George first heard that her friend passed a financial exam, her heart sank. (当Eugenie George第一次听说她的朋友通过了金融考试时,她的心一沉。)”以及下文“‘Envy was eating me up,’ recalls Eugenie. (Eugenie回忆道:‘嫉妒吞噬着我。’)”可知,本空要说明她心沉的原因,B选项“She had failed the same test weeks earlier. (几周前她参加了同样的考试但失败了。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“failed the same test”解释了她“heart sank”的原因,且该选项中的“failed”与下文的“Envy”相呼应,表示考试失败导致嫉妒情绪的产生。
【37题详解】
由上文“She was clearly filled with jealousy at that moment. (那一刻她显然充满了嫉妒。)”以及下文“‘And I told her I failed and admitted I was green-eyed,’ she says. (她说:‘我告诉她我失败了,并承认自己嫉妒了。’)”可知,本空要说她在嫉妒情绪下的行为,A选项“But anyway she congratulated her friend. (但不管怎样,她还是祝贺了她的朋友。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“But anyway”表示转折,说明尽管嫉妒她仍做出了积极行为,且该选项中的“congratulated her friend”与下文的“told her I failed”相呼应,表示她先祝贺再坦白的先后顺序。
【38题详解】
由上文“Finding pleasure in another person’s good fortune is what social scientists call freudenfreude, the great joy we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it doesn’t directly involve us. (为他人的好运感到快乐是社会学家称之为‘freudenfreude’的东西,即当别人成功时我们感受到的巨大喜悦,即使这与我们无直接关系。)”以及下文“‘Freudenfreude is like a kind of social glue,’ says Catherine Chambliss, a professor of psychology at Ursinus College. ‘It makes relationships closer and more enjoyable.’ (‘Freudenfreude就像一种社会粘合剂,’Ursinus学院心理学教授Catherine Chambliss说,‘它让关系更亲密、更愉快。’)”可知,本空要承接上文对这种积极情绪的定义并引出下文其作用,E选项“This positive emotion plays a key role in human communication. (这种积极情绪在人类交流中起着关键作用。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“This positive emotion”指代上文的“freudenfreude”,且该选项中的“plays a key role”与下文的“social glue”和“makes relationships closer and more enjoyable”相呼应,表示这种情绪在人际交往中的重要作用。
由下文“However, we seldom pay enough attention to their happy moments. (然而,我们很少足够关注他们的快乐时刻。)”可知,本空与下文构成转折关系,G选项“Too often, we think our friends need us most during their hard times: a job loss, getting divorced. (我们常常认为朋友在困难时期最需要我们:失业、离婚。)”能引出下文,符合题意,该选项中的“hard times”与下文的“happy moments”形成对比,且该选项中的“we think our friends need us most”与下文的“we seldom pay enough attention”相呼应,通过转折强调我们对朋友快乐时刻关注不足。
由上文“While it can be difficult in practice, freudenfreude can lift us up and brighten our day. (虽然在实践中可能很难,但freudenfreude可以鼓舞我们,照亮我们的一天。)”可知,本空要对全文进行总结,C选项“So celebrating our friends’ success is a win-win to us all.

故填where。
此处为省略结构,root与逻辑主语为被动关系,完整形式为when it is rooted in heritage,省略主语与be动词,用过去分词rooted。

Hello everyone,
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thanks for your listening!
One possible version:
Hello everyone,
I firmly believe that learning English is still necessary, even with AI tools around.
First, huge amounts of information — news, tech, business information — are in English, which won’t change in the near future. Second, AI tools miss jokes, cultural meanings or subtle feelings. Have you tried translating a poem with an AI tool? It fails. Third, real communication is about emotions. No machine can truly replace laughing with a friend or comforting someone in their own language.
So let’s use AI as a tool, not a replacement. Keep learning English. It’s worth it.
Thanks for your listening!

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
That weekend, they met at Mia’s house with a new attitude.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From that experience, Mia and Chloe learned a good lesson.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That weekend, they met at Mia’s house with a new attitude. Instead of one doing all the work, they divided the tasks fairly. Mia sorted out the key information of old civilizations, while Chloe searched for pictures and organized the poster carefully. Chloe no longer buried herself in the phone but focused on their project. They discussed every part patiently, corrected mistakes together and practiced the speech repeatedly side by side. Both of them devoted themselves wholeheartedly.
From that experience, Mia and Chloe learned a good lesson. They realized teamwork requires communication and shared responsibility. It is wrong that we keep silent and do all the work alone and that we always put things off till the last minute. True friendship means being honest with each other and cooperating sincerely. Since then, they have always worked together properly in group tasks, and their friendship became even stronger.
