Founded in 1992, the Literary Heritage Association devotes itself to popularizing classic literary works, helping students and literature lovers understand classic writers, their life stories, times and lasting influence on modern literature. To enrich teenagers’ after-school cultural life, the association holds a national student writing competition every year, which is inspired by classic literary masterpieces.
This year’s writing competition encourages students to create original works based on classic literary themes. The competition is open to all primary and secondary school students, college learners, home-schooled teenagers and youth community members. To ensure fair competition, participants are divided into three age groups: Junior (under 11 years old), Intermediate (12-15 years old) and Senior (16-19 years old). All competitors are required to fill in their exact date of birth on the entry form.
Participants can choose one of three creative themes: writing a poem themed on journey and growth; creating a short story that reflects social phenomena through animal characters; or imagining a modern pilgrim based on ordinary modern occupations such as medical workers, bank staff and public servants.
The competition rules are clear: the maximum word count is 500 words. All entries must be original student works. Adaptations of classic stories are also acceptable if they have innovative expression and unique content. The final judgment of the professional judges cannot be challenged. All works need to be submitted before January 31. Participants can upload their entries through the official website of the association. For more details, participants can contact the organizing committee via email.

Modern technology has greatly changed traditional industries, and agriculture has also undergone a profound agricultural revolution. Modern farms are no longer dependent on manual labor; advanced machines have become the main power source for agricultural production, greatly improving farming efficiency.
The most significant technological support for modern agriculture comes from farm computers. Forward-thinking farmers widely use professional farm management computers to conduct precise farm operation. Computers can record detailed farming data, helping farmers make scientific decisions on crop selection, livestock breeding scale, product sales time and expected economic profits. Professional software tailored for grain planting, animal husbandry and dairy farming has been continuously developed and updated. Agricultural colleges now require students to take computer courses besides professional agricultural knowledge, indicating that computer technology has become an essential skill for modern farmers. Undoubtedly, modern farming relies on machine power, while future agriculture will fully depend on intelligent computer power.
Another promising agricultural technology is intelligent farming robots, which are currently in the experimental promotion stage. These mechanized intelligent devices can simulate human actions and even make simple judgments. In the future, intelligent robots will replace humans to complete most daily farming work, including shearing sheep, driving tractors and picking fruits. They can also finish complex and repetitive work such as automatic milking and milk quality detection. Although full intelligent unmanned farms are still in the future, various specialized farming robots will be widely used in agricultural production in the near future.

Busy work and endless tasks have become the normal state of modern people’s life. Years of overwork made a university leader exhausted and even overslept unexpectedly one day. This small accident sounded a loud alarm: long-term continuous high-intensity work will exhaust people’s energy and even threaten physical health.
After a short vacation of reading, listening to music and relaxing with family, he finally recovered his physical and mental state and returned to work efficiently. This case reflects a common problem in modern society: people have lost the balance between work and rest.
Nowadays, people take being busy as a symbol of success. Many people believe that endless hard work represents personal ability and stress resistance. The busier they are, the more important they feel themselves to be. Being occupied with work all day, having no time for family communication and personal relaxation, has gradually become the standard of a successful life in many people’s eyes.
However, constant busyness without rest makes people lose their inner rhythm. People ignore physical fatigue, lose thinking wisdom and miss the warmth of life in endless work. The root cause of this phenomenon is that modern people have abandoned the concept of regular rest. Proper rest is not laziness, but a necessary spiritual and physical adjustment.
Rest is an indispensable need for human body and mind. Driven by ambition and sense of responsibility, many people feel guilty when stopping work. In fact, regular rest is a life principle we must follow. It allows us to adjust our state, recharge ourselves and gain stronger motivation to move forward.
27. What does the underlined word “alarm” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. A sign of aging.
B. A warning of potential danger.
C. A signal of heavy stress.
D. A symptom of illness.
28. What do modern people regard as a successful life?
A. Working efficiently without pressure.
B. Being more talented than peers.
C. Being busy all the time with no time to rest.
D. Attaching great importance to family company.
29. Why do some people feel guilty about resting?
A. They lack responsibility for work.
B. They are eager for instant success.
C. They fail to know rest is essential for life.
D. They are forced to work by social rules.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Modern people are living an extremely busy life.
B. People should keep a balance between work and rest.
C. Being busy has become a social trend.
D. Proper rest helps people gain wisdom.

A latest animal behavior study conducted by German researchers has found that dogs possess preliminary metacognitive abilities. Similar to primates, dogs can actively take the initiative to collect extra information when they lack enough clues to solve problems, which proves their independent thinking ability.
In the controlled experiment, researchers set up two barrier fences and placed food or toy rewards randomly behind one of the fences. Some dogs could witness the placement process, while others had no access to visual information. The research team recorded and analyzed how many times dogs would check through fence gaps to confirm the reward’s position before making choices.
Experimental data showed obvious differences: dogs that could not see the reward’s position would take the initiative to check repeatedly to obtain effective information, while dogs with clear vision clues would make choices directly. This fully proves that dogs will actively seek missing information when faced with uncertain situations.
Nevertheless, researchers stated that the study cannot completely confirm that dogs have complete metacognition. In the experiment, dogs relied not only on vision but also on their sensitive sense of smell to collect information, which may affect the accuracy of experimental results. Smell is the core sensory ability of dogs and plays a key role in their information judgment.
Research members plan to carry out follow-up experiments. They will further explore how dogs choose different sensory ways to collect information in different environments, so as to deeply analyze their cognitive and problem-solving abilities.
31. What special ability do dogs show in the study?
A. Solving problems by seeking extra information actively.
B. Communicating with primates in special ways.
C. Using smell to replace vision in all situations.
D. Making accurate judgments without clues.
32. What does the underlined word “concealed” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Protected. B. Hidden. C. Stored. D. Found.
33. What is researchers’ attitude towards the current findings?
A. Fully confident. B. Totally doubtful. C. Not definitive. D. Strongly critical.
34. Where can we most probably read this passage?
A. Sports news. B. Animal science. C. Fashion magazine. D. Travel journal.
35. What will the researchers do in future studies?
A. Train dogs to improve their vision ability.
B. Figure out dogs’ choice of sensory information.
C. Prove dogs have complete metacognitive ability.
D. Compare dogs’ sense of smell with primates’.

On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread, 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. Where are they? Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets again, including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
“Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women’s and the other not black.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer,
Paragraph 2:
During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair.

参考范文
Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing a pair of black leather gloves exactly the same as his. Overjoyed but a little nervous, George walked up to the man politely and explained his situation. He told the man that he had lost his beloved gloves while shopping and described every detail of the gloves. The man was surprised and took off the gloves to check carefully. Finally, he confirmed that the gloves were George’s and returned them without hesitation. George expressed his sincere thanks again and again.
During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. He used to feel disappointed about people’s indifference, but this experience completely changed his opinion. He realized that kind and honest people were still around us. He cherished his recovered gloves more than ever and decided to pass on the kindness. From then on, whenever he found lost items in public, he would try his best to find their owners, hoping to warm others with small good deeds.

The competition rules are clear: the maximum word count is 500 words. All entries must be original student works. Adaptations of classic stories are also acceptable if they have innovative expression and unique content. The final judgment of the professional judges cannot be challenged.

D
【答案与解析】
31. A 细节理解题。根据首段“dogs may possess some metacognitive abilities... they will actively look for more information”可知,狗狗的特殊能力是主动搜集信息解决问题。故选A。

固定搭配:ask sb. to do sth. 要求某人做某事。句意:他们让数百名参与者给亲友写真诚的感谢邮件。

修饰形容词 moved(感动的),要用副词。true 的副词形式 truly,意为“真正地”。

Dear Jack,
Thanks for your e-mail. I’m glad to tell you something about China’s Spring Festival.
As the most important traditional festival in China, the Spring Festival symbolizes reunion and happiness. Weeks before it, people are busy cleaning houses and buying new year goods to welcome the new year.
On New Year’s Eve, families gather to have a big dinner and watch the Spring Festival Gala. During the festival, people visit relatives, exchange best wishes and set off fireworks. Children are especially happy to receive red envelopes.
I love the Spring Festival because it lets us stay with family and feel the warmth of traditional culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给内容和段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
