Phone-surfing Results in More Purchases
Leaving your mobile phone at home when you go shopping could prevent mindless overspending, a new study suggests. Research from the University of Bath discovered that when people ____1____ (distract) by their mobiles during a trip to the supermarket their shopping bills might rise ____2____ an average of 41 per cent. Attention-weakening devices also encourage shoppers to wander along more shelves, ____3____ they come across more products.
In one study, 294 people aged between 18 and 73 at four Swedish supermarkets wore eye-tracking glasses throughout a shopping trip to measure where they went and ____4____ they looked at. Their receipts were then used to assess their spending. Those using a mobile phone ____5____ (spend) on average £33.73 compared to an average of £23.91 for those who did not.
A second study of 117 shoppers found those with mobile phones spent longer in the store, giving more attention to shelves. They also spent an average of £36. This study found ____6____ shoppers using a mobile phone spent on average £36.16 on 20.85 items, compared to £25.59 on 13.22 products.
Dr Carl-Philip Ahlbom, of the University of Bath’s School of Management said: “Business owners have tended to worry that mobiles distract shoppers from spending money, ____7____ we were amazed to find completely the reverse effect.” The findings were very clear-the more time you spend on your phone, the more money you ____8____ (part) with.
“So if you’re trying to budget, ____9____ (leave) your phone in your pocket. It’s not the phone itself ____10____ causes more purchases, but its impact on our focus.” Researchers believe people spend more because using a phone distracts people from their planned lists.

Have you ever looked at someone else’s life with envy, just enough envy that you wish for a moment or two (or longer) that you could be them? Are there moments when, if the opportunity to be them were on _____11_____, you might be tempted by it?
Would we really want this? And what might we learn about ourselves or how we see our lives if we ____12____ considered it? To be sure, there are ____13____ here. If you had someone else’s life, who would raise your children or love your spouse or take care of your parents in their old age?
In fact, if you were someone else your own children would not have come into existence in the first place. That’s not a happy thought. To ____14____ this, perhaps the best way to cast this is in terms of a trade: If you had their life then they would have yours, and live it exactly as you would have. Your responsibilities would be ____15____, so there would be nothing to feel guilty about.
If we think of it this way, then the question of wanting to be someone else is a question of what we might call experience: Is there anybody else whose experience of life you would prefer, ____16____ everything else would be equal? One ____17____ concern about wanting someone else’s experience is that my desire to be someone else is grounded in values and desires that 1 have, and so I have to be me in order to want to be him. However, it’s not clear that that presents any real obstacle to such a desire. The fact is that there would be at least enough overlap (重叠)with them that they are exemplifying my values and desires but have a better experience than I do. So I can still prefer to be them.
I think that, on reflection, most of us would not want to ____18____ with another person, no matter how successful or tempting their lives seem. To see why, though, we’ll need to ____19____ our angle of vision. We will have to look at our own experiences rather than at theirs, or perhaps look at our experiences first. What would I be willing to give up to be another? My relationships with everyone — children, spouse, friends —and my whole history. I wouldn’t have _____20_____ it. My loss would be that of the whole of my own experience.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
I believe in getting lost. Lost in the text of the novel that is particular to your thoughts and feelings that you consider special. The song that reminds you of your childhood summers, where you close your eyes and lose yourself reliving a memory; feeling the warm wind brushing against your arm, the smell of the dusty sand that you stir up as you ride your bicycle, murmuring the tune of that song. Like the unprepared Sunday Drive, with no destination. You’re free to wander, take paths that you’ve never noticed, and discover places you haven’t been to. Then falling off on the path to lead you back home, leaving you to test directions and alertly absorb your surroundings in order to find your way back; that kind of lost.
I get lost daily; whether it’s in thought, or the unplanned drive I just decided to go on. Getting lost is an adventurous learning experience that trains you how to be more aware of your surroundings. A few of my most favorite memories involve physically getting lost. That one late night trip back to Ludington from Grand Rapids I took with a few friends. We finally realized we were going the wrong way when we hit South Haven, almost three hours out of our way. There was also the time where I got lost in the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids after the President’s Ball and then the parking garage for a solid two hours. I felt like my life was that one scene of an American television situation comedy, minus the air conditioner. At the time, these are nervous experiences that get your anxiety pumping. You’re fearful that you won’t be safe, but it always works itself out in the end. Physically losing yourself prepares you for how you manage when you emotionally or mentally lose yourself.
You don’t always have to be lost in a literal sense to “get lost” and some of the time, losing yourself may not be a positive experience. There are times where I lose sight of who I am. While lost, I test out metaphorical paths and sometimes they turn out to be the right direction and other times they are a wrong turn. I made note of these wrong turns, so I can avoid them further on up the road of finding my way back to who I am.
In Walden, Henry David Thoreau wrote “Not till we are lost, in other words not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations.” Getting lost fuels my curiosity and teaches me lessons on finding my way back to the right track. I believe in getting lost through day dreams, a misplacement, adventures, and difficult times where you make discoveries about yourself and the atmosphere around you. In order to truly find yourself, I believe that you should put down the map and get wonderfully lost.

39. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

The song that reminds you of your childhood summers, where you close your eyes and lose yourself reliving a memory; feeling the warm wind brushing against your arm, the smell of the dusty sand that you stir up as you ride your bicycle, murmuring the tune of that song. Then falling off on the path to lead you back home, leaving you to test directions and alertly absorb your surroundings in order to find your way back; that kind of lost.(我信奉“迷失”。

A new kind of production was underway on the set of the NBC comedy Superstore. Social media stars were crafting 30-second videos to post on their social media channels ahead of the comedy’s second-season return. Each made sure to mention Superstore and its first public show.
As networks and studios struggle to reach young audiences in an increasingly fragmented(碎片化的)media marketplace, many have turned to so-called influencers—online stars whose is measured by the size of their Internet followings—as a means of generating awareness. Advertisers are seizing on the strategy in an age of commercial-skipping and ad-blockers. Word of mouth in the digital age means messages travel faster by way of social media. The majority of consumers worldwide trust online recommendations from stars. And when Superstore gave its first public show, it did so to higher ratings than the last show of Season 1.
Studio and network executives say they work with influencers to build brand awareness and reputation in a more friendly way through the friend-like connections consumers feel toward the online personalities they follow. At the upper level, influencers typically have thousands of followers on social media and online content platforms and count many millions of people who tune in daily to watch them. Some do something that makes themselves look stupid in their daily routine, sharing videos of their trips to the grocery store or dinner dates. Others have built careers on performances—making comedy videos, reviewing video games, performing magic tricks and teaching cooking lessons, among other pursuits.
When in the employ of studios, their efforts can be as simple as publicizing a film or more involved attempts like the marketing push for Superstore. Entertainment companies declined to discuss how much they pay influencers. But several experts said their pay ranges from a few thousand dollars to several million. Some simply receive gift baskets instead of pay.
Over the last year or so, some entertainment companies have begun to cast influencers in their TV and film projects. The strategy is a bit of gamble: It’s a new business model, and questions remain about the effectiveness of using these personalities to improve a show’s ratings—or help open a movie. Just how much influence the influencers have is hard to measure. TV ratings and box-office returns do not reveal what caused a viewer to tune in.
What is clear is that these personalities aren’t necessarily getting the work because of their acting skills, but often because of their Internet followings. Yet as social media stars consider whether to take on jobs promoting movies and TV shows, there’s an important consideration for both parties: the credibility of a campaign. “Fans are definitely award when they’re being tempted with promotional posts,” said Zach King, a social media star who performs magic tricks. “It has to be something that is natural and fits with the image of the creator.”
43. Why did social media stars post short videos on their channels before Superstore’s second season?
A. To attract more influencers B. To draw audience’s attention
C. To put on better performances D. To increase the channels’ popularity
44. Advertisers like the influencer marketing strategy because ________.
A. audiences believe in whatever online stars recommend
B. influencers are quite award of the impact of the digital age
C. ordinary advertisements are often ignored by young people
D. social media platforms are the cheapest place to spread messages
45. What is implied in the passage?
A. The influencer marketing strategy help build connections between executives
B. Most influencers get paid from gift baskets instead of from their companies
C. Most influencers take on marketing jobs regardless of their reliability
D. The influencer marketing strategy may not really work well
46. The passage mainly wants to tell us that __________.
A. most young people like following influencers
B. studios are relying more on social media stars
C. influencers are gradually replacing movie stars
D. social media are filming videos for Superstore
B 44. C 45. D 46. B

Advertisers are seizing on the strategy in an age of commercial-skipping and ad-blockers. Word of mouth in the digital age means messages travel faster by way of social media. The majority of consumers worldwide trust online recommendations from stars.

The Minoans: A Forgotten People
The first advanced culture in ancient Greece was the Minoan culture. For thousands of years, knowledge of these people survived only in Greek myths. In the late 19th century, archaeologists began to unearth ruins. This inspired Arthur Evans to begin digging on the island of Crete near mainland Greece. On a dig in Knossos, Evans found an ancient palace. Experts think that it was the palace of King Minos, a central figure in many Greek myths.
____47____ With his team, he uncovered a vast structure, varied works of art, and many hieroglyphic records. These finds, together with later finds, comprise all that experts know about Minoan culture.
From the evidence experts gathered, it is clear that the Minoans were ahead of their time. The palace at Knossos was five floors high with hundreds of rooms. Buildings throughout the ancient city had plumbing and flush toilets. Stone pavement lined the surfaces of the roads. In addition, the Minoans possessed a highly developed naval fleet for long-distance trade. ____48____ These records confirm the central role of commerce in culture.
Their analysis of the evidence also offers insight into some aspects of Minoan society. ____49____ Ruins and artwork suggest that people of all classes enjoyed a high degree of social and gender equality. Religious icons (图符) show that Minoans worshiped bulls, the natural world, and many female gods.
An unusual feature of Minoans culture was the pursuit of leisure interests. Sport and visual arts were central to Minoan life. Boxing and bull jumping, a sport in which players jumped over live bulls, were popular. Although bull jumping may have served some ritual purpose, experts believe that it was done mostly for fun. Similarly, although some works of art showed political and religious themes, other works served only as pleasant decor (装饰品). ____50____
The Minoans met their demise after a series of natural disasters. Experts believe that group from the Greek mainland capitalized on these events and looked over the island.
A. Some experts think that the wealth gained from trade allowed for such leisure in sports and the arts.
B. Experts believe that a king and mostly a female priest ruled the government and controlled trade.
C. In ancient Greek myths, Minoan society was quite prosperous and highly civilized.
D. The palace that Evans unearthed a century ago was the first proof of Minoan culture.
E. Minoan culture didn’t exist before Arthur Evans discovered the palace under the earth.
F. Although not yet decoded, written script on clay tablets appears to list trade accounts.
D 48. F 49. B 50. A
前文“This inspired Arthur Evans to begin digging on the island of Crete near mainland Greece. On a dig in Kbossos, Evans found an ancient palace. Experts think that it was the palace of King Minos, a central figure in many Greek myths.(这激发了亚瑟·埃文斯开始在希腊大陆附近的克里特岛上挖掘。在克博索斯的一次挖掘中,埃文斯发现了一座古老的宫殿。专家认为这是米诺斯国王的宫殿,他是许多希腊神话中的中心人物。)”讲述了亚瑟·埃文斯受考古发现启发在克里特岛挖掘,找到了一座被认为是米诺斯国王的宫殿。后文“With his team, he uncovered a vast structure, varied works of art, and many hieroglyphic records. These finds, together with later finds, comprise all that experts know about Minoan culture.(与他的团队一起,他发现了一个巨大的结构,各种各样的艺术作品,以及许多象形文字的记录。这些发现,加上后来的发现,构成了专家们对米诺斯文化的全部了解。)”提到他和团队发掘出了巨大的建筑结构、多样的艺术品和许多象形文字记录。选项D“The palace that Evans unearthed a century ago was the first proof of Minoan culture. (埃文斯一个世纪前发掘的宫殿是米诺斯文化的第一个证据)”,既承接了前文埃文斯发掘宫殿的内容,又引出了后文基于此次发掘所获取的关于米诺斯文化的更多发现。故选D项。
【48题详解】
前文“In addition, the Minoans possessed a highly developed naval fleet for long-distance trade.(此外,米诺斯人还拥有一支高度发达的海军舰队,可以进行长途贸易。)”提到米诺斯人拥有高度发达的海军舰队用于长途贸易,后文“These records confirm the central role of commerce in culture.(这些记录证实了商业在文化中的核心作用。)” F“Although not yet decoded, written script on clay tablets appears to list trade accounts. (虽然尚未破译,但泥板上的文字似乎列出了贸易账目)”,其中的“贸易账目”与前文的“贸易”相呼应,同时“记录”也与后文的“这些记录”相衔接,解释了能证实商业核心地位的记录是什么。故选F项。
【49题详解】
前文“Their analysis of the evidence also offers insight into some aspects of Minoan society.(他们对证据的分析也为了解米诺斯社会的某些方面提供了见解。)” 所以B项“Experts believe that a king and mostly a female priest ruled the government and controlled trade. (专家认为一位国王和主要是女性祭司统治着政府并控制着贸易) 填入空格处,与上文是顺接关系。且后文“Ruins and artwork suggest that people of all classes enjoyed a high degree of social and gender equality. Religious icons show that Minoans worshiped bulls, the natural world, and many female gods.(废墟和艺术品表明,所有阶层的人都享有高度的社会和性别平等。宗教图符表明,米诺斯人崇拜公牛、自然世界和许多女神。)”提到遗迹和艺术品表明各个阶层的人都享有高度的社会和性别平等,宗教图符显示米诺斯人崇拜公牛、自然世界和许多女性神灵,其中的“性别平等”以及“崇拜许多女性神灵”与B项中的“女性祭司”相呼应。故选B项。
【50题详解】
前文“An unusual feature of Minoans culture was the pursuit of leisure interests. Sport and visual arts were central to Minoan life. Boxing and bull jumping, a sport in which players jumped over live bulls, were popular. Although bull jumping may have served some ritual purpose, experts believe that it was done mostly for fun. Similarly, although some works of art showed political and religious themes, other works served only as pleasant decor. A“Some experts think that the wealth gained from trade allowed for such leisure in sports and the arts. (一些专家认为从贸易中获得的财富使得人们能够在体育和艺术方面享受这样的休闲时光)”,解释了米诺斯人能够追求休闲娱乐的经济基础,与前文关于休闲娱乐的内容相呼应。故选A项。

Section B
Directions:Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
