When I was in Grade Seven, I moved to a new town with my family. At first, I felt 31___ because I knew nobody. Our neighbour, Mrs White, was an old lady who lived alone. She always sat by the window and watched the street quietly.
One cold winter afternoon, I saw her 32___ some heavy boxes into her house. She looked tired. I walked over and asked, “May I help you?” She smiled and said yes. After that, we became friends. She told me stories about the town, and I helped her buy food or fix small things at home.
Mrs White said I was the first person to talk to her in 33___ months. She gave me homemade cookies and taught me how to knit(编织). I learned that a small act of 34___ could make someone’s day brighter.
Years passed. When I entered Grade Eight, my maths became a big problem. I almost wanted to 35___. Mrs White heard about it. She didn’t teach maths, but she brought me an old notebook of her grandson’s and said, “He was once weak in maths too. Try his way.” Inside were clear notes and patient steps.
With her encouragement, I kept working and my grades went 36___. Later, Mrs White fell and had to stay in hospital. My family and I visited her every week. We read to her and brought flowers.
She once said to me, “You repaid my 37___ with your own.” I knew what she meant. Kindness is like a boomerang(回飞镖)—it always comes back.
Now I’m not shy any more. I believe one smile, one hand, can change a person’s 38___. And I’m thankful that a lonely old lady and a 39___ boy learned to grow together.

Active reading is a useful way to understand a text deeply. It means you don’t just move your eyes over the words, but you think about what the writer wants to say and how it connects to your 41___.
When you read actively, you can underline key sentences, write short notes in the margin(页边), or ask yourself questions like “Why does the writer say that?” This keeps your brain 42___ and stops you from getting sleepy.
A student named Liu Yang, aged 2___, shares his way. “I used to read 43___ and forgot everything the next day,” he says. “Now I read with a pencil. If I find a new word, I guess its meaning first, then check the dictionary. If a sentence surprises me, I copy it into my 44___.” His English improved a lot in one term.
Active reading also helps with feelings. When you read a story about a brave girl, you may ask, “Would I do the same?” That makes the story 45___ to you. It is not just someone else’s life; it becomes a talk between you and the book.
Teachers suggest reading the title and pictures before starting. That gives your brain a 46___ of what is coming. Then read the first and last paragraphs carefully—they often hold the main idea. While reading the middle, go 47___ and don’t rush.
If you meet a long difficult sentence, break it into small parts. Find the subject and the verb first. This 48___ the mystery(神秘).
“Reading is not a race,” says Liu Yang. “It is a walk. A slow, careful walk can show you more than a fast run.” Active reading is a 49___ skill not only for exams, but for life. The more you 50___ it, the more you grow.

A little stream(溪流)ran down from a high mountain. It passed through forests and rocks, then it reached a desert. “I went through so many difficulties,” the stream said to itself, “but the desert seems to eat me up. I can’t get across it.”
The wind heard this and said, “If you let yourself become vapour(蒸汽)in my arms, I can carry you over the desert. When you rise into the sky, you become clouds. Then you fall again as rain and join another river.”
“But will I still be me?” asked the stream.
“Yes, your water will still be water. You only change your form,” the wind answered.
The stream thought for a while and decided to try. It let the sun warm it and the wind hold it. Soon it flew high as vapour, turned into a cloud, and crossed the desert. Days later, it fell as rain on the other side and ran into a big river.
The river said, “Welcome. You never disappeared. You just changed your way.”
From then on, the stream knew: when life blocks one road, we can find another by changing our mind.
59. Why did the stream feel worried when it reached the desert?

Some students think “talent” means you are born good at something and never need to work. But studies show that most top learners are not the smartest at birth. They just use better methods and keep going.
Take learning English words as an example. A “talent” student may read a word once and remember it. A normal student may forget it three times. But if the normal student reviews the word at the right time—after 1 hour, then the next day, then a week later—he can remember it longer than the “talent” one who never reviews.
This is called spaced repetition(间隔重复). It is not magic; it is how our brain works. The brain forgets fast at first, then slower. Reviewing before the forgetting point builds strong memory.
Another method is “teaching others”. When you explain a grammar point to a classmate in your own words, you must understand it first. Many top students keep a “mistake notebook”. They write down why they got a question wrong, not just the right answer.
So talent is not a wall. It is a starting line. Hard work with smart methods can catch up and even pass “talent”.

A. By asking a question. B. By showing a wrong idea and then correcting it.

A. The English word. B. The normal student. C. The smart student. D. The book.

Sara was a student in Grade Eight. She loved drawing but was too shy to show her pictures to anyone. She kept them in a box under her bed.
One day, her art teacher, Miss Lin, asked everyone to put one work on the classroom wall. Sara’s hands shook. She wanted to hide, but Miss Lin smiled and said, “Every picture is a voice. Yours should be heard too.”
Sara chose a small drawing of a cat in the rain. She pinned it in the corner. To her surprise, a boy from another class stopped and said, “I like how the cat looks brave.” Others nodded.
After that, Sara didn’t close the box. She drew more and even joined the school art club. She learned that being shy was not a crime(罪); it was just a door. Someone else’s kind word could open it.
In the end-of-term show, Sara’s picture won the “Most Heart-warming Work”. She stood on the stage, not as a quiet girl, but as an artist.
She later wrote in her diary: “I thought my drawing was nothing. But one small courage plus one kind word changed my two years.”

①China’s high-speed railways are known all over the world. But few people know that some station names and train numbers are inspired by ancient poems and old stories.
②For example, the phrase “Qing Feng”(clear wind)on some tourist trains comes from a Tang poem describing a cool breeze through pine trees. Designers hoped passengers would feel calm when they saw it.
③Another train line in the south uses “Bai Lu”(white dew)as a theme. It is taken from a famous poem about autumn. The carriages are painted with soft colours of morning dew.
④Even some bridge names use old wisdom. A bridge over a river in Anhui is called “Yue Ying”(moon shadow), from a Song-ci line. At night, lights under the bridge make the water shine like the poem.
⑤From a small name on a ticket to a big bridge, traditional culture is walking with modern life. It tells us the past is not far; it is in our daily trip.
70. What is the text mainly about?
A. How fast China’s trains run.
B. How ancient poems and stories influence modern transport names.
C. Why tourists like trains.
D. How to write Tang poems.

Hobbies are not just for fun. They can teach us focus, patience and even knowledge. Generally speaking, hobbies fall into three types. The first is making things, like model planes or bread. The second is collecting things, like stamps or stones. The third is learning skills, like playing chess or coding.
A good hobby helps you relax after study. It also gives you a small goal every day. For example, watering a plant teaches responsibility; finishing a puzzle teaches patience.
However, a hobby should not hurt your health or study. Don’t play online games till midnight. Keep it balanced.

The Changes Made Me Braver
I used to be a shy boy. I never put up my hand in class and walked with my head down in the hallway. I thought nobody would listen to me.
In Grade Eight, our neighbour Mrs White fell ill. She had no family in town. My mum asked me to help send her medicine every afternoon. At first I was afraid to knock on her door. But she always smiled and said, “Thank you, young man.” We talked a little each time. She told me she was once afraid to speak too, but she joined a reading group and changed.
Later, my English teacher asked me to read a short passage in front of the class. I remembered Mrs White’s words. I took a breath and did it. My voice shook, but I finished. Classmates clapped.
From that day, I knew one small step can open a door. Now I join the school broadcast team and even tell stories to younger students. I’m thankful to Mrs White and my teacher. They made me see: being brave is not having no fear, but moving with fear.
The changes made me braver, and I like the new me.
